Keeping the bar in the frontal plane - CrossFit Certification Seminar, September 2006
Posted by lauren at September 26, 2006 8:29 PM
This one always leaves me dead
Not sure I like LINDA but I luv dem NEW ORLEANS SAINTS!
I'm looking for anyone in Monterey CA that crossfits, I'm having withdraw I'm military and new to the city
Ugh, I had to make up Sunday's workout today...
YES! Last time I only did 10/8/6/4/2 and only used 24/20/16#, this time I'm hoping to more than double the weight and do all the reps.
I felt blessed to watch The New Orleans Saints winning their homecoming game in the Superdome's official reopening tonight on national television.
This win, in this spot, at this time, is an almost unparalleled display of the beauty of sports.
Let The Good Times Roll.
Linda needs to take a bath cause I smelled her coming.
My gym buddy and I have a great take on Linda. Rather than doing it as RX'd, which we would have no hope of doing, we scale it right back and aim to get it done in 20 minutes.
If you set the bars up at about half the required weight, you really can storm through. Both of us were spurred on by not wanting to be caught by the other.
By the end of it, we were both exhausted and exhilarated. Linda went from being a Woman To Be Feared to one of my favourite girls.
Crossfit Rocks.
Yeah, what Matt said. Btw, when I said more than double the weight, I meant more than double my previous weight, not the rx'ed weight. That probably goes without saying, but just wanted to clarify anyway.
Treelizard your enthusiasm always inspires me, whether on WODs or rest day posts.
Thanks, Robert! I think I'd have a hard time not being really enthusiastic about Crossfit, because it is amazing. I want little Crossfit tracts to hand out to people at my gym. :-)

almost 15 minutes longer than last time ( for a good reason)
last time/this time
deadlift: 155#/225#
benchpress: 185#/185# still having bp issues
cleans: 95#/135#
and three people trying to work around each other is not a recipe for a fast time, but I'm not blaming anyone, I needed those little breaks. Hands still weak from my break, I really didn't expect my grip strength to drop like that.

I'm with Bridges #8, could smell her coming. Strong work OPT. I'm still trying to work up to my real bwt, but hope to be close today. I'm sure that yesterday's make-up WOD of muscle-ups will add to my "real feel" weight today.

Funny reactions at the gym this morning. I was doing pushups,jmp-pu, hspu, and burgener warmup.. this guy came up to me and said "quite the workout you're doing"- I said "oh, this is just my warm up". Then I got asked by 3 different person, if i was a track athlete, a rower, a basketb player, or what sport i do... funny. Told them i did this for fun.
Yikes! Great workout to kick my arse today. I am going to have to drop some weight as I broke a toe last night sparring, and will probably sub in hang cleans from the full motion due to the injury.

can someone explain the "keeping the bar in the frontal plane" picture.
thanks.
I'll shave my head before this one. That way I will lower my bodyweight, thus lowering the loads, and this workout will be much easier. I will also exfoliate (as a grown man, I'd never thought I'd say that).
Any little bit helps.
I have a quick question? When doing bench press should I bring the bar down to my chest or should I bring the bar down so that my arm and forearm form a 90 degree angle or just below. I can do either so its no big deal I would just rather do the workout right.

Jared,
I'm flying to Crossfit Denver just to get any advantage I can for this....Don't you weight less at 3000 ft??
Not really going be a "storm" through...more like a "light mist with chance of winds over 10mph"...other than that...I'll bring my Outlook calendar to time the workout...
Joe R,
full range bro, all the way down to chest would be my 2 pennies!
Joe R. (#42), down as far as it goes and all the way up.
DL - 70# BP - 75# CL - 55#

Getting stronger on BP. Was able to maintain 75# entire workout. My BIGGEST challenge is that I don't have a spotter at the gym or I probably could go heavier on the BP. BP was on other side of gym or time could have been a little better.
"g" #40- the frontal plane divides the body into front and back halves. Keeping the bar in the frontal plane when doing an overhead squat provides the most efficient distribution of weight through the body as the lift is executed. Basically the weight will stay directly above your center of gravity.
"joe r" #42- Ask yourself this question; If something fell on me(on my chest) and I had to get it off my body, where would my arms be and where would the object be? Hope that helps.

Mike OD,
Come over to my house. We'll build a rocketship out of an old refrigerator box, and fly to the moon for this one. Is there an affiliate up there yet?
If there is, I'll go there so maybe I can finish a pullup workout in under 4 hours...

Anyone else think we don't lift 'heavy,' often enough to get through this one...
#28. Why would you scale it back? Nothing at Selection or Q for that matter is scaled back. Embrace the suck. Learning to do so will help you in the long run.
#44 Outlook calendar! hahahaha, nice one Mikey OD, nice one.
Does everyone do all the reps for each excercise in a row???
or alternate and do 10dl, 10bp, 10cleans???

1st date with Linda. Can barely type this. Almost as rx'ed, but had to lop 5% off of the deadlift and bench press because I didn't have enough weights. Not to fear, I got plenty fugged up by this WOD.

The cleans felt like taking a break after the bench press. I friggin' NEVER bench press anymore. D'oh!
I looked in the mirror once I staggered back into the house, and almost didn't recognize the guy staring back at me. Crossfit has radically changed my body composition. If I lose more weight, this WOD should get easier, right?! :-)

After the second round I decided that I needed to swap some of the weight from the bench press (had it at 185#) over to the deadlift (had it at 240#), which certainly didn't improve my time (neither did struggling with too much weight on the bench press). After that adjustment I was able to complete all sets as rx'ed without interruption. Next time I will shoot for 35:00 as rx'ed.

Thanks, treelizard! But, now I need to buy 2 more OLY bars so I can play with the big boys and girls. I think I can do more on the deads, which will kill the time. I am eating this up with a spoon!!! Linda scaled and modified as follows: DL:190, BP:160, Clean:95, 10-9-8-6-4-2-1 in 30:55. BW:175, YOA:57. This WOD is the nastiest of the nasty. So I did something resembling the WOD, hooray for me...and to everyone else out there with the onions to try this one. Thanks, Coach!

Mike OD- Nice time bro.
Marc- No, but the CFWU is a good place to build up for the WODs. Helps you work on OHS form everyday and PU's as well. I use it almost every workout. Though sometmes I do mix in some rowing now and then along w/the Burgener Warm-up on lifting days. I recommend doing it in conjunction w/a scaled down version of the WOD. Remember, warm-up is to warm-up. You can also use it to work on things as well. I.E., shoulder in flexibility.
Read "Start Here" on the left hand side of the homepage for more of an idea. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have anymore Q's.

Couple of fun things today. Chatted with a friend who is a 2 star in the Naval Reserve. He asked me what I was doing to get in shape for a climb in a couple of years. Told him Crossfit; he said "Oh yeah, the special forces do that." Cool.
Also, will be in Denver this weekend. Called Denver CF and will ry to get a work-out with Randy on Friday. My first affiliate visit!

Scaled down way too much...for some reason wasn't sure of my strength. Should have upped the weight (and will next time). Not sure why I went down so low on the bench press. Squat cleans were to the floor each time.

Am thrilled with the workouts, the speed and movements make working out not so much a chore.....however, the immense pain, gasping shortness of breath and general inability to raise my arms or legs is a bit of a hassle. #164 Patrick,
Rest days are about as important as breathing. Go without breathing and see how you do. They are really important. Without rest there is no recovery without recovery...injury. It's not a matter of if you get injured but when. Your rest day lets your body rebuild itself and try to keep up with what you are forcing it to do. Remember that rest days do not mean that you have to sit around and do nothing, there's active recovery; do skill work, light runs, stretching. I went for 3 1/2 months on the 3 on 1 off and finally took a 2 week break with the 1st week being very active recovery and the second week being limited to stretching. I'm back now and aside from the initial soreness of getting back into it, I can see a marked improvement. Good Luck.

mae-dl and bp only, did dl at 145 and bp at 95.
Thanks for the comment Ben L!
I almost bite off more than I could chew....deadlift were tough at the end.
Just finished the longest workout ever. Ashamed to post my time, over an hour. Did everything as posted. Can't believe A)How hard that was. B)That I finished it at all!!!

Not happy with my DL form, and the BP was too light, wish I would've done 70/50/40.

workout was TOUGH! I thought about either 1) losing weight to lift less or 2) getting stronger. I've been cf'g for about 3 months now and have been doing both. Wife joined me today. Finished her "Linda" in about 10min (weight mod'd). She was sweating for 15min after and loved it. Good stuff. My two boys are getting into this too. Fun family activity.

When I did my build up training for selection course I continued with my general training program on top of the build up program. I believe it gave me an edge over some of the others, as my edurance was at a higher level.

It was a good workout. I sweated the whole way through, my heart raced and I know I'm going to be sore tomorrow. I just couldn't handle more weights. I decided to lower rounds and weight in order to concentrate on speed. I'm not at CF level yet. :)

Lost track of time, 35-40 minutes. Great workout, blood on DL bar from shin, sweat everywhere, and tears (at least grunts and groans). Followed with round of golf on beautiful new england day, walking, and shot 92 (One off PR!)
Only 1 bar at my club so subbed as follows;
DL's BW (175)
50 # Dumbell bench press (pretty good sub)
40# dumbell cleans (not a good sub in terms of form, hard to focus on form without bar to get under, but pretty good sub in terms of effort)
Due to a lack of equipment available for this WOD, I decided to do "Helen" for the first time.
I used a 45lb dumbbell instead of a 1pood kettlebell (55lb felt too heavy)
12:04. Not a very good time considering my age and bw (29, 167), however I'm still "just starting out."
Believe it or not it was the runs that slowed me down. The pullups were all unbroken, strict form, no kipping.

When you crunch the numbers, in this WOD I lifted 73% the total poundage of a full Linda (reps*weight). My pounds/min lifted for this WOD was 1086.7 and for my last full Linda it was 941 on 4/12/06.
June 7: Deadlift 115, bench 80, clean 60.
Sept. 27: cfwu 2 rounds, then 10-9-8-7-6-5 Deadlift 155, bench 95, clean 75. Took 34 minutes to get to that point, and I was pretty wiped by then.

After nearly having calluses ripped of in DL last time, I bought some gloves. Today, as I lay on the floor after my last rep, contemplating my recovery time, I noticed that just above the second joint on my right middle finger (which is, of course, just above where the glove fingers end), I'd built up a blister...and ripped it off. Ah, adrenaline. Of course, it's hurt like a som'*()%^ since, but at least it didn't slow me.
I was pleasantly (if that's possible) surprised I got the 10 reps at 1 1/2 BW, but only got one out in the next 9. Then it was clear that if I was going to have any semblance of a workout, I'd have to drop weight.

a funny story....I didnt have a look at the WOD for this day, and so when I was at the gym I decided to do Linda -- (BP wasnt up to snuff because of an elbow injury, had to scale back to 155lbs (bw 165) and didnt finish 7-5 rounds completely on bp) -- anyway, otherwise as Rx'd, finished in 15:21.
