does anyone feel that crossfit works for those who are just trying to look fit? I dont do any other competitive sports and my job doesnt rely on my physical abilities... does anyone think crossfit is superior to split bodypart routines for building muscle?

I think that crossfit is the all around best workout I have come across. Not only does it get you in better shape all around, but yes, it does make you look better, and more importantly feel better.

Look at the faq's regarding size gained. Unless you are doing steroids, it will get you more jacked.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Kalen at June 18, 2006 8:21 PM

What does 'look fit' mean? Do you work in an environment in which you are shirtless often?

Comment #6 - Posted by: gaucoin13 at June 18, 2006 8:22 PM

Rather new to crossfit, so I will be asking alot of questions. Are most of you sticking to the 3 days on 1 off routine? I've really been into doing some kind of workout everyday and was wondering if anyone might be working out everyday as well?

Comment #7 - Posted by: RJM at June 18, 2006 8:32 PM

with regards to my workplace... NO i dont have my shirt off haha... BUT... I work at a store called Hollister, and I am a model there and have to look very good... I am also pursueing a modeling career. So yes.. when I say look fit, I mean it. Please comment.

kidweba,

There are a number of folks who do Crossfit who look GREAT. Obviously, your ultimate results will depend on your genetics. BTW, I think you'll get a better response in the Fitness category of the Message Board.

I realize your are new; just try the 3 on 1 off routine. I think you will appreciate the 1 off. Having said that, I occasionally find myself doing some type of cardio session on the 1 off.

For specific muscle building and sole improvement of your look, then a specialist training program with this purpose will be more effective than CrossFit.

Search T-Nation.com for many useful articles if you require this route.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Orrin at June 18, 2006 10:55 PM

I second Orrin. That said, get to the point where you've got 20 muscleups, a 450 lb. deadlift, 275 lb. clean and jerk, and a 3 minute Fran and you'll be plenty jacked, buff, ripped or whatever you wanna call it, for most purposes other than competitive bodybuilding.

Originally wrote down rounds 1 and 2 as 1 54 and 1 50, but think I must have made a timing error on my (analogue) wristwatch, as they didnt feel that much faster. It's the pullups that are slow! I'll bring a stopwatch next time. And some oxygen.

The 3 days on/ 1 day off is plenty if you are doing another sport.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Nick K at June 19, 2006 1:15 AM

Kidweba, I don't know that many people on cross fit place a premium on looking fit, rather than being fit. Not many I hope, but the answer to your question is yes, it makes you look fit. Happily, that's a direct result of being fit.

Kipping pullups or dead-hang pullups.
Is it "cheating" if you break the set of 20 pullups into a set of 10 before pushups, and a set of 10 after the squats?

Thanks!

Comment #27 - Posted by: john c at June 19, 2006 3:47 AM

I'm thinking this one is gonna be a smoker also, I'm gonna try an force Pukie this time. I've only seen him twice from working out very intensly before, but that was a few years ago...

Comment #28 - Posted by: ThumperGI at June 19, 2006 3:51 AM

yesterday being father's day, I woke-up late & decided to skip the gym and take my kids to the pool. During a rest break I hit the playground outside the pool for a an inpromptu "linda".

Linda was a little weak yesterday - 15 full rounds plus 5 pulls, 10 pu's and 7 squats. 90 degree (f) heat and romping in the pool sapped some strength.

One of the great CrossFit elements is, so many of the workouts can be done outside the gym. Especially good for people like me who travel a lot for work.

The bummer is Linda and Barbara are close sisters...fraternal twins.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Rob F at June 19, 2006 4:07 AM

Who are those mutants that does a round of Barbara in less than 3 minutes? They must'nt weigh awfully lot.

I personally is a somewhat huge guy, so I managed to do only 4 rounds before I had to toss the towel. The fastest was just about 7 minutes, the slowest just about 9 minutes.

If one must put up a fragile defence, I'll confess to doing yesterdays WOD just before todays, because I didn't have time yesterday. That went somewhat better though. Hit a PR on front squats with 3xbw (that'd be 3 reps with 1xbw!).

As a comment to kidweba, I'd have to say – as I move into my approx. fifth week of doing crossfit – I look better than ever, feel better than ever, and having achieved it in only a months time. My previous training background has been several types of martial arts, alot of biking and good ole' strength training/bodybuilding. What I have accomplished with pumping iron through one loooong booooooring year, crossfit has done for me in a months time, and with cardio and fun on top. It may sound like a bad commercial, but it's the truth.

Give it a try ...

This is my first post although I've been doing crossfit for a year. I want to say "Thanks" for the workouts and my increased fitness level. I am a Police Officer and was involved in a lengthy vehicle pursuit last week. The suspect jumped and ran from the car and I chased him over several fences (Thanks to practicing Parkour Vaults) until I caught him. After a breif struggle I was able to get the cuffs on him. I would not have had the energy left to secure the suspect after the foot pursuit if it had not been for crossfit. Thanks.

I have been doing crossfit since march of this year and before i was doing a work out called Freaky Natural, which is baisically a workout for bodybuilders, I have to say I gained some strength and size but nothing compared to what i am seeing from crossfit. Not only am I becoming more and more cut but I am also gaining size and relative strength, or functional strength. This is what I was looking for. I think you would be extremely happy as I know the store you work out and have seen some the "models" that work there. I am sure you will end up with the look you wnat if you follow the work outs and eat a healthy diet. Give it a shot, it cant hurt you.

Squats are always air squats (without weight), unless otherwise specified. Look at the FAQ on this site for questions like this http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/faq.html

A side benefit of doing CrossFit is that you look fitter. That being said, it is much more gratifying to focus on what you can do, and how you feel, than how you look -- most of us DO NOT look good while doing CrossFit... if you look good, you aren't working hard enough.

At the gym I'll just put some weights or a heavy bodybar on my feet... At home I'll just find something to stick 'em under.

Personally I do a 2/1 split - 2 days CF and 1 day active rest (which is typically a sport or other physical activity, like yoga, etc.). I also perform the WODs a week behind. That way I'm better able to plan my week around other activities, injuries (if any), vacations, traveling for work, etc. Additionally, by doing the WODs a week late, you can plan the crazy long WODs (say, for example, Murph shows up) when you have the time, like on the weekends. I've gotten better results using this setup and have actually been more consistent with the WODs. Who hasn't had a situation like trying to fit something like Murph in after getting home from work at 6 (on a Friday night) but before a hot dinner date at 7. Yeah, not a good idea. The only thing you have to watch out for on this plan is to avoid picking and choosing your favorite WODs. You still have to get beat down on a regular basis.

Kidweba #3

Looking fit is just a by-product of CF. That said, CF may not be the best program if your main goal is to get really big, if you need body-specific measurements, and/or you want a specific "look." Traditional bodybuilding programs might be a better fit for you (as you can tweak them to produce all kinds of specific results).

Comment #87 - Posted by: Ell at June 19, 2006 9:27 AM

Did Barbara at the local park at 6:00am. The best think about training before breakfast is that there is nothing to throw-up(usually). Pukie hit after the situps on round four. I totally missed seeing the "rest 3 minutes" part. Totaly time was 25:37. Some old lady asked me if I was ok- obvious answer was "NO".

To kidweba, if you just wanna look good, there are much less painful ways to do it. This stuff sucks (but I can't stop).

Comment #95 - Posted by: Robert@ FtCarson at June 19, 2006 9:55 AM

This is my 2nd week following the WOD's and this one killed me! Ok so I thought I was in pretty good shape. Maybe not so much. As you can see my times are less than stellar, BUT I did finish.

okay, so obviously I ran out of steam there towards the end. I actually contemplated getting the oxygen off the engine here at the fire station and taking a few hits, but my coworkers would never let me live that down. Then again I don't see any of them attempting Crossfit. Next time I hope to cut down these times quite a bit.

Comment #96 - Posted by: Matt at June 19, 2006 9:56 AM

Not sure what the breakout was, but it took me 42 minutes to complete (including the rests). So I guess it was 42-12(breaks)/5= avg. of 6 mins per round. The squats is what slowed me down. Filthy 50 is worse.

Kidweba:

Not sure if you are male or female, but most "fitness models" do less intense workouts than crossfit and focus specifically on creating an aesthetic look through bodybuilding and low bodyfat. Also if you look at Men's Fitness or the like, look at their abs: they get liposuction to create extra-freaky abs without being totally ripped.

However if you found a trainer to incorporate crossfit along with some exercises to create the shape you are looking for it certainly could not hurt. I think you will also need some minor lipo and hair removal along the way.

Perhaps you could post a picture somewhere so we can see where you are now?

Killed the first two sets in under 6 minutes. I slowed down on the pull ups to keep my lunch down. After the sour taste bubbling back up I was pretty much at war with pukie.

Pullup were w/o kipping and I finished up all five sets in

Next time a 3 minute rest might help out

Comment #160 - Posted by: swift scout at June 19, 2006 2:41 PM

I did rounds of 5 pullups, 10 pushups, 15 situps and 20 squats. Started with 40# assist for the pullups (first 7) and switched to 50#. Going by the wall clock, times were approximately:

2:00
4:00 (fumbling with Grav weight)
3:00
2:45
2:15

One of the personal trainers at the gym told me my air squat form sucked and that I would hurt my knees, but I just looked at the slide show again and I'm pretty sure it was perfect! Hmmm...

Barbara is EVIL!

This one almost did me in--never felt worse afterward than I did today

rd 1-forgot to start watch like a moron. Whole round was completely unbroken (pumped about knocking out all 20 pull-ups) Went pretty quick, probably just slightly over 3:00
rd 2- hitting a wall already; 4:21 broken sets
rd 3- 5:52 badly broken sets, doing mostly jumping pull-ups
rd 4: 7:44 badly broken sets
rd 5: Didn't think I was going to answer the bell, but got inspired. 7:01 Was about to drop dead--great workout.

"Barbara"- 5 Rounds of:
20 Pullups - on doorway gym
30 Pushups - done on rings
40 Situps - legs anchored
50 Squats - as rx'ed

Round 1: 6:59
Round 2: 9:10
Round 3: 10:16
Round 4: 11:07
Round 5: 11:14(9:14 but took a 5min rest not a 3min so 2min went into my time)
My Date with Barbara ended with a beating from her uncle Pukie

Ring Pushups were my weakness by far, almost ~5 minutes extra per round. then pullups were ~2min a round.

Hey-

WOD "Sticky Barbara" 5 rounds
WU jump rope 5min with DUs

10 HSPU
20 pullups
30 pushups
40 situps
50 squats
60 box jumps @ 24"
20 double box jumps @ 12"

Time-65:20min

I din't follow the recommended workout cause I wanted the box jumps today real bad, ... and boy were they real bad. They left me sweaty and prone on the floor.

Next, a little work with my caber and toss the 42lb weight for height. Followed by a couple extra smooth honey brown lagers.

Good luck in your training,

-K

Coach
Do you advocate Ab Mat situps for WODs? I've been CFing for over a year and I'm generally fairly competitive with Matt G's times and loads (i'm also about 165lbs, 6%BF, strict adherence to the Zone), but my fastest set (all unbroken)was 3:37. My slowest event, by far, was situps (on the Ab Mat, non-anchored feet). I became a convert to kipping pullups a while ago, and greatly increased my speed and quantity. Is there a similar belief in pushups and situps (i.e., pushups not chest-to-floor then up to full extension...crunches or anchored situps). Or am i just that weak?

First of all ... I am amazed by some of the times posted ... great job!

I wanted to get some bike miles in so I did that prior to doing the WOD ... don't know when I am going to learn! I have to get over my cardio addiction!

Anyway, did a 12.3 mile ride (45min) on a stationary bike.

Did as Rx'd except for subbing Lateral Pull Downs at 60 lb. for the Pull Ups.

Round 1: 9:04 (really bad and should have rested a little more after the bike ride, had a lot of transition time also)
Round 2: 8:26 (decreased some of the transition time)
Round 3: 7:29.69 (no transition ... said hell with it and did all of it right in the thick of all of the boys working out!)
Round 4: 7:19.63
Round 5: 7:05 (had to decrease lat pull down weight to 50 lb)

Great workout!!

Good:
I had the willpower to stick out a tough workout on a 95 degree day.

Not so Good:
I didn't have the sense to pace myself on a 95 degree day. If I didn't push too hard I certainly went to the edge. Still, no Pukie. A cold bath helped my head stop spinning.

Ahhhhh shoot- As soon as I finished I realized I screwed up the timing aspect. I forgot to time the individual rounds and rest between them. Instead I went straight through. I tried gassing it from the get-go to see how far I'd get before I blew. Made it to round 4 before I started coming unravelled and then paid for it.

All pull-ups strict deadhang, non-kipping but with broken sets. Not a fantastic result but I am pretty pleased to have finished this one on my first go after only a month on xfit.

I'm pretty stoked that I have done over 160 pull-ups in the last two days and my shoulders appear to be still attached (tomorrow might be a different story when DOMS sets in). Xfit rocks.

3:55; 4:25; 4:30; 4:30; 4:45. Markedly worse than last time when all under 4 mins. Excuses: did pushups on parallettes. Squats getting deeper. And I think (judging by needing to lie down and sweat for 20 minutes afterwards) not 100% well.

Ok--the last one I cheated by using 50 lbs. assist on the pullups. From second round on used progressively greater assist (or I would be doing this still tomorrow morning)--10, 24, 42. But it was the squats that almost made me puke.

Comment #232 - Posted by: Rick M. at June 19, 2006 6:29 PM

4:29,4:58,7:35,8:37,8:02 = total 33:41 vs 4:40,6:16,7:35,8:14,7:30 (ah, crampy visited my calves--did pullups, push ups, but only 10 sit ups and 10 squats in 5th round) or 34:15 1/17/06 vs 39:37 on 6/16/05.

pr 16 pull ups in 1st set. 10 min ellip w/u 14/14. hr avg 132, hr max 163. calf cramps an issue again--think anchored sit ups, while faster, were cause. wonderfully brutal. wasn't sure i'd finish all 5 rds.

I lost the paper that I had wrote my times down on so for a guestmate time

1. Eight minutes and change
2. Nine minutes and change
3. Ten minutes and change
4. Seven minutes and change
5. Eight minutes and change

I did the pushups with 10lbs in the vest and used push up bars for the first
Three rounds. So that, and waiting for people to get out of the way, really added up my time.

I started cramping on the third set. Anyone have a sure fire cure for that? I drink water all day long.

#235 Neil - "I started cramping on the third set. Anyone have a sure fire cure for that? I drink water all day long."

I used to get cramps really bad when wrestling (two months ago), and I started adding more salt and potassium (raisins) to my diet. I also drank a lot more water before practice to ensure I was well hydrated. I've read that drinking pickle juice is a surefire cure. I tried it once and didn't get cramps, but can't say if it was the pickle juice that helped. Who wants to drink pickle juice?

15 sit-ups
20 squats

i think the last rnd is off, after i finished my knee was killing me and i didn't look at the clock.

all pu were dead hangs w/ strict form until the end of the 5th rnd (mix of jump and kip for reps 17-20). thought about kipping- and it probably would have helped my time, but i think the smith machine i was using for pullups would have tipped over or would have fallen apart. what is suggested form for pull ups on this one, dead hang or kipping? kipping is the only way i can imagine people putting up sub 3 min rnds, which i think is truely incredible. good work.

lastly, are there any cf'rs in the chattanooga, tn area. will be moving there in a couple weeks.

Revision to posting #208 to include Ricky's times...

Ricky's happy to report that he's back in action, almost. He got three rounds before the stars were out in full force and thinks he needs to pace himself next time.

Total times are inclusive of 3 min rest b/w rounds...

Ricky: 4:10, 5:25, 6:50, still going, still going... = 22:25 (three rounds only)
Rich: 4:22, 5:16, 6:37, 8:09, 7:01 = 43:25
Phil: 5:00, 5:15, 6:45, 8:45, 9:15 = 47:00
Sam: 9:01, 7:46, 8:14, 8:36, 9:17 = 54:54
Kaler 6:00, 6:15, 7:45 = 26:00 (three rounds only)
Clint 55:54 (based on Sam’s time)
Matt: 40:00 (and he’s sticking to his story – i.e. he just raised the bar for himself next time!)

My buddy, Tony M. from State College, PA gave Crossfit a try today.

Barbara was his first CF workout:

1. - 6:29!
2. - 6:15 *15 pullups, all else completed
3. - 7:09 *9 pullups, all else completed
4. - 8:16 *3 pullups, 24 pushups, 38 situps, 50 squats
5. - 7:54 *2 pullups, 19 pushups, 35 sit ups, 50 squats

I asked, "What happened with the pullups?"

Tony wrote: "Pullups. Damn. I just burned out on these. I tried doing a reverse grip (palms facing me), regular grip. I just.... couldn't.... pull....up."

Seth: 1=4min, 2=5:58, 3=7min, 4=7:44, 5= 20 PU on my second push up which is one of my stronger exercises I felt and heard something pop in my lower left trap.. Game over for the next day or two.. I am going to have my first deep tissue massage today in hopes of speeding up recovery...

Rox decided to do one weak set after she saw me writhing in pain.. Did not have the energy to push her harder..

Catherine: 7:22, 4:34, DNF (left for work)
Tim: 3:04, 4:22, 3:34, DNF (could not move)

Full 'Barbara' as rx'ed on each round (Catherine did pullups with innertube assistance, and knee pushups) OMFG. Now I understand why people do these 'Barbie' and 'Barbara Lite' workouts... so that they can complete the workout without collapsing.

My goal was to hit around 3:00 on each round. DNF!

forgot to add: CFWU + 1min jump rope btw WU sets,

my bw: 184 (lost 4 pounds over the weekend at 14K)

I had no altitude sickness what-so-ever this weekend despite having been under 8K for weeks. I felt nearly as good at 14,000' as I usually do at 8,000', and my power-endurance is improving rapidly. CF has been working out nicely for me. My squats were very poor today as a result of postholing hip-deep snow for over a mile on Saturday; maybe on Thursday I'll try and redeem myself with the Filthy Fifty, or Angie.

Thank you for the wonderful resource, Coach.

Barbara"
Five rounds, each for time of:
20 Pull-ups
30 Push-ups
40 Sit-ups
50 Squats
Rest 3 minutes between each round.
Round 1 = 5:35
Round 2 = 6:23
Round 3 = 6:39
Round 4 = 7:23
Round 5 = 8:24

This bitch almost killed me! I have been walking funny all day and fighting to keep my legs from buckling. I think the deadlift and front squats on the previous work outs did me in here.

Ouch!
1 mile @ 7.5

WOD scaled down to 10/20/30/40

Total time with run was 45 minutes.

I didn't do all the sit-ups either, had nothing to hold my feet down, last two rounds I did 10 unanchored sit-ups only, helped keep the pace up. All pull-ups unbroken, only the last round did I break up the pushups, last two rounds had to break up the squats. I felt sick, afterwards I couldn't walk on the treadmill at 3mph, had to go sit on the bike at a lazy 60rpm. Could barely pull myself out of bed today. This one was sneaky.

I can believe the 4 and 5 minute times but 5 rounds under 3 minutes each with 3 minutes rest? Every once in a while I think we need to do a reality check or at least explain that you kipped or did jumping pull ups.

AK; For info on why kipping is so popular here, just search it on the message board for lots of reasons.

Personally, I have seen on the job many times where people have to get a functional muscle up done. As one example, in order to get up through a hatch in the floor onto the next level, all while wearing a load of equipment and gear, etc. Simply doing a strict pull up would be too slow and difficult with all the extra weight. A kipping p/u enables you to get all that extra weight up in a hurry, and up high enough to get to your next objective. For work (and reasons like wanting to live) this has to be done the fastest way possible, which is to kip. Thats why a lot of us do it.

There are other reasons (ie, we kip to make the muscles able to do more work in a shorter period of time, for athletic/explosive training reasons, to be productive, etc). Body building and concertrating on bulding muscle mass are not one of the reasons to kip, and not our focus.

I certainly kip when doing chin ups, but that is far from cheating; simply making the work out more effective and functional, IMHO.

WOD as rx'd (not under 3 min btw);

Nearly DNF'ed round 4 and didn't even bother starting 5

4:42, 5:32, 6:07 and 7:34

Highlights - got 19 straight pull-ups on first round (PR by 2) not quite straight arm at bottom but close and all head above bar. Sit-ups all unbroken (unanchored w/ hands sliding along floor) and all squats unbroken.

Lowlights - just felt sluggish and weak all through. Maybe a little long between meals but I have neglected my bodyweight work and it showed. Nowhere near Pukie as strength endurance faded first.

Solution - start doing the CF warm-up!!

Cheers, kempie

Did this on 6/20 as I am a day behind. I'm not sure I've ever been as devestated after a CF WoD as I was for this one. I couldn't get from my car to the cleaners aftrwards to pick up my suits. I had to rest halfway because I was dizzy, then duck into the Subway next door for a large fruit punch before continuing on. Ecchh.

CrossPit workout bore a striking (pun intended) resemblance to Barbara:

3 rds.
30 sprawls
30 push ups
30 squats
30 sit ups
30 sprawl w/ 1-2 punch on heavy bag

take one minute rest between each round. See Jason when you finish.

Now for the cool part...if you finished 1st-3rd, you owe 10 burpees. If you finished 4th-6th, you owe 20 burpees. If you finished 7th-9th, you owe 30 burpees, etc.

Finished Pack (20 reps) in 23:40 + 20 burpees (finished fourth)

I completed 3 rds: 4:02; 4:32; and 6:31. I cut the four rd short by doing 25 sit-ups and squats and therefore did not time it.

Pull-ups were unbroken thru 4 rds. Sit-ups broke on second rd and were clearly the weak link through out. Push-ups broke on third rd.; squats on the 4th.

Pullups deteriorate fast.

By the end I was promptly kicked out of the gym! :))
Well, I wasn't actually kicked out, but they heavily complained about the sweat and chalk mess I left (though I was cleaning when finished) and I told them to shove it and quit.

Last time I tried this (6 months ago) I couldn't imagine doing it as RXed. I reduced all reps by 10 and by round 4 had to further decrease all reps, this time by half. Fast forward 6 months and I'm knocking this one down as RXed in a reasonable amount of time. Thanks coach!

As rx'd;
Round 1 = 4:55
Round 2 = 5:26
Round 3 = 7:08
Round 4 = 8:00
Round 5 = 14 pullups - hit the wall hard and didn't want to puke in a public gym. Didn't eat well and paid for it.
