Well, at least the pullups have become the second exercise in Maggie, unlike in Mary where they're the "easy" exercise (the one you have to do most reps of). If Maggie was Mary times 4, it would be rounds of 60 pullups rather than 40. All academic of course - reducing it to "only" 200 pullups doesn't exactly make it a snap.
Does anyone take supplements? And if so what?

Joint complex containing glucosamine, chondroitin & a few other things. Seems to help my old bjj joint injuries. And a multi-vitamin although I often wonder if it's worth it.

53 minutes (7, 8, 11, 12, 15) 50# grav assist, even though I can now do a painfully slow pull-up (just one) with 30# assist and so should probably move to 40#... Also my push-ups weren't as low as they could've been. Next time I will do a scaled-down version for better form.

I'm just starting out with CF. I KNOW that I won't be able to do Candy as Rx'ed. Should I start with jumping PUs, or do as many reg as possible? And should I start with pushups from the knees ... I'm just guessing that my max for reg pushups is about 25, and I can't imagine doing that 5 times. Thighs are going to hurt, but I should be able to do the squats. Thanks for any advice.

That sucked - had a personal goal of sub 30 minutes but realized, sometime in the middle of the third round, that this was going to be all about survival. In any case, although my time is nothing to toot about, I am quite proud of myself for powering past Pukie and digging down deep to finish.
And, I left plenty of room for improvement on the next go around.

They start dead hang, but soon degenerate into kipping then jumping then twitching and finally cramping and crying
There's a trade off I think between cadiovascular impact - going 'ugly'and going at it as hard as you can - and strength training - perfect form. I could do it with perfect form, but it would take longer. A week maybe. I feel absolutely shattered at the end of these bodyweight workouts and my 'pullup muscles' are pretty much worked to failure. I find that form on the squats and pushups doesn't degenerate as quickly. I have no idea if this is the right way to do it or not. I think the important thing is to try and improve each time - I have found that the quality of movement is getting better each time these come around. I can crack out 18 or so chin ups now in great form, which seems to make all the steroid boys a little unsettled.

sweet sweet Candy had the whole show and that's a natural fact. Time estimated as 23:38. I forgot to start stopwatch until after first set of pullups. So, add 30 seconds. Pullups are feeling much stronger. Following with run of 4.18 miles at. Heat index is around 90 outside so I ran at leisurely pace.
Supplements I take are a multi-vitamin and triflex (glucosamine, chondrotin, and MSM) for joint health.
Amy #35 try to do your best with the exercises the hard way, but listen to your body. If you need to do assisted pullups and knee pushups so be it. No one should look down on you if you are doing your best and no exercise is worth injurying yourself. We are all at different fitness levels but we don't judge we support and encourage. You will do great. Jim

Watching Ahmik doing the 100 jumping pull-ups was great inspiration and as I struggled with 5 jumping pullups doing Candy I had even greater appreciation for that awesome feat. Great job Ahmik--I was glad to see it in person.
I go through 3 rounds in 22:00... then threw up a couple of times. I think I'll call it a day.

BUT did all PUs with 40lb. Gravitron assist. Sharp pain in my outside left lat for the past week so there was no way I was going to get 100 PUs unassisted. The masochist in me looks forward to the next time when I can try it straight up.
The big news is the mental toughness it took to complete this. Going in I told myself that I would only do 3 rounds. Once in, I couldn't let myself down by not finishing the WOD. Thanks Crossfit.
What would be the sub for pullups without having to use a machine. I have nothing at my house except for a jump rope and some kettlebells.
I missed my 4:30 AM workout this morning as I was just too exhausted from running yesterday lol. This will be my first official WOD! I am going to try to do Candy! I know I can hit the squats and the pushups with no troubles. The pullups are gonna have to be jumping though. I just haven't built the strength to get my big butt off the ground and to the bar otherwise. You guys are absolutely amazing doing 20+ pullups unassisted and unbroken. I bow to you guys! Hopefully I will put up a good time though! Wish me luck! Should I post my BW and age along with my time?

Charles (105), There really isn't a sub for pullups, but there are 3 options. Assuming you do the crossfit warmup, you will be doing pullups everyday, so you might want to invest in some sort of bar.
1. Go to a local park and find something to do pullups on (tree branch, a shorter swing set, etc.)
2. Find a railing or banister, lie underneath it and pull yourself toward it.
3. Find the heaviest thing in your house that you can lift. Bend over, grab it, and pull it toward your chest. Lower and repeat.
Note that 2 and 3 are not really subs, just something to work your lats until you can get a pullup bar. The kind that mount over a doorframe can be had for around $50 or less.

Question, is it better to do regular pullups and break up the sets or do weighted pullups to get the 20 reps unbroken? I want to stick with unassisted even though I can't get to 20 reps (for sure not for 5 rounds), is that okay, as I feel it'll make them easier in the long run. Thanks yall

Strange how my times got better after the 2nd round. I went balls to the wall on the first round and the following rounds I decided to just survive them. I had to take pretty long rests in between rounds, and I had to eat saltine crackers and tums on the last 2. No need for any cardio today!

Ouch--I did modified Maggie. I had to do jumping pullups and the squats were two-legged but it was around 54-56 minutes (forgot to stop the watch until it hit 58).

All pullups were dead hang, but I varied the grip.
Supplements: I like to keep all kinds of things around that I can cook with (goji berries, herbal vinegars, reishi mushroom, seaweed, nettles, Ayurvedic tonic jams, ginger, cayenne), make into tea (too many to list) or throw in a smoothie (cod liver oil, protein powder, bee pollen, spirulina). I make all kinds of zoom balls and energy balls, keep lots of nervines around (tea, tincture, you name it) as well as B complex supplements (liquid or sublingual) for stress, and I always have trace minerals around, as well as electrolyte drinks, and emergen-C.
On a regular day I only use maybe one to three of the above.
When I was really deficient (anemic, etc.) I took the best multivitamin I could find (Oregon Health Multi-GuarD with CoQ10) and Floradix Liquid Iron and Herbs until I got back on track.
After this WOD, work will not be fun tonight.

# 138 - it's better to do regular pullups. after you can no longer manager 1 pullups, then begin jumping pullups.
you might consider breaking the sets into mini sets. eg. 4 sets of 5 pullups. of course, try to limit the time of your breaks.
if your first round takes longer than ~7 minutes, then you might consider scaling down the reps in the remaining rounds.

I seriously suck at anything that involves high-rep push-ups...Seriously, I reach failure like a baby after 15 reps, it's ridiculous! Yesterday I did a workout from the archives that called for 21-15-9 Hang-Squat-Clean, 50lb dumbells, and Handstand Pushups, that didn't help matters at all.
Picked Candy and got totally owned at 27:00 and change. I'm going to sulk in the corner now.

Comparing it to my last Cindy WOD (23 rounds) I am able to observe that I am outputting the same amount of power in a shorter amount of time.

Practically the same amount of effort in less time. I think that I can sprint to completion something like Candy where I have a fixed ending as opposed to something like a 20:00 Max Rep effort that is more open ended. Probably for the same reasons I/Most Ppl can run faster and longer on treadmills (fixed track) vs the open road (open ended amount/speed/pwer/etc).
You know how when you cut into an apple it starts to turn brown?This is called oxidation.
Without making this a science class,the same thing is happening on a cellular level when you train.The harder and more frequently you train the more oxidation is taking place,so all crossfitters/athletes should be taking a high antioxidant multi-vitamin on top of proper nutrition.Ibuprofen,Tylenol,Aspirin all impede protien synthesis,if you just tough it out you will benefit more from your workout physically and mentally.

Candy, 37 minutes, tough one today. I did the pull-ups in sets, 4 of 5 reps for each of the 5 rounds (does that make sense?!?!?). Complete set of pushups and complete of squats.
Could have pushed myself for the pullups, I didn't feel that bad afterward. Maybe next time shoot for 10 reps at a time?

I do drink green tea,however it is a diuretic which means it can dehydrate you so I only drink it once in a while.Of course I'm sure we are all drinking enough water and electrolytes....right.

Candy- 23:57 as rx'ed, easily one of my worst performances in the past 4-6 months. I felt fine and I had the energy but I just couldn't pump out the push ups (of all things) and the squats didn't go so great as well. I'm shooting for sub 18 min next time.
now that my head has cleared (of Candy), I realize that my power output was less than my last Cindy.
Cindy: 18 rounds in 20 minutes: 540 reps (540/20=27)
Candy: 20 rounds in 31 minutes: 600 reps (600/31=19)
my Candy time should have been around 22 minutes.
Now, had I calculated a targeted time to achieve the same power output, I wonder if that would have effected my actual time?
I will have to try this one again. But not tomorrow!

J.Messano I would not compare my cindy times to candy times. From my experience I was breathin way heavier doing candy than doin cindy. Besides candy has way more reps at 1 time. To me there is no comparison. Sure they have the same movements but rds 3-4-5 felt like the late rds in cindy and for a longer period of time. I did candy in 29 something next time I expect 28 or 27..

That was the worst I felt during a workout since I started doing Crossfit, hence skipping two rounds. I don't know what's wrong with me, but I'll have to make up the last two rounds before tomorrow's WOD.
Only four rounds of Candy, but did it with ten pounds in my vest, @ 31:02. My right shoulder was bothering me a bit, so I decided to stop. I figured that this is the first out of three days and I didn't want to be going into the next two days having to back down because of it.
John Messano #175, but didn't your time increase the more rounds you did? For me, I did:
53 pullups, 100 push-ups, 150 squats for Cindy and (20 min) 303/20 (15.15)
100 pullups, 200 Push-ups, 300 squats for Candy (53 min) 600/53 (11.32)
But since I timed my rounds I know that I got the first 2.5 candies done in approx 20 minutes, and the last half of the WOD was approx 33 (give or take thirty seconds). I'd venture a guess that your last sixty reps lowered down the average.

The fatigue of the double Cindy rounds here was noticeable, particularly with the push ups where i had to break at 20 then on the 10's and so forth. Pullups kipped and after the first round, I took a 10sec break at 10, squats broken at 30. I think if Candy was 10 rounds of Cindy rounds I would have gone sub 10, but who can say for sure. but in terms of power output (Coach? anyone?), Candy was far more challenging for most of us.
assuming the same total number of reps completed (600 (5 rounds of Candy or 20 rounds of Cindy), Candy took longer, it felt harder, and the power output was significantly less.
was it muscle endurance that crushed me?
and certainly, I've had more dates with Cindy. i know that girl, as dennyy mentioned. i know i'll be suffering when I pass round 14 or 15. so I'm ready to accept the discomfort.

39:58 as rx'd. should've been drinking during workout--got bad calf cramps afterwards. 10 min elip w/u 14/14. hr avg 150, hr max 172. age 49, bwt 182. compared to last cindy 16 rds + 6 pull ups or 86 pull ups, 160 push ups, 240 squats in 20 mins. candy took 50% longer for 19% pick up in reps.
Candy at 50% of rx'd (sets of 10, 20, and 30. actually I did the 20/40/60 the first round, then realized I wouldn't finish in time to get home, shower, and pick up the girl in time for dinner). Everything broken except for squats.
Seriously, this is demoralizing. This was my 5th WOD, and and I'm ashamed I ever called myself in shape or an athlete, and this is coming from a former collegiate defensive back. I can't wait to see how I've progressed weeks from now.

PU- 2 rounds of 20+10. Positron w/ 70 lb offset for first two rounds, switched to 100 off for third round, but there wasn't much strength left. All with chin over bar.
Pushups-2 rounds of 40 + 20. Broken sets, good form.
Squats- 2 rounds of 60+ 30. Broken sets, butt to heels.

I typically can get 16 rounds of Cindy in 20 minutes. Extrapolating, Candy should have been done in 25 minutes. So why the difference? My theory: 1) The power output (work over time) can not be sustained (at least by me) at "Cindy" levels, for one given exercise, for a "Candy" number of reps -- even round one was 25% slower than a typical Cindy workout pace; 2) based on my degraded performance for each round, the fatigue factor grows each round. What is the physiology driving this? Somebody else needs to answer this.
