With Brendan's help, an ankle harness, rope, and pulley, Rob Miller performs an "elevator" on the rings. Starting from the inverted hang and with a false grip, curl the rings to the shoulder stand, then press to the handstand. This is a "C" move on the gymnast's scale where "A" is easiest and "E" hardest. (The muscle-up is an "A" move.)
Alternatively, the elevator can be developed without rings and standing by curling a pair of dumbbells, again with the false grip, and pressing them to overhead. When you can do this with dumbbells totalling your body weight you'll be close to ready on the rings.
Posted by lauren at May 26, 2006 5:06 PM
I'm having trouble figuring out why exactly the "elevator" requires a false grip.
east coaster here loving the early post
Rob- Bro I think after seeing those pics, we don't need to work on our hand shakes. Any hand shake you want to do from here on out is cool by any standards my Irish brother.
Get some, Go again!
1) Rob's the man! (thanks for your help at the seminar!)
2) 'curl' was removed from my vocabulary 2 years when I started CF
*but since you need to curl half your bodyweight, with a false grip, I guess it is ok.
Thanks!
#1 Joe
If you look at the position of the body throughout the movement you will notice that as with the Muscle-Up the hands must transition from pulling to pressing. If your hands are in a position straight down from the rings you will be unable to transition from below to above.
So False grip means your hands are already in a position above the rings, allowing you to transition from a hanging (pulling grip) to a palms down (pressing grip) because your hands (palms and wrists) are already there!
I hope that makes sense!
Pierre,
No, that's not it.
Yikes! Imagine how hard an "E" move must be. I'm thinking same as an "A" except you're set on fire while suspended over a pit of alligators. I'm still working on my L-sits.
my guess would be that the false grip just shortens the lever of the forearm a bit.
wow, so I have to curl and overhead press 80lb dumbells...at a 160lb bodyweight. i can't imagine how long this will take..
i agree with rob #7, i can't imagine an "e" move- still working on muscle ups one rock rings. there must be alligators involved in "e" class moves. where could one find video or images of these difficult moves? i used google to search for "gymnast scale a-e" and other variations but never came up with anything solid.
looking forward to this wod.
Greg,
You've got it. Think false-grip, think chimp-strength.
are we supposed to be doing the official crossfit warmup before each of the WOD's? the warmup are freakin intense. or is it just me? its a workout in itself.
...isn't the false grip when you hold tight, palm down, index finger forward, click on greg, annie or josh busting out a sub 3 minute fran, and think "i could probably do that"
Check out drillsandskills.com. The moves are rated there. The planche and maltese are are sick.
Oooh, a quickie!! Now I need something to complement this one.
quick question, my friend and i are starting a zone diet on monday, and it asks for your activity level i was just wondering what the activity level would be for a crossfitter that also does a good amount of extra training about an hour 4 times a week(him), and someone who just does crossfit (me)
thanks
This was our first WOD, only it was on this day Wednesday 051123

Most people start with .7 multiplier
Can someone recommend a good website to get started on the zone diet as far as caculations and blocks...tx....does every one here swear by the diet or what?
#20 jdawg
Check out the message board, TONS of info on the zone.
Good luck!
nice bit of thinking, Greg E. I have simply come to accept that the false grip is the mandatory "bridge" in which to enter the world of pushing from the (... & my more familiar!) world of pulling.
Murph -thanks. You rocked at the cert. Funny that there seems to be a legitimate curl in our vernacular now, eh? Highly specialized, but I'm very excited about applying that sort of inverted ring control (someday w/out Brendan's help!!) to the simpler ( & upright!) movements as a climber on the rock.
You too, DJ! GET SOME! Lookin' forward to the next handshake, my Irish brother!

18:58. Quarter-miles instead of 400 meters. First was 90 secs. and last was 112 secs. Squats killed me.
13:15. Sub'd rowing for running but I think even that is hurting my hip.

If any one questioned the importance of squats for running, your question was just answered.
13:08. 400M is approximate distance for runs.
26:00
Walks/hobble-runs on a treadmill.
I was going to bust out a couple of sets of 20 or so elevators but my gym only has dumbells that go up to 100. I was thinking about using those but figured that would be too easy so I'll just have to wait until they get some 115's in.
14.20 with runs on treadmill
9.35 Stormed this one .I like this type of workout as I used to do track and run a reasonable 400m...however the squats make a difference!Averaged about 75-78 secs on the 400ms.
Haven't done the WOD yet but I was just thinking.
15 May was my 6 month point with crossfit.
Today I had a PR Squat (235#) and a PR Bench(also 235#).
Maybe this stuff actually works.
Did yesterday's WOD first, took 5 min rest to recover
13:26 as rx'd; squats broken at 25/15/10, then 5x10 for remaining rounds
Running after the squats was just cruel and unusual - legs were so spent I couldn't even get HR past 160
going to Vegas today! oh yeah! gotta keep the mind busy, so it's not thinking about what's going down. so did a quick workout this morning...

Those "elevators" look very cool. Good excuse to do some dumbbell curls...in the squat rack of course.
sol, #72, 400m is 1/4 mile.
Is rest between rounds included in the times for this one? Is it always/never? If the answer is "it varies," is there a general code for when rounds are meant to be done back to back? I have read the FAQ, but I'm still a little confused... sorry!
This is my first post but I've been lurking and doing the workouts infrequently for a while. Time to commit and get consistent! Thanks for posting all this info, and the workouts. Cheers.
Misremembered number of rounds and so only did three today. Work time was 8:29 for 3 rounds, this doesn't include rest.

Hi all,
For fun
Walk 6480' (w/25# DB's). Duration 19:00.
Squats and pull-ups later...
WOD- 12:54
Question: I practiced the elevator with DB's today (230 bwt: 50x3, 60x2, 70x2, 75x2, 75x1). I noticed it was natural to use my back/legs to curl/press. Is that okay when practicing this lift? It doesn't seem that you could use your legs at all in the real situation of gripping rings. Also, is practicing with DBs equivalent to your bodyweight a good predictor of success with this lift? It seems that the pulley system (see picture) would mean you are doing substantially less than your bodyweight.

as RX'd, but needed 90 sec. break between rounds 2 and 3 and broke squats into reps of 30-20.
15:30
14:18 as rx'ed. All runs on a treadmill @ 1%. After the first set, the runs reminded me of bike run transitions from my tri days. All in all, a good WOD for me, just gas 'er up and go! Thanks again, Coach.

Subbed 200 24" box steps + 50 situps for WOD due to sprained ankle and because I'm feeling kind of lazy on my day off. I tried the run, but my ankle was simply too sore to want to continue running. Completed the steps in 9:40, stopping the clock for 10-15 seconds each set of 25.
added 180 straight punches after squats for a little "Crosspit" action.

Four rounds for time of:
Run 400 meters
50 Squats
Total time = 23:02
Notes: Still working on transitioning to POSE Method of Running, so runs were on treadmill at 6 mph. After 2 sessions, I've come to the conclusion that POSE running on a treadmill is not the easiest way to make the transition from heel-striking. Next WOD's with running will be done outside in the gym parking lot or on a track.

1 round. Running hurts my neck. Every bloody thing hurts my neck.
Tried hanging to stretch, can't even hang for 2 sec from my left hand (normal is 10-15 sec). Right hand hanging is still normal.
Going back in for medical eval, this has "not right" written all over it.

Quads felt like rubber afterward. However, not as exhausting as Coach recommends. In C.F. Journal Jan 2003 he states, "Done right, they (WODs) have a horrific impact: they're designed that way. No one comes out standing much less looking for another one later."
I found this WOD pretty easy and wonder how I screwed it up. I was still standing afterward.

As "the girlfriend" in post #181 ... I have been watching him do this for about 5 months now. Thought that it was about time I gave it a try ... afraid that I am not going to be able to move in the morning!
those are great times coutney, especially for your first WOD and especially for doubling up.

Actually ran this one. Knee felt good until the last set of squats. Felt like I should of done better, but stoked to run a WOD again. Squats were to parallel or deeper.
Modified to four rounds of:
500m row
30 squats, to parallel or slightly below
Time: 23:12
5:09/5:47/7:03/5:13
Not sure what happened in the third round... felt like I just ran out of steam at the end of the row. Picked it back up for the last round...

BTW just since it's being talked about. There are F skills now. The open ended code of points is being used at the elite level now. A-F. When we're talking E/F skills we're talking about pressing out of a maltese, performing a victorian, performing a wide arm press to inverted cross. Yes, it's insane.

6 rounds
1:50 - 1:55 runs
Squats in about 1:00 each
5th round complete at 14:52. Did an extra one just for the heck of it. Last round did 200 squats (50 + 150 more).
Right shoulder completely out of commission, no pressing movements for 6 weeks. This is not going to be fun.
