With Brendan's help, an ankle harness, rope, and pulley, Rob Miller performs an "elevator" on the rings. Starting from the inverted hang and with a false grip, curl the rings to the shoulder stand, then press to the handstand. This is a "C" move on the gymnast's scale where "A" is easiest and "E" hardest. (The muscle-up is an "A" move.)

Alternatively, the elevator can be developed without rings and standing by curling a pair of dumbbells, again with the false grip, and pressing them to overhead. When you can do this with dumbbells totalling your body weight you'll be close to ready on the rings.

I'm having trouble figuring out why exactly the "elevator" requires a false grip.

Comment #2 - Posted by: hooksy at May 25, 2006 6:37 PM

Rob- Bro I think after seeing those pics, we don't need to work on our hand shakes. Any hand shake you want to do from here on out is cool by any standards my Irish brother.

Get some, Go again!

Comment #3 - Posted by: DJ at May 25, 2006 6:44 PM

1) Rob's the man! (thanks for your help at the seminar!)

2) 'curl' was removed from my vocabulary 2 years when I started CF
*but since you need to curl half your bodyweight, with a false grip, I guess it is ok.

Thanks!

Comment #4 - Posted by: Murph at May 25, 2006 7:11 PM

#1 Joe

If you look at the position of the body throughout the movement you will notice that as with the Muscle-Up the hands must transition from pulling to pressing. If your hands are in a position straight down from the rings you will be unable to transition from below to above.

So False grip means your hands are already in a position above the rings, allowing you to transition from a hanging (pulling grip) to a palms down (pressing grip) because your hands (palms and wrists) are already there!

I hope that makes sense!

Comment #5 - Posted by: Pierre Auge at May 25, 2006 7:18 PM

Pierre,

No, that's not it.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Coach at May 25, 2006 7:27 PM

Yikes! Imagine how hard an "E" move must be. I'm thinking same as an "A" except you're set on fire while suspended over a pit of alligators. I'm still working on my L-sits.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Rob_M at May 25, 2006 7:41 PM

my guess would be that the false grip just shortens the lever of the forearm a bit.

Comment #8 - Posted by: gregEverett at May 25, 2006 7:45 PM

Here's a cool article that covers the false grip:

Comment #9 - Posted by: Redding Mark S at May 25, 2006 7:47 PM

wow, so I have to curl and overhead press 80lb dumbells...at a 160lb bodyweight. i can't imagine how long this will take..

Comment #10 - Posted by: Yong at May 25, 2006 7:56 PM

i agree with rob #7, i can't imagine an "e" move- still working on muscle ups one rock rings. there must be alligators involved in "e" class moves. where could one find video or images of these difficult moves? i used google to search for "gymnast scale a-e" and other variations but never came up with anything solid.

looking forward to this wod.

Comment #11 - Posted by: THomas at May 25, 2006 8:00 PM

Greg,

You've got it. Think false-grip, think chimp-strength.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Coach at May 25, 2006 8:13 PM

are we supposed to be doing the official crossfit warmup before each of the WOD's? the warmup are freakin intense. or is it just me? its a workout in itself.

Comment #13 - Posted by: andy at May 25, 2006 8:14 PM

...isn't the false grip when you hold tight, palm down, index finger forward, click on greg, annie or josh busting out a sub 3 minute fran, and think "i could probably do that"

Comment #14 - Posted by: RandyG at May 25, 2006 8:15 PM

quick question, my friend and i are starting a zone diet on monday, and it asks for your activity level i was just wondering what the activity level would be for a crossfitter that also does a good amount of extra training about an hour 4 times a week(him), and someone who just does crossfit (me)

thanks

Check out the message board, TONS of info on the zone.

Good luck!

Comment #21 - Posted by: Murph at May 25, 2006 9:53 PM

nice bit of thinking, Greg E. I have simply come to accept that the false grip is the mandatory "bridge" in which to enter the world of pushing from the (... & my more familiar!) world of pulling.

Murph -thanks. You rocked at the cert. Funny that there seems to be a legitimate curl in our vernacular now, eh? Highly specialized, but I'm very excited about applying that sort of inverted ring control (someday w/out Brendan's help!!) to the simpler ( & upright!) movements as a climber on the rock.

You too, DJ! GET SOME! Lookin' forward to the next handshake, my Irish brother!

Walks/hobble-runs on a treadmill.
I was going to bust out a couple of sets of 20 or so elevators but my gym only has dumbells that go up to 100. I was thinking about using those but figured that would be too easy so I'll just have to wait until they get some 115's in.

Is rest between rounds included in the times for this one? Is it always/never? If the answer is "it varies," is there a general code for when rounds are meant to be done back to back? I have read the FAQ, but I'm still a little confused... sorry!

This is my first post but I've been lurking and doing the workouts infrequently for a while. Time to commit and get consistent! Thanks for posting all this info, and the workouts. Cheers.

WOD- 12:54

Question: I practiced the elevator with DB's today (230 bwt: 50x3, 60x2, 70x2, 75x2, 75x1). I noticed it was natural to use my back/legs to curl/press. Is that okay when practicing this lift? It doesn't seem that you could use your legs at all in the real situation of gripping rings. Also, is practicing with DBs equivalent to your bodyweight a good predictor of success with this lift? It seems that the pulley system (see picture) would mean you are doing substantially less than your bodyweight.

Attempted the 1000m row under 3:30 today... at 3:30 was 95m short.

Ended up doing 2 miles on the rower for a quick workout.

CFWUx3, dips @ 4 reps w/o assistance to full depth

Four rounds for time of:
Run 400 meters
50 Squats

Total time = 23:02

Notes: Still working on transitioning to POSE Method of Running, so runs were on treadmill at 6 mph. After 2 sessions, I've come to the conclusion that POSE running on a treadmill is not the easiest way to make the transition from heel-striking. Next WOD's with running will be done outside in the gym parking lot or on a track.

Four rounds for time of:
***C2 500m row (1:55.9/1:57.1/1:57.2/1:56.9 drag=120)
50 Squats
TOTAL TIME=15:36 (3:45/4:05/4:01/3:44)

Perhaps understandably, the squats were a bit slower today despite not even going all out on the rows.

Tried hanging to stretch, can't even hang for 2 sec from my left hand (normal is 10-15 sec). Right hand hanging is still normal.
Going back in for medical eval, this has "not right" written all over it.
Hope to be back soon.

Then did WOD at park near my house. Total run time was 6:38 for the four laps - I was using my Garmin, so it auto-paused when I did the squats. Probably 10-11 minutes all told. Quads felt like rubber afterward. However, not as exhausting as Coach recommends. In C.F. Journal Jan 2003 he states, "Done right, they (WODs) have a horrific impact: they're designed that way. No one comes out standing much less looking for another one later."

I found this WOD pretty easy and wonder how I screwed it up. I was still standing afterward.

BTW just since it's being talked about. There are F skills now. The open ended code of points is being used at the elite level now. A-F. When we're talking E/F skills we're talking about pressing out of a maltese, performing a victorian, performing a wide arm press to inverted cross. Yes, it's insane.
