My old Paramedic partner is all growed up. Congrats on the new job, Brian.

Smilin' Mike Minium.
Good work O-town.

Why didn't I know more about Professor Friedman before his death? I guess I wasn't paying attention. We should honor him by passing a flat tax now.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Ron Nelson at November 19, 2006 6:41 PM

Michael and Jim D.

Congrats on a huge win. The better team on Saturday won the game. Hopefully we'll get another go on a neutral field, although I don't think I could handle seeing my defense shredded like that again!

I am prepared to pay my debts...I will do the extra workouts this friday and saturday and may even take photos for y'all. I will be proudly wearing my Michigan gear despite the outcome of the game. Thanks for the thoughts on Bo...tough weekend for us.

Comment #4 - Posted by: bret kleefuss at November 19, 2006 6:41 PM

Bret, I'll keep my end. We didn't cover so Nancy it is. I should be good to go on Sunday and I can't wait. It's killing me sitting around and not being able to do anything.

The game was a good one. Yor "D" wasn't shredded it was just out smarted. Lloyd made some great adjustments in the second half.

For all the loathing I do of that "state up north", my parents retired there and I'll be south of Jackson over Christmas. If your anywhere close, I'd look forward to the opportunity to workout with you.

Jim

"..., that any expansion of government beyond the classical liberal state would be highly likely to cause more trouble than it could solve."

if that ain't the truth.
Happy Rest Day all!!

Comment #6 - Posted by: Travis L @ Prosperity at November 19, 2006 8:26 PM

I may disagree with Friedman, but he remains likely the most influential theorist of the past 50 years. The past 25 years, and the next 25, will largely be a test of the neo-liberal model of economics and political economy, and its ability to deliver a high standard of living to all citizens of the world (a promise it makes).

Comment #7 - Posted by: Zach at November 19, 2006 10:08 PM

WOD as RXed = 24 hours

Comment #8 - Posted by: Adam at November 19, 2006 10:52 PM

Kipling vs. Strict Pull-Ups? Your going to get great results either way. Try both ways and then go with your instincts......Not every NBA player shoots the ball the same way, not every pro tennis player uses the same grip, not every pro boxer trains the same way, etc........The most important thing is to get your chin over that bar and follow your workout plan!

Comment #9 - Posted by: Bri at November 20, 2006 12:03 AM

Gunga Din does Kipling Pull-ups!

Comment #11 - Posted by: Janine at November 20, 2006 2:21 AM

Friedman was one of those rare individuals that made positive change happen for untold millions and yet received relatively little general recognition. His free-market bias was a little too over the top even for some libertarians but the contribution is undeniable.

random question: what does rx'd mean?

Comment #13 - Posted by: f at November 20, 2006 5:53 AM

Hi all,
MOST WEIGHT IN KILOS
Saturday's work {SN 60xx6, 70x1x4, 80x1; 82.5x1x10 (:50 interval for these last ten) and {squat 125x2x10 and DB PR (60#er's)x2x10 (1:30 interval for the supersets)}.
Bdw. 82.5
Today's {Rope jumpx50; MU (bar; regular gip)x1; and DB press (40#er's)x2}x30.
Duration 32:45...

Comment #14 - Posted by: Jonathan Jensen at November 20, 2006 6:06 AM

#13 - rx'd means as prescribed. If the wod states 135 lb cleans, many folks will use 65,95 or 115 instead to keep the workout pace high and get the metabolic benefit of the wod. But if someone is able to use all weights and numbers as prescribed, they say "as rx'd."

Good day to ask this question. I've looked in the FAQs section and didn't find anything.

I've seen several comments about doing paralettes but no idea what that means. Would someone mind shedding some light on that for me?

Comment #18 - Posted by: Hoovnutts at November 20, 2006 6:54 AM

#18 - You will have a lot more fun, and find a lot more info that you weren't looking for (but will benefit you greatly) if you look around on the crossfit archived pages, the cf affiliates pages, and look for the info you need. You will find pics of paralettes, plans for how to make your own, different paralette exercises, workouts and challenges.... There is SO much info out there on paralettes and everything else, you will really short-change yourself if you rely only on this section for direct answers to your questions.

Just my .02

If you looked at the FAQ, you didn't look very hard...section 5.3 provides links to how to make, and a site full of paralette exercises.

Nice article and tribute to Mr. Friedman.

And a well-deserved tribute at that.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Mike Minium at November 20, 2006 11:17 AM

Off topic here, but does anyone know who the manufacturer is of the power cage that is shown in several of the recent WOD photos?

Thanks,
Travis

out with girls today at play structure and there were some rings gave it a try and I accomplished the most gawd awful muscle up ever...but I did one. Started in September and YEEEEHAAA! So pain and sweat do equal results...now then 29 more to go for that pesky WOD

Comment #23 - Posted by: jbl at November 20, 2006 11:37 AM

Did Diane (catching up from missing this last triplet). Will try to get the 800m run in, as well. Posted on appropiate page.

Might mention that both pukey and his cousin dizzy are not very attractive in person.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Kristi at November 20, 2006 12:34 PM

The article is a well written tribute to one of the great minds of the last fifty years.

On another note, those interested in politics and/or economics might enjoy this site: http://www.sasi.group.shef.ac.uk/worldmapper/index.html

Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest.

Luca Z.,

I had the same thing happen the other day. I posted absolutely the funniest comment. I mean it was the funniest thing anyone has ever said on this site. Maybe the funniest thing ever, anywhere. OH, AND I WAS THE FIRST TO POST TOO! What a kick in the teeth! Anyway, you had to be there. You know, L.Z. I feel a real connection to you!

Comment #35 - Posted by: Lauren C at November 20, 2006 4:25 PM

Milton Friedman. He stood up to the bearded elites at college universities pushing Socialism and crushed them in debates.

He exposed their invented myths all the while they were shouting "fairness, fairness" and living previldged existences.

Comment #36 - Posted by: David Gladstein at November 20, 2006 4:52 PM

Milton Friedman deserves more comments. We are literally leading better lives because he stood up for the ideas of economic freedom and against the sloppy thinking of liberal welfare staters. As even Salon concedes, he created a body of thought that "has to be reckoned with."

Comment #37 - Posted by: blades at November 20, 2006 5:14 PM

I felt bad for taking the weekend off so I decided to do some Parkour. Trained for almost and hour and a half. I noticed my newfound usable strength from doing the WODs. I finally figured out how to do a 2 step wall run! I can get on top of 6 foot walls with relative ease and I can overcome 8 footers with a little wiggling and time.

Comment #38 - Posted by: Aaron Jacob at November 20, 2006 5:14 PM

Amen. I agree with everything he stood for. I didn't know much about him as a person, but I have to say it sounds like he was the sort of person I strive to be: uncompromising and relentless in the pursuit of learning and mental growth.

A word about the Univ. of Chicago: I got my Masters there, and I really have to agree it is a hard-core intellectual environment. Not posey pseudo-intellectuals, but people who will hand you your ass on a plate if you say something stupid. I really have to say that is where I learned the sheer amount of effort that is required to think clearly.

There was a list that came out while I was there of 300 major universities ranking them according to how much of a party school they were. U of C came in dead last, right after West Point, and wore it as a badge of honor. Partying on Saturday night was drinking a beer while reading something light like Steinbeck.

I'm an uebergeek, and proud of it, and proud to share an alma mater with a great man like Friedman (and of course many other Nobel Laureates). May he rest in peace.
