AAHHH the Filthy Fifty, I remember this one....

Comment #1 - Posted by: Rafael at June 1, 2006 4:22 PM

This will be a good one. If I thought I was getting looks at the gym before, I can't wait for tomorrow.

Get it DONE.

Second time doing this one for me, first WOD ever for my bro...muahaha!
Good luck Mikey

Comment #4 - Posted by: Steve-O at June 1, 2006 5:28 PM

I'm going to be subbing straight leg deadlifts for the back extensions.....What is the standard amount of weight to use for those? I tried searching but didn't see any set weight listed.

Comment #5 - Posted by: SDB at June 1, 2006 5:29 PM

Ahhhhh.... The Filthy Fifty. Aka, Chuck Norris! I'll be preparing tonight for the swift kick in the Huevos that this ends up being.

Get some, Go again!

Comment #6 - Posted by: DJ at June 1, 2006 5:29 PM

For the jumping pull ups, is it better to use a bar that you can grab while standing and jump to get your chin over it, or is it better to use a bar that you have to jump to just to grab it?

Comment #7 - Posted by: kevin at June 1, 2006 5:44 PM

Kevin- Which would make the workout more challenging? Go w/the bar you have to jump up and pull. Though this isn't a sub, a good rule of thumb that has been driven home many times here is to sub up, not down.

Comment #8 - Posted by: DJ at June 1, 2006 5:48 PM

Has the June newsletter been sent out yet?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Dave P at June 1, 2006 5:57 PM

what are the knees to elbows, the slide show wont load on my computer, also should you use any weight for the walking lunges

Comment #10 - Posted by: Drew at June 1, 2006 6:04 PM

Drew- Hang off the pull-up bar, bring your knees up to you elbows using your abs and not swinging. Lunges are done w/out weight.

Comment #11 - Posted by: DJ at June 1, 2006 6:08 PM

This was the first CrossFit workout I ever did back on 4/27. I thought I was going to puke afterwards in a way I hadn't felt before or since. I can't wait to make this workout my b!+c# tomorrow!

Brian- Nice!

Comment #16 - Posted by: DJ at June 1, 2006 6:48 PM

subs for wallballs & double unders (no med balls or jump ropes)? Also, what is 1 pood?

Comment #17 - Posted by: Reed at June 1, 2006 6:53 PM

Is this typically done 1 exercise to completion at a time, or have people done it in rounds or otherwise split up?

Comment #18 - Posted by: Matt Mackey at June 1, 2006 7:05 PM

Reed- Check the FAQ for the answer to that and other life altering Q's.

Matt Mackey- Each exercise is done to completion before moving on to the next. No splitting it up on this one.

Comment #19 - Posted by: DJ at June 1, 2006 7:10 PM

Started Tyler Hass' "3 weeks to muscle-up success" program this week on the Power Rings link. Felt like I came a lot closer just with the tips he gives. I've been doing crossfit for 8 or 9 months and it's about time I got this down!

Sub good mornings or stiff legged deadlifts for back extensions. Use the 45# bar if you have not done this before. Some folks do "supermans." BTW who can clean more, Superman or Chuck Norris?

Comment #24 - Posted by: Kegger at June 1, 2006 9:14 PM

the 500 spartans, nice!
sorry, lame attempt at making up a cool name.
...also,I just found out back extensions are not supermans. I was taught the CFWU with supermans, so now I always do supermans, should I be using the GHD for the CFWU instead?

Comment #25 - Posted by: juan gonzalez at June 1, 2006 9:56 PM

Juan- I would go w/the Roman Chair (GHD). Feel lucky you have one. The gym I workout at doesn't.

Pierre- I like that one.

Maybe I missed it in the FAQs, but what is the substitute for the knees to elbows and the kettle bell?

I assume a dumbbell for the kettlebell.

Just 2 weeks into CF, so I know I don't have the stomach/back and arm strength to do the knees to elbows, is there a substitution?

Comment #32 - Posted by: JGG at June 1, 2006 10:53 PM

You'll see mine tomorrow. I didn't take offense as much as I like calling people out who are trolling. I kinda like confrontation. Post your times tomorrow, if you're even going to do the WOD, and we'll carry on this conversation then. Besides, this will probably be cleaned off the site and you'll be able to cry again another day.

Was planning to to the "50" at the 24 hr fitness, but, I could see no way to feasably complete it, since it was during peak times. Will attempt when I go during less busy hours.

Instead I monopolized one of the two racks.
ME Hang Clean and Jerk: 185x3, 205x3, 5x(225x3)
FS 135x5, 185x5, 225x5
Back Squat Bar holds, 5 seconds at bottom per rep: 135x5
same, 10 seconds at bottom, 135x5

Post WO Row 1K: 3:34.7, Damper 7.(might be a PR). Pretty sure I have sub 3:30 in me, when fresh.

Holy S**t, I didn't even read above. Happy birthday Alex! That's funny...maybe EVERYONE should do the filthy fifty on their birthday--it makes sense in a crazy going-against-the-grain Crossfit sort of way.

PS Alex, keep it up! I've only got twenty years on you.

Comment #40 - Posted by: Tristram at June 2, 2006 12:36 AM

RE: the link

While i'm blabbing, and, well, it is my birthday so I feel permitted, I will say that, though originally from the South, I now live in Denver, Colorado and have had the opportunity to see some great rock climbers... And what they can do is nothing short of astounding. I swear, for pure strength, endurance, AND aesthetic, there's nothing that compares. To see someone hanging and surmounting a surface that is beyond vertical (where the person is climbing on a surface above them) is an unbelievable feat of strength. I've tried it. It's beyond hard... It's a beautiful thing. But that's what i love about Crossfit--it always encourages us into other disciplines.

Climbing is a worthy one. Let's see some articles on climbing in the Crossfit Journal!!

Comment #41 - Posted by: Tristram at June 2, 2006 12:58 AM

i had to sub 50 squats then 50 push ups for the burpees, should have probably done squat jumps but didn't think of it until now, our largest med ball was 12lbs, and double unders were extremely difficult and unlikely to occur so we jumed rope for 2 min. i met pukie and his more odorifourus cousin between wall ball and burpee, thank god i make it to the loo.

How many single rope jumps should I do instead of double unders? (I have not master these yet)

Comment #45 - Posted by: steve at June 2, 2006 2:04 AM

This was one of my first WODs a couple months ago, makes me nostalgic. Remember thinking, what have I gotten myself into?

#53 - single unders aren't even close to double unders, and I think the basic CF sub for doubleunders is something like tuck-jumps or other explosive jumping exercise. I have trouble with them too and try to jump rope as part of each warm up to get used to the rhythm and balance required and to see how many doubleunders I can do - not many right now.

50:30 -- bw 209.5 lbs (just checked this morning), hgt 6'4", age 31.

Started with 5 minutes jumping rope (skipped the CFWU today), then did everything as rx'd, except: the heaviest medicine ball my gym has is 10 lbs; no kettlebells, so used a 35lb dumbbell; and can't do double-unders yet, so subbed tuck-jumps instead.

- 38.5 lb dumbell instead of kettlebell
- Did back extensions over aforementioned punchbag with feet anchored as dont have GHmachine
- Tried double unders, but got so annoyed went back to jumping on the bag for the requisite reps - dont think my healing calf could have taken tuck jumps

You guys are killing me here. Its a black flag day, temp hit 130. Im going to subsitute double unders with more box jumps. We dont have a medicine ball here so I'm gonna try pushups with a clap as a subsitute. Waiting on the other guys to get off right now. I've been telling them about the 50 for a while now, hopefully it'll live up to the tale I've been telling.

Comment #67 - Posted by: Ian Harte at June 2, 2006 7:09 AM

Ian, the sub for wallball shots is usually DB thrusters, I believe. mimics the motion better than pushups will.

In two weeks I will get my commission and hopefully begin a successful career in Navy SPECOPS. My question is this, what reasources or advice could some of the warriors kindly send my direction to best prepare for navy dive school and EOD bomb school? Thank you for your help. ~MIDN Muka

Rest only for today as I prep for the US Nationals in KC next weekend. My lesson learned from the last competition is to allow more rest time in the week prior to comp and drill critical techniques. At 47 years, rest and recovery takes a wee bit longer.

I'm feeling great and have improved in each functional movement of the CF hopper.

Enjoy the weekend,

Doing this in under 20 minutes is smoking.
Nice work OPT!

Comment #95 - Posted by: bradw at June 2, 2006 10:21 AM

32:20, 4 mins slower than last time.

Subbed supermans for back extensions and 40# dumbell for KB's.

Still can't do more than 2 consecutive double unders, but I did complete all 50.

As usual, burpees are my time killer. Almost 10 mins to do the 50.

Subbed tuck jumps for DUs, otherwise as Rx.

20 Jump Pull-ups (Total Gym Level 10)
20 KB swings, 1 pood
Walking lunge, 20 steps
20 push press, 30 pounds
20 Plyotoss shot, 8 pound ball
20 Jump Squats
20 Pushups

Pukie Talked, but I ignored him.

Comment #100 - Posted by: Jerimiah Childress at June 2, 2006 10:33 AM

Took 2 whole weeks off to let some minor injuries heal-- the Norris 500 was not a pleasant welcome back.

50 box jumps (probably a 18" platform)
25 jumping pull-ups, 25 pulldowns w/ 110 lbs
50 DB swings with 35 pounder, broken at 25
Walking lunge 50 steps
Subbed 50 sit-ups for KTEs
50 push press w/ 45 lb bar
50 back extensions, broken at 25, lower back supertight
LEFT OUT WALL BALL SHOTS! (Unintentional--must have been delirious at this point)
30 Burpees as rx'd, 20 w/ no p/u or jump
50 double unders broken in 5,5, 10,10,20 all w/ single skip in between

30:56 Really only a Filthy 450-I pay my penalty next time. Still a butt-kicker

Comment #101 - Posted by: Nick at June 2, 2006 10:39 AM

What a great workout. If I would have eaten lunch prior to workout no chance of holding it in. With no rest and just as hard and as fast as I could with a time of 24:30. Its been about an hour since I finished and my body is still shaking. No Pain No Gain

45:45 with 2 20# DB for push-press and supermans for back extensions. 1:18 faster than last time, which I'm pretty happy with considering this is my first workout after 3 weeks of vacation in New York and Central Europe, with not much exercise and a lot of drinking.

For time:
50 Box jump, 22 inch box
50 Jumping pull-ups
50 Dumbbell swings, 35#
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows, shoulders, chest (in that order as time went on)
50 Push press, 45 pounds
50 Back extensions
50 Thrusters, 20# dumbbells
50 Burpees
50 Tuck Jumps

Total time = 42:45

Notes: Was at somewhere around 23 minutes after the back extensions and completely hit the wall. Thrusters took 9 minutes and burpees took 8 minutes. In any event, this was a 13 minute PR with better execution and closer to Rx'd than the previous PR.

Comment #110 - Posted by: Nicholas in SA at June 2, 2006 11:13 AM

I'm beat...

35# DB for KB
Good mornings with bar for Back Extensions
20 pound dumbells for thruster instead of wall ball shots
200 single unders as I just couldn't master the double unders.

First time for the Filthy 50, and I wanted to get a sub-25 minute time, but I was breathing too hard at times to go any faster. Finished off with a circuit class again: board push, mountain climbers, medicine ball PUs, lunges, lat pulls, backwards treadmill sprints, mountain climbers, calt raises, jump rope, DBDLs, ab roller, high knees, DB press, DB cleans, more abs, and some physio ball PUs. All X 2 rounds. 50 seconds each station, 10 seconds to switch.

Got some, went again.

BW 133 As Rx'd

The Burpies killed me, I was humming along until the knees to elbows, and then caught some wind which wall-ball promptly knocked out of me only to face burpees. I was demoralized doing them in sets of 12/12/8/8/6/4. I have a speed rope so double unders seemed a cake walk after the Burpees.

Morning exercise was a 35 mile ride to work with a 20 minute time trial effort on a fixed gear. Heart rate of 190+ for 20 minutes.

Aw, crap, bad timing!
Got bored yesterday, so put my unit through this synthesis of "Tears of Chuck" and "Tabata Something Else"-

Jumping Pullups
Elevated Pushups (4 ft.)
Rock Climbers (forearm smoker)
Turkish Getups (dumbells)
Arch Rock
Kettlebell Swing (with big irregular stones!)

each station got 4x 20seconds max effort/10 seconds rest, then rotate, making an 18 minute smoke session. Not as bad actually as Tears, but still pretty fierce. You all don't mind if I pass on the Fifties today?

Age:42, Wt:178, Time:45:40 (DNF)

I am still not worthy of cleaning Chuck Norris' boots, as I didn't finish this workout.

50 box jumps 24" box
50 jumping pullups
50 DB swings 40#
50 lunge steps
10 KTE - These felt like I was being stabbed in the gut by Chuck himself.
50 push press 40#
50 back extensions
50 wall balls with homemade 20# ball
25 burpees
0 double unders (that's a big fat zero)

I might have been able to finish the burpees and double unders if I didn't have to rush out of the gym to take my son to school, but the 25 burpees I did do looked like I was falling down and picking myself up in state of exhaustion. The last time we did this WOD I could only do 20 reps of each exercise with (20# DB, -70lbs on gravitron, 2 KTE's, and a 10# medicine ball) in ~17 minutes. The next time we do this WOD I will finish it.

Comment #156 - Posted by: Donald E at June 2, 2006 3:28 PM

Kevin (#141): For me, personally, I would do 25 of each exercise, but do all the movements. That would go down in about 40% - 45% as much time as the full 50 reps. You may need to adjust accordingly.

Ouch! Subbed SLDLs w/45lbs for back ext. Last three exercises were done in a No. VA gully washer - tough DUs in a puddle but rain kept me from being a heat case. 29:55 - a few seconds slower than last time but I'll take it.

For me the last time I did the Filthy Fifties I did a 58 minutes time. So I am very happy with how I am doing personally. As a coach I am very happy to see the boys do so well at this workout and loveing the competition part. The last three on the list BW Matt-265, Buford-260, Bobbie-300 their goal was to keep up with or beat me, great competitive push for me. We had a great day! Hope you all do too! :]

Previous time was 22:39, so improvement of 0:46. Not great; hoped for sub-20.

Burpees were the killer on this one.

Grip was the weak link for KTEs.

Slower on the lunges and burpees than last time.

Sets less broken than last time, except double-unders.

Subbed 40# dumbbell swing for 1 pood kettlebell swings.
Subbed 40# vertical dumbbell toss for wallball shots
Subbed 25 HSPU for push-press
Stopped after 13 burpees.

I'm really disappointed in myself for stopping, but had other obligations. I'll make up the burpees and double-unders tomorrow.

12# med ball
This is the 4th time at this workout. Each time I am improving. Each time I do the workout closer to the way it is written. This time I even had enough go-juice at the end for double unders. Thanks Coach.

Julie 21:38
25 reps throughout
12 # med ball
10# dumbbell for swings
no pushup on burpees
tuck jumps
Much better than last time for her too. Slower time, but she did more and better reps and did all exercises this time.

Comment #189 - Posted by: Rob_M at June 2, 2006 5:55 PM

subbed 40# DB's for push press and Straight Leg Dlift for BE w/40# DB

I broke, DNF...I am whipped. I was on a great pace (26 min through 20 wall balls) when I plain flat bonked. I could not get myself to pick up the ball. No burpees and no DU.

This might be the sign I need to take a rest week.

almost 3 minutes faster than last time. My pull-up bar is 7' so the jumping PU's are easy and the KTE are jump assisted. (same as last time).
still this is a ball buster!!! i love it!

I only had 30 minutes to squeeze this in- fit it in by limiting burpess to 25. Otherwise, as rx'd. I was dead at that point, so the other 25 would have taken 4 to 5 minutes.

Comment #213 - Posted by: Laine Lindsey at June 2, 2006 7:19 PM

:03 slower then my PR. I blame that on attending a command BBQ 2 hours prior, where I was forced to eat tri-tip and drink adult beverages. That and attacking this one in a new way. Instead of selling out, I broke everything into sets of 15,15,15,10 w/a 3 breath brake in between. Thought it might leave me some gas for the end... It didn't.

My knee is killing my now. Think I'll turn to the medicinal properties found in fermented hops and barley to aid in reducing the inflammation. Aaarrrggghhhh!!!

I see a lot of people making good strides in their times out there. Keep it up! You all are kicking some Arsssss!!!

150 Box jumps, 8 inch box
6 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 Kettlebell swings, 1 pood
6 L-pullup/KTE combos
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
6 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 Push press, 45 pounds
6 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 Back extensions
5 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 thrusters, 1 pood KB held bottoms-up
5 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 Burpees
5 L-pullup/KTE combos
50 Tuck Jumps
5 L-pullup/KTE combos

Brutal. Poor sleep and stress didn't help. The L-pullups/KTE combos subbed for the jumping pullups and the KTEs, they went like this:
Do a full L-pullup, from the arms extended L position, bring your knees to your elbows, then return to the L position. That's 1. I know these added a lot of time to my workout.

Ryan and Joe finished in 35minsm without doing burpees.

Comment #248 - Posted by: Franz at June 3, 2006 6:59 AM

My compliments to all. I only got 20 lunges, no burpees and no double-unders and it took me 63 minutes. I will endeavor to persevere.

Comment #250 - Posted by: Scott at June 3, 2006 7:21 AM

I think this was the most brutal WOD so far (for me); all exercizes broken, and here are my modifications:

50 stair jump (13")
50 jumping pullups (tubing assist)
50 dumbell swings (24#)
50 steps walking lunge
50 "knees to elbows" (about 15 KtoE, rest as high as I could)
50 push press (2x14# dumbells)
50 back extensions
50 wall ball 20# (threw in air, not at wall)
50 burpees
50 double-unders (can't tell you how many singles it took to work in the d-u's)

I'm so gassed, it's the next day and it still hurts to move:)

Comment #251 - Posted by: Sarah at June 3, 2006 7:23 AM

MURDERERS...most sets broken and form on some was comical.
Had to sub wall balls with dumbells. Gym doesnt have any.
Doing Burpees near the end was brutal.
Took over an hour with lots of gasping between sets.
51 years old, about 225lbs and recovering from completely torn achilles tendon last Sept. (I will never ever play tennis again)
Crossfitter for 1 month and loving it.
Beats doing the same old weightlifting routine.
Now if I could only get used to those stares I keep getting from the others in the gym.

39:12, As rx'd, minor subs.
Had to use 45 lb bb thrusters for wall-ball. No GHD, so I use the smith machine, bar low with weights, and hang off of a bench for back extnsns.

About same time as previous, which is a little disappointing, but I'll live.

I like this workout.

I subbed walking lunges with a 1/4 mile run (lunges bother my knees.)

Took about 55 minutes to get through it but... I used a higher box than last time and I actually performed all 50 burbees.

30 seconds slower than my pr, but I'm still getting back to form after a nasty bout with the flu.

Love the tears

Typical scales.

Comment #263 - Posted by: bingo at June 3, 2006 10:44 AM

57 mins.
Box jumps to std. wt. bench, sub 35# d/b for swings, back ext. split 50/50 on flat/angled, sub 15# med. ball wall balls, & 100 singles since I can't do double unders yet.

3 mins. faster than last time. Felt better throughout entire WOD, although I still hit the wall when I do burpees. My cardiovascular fitness is improving but is still far from where it can be.

Comment #264 - Posted by: Mike Scott at June 3, 2006 11:35 AM

Day behind @ bwt 170#....

1. CFWU x3 -PU -back ext

2. Filthy Fifty, subbed 35# DB for swings and 14# core ball for wallballs, at 53 mins

This was my first crossfit workout back on 4/27/06. At that time, I could only do 25x rep sets and barely finished. This time wasn't competitive compared to you animals, but I certainly feel better, fitter, and stronger.

Sincere thanks CrossFit!

Holy hell.....awesome workout!

Total time was 20:42, body weight 195#

50 box jumps
50 pull-ups
50 kettlebell swings (subbed a 25# plate)
50 walking lunges
50 KTE

50 back extensions
50 thrusters with 20# (no medicine ball)
50 burpees (murderous....took the longest time of all, broken into sets of 5 or 10)

No double unders because I didn't have a jump rope, but that's ok because I was seeing stars after the burpees. I prayed a few times too, for a higher power to pull me through. Real kick in the pants....great workout!

33 minutes - but didn't do double unders or a sub for them. Blew up doing the burpees and needed a get 10 minutes of gasping to start to recover.

Other subs - 22.5" box, 16kg DB for swings, 20kg straight leg DL for back extn.
