Those ARE some sah-weet shorts!

I may try a different exercise tomorrow, I call them 'jumping muscle-ups.'

120 pull-ups, 120 dips : 22:34
Last time I did this I had been doing CrossFit for about 3 weeks, and I did 120 pull-ups then 120 dips.
This time: 4 months, just got of break and did 3/3 for 30. definitly cranked up the intensity of the exercises and my form stayed better longer.

Those shorts should be illegal in public.

That beautiful yellow belt just makes the shorties pop. Maybe a future CrossFit official wear?

Comment #9 - Posted by: mrjling at September 23, 2006 10:41 PM

I have the same sweatshirt on!!

Whats with the Special Ops community and their love of short shorts??

Comment #10 - Posted by: Steven N at September 23, 2006 10:55 PM

If somebody was gonna rescue/extract/evacuate ME from a combat environment (and provide emergency medical care), I wouldn't care what kind of shorts they were wearing.

Comment #11 - Posted by: treelizard at September 23, 2006 11:14 PM

i've seen cct's. they would whoop those guys' behinds. they'd whoop all our behinds. the guys in the picture look more like financial accounting guys.
as for the shorts, i think the air force just wants to embarass the airmen, just like the marine corps wants to embarass their marines. ever see their shorts? oh boy.

Comment #12 - Posted by: justin at September 24, 2006 12:36 AM

Only got 25 sets of 4/4. It was tough going. This is the first time I've tried this without an assist machine.

Comment #13 - Posted by: anthony at September 24, 2006 1:34 AM

I work with the Air Force and whether those guys are PJ's or not I don't know but those shorts are not the standard Air Force issue workout shorts.

Comment #14 - Posted by: anthony at September 24, 2006 1:38 AM

those are short shorts? LMFAO, they're not the baggy rapper pants that people wear now to be trendy but those type of shorts have been worn for about 40 years by joggers throughout the world and nobody said a word. I guess it's all the youngsters posting on the board who don't know what it is like to live in a world without rap culture and MTV.

Comment #15 - Posted by: slammy jackson at September 24, 2006 1:54 AM

Those short look just like the standard issue shorts the Australain Army wear for PT. I See them every day at work. Some guys really shouldn't wear them...

Took my rings down to the beach Warmed-up with 15 min roller bladeing then
30 jumping MU,
Jump to/through transition pushing up to full extension and then lower back down under control.(kind of like a negative pullup) Did in sets of 5 = 12:08.
Finished off with another 30 pull ups and 30 ring pushups.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Fi at September 24, 2006 2:48 AM

Those are awesome shorts, they're made out of nylon and are more comfortable than briefs, boxers or boxer briefs. Even when guys get out of the schoolhouse they continue to wear them b/c they're that comfortable.

Comment #17 - Posted by: OhMylanta! at September 24, 2006 3:34 AM

6:09 on rings

much slower than last time

Comment #18 - Posted by: JeffT at September 24, 2006 3:46 AM

Wow, i'm so bad with pullups. no rings so did 15 sets of 4/4 for 60 pullups and 60 dips. 18:39. at least i should be able to beat this next time, lol. i look forward to the time i can do 1 muscleup.

Comment #19 - Posted by: bsbcoach at September 24, 2006 3:48 AM

Comment #20 - Posted by: OPT at September 24, 2006 4:12 AM

They are called "Ranger panties." OhMylanta! is right, they are very comfortable and I wear them every day when I workout. If you haven't tried them yet, I suggest you go and get yourself a pair for 8 bucks :)

Comment #21 - Posted by: Anthony W. at September 24, 2006 4:14 AM

You gotta love those guys for doing what they do! I love those shorts and have phased underwear out completely. For those of you that criticize...Don't dog it 'til you try it!!!!

Yep, today I need a watch with a millenium hand...

Comment #29 - Posted by: turtlest at September 24, 2006 6:16 AM

To Justin (post #12). I along with most Pararescueman, have actually worked with CCTs (not just seen them). They would not whoop our behinds...were a team in the war on terror...there are big and small, wide and skinny, tall and short in all SOF. The AF does not want to embarass it's Airmen...apparently you do. Remember...many of these guys will be risking their lives overseas in a few months...so instead of calling them small and making fun of their shorts...I'd ask everyone to simply keep them (and all of us) in your prayers.

Comment #30 - Posted by: TE at September 24, 2006 6:27 AM

For whoever is interested, those shorts are issued to AFSOC special-ops types. The AF issue shorts tend to chew up your grundle.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Lord of Shorts at September 24, 2006 6:37 AM

Who cares about these shorts! Great guy's, cool workout place.
My 3rth and last 50% day.
30x Jumping muscle ups: 5:01 min
Extra: 3x 2 reps of weighted ring pull-ups using 5 kg, 10 kg and 15 kg
Have fun, Johan

As Rx'ed: 13:04

Comment #33 - Posted by: Jason P at September 24, 2006 6:59 AM

I've never seen such a lengthy "wardrobe" discussion by a bunch of guys - very entertaining. There are some nice gams in that shot. Good luck and god's speed to them, wherever they go.

I don't like this WOD much (I enjoyed yesterday's 11:10) - I'll be doing the PUs and Dips... slowly and whining the whole time.... hmm, perhaps that means I need the upper body workout more.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Roxy at September 24, 2006 7:10 AM

In my unit, we call those "catch me, &^#%@$ me shorts," . . . and they are extremely comfortable.

Someone turned me on to this site a few weeks ago, and I've been working these routines in with my other workouts. I'm getting clse to being able to do the full WOD, but this one will be a ballbuster. This stuff kicks (my) butt!!!

Comment #35 - Posted by: Brendan at September 24, 2006 7:13 AM

23:34 for 120 pullups and 120 dips. Ugh! My hands hurt.

Comment #46 - Posted by: Jason Lopez-Ota at September 24, 2006 8:11 AM

Did my first MU today. Its the last day of my "easy week" and we went to a playground with our baby(4months) and there it was - the perfect muscle-up bar. I had to try. First it felt absolutely impossible, no way, but then I remembered someone saying its "one move" and that did it for me. Got 6-7 more after that. I was the happiest kid there.
Thanks Coach!

Kelly - 30 Ring MUs: 5:19

Catherine Imes (reigning kettlebell Master of Sport champion) will be competing in the Russian GS snatch competition in November - watched her do a non-stop 7 minute snatch set with an official comp bell: 65L/66R. The official bell is different than the dragondoor bells and the groove is different; each bell is the size of a dragondoor 88#.

Comment #50 - Posted by: kelly moore at September 24, 2006 8:33 AM

Yeah, they gave me the same type of shorts in the Marines and the Navy. Problem is my thighs are so large they rub together. So I always wore green spandex (well, something along those lines) with them. Actually made for a very good and modest combination.

Anyone that's seen the Daily Show clip with Rob Cordry in the gym doing a bench press will understand the modesty part.

As to the WOD, gonna do it later. Figure it'll it 15x(4 pu, 4 dips).

Comment #51 - Posted by: Nuke-Marine at September 24, 2006 8:41 AM

Kelly- you are an animal!
And an inspiration.

Comment #52 - Posted by: turtlest at September 24, 2006 8:42 AM

Found the perfect quote for my fridge to help me with how huge something like today's WOD seemed:

"Many things which cannot be overcome when they stand together, yield themselves up when taken little by little."

And that's just how I got through it...

Oh, and- Congrats, #47, on your first muscle up!

Comment #53 - Posted by: turtlest at September 24, 2006 8:58 AM

Speaking of shorts, I love these for crossfit. Good fight between huges and Penn last night.

BJ Penn gassed out in the third round last night. I'm a loyal Crossfitter, but I do wonder what this says for the program...

Comment #56 - Posted by: matt at September 24, 2006 9:11 AM

#47 NICE job...Congrats!

Comment #57 - Posted by: dave k at September 24, 2006 9:16 AM

#56,

Interesting question. I am also a loyal Cfer. I do not think it says anything for or against. It takes a great amount of fitness and guts to step into the ring to begin with. I am a fan of Hughes and he as a long track record of wins. It would be great to be able to compare and contrast each of the fighters training for the last six months. I would like to here other thoughts.

for all you making comments about PJs and theire shorts, I am at dive school with the PJ students now and they all wear those shorts, yes and the navy has they're own canvas short shorts and they kick ass, before you make fun of them,..try a pair on

Comment #63 - Posted by: McQuillan at September 24, 2006 9:47 AM

Had to use gloves today as palms are still ripped up from last 30 mu's
a couple of 3's a few 2's and a bunch of 1's. Never the less I got them all and I beat my last time of 25.

25 in 17:01
30 in 22:01

I don't know if BJ trains crossfit with the intensity and heart of Annie, Eva or Nicole, but you can only take out of it what you put into it.

Comment #66 - Posted by: Jim D at September 24, 2006 9:52 AM

Curious....was looking at the CFSC site and saw mention of 2 exercises I am unfamiliar with. FedEx and Caldwell run.....can anyone shed any light on these for me?

Team Lakeland

Neil: The Brand X pack workout of 15 MU's.
Did them on the bar...very ugly, really leaning over at the end. All singles 7:57. I tried to do a few more but my elbows were killing me. Finished up by doing some dips on the bar.

Jen. Did 40 beginner pullups and 40 assisted dips.

Comment #69 - Posted by: Neil at September 24, 2006 10:20 AM

#47 Mrjling
Congratulations on the mu's!!!

Comment #70 - Posted by: J-ROC at September 24, 2006 10:27 AM

21:30

120 pullups/120 dips split into 4's to more closely mimic a muscle up.

Practiced OHS and FS (4x5 with 18lb body bar)

Finished with 100 double unders for time (4:21)

Comment #73 - Posted by: emily h. at September 24, 2006 11:05 AM

Tried the MU at the playground and was humbled.

Had to relent and do the 120/120 in 15:06.

Theresa did 120 jumping pull ups and 120 dips in 17:42.

Congrats to #47!

Comment #74 - Posted by: Theresa & Mark at September 24, 2006 11:21 AM

I love the shorts ... no kidding! I like to see men's legs!!! :)

Comment #75 - Posted by: Amy at September 24, 2006 11:30 AM

There is no way on this planet that I could do a muscle up. Or a genuine pull up.

So, I did 120 pullups on the assist machine (20 at 50 lbs of weight, 100 at 35 lbs of weight) and 120 dips (same weights).

Never, ever again will I say about an upcoming day's crossfit, "as long as it isn't legs . . . "

Comment #76 - Posted by: Emily at September 24, 2006 11:37 AM

I finished to completion my first WOD, but I had to use an assist machine...however, I only displaced 50 or 60 lbs by the time I got to the end.

Comment #77 - Posted by: steve at September 24, 2006 11:38 AM

Started off on rings, but got sidetracked with technical difficulties. I've had to switch to a new branch in my back yard, and its angle had one ring slipping out for each rep. Made it to 10 and go bogged down trying to fix it. Quickly ran up to the wobbly pull-up bar at the top of the hill and cranked out the other 20.

30 muscle-ups and three lost calluses later- 11:20

Comment #78 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at September 24, 2006 11:40 AM

As a former USAF Combat Controller (308 CCS, Little Rock AFB, AR) I can say that these guys are probablly not PJs. Maybe future trainees, but they don't appear to have been through the pipeline yet. (The pipeline is the 10 week indoc course that makes crossfit look like the Barney show!)

Comment #81 - Posted by: Daniel at September 24, 2006 11:58 AM

I did what I call jumping muscle-ups but I started from the floor and in 2 minutes I did 2 reps so I added a riser and got it done in 8:51. I now hate these more than hand stand push ups. Oh, and I did it on a chin up bar, not rings.

Comment #82 - Posted by: gaucoin at September 24, 2006 12:09 PM

120 pullups

30 ring dips

Last 10 were jumping, with ring height slightly lower than fully extended arms. Otherwise, I'd still be there.

First 20 (the real ones) were done in 8:06

skipped the wod for an army apft, will save this one for a later wod

Comment #85 - Posted by: mfbunch at September 24, 2006 12:26 PM

What if I can't do muscle ups, or pull ups? I certainly can't do 120 dips. I realize that I'm not as hardcore as most of the people here, but this is just crazy!

Comment #86 - Posted by: Chris Shear at September 24, 2006 12:35 PM

as rx'd 13:25

in hindsight I could have pushed these a lot harder... I had no idea I would nail 'em all. slow, but stoked.

Comment #87 - Posted by: Ben L at September 24, 2006 12:50 PM

comment #86- Jump to slow-lowering pull-ups, assisted pull-ups on a gravitron or with bands, and the same idea with dips are all suitable scaling options.

Comment #90 - Posted by: lmd_stacey at September 24, 2006 1:20 PM

200 pull ups, 200 dips, overhead squats 10x10
time, probably 30 minutes. really don't know.

Comment #91 - Posted by: x at September 24, 2006 1:43 PM

Subbed CST. No, not really. CFWU X 3(-pu's and dips), assisted muscle-ups (60# assist), 6:42. A LOT easier than last time.

Comment #92 - Posted by: treelizard at September 24, 2006 1:53 PM

Oh yeah, followed up with negatives. I felt like this was too easy, but I couldn't even do one MU with only 50# assist, and I wanted to work on the motion of it. Maybe next time I'll do 120 body rows and chair dips instead.

Comment #93 - Posted by: treelizard at September 24, 2006 1:57 PM

120 dips / 120 pullups, broken into 30x[4/4], kipping pullups

14:52 mins - 10 min improvement ... pretty happy with that, can't use my arms any more of course, but happy:-)

Garry O'Neill - 15:06, great improvement as well. Completed this time without subbing the pullups at all and about 5 mins quicker!

Comment #95 - Posted by: Kyle Felmley at September 24, 2006 2:07 PM

120's done in 13:29 as 30x4/4. Last time I was 11 and change but I did the first 40 reps in sets of 10, plus today I couldn't use my favorite pullup bar. Listen to me, I'm making it sound like a car or a girlfriend, "oh my little pullup bar, I wonder where you are?..." BW:175, YA:57. Thanks, Coach!

Comment #96 - Posted by: john wopat at September 24, 2006 2:09 PM

This was my second time with rings; much better than the first. This time I did groups of 3&4. I was about half way there @ 2 minutes!

Added hockey tape to the rings since last time...helped grip tremendously but my hands still hurt.

Been spending a bit less time CFing lately and a bit more time O-lifting. Just for the heck of it.

This one was a major CF achievement for me. Did 30 ring-less muscle-ups. Did 25 on a straight bar in 22 minutes until my right hand ripped open, then finished the last 5 on curved bars (above the squat rack). Total time 25:49. Needed that after a tough day at the office.

120 pullups (OK, chins)(4x30)

Felt much stronger this time around. Took no breaks other than involved in switching between bar and ground.

Still can't do as rx'd, but getting better. 30 minutes, cooled down b/w sets of 20 with 3 minutes bike.

Comment #217 - Posted by: J. Addison at September 26, 2006 1:07 PM

Last time: could only pump out 6 MUs before strength and technique gave out on me.

This time: got to 10. I'll keep adding a few reps every time this comes up and eventually I'll do it as RXed. As I was winding down today, my technique was still adequate, but strength started failing and movements became herky jerky.

42 yrs old, 6' 200lbs.

11:33 as rx'd. My personal best in this is 7:31. I set the rings up higher so I had to jump to reach them. This cost me some energy and time. I did 7, followed by sets of 2's and 3's until I made it to 30.
