I'm going to be subbing straight leg deadlifts for the back extensions.....What is the standard amount of weight to use for those? I tried searching but didn't see any set weight listed.

For the jumping pull ups, is it better to use a bar that you can grab while standing and jump to get your chin over it, or is it better to use a bar that you have to jump to just to grab it?

Kevin- Which would make the workout more challenging? Go w/the bar you have to jump up and pull. Though this isn't a sub, a good rule of thumb that has been driven home many times here is to sub up, not down.

Drew- Hang off the pull-up bar, bring your knees up to you elbows using your abs and not swinging. Lunges are done w/out weight.

It seems that my wish for all .. got crushed with sgt's post yesterday and an all political war went off.. my guess is that the book ( The Peacefull Warrior) relates to each and every one of you training out there..

Maybe I missed it in the FAQs, but what is the substitute for the knees to elbows and the kettle bell?

I assume a dumbbell for the kettlebell.

Just 2 weeks into CF, so I know I don't have the stomach/back and arm strength to do the knees to elbows, is there a substitution?

Was planning to to the "50" at the 24 hr fitness, but, I could see no way to feasably complete it, since it was during peak times. Will attempt when I go during less busy hours.

Instead I monopolized one of the two racks.
ME Hang Clean and Jerk: 185x3, 205x3, 5x(225x3)
FS 135x5, 185x5, 225x5
Back Squat Bar holds, 5 seconds at bottom per rep: 135x5
same, 10 seconds at bottom, 135x5

Post WO Row 1K: 3:34.7, Damper 7.(might be a PR). Pretty sure I have sub 3:30 in me, when fresh.

While i'm blabbing, and, well, it is my birthday so I feel permitted, I will say that, though originally from the South, I now live in Denver, Colorado and have had the opportunity to see some great rock climbers... And what they can do is nothing short of astounding. I swear, for pure strength, endurance, AND aesthetic, there's nothing that compares. To see someone hanging and surmounting a surface that is beyond vertical (where the person is climbing on a surface above them) is an unbelievable feat of strength. I've tried it. It's beyond hard... It's a beautiful thing. But that's what i love about Crossfit--it always encourages us into other disciplines.

Climbing is a worthy one. Let's see some articles on climbing in the Crossfit Journal!!

This was one of my first WODs a couple months ago, makes me nostalgic. Remember thinking, what have I gotten myself into?

#53 - single unders aren't even close to double unders, and I think the basic CF sub for doubleunders is something like tuck-jumps or other explosive jumping exercise. I have trouble with them too and try to jump rope as part of each warm up to get used to the rhythm and balance required and to see how many doubleunders I can do - not many right now.

50:30 -- bw 209.5 lbs (just checked this morning), hgt 6'4", age 31.

Started with 5 minutes jumping rope (skipped the CFWU today), then did everything as rx'd, except: the heaviest medicine ball my gym has is 10 lbs; no kettlebells, so used a 35lb dumbbell; and can't do double-unders yet, so subbed tuck-jumps instead.

But at least I finished! the last time this came up I think I only did about half the exercises.

Struggling as I was not in good shape when I started this 2.5 weeks ago, so trying to work into this without hurting something :-)

We dont have a medicine ball here so I'm gonna try pushups with a clap as a subsitute. Waiting on the other guys to get off right now. Thank you for this method of training. Reading the postings and doing the daily workouts have really helped to realize some good gains in fitness. Additionally, I have started eating a zone balance diet and I have really felt the benefits of this lifestyle.
In two weeks I will get my commission and hopefully begin a successful career in Navy SPECOPS. My question is this, what reasources or advice could some of the warriors kindly send my direction to best prepare for navy dive school and EOD bomb school? Thank you for your help. ~MIDN Muka

Hey-

Did double-unders and 24" box jumps yesterday in my version of "Strange Barbara."

Rest only for today as I prep for the US Nationals in KC next weekend. My lesson learned from the last competition is to allow more rest time in the week prior to comp and drill critical techniques. At 47 years, rest and recovery takes a wee bit longer.

I'm feeling great and have improved in each functional movement of the CF hopper.

What a great workout. If I would have eaten lunch prior to workout no chance of holding it in. With no rest and just as hard and as fast as I could with a time of 24:30. Its been about an hour since I finished and my body is still shaking. No Pain No Gain

First time for the Filthy 50, and I wanted to get a sub-25 minute time, but I was breathing too hard at times to go any faster. Finished off with a circuit class again: board push, mountain climbers, medicine ball PUs, lunges, lat pulls, backwards treadmill sprints, mountain climbers, calt raises, jump rope, DBDLs, ab roller, high knees, DB press, DB cleans, more abs, and some physio ball PUs. All X 2 rounds. 50 seconds each station, 10 seconds to switch.

Got some, went again.

Well one week in and this work out shows up. I watched my boyfriend do the Filthy Fifties in April and was tired and sore watching him do it!! I had to substitute a few things due to lack of upper body strength but gave it an honest effort ...

The Burpies killed me, I was humming along until the knees to elbows, and then caught some wind which wall-ball promptly knocked out of me only to face burpees. I was demoralized doing them in sets of 12/12/8/8/6/4. I have a speed rope so double unders seemed a cake walk after the Burpees.

Morning exercise was a 35 mile ride to work with a 20 minute time trial effort on a fixed gear. Heart rate of 190+ for 20 minutes.

Question: Since I have to do these workouts during my lunch hour (and am still not that good at them yet), for the longer ones like todays and Angie, etc. Is it better to modify the numbers ie. 50 down 25-30 and do all of the exercises or start at the beginning as Rx'ed and stop when time runs out? Kettlebell Swing (with big irregular stones!)

each station got 4x 20seconds max effort/10 seconds rest, then rotate, making an 18 minute smoke session. Not as bad actually as Tears, but still pretty fierce. You all don't mind if I pass on the Fifties today?

I might have been able to finish the burpees and double unders if I didn't have to rush out of the gym to take my son to school, but the 25 burpees I did do looked like I was falling down and picking myself up in state of exhaustion. The last time we did this WOD I could only do 20 reps of each exercise with (20# DB, -70lbs on gravitron, 2 KTE's, and a 10# medicine ball) in ~17 minutes. The next time we do this WOD I will finish it.

Kevin (#141): For me, personally, I would do 25 of each exercise, but do all the movements. That would go down in about 40% - 45% as much time as the full 50 reps. You may need to adjust accordingly.

I put my after hours football lifters to the challenge of the Filthy Fifties. They are all sophmores and juniors, we did the lift as RX'D except for the double unders as we didn't have the ropes tonite. So we did 150 single hops.

I broke, DNF...I am whipped. I was on a great pace (26 min through 20 wall balls) when I plain flat bonked. I could not get myself to pick up the ball. No burpees and no DU.

felt good, had good form on all reps and thought I would finish in the low 40:00s, but the stopwatch said otherwise.

I only had 30 minutes to squeeze this in- fit it in by limiting burpess to 25. Otherwise, as rx'd. I was dead at that point, so the other 25 would have taken 4 to 5 minutes.

:03 slower then my PR. I blame that on attending a command BBQ 2 hours prior, where I was forced to eat tri-tip and drink adult beverages. That and attacking this one in a new way. Instead of selling out, I broke everything into sets of 15,15,15,10 w/a 3 breath brake in between. Thought it might leave me some gas for the end... It didn't.

My knee is killing my now. Think I'll turn to the medicinal properties found in fermented hops and barley to aid in reducing the inflammation. Aaarrrggghhhh!!!

I see a lot of people making good strides in their times out there. Keep it up! You all are kicking some Arsssss!!!

20'52" - New PR by over 3 m inutes! Felt like crap going in to the gym but cranked out one of the best workouts in a long time. The burpees killed me slowly and the KTE's were getting sloppy, but I still surprised myself. I am fried now and I still have 10 hours of work ahead of me!! Gotta love it...

Ouch - working my way back but still have a bum elbow. Sub'ed as follows reps 20 instead of 50, box jump was step jump (appros 12 inches),lying ring pull ups (thought they would be easier on my elbow but I was wrong), 20 lb DB swing, Goodmornings w/ 20lb bar instead of back ext, thrusters with 2 - 20lb DB's instead of wallball.
Quit after burpees due to pukie.

Brutal. Poor sleep and stress didn't help. The L-pullups/KTE combos subbed for the jumping pullups and the KTEs, they went like this:
Do a full L-pullup, from the arms extended L position, bring your knees to your elbows, then return to the L position. That's 1. I know these added a lot of time to my workout.

I think this was the most brutal WOD so far (for me); all exercizes broken, and here are my modifications:

50 stair jump (13")
50 jumping pullups (tubing assist)
50 dumbell swings (24#)
50 steps walking lunge
50 "knees to elbows" (about 15 KtoE, rest as high as I could)
50 push press (2x14# dumbells)
50 back extensions
50 wall ball 20# (threw in air, not at wall)
50 burpees
50 double-unders (can't tell you how many singles it took to work in the d-u's)

I'm so gassed, it's the next day and it still hurts to move:)

MURDERERS...most sets broken and form on some was comical.
Had to sub wall balls with dumbells. Gym doesnt have any.
Doing Burpees near the end was brutal.
Took over an hour with lots of gasping between sets.
51 years old, about 225lbs and recovering from completely torn achilles tendon last Sept. (I will never ever play tennis again)
Crossfitter for 1 month and loving it.
Beats doing the same old weightlifting routine.
Now if I could only get used to those stares I keep getting from the others in the gym.

Had to use 45 lb bb thrusters for wall-ball. No GHD, so I use the smith machine, bar low with weights, and hang off of a bench for back extnsns.

About same time as previous, which is a little disappointing, but I'll live.

it's been awhile since i did this one. last time 46min or so, increased pp but most else the same; about 5-6min slower...

I like this workout.

I subbed walking lunges with a 1/4 mile run (lunges bother my knees.)

Took about 55 minutes to get through it but... I used a higher box than last time and I actually performed all 50 burbees.

Box jumps to std. wt. bench, sub 35# d/b for swings, back ext. split 50/50 on flat/angled, sub 15# med. ball wall balls, & 100 singles since I can't do double unders yet.

3 mins. faster than last time. Felt better throughout entire WOD, although I still hit the wall when I do burpees. My cardiovascular fitness is improving but is still far from where it can be.

This was my first crossfit workout back on 4/27/06. At that time, I could only do 25x rep sets and barely finished. This time wasn't competitive compared to you animals, but I certainly feel better, fitter, and stronger.

No double unders because I didn't have a jump rope, but that's ok because I was seeing stars after the burpees. I prayed a few times too, for a higher power to pull me through. Real kick in the pants....great workout!

Walking Lunge, 50 steps
50 Knees to elbows (Kind of jumping knees to elbows)
50 Push press, 45 pounds (20k)
50 Back extensions
50 Wall ball shots, 20 pound ball (20kg thrusters to bench)
50 Burpees (these killed and killed my time, all with jump)
50 Double unders (Was getting good at these but was too tired so did 100 singles with single legs alternating)

This was tough!

33 minutes - but didn't do double unders or a sub for them. Blew up doing the burpees and needed a get 10 minutes of gasping to start to recover.
