AAHHH the Filthy Fifty, I remember this one....
This will be a good one. If I thought I was getting looks at the gym before, I can't wait for tomorrow.
Get it DONE.
Second time doing this one for me, first WOD ever for my bro...muahaha!
Good luck Mikey
Ahhhhh.... The Filthy Fifty. Aka, Chuck Norris! I'll be preparing tonight for the swift kick in the Huevos that this ends up being.
Get some, Go again!
I'm going to be subbing straight leg deadlifts for the back extensions.....What is the standard amount of weight to use for those? I tried searching but didn't see any set weight listed.
For the jumping pull ups, is it better to use a bar that you can grab while standing and jump to get your chin over it, or is it better to use a bar that you have to jump to just to grab it?
Kevin- Which would make the workout more challenging? Go w/the bar you have to jump up and pull. Though this isn't a sub, a good rule of thumb that has been driven home many times here is to sub up, not down.
Has the June newsletter been sent out yet?
what are the knees to elbows, the slide show wont load on my computer, also should you use any weight for the walking lunges
Drew- Hang off the pull-up bar, bring your knees up to you elbows using your abs and not swinging. Lunges are done w/out weight.
This was the first CrossFit workout I ever did back on 4/27. I thought I was going to puke afterwards in a way I hadn't felt before or since. I can't wait to make this workout my b!+c# tomorrow!
this will be a birthday workout! :) i turn 15 tomorrow... thanks for the present crossfit!
Alex (#17) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and a fine present indeed;)
Alex, happy birthday.
ahhh..to be have found this site at 15 and realized it for what it is.
I'm just starting and don't come close at all to Rx'ing these things.
Happy B-day Alex. Your gift is the knowledge this site has. Like many here surely feel, it would of been nice to have had this wisdom at 15. Now Get some!
Brian- Nice!
subs for wallballs & double unders (no med balls or jump ropes)? Also, what is 1 pood?
Is this typically done 1 exercise to completion at a time, or have people done it in rounds or otherwise split up?
Reed- Check the FAQ for the answer to that and other life altering Q's.
Matt Mackey- Each exercise is done to completion before moving on to the next. No splitting it up on this one.
Started Tyler Hass' "3 weeks to muscle-up success" program this week on the Power Rings link. Felt like I came a lot closer just with the tips he gives. I've been doing crossfit for 8 or 9 months and it's about time I got this down!
What do I sub for back extensions? I don't have a GHD.
Thanks
Oh yea, tha filthy fifty! I can feel the pain already.

23:39 but I couldn't bear the burpees so completely blew them off. Shameful but true.
#25 Mardana
Sub good mornings or stiff legged deadlifts for back extensions. Use the 45# bar if you have not done this before. Some folks do "supermans." BTW who can clean more, Superman or Chuck Norris?
the 500 spartans, nice!
sorry, lame attempt at making up a cool name.
...also,I just found out back extensions are not supermans. I was taught the CFWU with supermans, so now I always do supermans, should I be using the GHD for the CFWU instead?
Juan- I would go w/the Roman Chair (GHD). Feel lucky you have one. The gym I workout at doesn't.
Pierre- I like that one.
This'll be ugly...
So does Ben Moon Crossfit??

It seems that my wish for all .. got crushed with sgt's post yesterday and an all political war went off.. my guess is that the book ( The Peacefull Warrior) relates to each and every one of you training out there..
so i post again .. our soldiers do their job and do it well! my heart goes out on a daily basis! bottom line crossfit is training us for ANYTHING that may come our way..win lose or draw.. crossfit is your best bet to victory!! steady as she goes capt.
In accordance with all that we crossfiters do:
After 20 years of following a path: a movie comes to
help explain that which otherwise would elude most of
us..
This is the book , handed to me some 20 years ago by a
guide,martial teacher,life long friend and brother,that
forever changed my life and has helped me through so
many of life's never ending struggles, enlightened my
view to all the wonder, and to feel all the joy that
comes in so many different forms. I cannot express my
gratitude to Dan Millman (author), and to my close
friends and family that have supported me in search of
the peacefull warrior that lies within all of us.
thanks, to CROSSFIT for their warrior support!! These are the workouts that bring mind, body and soul together in one accord. This is what we as humans seek in life...health,fitness and harmony with self and with others..
Please see clips and especially reviews/comments!!
Maybe I missed it in the FAQs, but what is the substitute for the knees to elbows and the kettle bell?
I assume a dumbbell for the kettlebell.
Just 2 weeks into CF, so I know I don't have the stomach/back and arm strength to do the knees to elbows, is there a substitution?
#36- Don't mistake people showing some fellowship by joking around w/whining. Your exposed and should be ashamed for not posting your real name. Who is really consumed w/fear? Don't be a J-Hole.
#38 DJ
Just post your times. You are exposed for taking offense.
Good Work out: 27:23 as Required.
Anyone sub the inverted burpies on this one?
RLTW
You'll see mine tomorrow. I didn't take offense as much as I like calling people out who are trolling. I kinda like confrontation. Post your times tomorrow, if you're even going to do the WOD, and we'll carry on this conversation then. Besides, this will probably be cleaned off the site and you'll be able to cry again another day.
Was planning to to the "50" at the 24 hr fitness, but, I could see no way to feasably complete it, since it was during peak times. Will attempt when I go during less busy hours.
Instead I monopolized one of the two racks.

As RX'd but used a 40lbs DB for the KB swings.
33mins, two faster than last time.
It's my 35th birthday today...The funny thing is that i was thinking of doing this as a demented birthday present to myself. I swear. And here it comes up. I guess it was meant to be...
Holy S**t, I didn't even read above. Happy birthday Alex! That's funny...maybe EVERYONE should do the filthy fifty on their birthday--it makes sense in a crazy going-against-the-grain Crossfit sort of way.
PS Alex, keep it up! I've only got twenty years on you.
RE: the link
While i'm blabbing, and, well, it is my birthday so I feel permitted, I will say that, though originally from the South, I now live in Denver, Colorado and have had the opportunity to see some great rock climbers... And what they can do is nothing short of astounding. I swear, for pure strength, endurance, AND aesthetic, there's nothing that compares. To see someone hanging and surmounting a surface that is beyond vertical (where the person is climbing on a surface above them) is an unbelievable feat of strength. I've tried it. It's beyond hard... It's a beautiful thing. But that's what i love about Crossfit--it always encourages us into other disciplines.
Climbing is a worthy one. Let's see some articles on climbing in the Crossfit Journal!!
I've watched the video, but my power of observation must be declining with age... can anyone explain the double unders to me... just jump rope...or??
#50 - The rope passes under your feet twice every time you jump
"ouch" this is going to leave a mark.
rob bwt:240 time:53:33
travis bwt:242 time: 56:45
i had to sub 50 squats then 50 push ups for the burpees, should have probably done squat jumps but didn't think of it until now, our largest med ball was 12lbs, and double unders were extremely difficult and unlikely to occur so we jumed rope for 2 min. i met pukie and his more odorifourus cousin between wall ball and burpee, thank god i make it to the loo.
Anyone..
How many single rope jumps should I do instead of double unders? (I have not master these yet)
Thanks
Steve
This was one of my first WODs a couple months ago, makes me nostalgic. Remember thinking, what have I gotten myself into?
#53 - single unders aren't even close to double unders, and I think the basic CF sub for doubleunders is something like tuck-jumps or other explosive jumping exercise. I have trouble with them too and try to jump rope as part of each warm up to get used to the rhythm and balance required and to see how many doubleunders I can do - not many right now.
19:48 as rx'd, 20;12 last time, 12 before that
finally sub 20! yey for me
...that was 21 min before 20:12...my bad
I was looking foward to this today but I forgot my sneakers at home so when I get home today I'll have to make something up to do with the number 50...hm....

Jason great job and thanks for timing us Dave.
50:30 -- bw 209.5 lbs (just checked this morning), hgt 6'4", age 31.
Started with 5 minutes jumping rope (skipped the CFWU today), then did everything as rx'd, except: the heaviest medicine ball my gym has is 10 lbs; no kettlebells, so used a 35lb dumbbell; and can't do double-unders yet, so subbed tuck-jumps instead.
But at least I finished! the last time this came up I think I only did about half the exercises.

20" box jump, Jump'ng Pu(First 7 dead hang),35#DB swing,Walking Lunges,Knee2Elbow (Did 10 then next 40 on Power stand), Push Press w/bar,Back extensions,Sub'd 2 20# DB Thrusters for WB, Only 25 Burpees and 10 Double unders.
Just crapped out at the end. Felt pitiful for not finishing. Maybe next time.
As Rx'd: 36:23. About a 15 minute improvement over my first time (can't remember it exactly, but it was over 50 minutes).
#47 OPT: My hat's off to you for that wicked time.
WOD:
Subbed DB swings 35lb and 25lb DB thruster for Wall Ball shots. Everything else as Rx'd.
Total time: 28:33
Looks like fun, however I don't have a bar/tree to do jumping pullups or knees to elbows, don't have a medicine ball for the wall ball, and I don't have enough weights to do the pushpress (only 20kilos on two small bars). Any ideas for substitutions?

27 minutes, only did 25 knees to elbows, and could NOT stomach the double unders. That was tough.
Struggling as I was not in good shape when I started this 2.5 weeks ago, so trying to work into this without hurting something :-)

25:05 with some subs
- Did jumps onto punchbag on it's side, as dont have box
- 38.5 lb dumbell instead of kettlebell
- Did back extensions over aforementioned punchbag with feet anchored as dont have GHmachine
- Tried double unders, but got so annoyed went back to jumping on the bag for the requisite reps - dont think my healing calf could have taken tuck jumps
You guys are killing me here. Its a black flag day, temp hit 130. Im going to subsitute double unders with more box jumps. We dont have a medicine ball here so I'm gonna try pushups with a clap as a subsitute. Waiting on the other guys to get off right now. I've been telling them about the 50 for a while now, hopefully it'll live up to the tale I've been telling.
Ian, the sub for wallball shots is usually DB thrusters, I believe. mimics the motion better than pushups will.

subs:
35 lb dumbbell swing for kettlebell
20 lb dumbbell thrusters for wall ball

Greetings,
Thank you for this method of training. Reading the postings and doing the daily workouts have really helped to realize some good gains in fitness. Additionally, I have started eating a zone balance diet and I have really felt the benefits of this lifestyle.
In two weeks I will get my commission and hopefully begin a successful career in Navy SPECOPS. My question is this, what reasources or advice could some of the warriors kindly send my direction to best prepare for navy dive school and EOD bomb school? Thank you for your help. ~MIDN Muka
Hey-
Did double-unders and 24" box jumps yesterday in my version of "Strange Barbara."
Rest only for today as I prep for the US Nationals in KC next weekend. My lesson learned from the last competition is to allow more rest time in the week prior to comp and drill critical techniques. At 47 years, rest and recovery takes a wee bit longer.
I'm feeling great and have improved in each functional movement of the CF hopper.
Enjoy the weekend,

warmed up with joint mobility stuff, then:
as rx'ed except subbed 200 normal jumps ("single-unders"?) for double-unders:

Subbed 35#db for kettle bell
Subbed jump knee tucks for double unders
Partioned everything except push press, back extensions, and box jumps.
Filthy Fifty-30:28.07

35lb DB for kettlebell
2x15lb DB Thrusters for wall-ball
rebound jumps for double-unders
45:45 with 2 20# DB for push-press and supermans for back extensions. 1:18 faster than last time, which I'm pretty happy with considering this is my first workout after 3 weeks of vacation in New York and Central Europe, with not much exercise and a lot of drinking.
Times Breakdown:
50 20" box jumps (2:15)
50 jumping pullups (1:11)
50 35# dumbell swing (1:02)
50 walking lunges (2:07)
50 KTEs (3:19)
50 push presses 45# (2:06)
50 back exts. (1:34)
50 20#, 10' wall ball (3:42)

50 Burpees
50 Tuck Jumps
Total time = 42:45
Notes: Was at somewhere around 23 minutes after the back extensions and completely hit the wall. Thrusters took 9 minutes and burpees took 8 minutes. In any event, this was a 13 minute PR with better execution and closer to Rx'd than the previous PR.
I'm beat...

35# DB for KB
Good mornings with bar for Back Extensions
20 pound dumbells for thruster instead of wall ball shots

First time for the Filthy 50, and I wanted to get a sub-25 minute time, but I was breathing too hard at times to go any faster. Finished off with a circuit class again: board push, mountain climbers, medicine ball PUs, lunges, lat pulls, backwards treadmill sprints, mountain climbers, calt raises, jump rope, DBDLs, ab roller, high knees, DB press, DB cleans, more abs, and some physio ball PUs. All X 2 rounds. 50 seconds each station, 10 seconds to switch.

need better technique when tired......
Well one week in and this work out shows up. I watched my boyfriend do the Filthy Fifties in April and was tired and sore watching him do it!! I had to substitute a few things due to lack of upper body strength but gave it an honest effort ...
50 Box Jumps
100 Lat Pull Downs at 65lbs
50 Kettlebell Swings with 12lb weight
50 Walking Lunges
50 Knees to Elbows (had to do them on a dip bar)
50 Push Press with 12lb weights
50 Back Extensions
50 Wall Ball Shots with 22lb homemade ball
50 Burpees - Torture ... really slowing down at this point and probably had horrible form
200 Single Unders
42 min 56 sec
Have a great weekend!
19:35
Subs:
25 lbs. thrusters for wall ball shots
35 lbs. DB swings instead of KB swings
38:24
However, I couldn't do anymore burpees after the 15th. i was dizzy and pretty much crap. so i finished the 50 with pushups. did struggle through the double unders.
34:52
Last time was 39 min!
I'm happy with progress. Crossfit kicks by butt but I come back for more everyday! Love the feeling afterwards...
As rx'ed except 20" box jump instead of 24"
43:25
1 min, 35 sec faster than last time and last time I only did single turns instead of doubles, supermans instead of back extensions and 45lb thrusters instead of wall ball shots.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the time.
DNF at ~35 min.
Got through 20 burpees but tweaky right wrist said no mas. I did complete the double unders.
Sold out early and was on pace for a PR finish, probably under 40 min.

The Burpies killed me, I was humming along until the knees to elbows, and then caught some wind which wall-ball promptly knocked out of me only to face burpees. I was demoralized doing them in sets of 12/12/8/8/6/4. I have a speed rope so double unders seemed a cake walk after the Burpees.
Morning exercise was a 35 mile ride to work with a 20 minute time trial effort on a fixed gear. Heart rate of 190+ for 20 minutes.
32:42 substituting knees-to-chest jumps for double-unders. Located 18# mediball to replace 11# mediball.
Down from >50 minutes in January and 41:24 last time. Bottleneck exercise remains knees-to-elbows.
Whoa!
age: 34 Bwt: 192#
Time: 55:21
Sub 35# DB for kettlebell, only 10lb med ball @ gym did them from sitting position.
Knee's 2 elbows hurt so bad. Took a long time but finished ;)
Question: Since I have to do these workouts during my lunch hour (and am still not that good at them yet), for the longer ones like todays and Angie, etc. Is it better to modify the numbers ie. 50 down 25-30 and do all of the exercises or start at the beginning as Rx'ed and stop when time runs out? Thanks for the help.
50 Box jump, Used flat bench
50 Kip'ed pull-ups
50 Db swings 35 lbs.
Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows
50 Push press, 45 pounds
50 Back extensions
50 Thrusters 20lbs each arm

I just boinked on the first set of burpees...just didn't have enough in the tank to keep going.
My first time doing the filthy fifty. I really enjoyed kicking my own ass. And seeing the looks on the gym rats' faces while I did it.
BW 198. Did entire workout listed. 31:23.
Filthy Fifty / Chuck Norris

Five minutes faster than last time, and last time did a few subs

Aw, crap, bad timing!
Got bored yesterday, so put my unit through this synthesis of "Tears of Chuck" and "Tabata Something Else"-
Jumping Pullups
Elevated Pushups (4 ft.)
Squats
Situps
Rock Climbers (forearm smoker)
Turkish Getups (dumbells)
Arch Rock
Kettlebell Swing (with big irregular stones!)
Burpees
each station got 4x 20seconds max effort/10 seconds rest, then rotate, making an 18 minute smoke session. Not as bad actually as Tears, but still pretty fierce. You all don't mind if I pass on the Fifties today?
Subbed 35# db for kettlebell swings
Everything else as rxd.

BW 202#
Subbed:

I am still not worthy of cleaning Chuck Norris' boots, as I didn't finish this workout.
50 box jumps 24" box
50 jumping pullups
50 DB swings 40#
50 lunge steps
10 KTE - These felt like I was being stabbed in the gut by Chuck himself.
50 push press 40#
50 back extensions
50 wall balls with homemade 20# ball
25 burpees
0 double unders (that's a big fat zero)
I might have been able to finish the burpees and double unders if I didn't have to rush out of the gym to take my son to school, but the 25 burpees I did do looked like I was falling down and picking myself up in state of exhaustion. The last time we did this WOD I could only do 20 reps of each exercise with (20# DB, -70lbs on gravitron, 2 KTE's, and a 10# medicine ball) in ~17 minutes. The next time we do this WOD I will finish it.
Kevin (#141): For me, personally, I would do 25 of each exercise, but do all the movements. That would go down in about 40% - 45% as much time as the full 50 reps. You may need to adjust accordingly.
60 bwt 281. I thought I was gonna die! 58 min, without burpees or double-unders--no rope and no energy left.

Oh yeah, started new job yesterday and have been pretty stressed. Could account for some of the slow down.

:03 slower then my PR. I blame that on attending a command BBQ 2 hours prior, where I was forced to eat tri-tip and drink adult beverages. That and attacking this one in a new way. Instead of selling out, I broke everything into sets of 15,15,15,10 w/a 3 breath brake in between. Thought it might leave me some gas for the end... It didn't.
My knee is killing my now. Think I'll turn to the medicinal properties found in fermented hops and barley to aid in reducing the inflammation. Aaarrrggghhhh!!!
I see a lot of people making good strides in their times out there. Keep it up! You all are kicking some Arsssss!!!

Right on bro. I would love to come check it out when it's all done. That's funny, I was just talking to a guy about eating Balut today. We'll have to sit down and have a few soon. Washed down w/some San Miguels of course. How's everything else in the PI?

Ouch - working my way back but still have a bum elbow. Sub'ed as follows reps 20 instead of 50, box jump was step jump (appros 12 inches),lying ring pull ups (thought they would be easier on my elbow but I was wrong), 20 lb DB swing, Goodmornings w/ 20lb bar instead of back ext, thrusters with 2 - 20lb DB's instead of wallball.
Quit after burpees due to pukie.

All you sub 30 minute folks, awesome jobs! Great efforts on a classic.
First time on this one... 28:58. How do I count the hour and a half of crying after I was done?
28:02 as required. I must have forgotten to do some reps! About a 3-minute improvement over last time.
30:05
Denied the sub 30 again. Although a 3:41 improvement over my last attempt with the same subs. I might have done better if I could watch the stopwatch - I ended up using my microwave timer.
jumping pull ups and KTE on rings
44 kb for swings (this time I did some one handed ones for good measure)
45lb good mornings for back extensions
planned to workout after work and school, but i took a pretty hard fall, so i've been icing my knees. anyway, excited to report that when i weighed myself today after wondering why my pants were looser today, i saw that i have in total lost 24 pounds. thanks cf

Brutal. Poor sleep and stress didn't help. The L-pullups/KTE combos subbed for the jumping pullups and the KTEs, they went like this:
Do a full L-pullup, from the arms extended L position, bring your knees to your elbows, then return to the L position. That's 1. I know these added a lot of time to my workout.
Ryan and Joe finished in 35minsm without doing burpees.
39:20...nearly all broken sets and I had to breakup the knees to elbows...but I finished!
whew.
My compliments to all. I only got 20 lunges, no burpees and no double-unders and it took me 63 minutes. I will endeavor to persevere.
I think this was the most brutal WOD so far (for me); all exercizes broken, and here are my modifications:
50 stair jump (13")
50 jumping pullups (tubing assist)
50 dumbell swings (24#)
50 steps walking lunge
50 "knees to elbows" (about 15 KtoE, rest as high as I could)
50 push press (2x14# dumbells)
50 back extensions
50 wall ball 20# (threw in air, not at wall)
50 burpees
50 double-unders (can't tell you how many singles it took to work in the d-u's)
I'm so gassed, it's the next day and it still hurts to move:)
MURDERERS...most sets broken and form on some was comical.
Had to sub wall balls with dumbells. Gym doesnt have any.
Doing Burpees near the end was brutal.
Took over an hour with lots of gasping between sets.
51 years old, about 225lbs and recovering from completely torn achilles tendon last Sept. (I will never ever play tennis again)
Crossfitter for 1 month and loving it.
Beats doing the same old weightlifting routine.
Now if I could only get used to those stares I keep getting from the others in the gym.
Oops...forgot my time. It is a bit forgettable, but good to improve upon: 63min
39:12, As rx'd, minor subs.
Had to use 45 lb bb thrusters for wall-ball. No GHD, so I use the smith machine, bar low with weights, and hang off of a bench for back extnsns.
About same time as previous, which is a little disappointing, but I'll live.
