With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.

Post number of minutes completed to comments.

I have been doing Crossfit since March and I love it. As a former college basketball player it is nice to find a workout program more than just lifting weights and running on a treadmill. However, I am about to begin training for the MS150 bike ride, any advice on how to combine my bike work with crossfit.

Funny, I just did max pull-ups today (oops). Will probably hurt my time, but I got 25 good kipping pull-ups up from maybe 5 six months ago. Thanks CrossFit. Now if I could just push away better instead of dropping I would have 40...

Thanks Nichole. I have to get Mike M. on tape doing them: you can really see the strong hip action that both motivates the rope and gets you off the ground. It is similar to a kipping pull-up. Plus he can do over 50!

QUESTIONS:

1. I haven't done this workout before. Am I supposed to take 1 minute to complete the pullup or do one quickly and then wait 59 seconds to do the other 2?

2. What are J.T. whatevers? For today"s workout I just did ring pushups.

Joe #12 - that's right. You could if you like combine some of the first few minutes (eg do 6 [that is 1+2+3] pulls minute 1, 4 minute 2, 5 minute 3 etc). Or do a few push ups, squats or whatever in the 59 seconds. But it doesn't stay so seemingly easy for long for most of us!

As the workout description states, start your watch and within the first minute that elapses you must do one pullup; you must complete 2 pullups within the second minute; 3 within the third minute, and so on until you are unable to complete the number of pullups corresponding with the minute you are on.

The reason I push myself to gasping in training is so I don't have to in competition.

Youb simply havent been watching if you dont see elite level athletes bent over exhausted - but it will depend on what sport and how much recovery opportunity occurs.

This is for the SSGT of Marines comment on the front page....

I use the crossfit workouts for my Marines at school here in MO. An ALICE pack with a book or two and set of cammies with boots and MOPP gear equates to about a 25-30 pund pack .. which is great for kettle bell swings and I have found that many things we are issued can double as crossfit equipment. try them before deployment, hope it works out.

By the way, I was at a pre-season workout for the Sonics last year and watched at least half the team do the 'ol boot and rally. I think they qualify as elite.

What if a health insurance company that I'm about to join learns that I injured my shoulder 2 years ago while lifting because I mention it on this site? Will they use that against me or not insure me? What if my boss thinks I'm breathing too hard while working out? Google your name and see what you find out about yourself, that anyone else can as well.

I did 13 minutes plus 12 pull ups.
All pull ups jumping/ negatives.
Also mixed in some squats for the first 10 minutes with the numbers counting down from 10.

I had to laugh at the granola smoker title, that's a first! I've always just heard it called crunchy granola types.

Dan McD - I was definitely not indifferent; just amazed at the number of pullups that a man that big could do!! Outstanding work.

22 + 10 - ripped off several callouses, terminated the last set early. Kipping pullups done with a different grip (pullup, chin, mixed, parallel) and on different bars (regular bar, fatter bar, doorway gym) each round.

Worked with an injured arm. Subbed heavy lat pulls for pullups. (I know...I hate myself!) Did ten lat pulls to start and made it to 11 mins. Extra: Five sets of 5 cleans to front squat to standing by five (105 lbs) and then did intervals on the treadmill at high speed. I think I was punishing myself for my weakness lol.

I agree with you about injury and the risk of Rhabdo - but you are looking at the wrong athletes. Watch an 800m sprinter TRAIN. Watch wrestlers TRAIN (get a video of Dan Gable's Iowa Hawkeyes for some eye-opening training of elite athletes doubled over, dripping with sweat - they're animals).

I, on the other hand, felt like I should have had some gas left in the tank, but after the 12th round, I could not recover fast enough. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow, or maybe I'll just wait til next time this WOD comes around. Still an improvement. Next time I want 15 minutes though.

I was pretty disappointed because I only got 8 minutes, so I added some stuff:
the pullups (got as far as 8 minutes)
knee-ups (two sets of 8)
30 seconds of double-unders
25 situps
30 seconds of jump rope
25 pushups (10 wide, 10 normal, 5 diamond)
30 seconds DUs
10 dips
30 seconds jump rope
15 dumbell rows each arm
30 seconds DUs
8 curls per arm
60 seconds L-seat
3 40-lb bag of dog food snatches with each arm
15 mins of stretching

After all that crap, I'm sure tomorrow's workout is going to be interesting.

Dear Cynic - I'm a middle-aged, civilian, female office-worker, so I'm not sure I'd qualify for a macho cult-like gang. I've been doing crossfit for a couple of months now and I sing its praises every chance I get. I love that the workouts are as hard as they are, and I love the muscle definition I'm seeing as a result. I've never felt fitter. (I get some weird looks in the gym though.) I also enjoy the community of the comments page. I was particularly moved recently by condolences expressed to the family and friends of a fallen soldier. I'm a bit disappointed today by some of the homophobic and left-bashing comments. Let's try to keep it honourable guys. Next time, don't rise to the bait... although, I have to admit that 'granola-smoking' is a pretty funny image.

Not my best performance today, but the shoulder is feeling better. First 10 rounds underhand grip to protect the shoulder. Started kipping at round 11.
16 rounds 12 pullups.

Had a crossfit moment at the gym. A big guy comes up to me after round 7 and ask me how I do so many pullups. I told him I was only on round 7 and would get to at least 13 before I had to break them up. He said "I can do a lot of weight on all liffts I just can't do pullups." I proudly said "Practice, I do 45 everyday just for a warm up"

To address your "puking" point straight on, it's not that unusual of a thing to do from my humble experience. I don't know the "science" behind it, but back in the glory days of yester-year when I was in crew in college, we had someone puke quite often. Did we want to? No, but when the coach ran us, weight-circuited us, and ERGed(Concept IIs) us in short time frames, some one was bound to puke especially if they didn't eat properly or drank like a prototypical Cal Poly rower.
So you don't have to be a pro athlete to puke, you just have to push yourself or be pushed is what I figure. I haven't puked from working out in years(but oh so close), so maybe it's time to get with the program. I haven't met too many people who can push themselves as hard as their colleagues or coach can. Those folks are pretty self-disciplined.

I live in Novato Ca and heard that there is a Crossfit opening here soon. Can anybody confirm this for me and E-mail me. I work out at a gym that is poorly equiped for a crossfitter (no rubber plates,platform,rope climbing etc.) 210 lbs.48 yrs old 13 rounds plus a 1500 meter row and the rx'ed warm up. I think the homophobic comments are disgusting.

As far as being winded or tired after a WOD, nobody is forcing you to do the WODs, or to do them with any intensity. It's your own choice whether you want to step it up a notch or not. For me it depends on my mood, how much sleep I got, how stressed out I am, and what I feel like doing. It's all about finding a balance between pushing myself and taking care of myself. Kind of like a guitar string, not too tight and not too loose. It's all about choices, ey? Personally I like the really really intense WODs (without sacrificing form) followed by listening to Enya and doing yoga asanas and deep breathing, but whatever floats your boat.

Speaking for myself (not on behalf of CrossFit) I would like to address your claim that "there's plenty of other ways to get fit".

I am new to the CrossFit Community, but not new to fitness. In my life I have had the opportunity to train at two Olympic Training Centers (Lake Placid, NY and Colorado Springs, CO). I have been in the military and again had the opportunity to train with the best (NAVSPECWAR). Since then, I have also receive several certifications in personal training from NASM, ISSA, ACE, and NCSM. I have a BS in exercise science as well.

In all of my experience and education, nothing has even come close to what I have acheived through CrossFit. You see, while others might talk about THEORIES of exercise and fitness, CrossFit provides RESULTS!

While I admit, the THEORY behind sitting on a physio-ball with one leg in flexion and performing rotational trunk flexes while holding a medicine ball is sound - it in NO WAY provides the RESULTS that is required for ELITE FITNESS!

Again - speaking only for myself, my experiences, and my education - CrossFit is the ONLY path to Elite Fitness. It is not the vomiting that makes it so, but the mental attitude of the individuals who do the workouts. CrossFit has done for fitness what Bruce Lee did for MA - strip away what doesn't work and use what does.

I am not saying you are wrong - just poorly educated. :)

i love how cynic has time to type on here i mean i thought i saw him at my gym on the 45 degree back ext doing side bends and i think he was in my way when i was doing pullups he was doing pec flys on the cable machine and oh yeah i was going to do assisted handstands on the smith machine but he was doing a seated military press/ one arm db bicep curl superset. This is by far the best workout program i have ever been on and i have a vast experience with different types of programs as i am sure many of the other crossfitters do to. i am sure we didn't just all hatch out of some dinosaur egg and begin crossfitting as our first workout (i can't verify that about some people like opt and kelly moore and all the other crossfit elites). One thing i know is i wish i would have found crossfit a heck of a lot earlier.

I guess it all depends on how you define "fit" and how you define "elite". Run 4.5mi, no real warmup after that...on into the WOD:

Compare to last time 13+5, or 96 total is a gain of 20.

There are plenty of silent killers resulting from a sedentary lifestyle and lack of fitness that are far more dangerous than a maximum effort CrossFit workout. A lot of the videos on the various sites show people doing their first CrossFit workout, and of course they look like they're getting sick, but if you look at the videos of the elites, they may be in a pain, but it's self-induced, they know what they're doing, and they shake it off. i don't doubt that people who do crossfit are in excellent shape; however, i think the assumption that an average crossfitter would prevaile over an elite triathlete is pretty bold, unless the average crossfitter is also a triathelete.
i would sink to the bottom during the swim, get bored during the run and probably get my shoelace tangled in the pedals and flip head over handlebars during the bike ride. advantage-elite athlete.

8 rounds, didn't count how many I got in the ninth round. Last time was 8 rounds + 5.

Did six rounds unbroken. After missing on the ninth round, went to jumping pullups (starting at 10) and got to 24 rounds + 24 on the 25th round. Then did 50 situps, an 800m run and 50 pushups. Started out with the Tabata squat routine (see tomorrow's post) b/c I am a day late doing this one. Guess I was feeling guilty for missing some workouts this week (heavy work weeks sometimes sap my motivation).

With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.

Use as many sets each minute as needed.
