I liken this workout to a 1200m all out sprint, and it takes about as long too.

Comment #3 - Posted by: mr. white at May 16, 2006 8:51 PM

can someone suggest an alternative to pull ups, still can't do them yet. No assisted pull up machine available.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Dustan at May 16, 2006 8:51 PM

#4 Dustan -

Jumping pullups are great. Jump to the top and lower yourself down as slowly as you can.

The jumping keeps the pace hard and the slow lowering builds your strength for the move.

Pullup callous trouble. After Angie's 100 pullups on Monday, developed some hearty blisters and ripping callouses on fingers. So Fran's RX is making me nervous. Beyond callous filing and skin snipping, does anyone have a recommendation for holding the bar to lessen callous formation?

Comment #8 - Posted by: george at May 16, 2006 9:17 PM

I checked the link to the previous Fran workout...Damn I miss that dog....Gonna hammer out Fran for Stazzo tomorrow.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Ian Carver at May 16, 2006 9:28 PM

4:27 - 65# bb thrusters to 20# D-ball, complete elbow lockout overhead each rep. Kipping pullups.

Thank you Nicole, Greg, Lauren and Annie for pointing out my less than ideal overhead lockout during thrusters....I'm working on fixing that!

try doing body rows instead of pullups.
find a bar that is about thigh/hip high, ie on a smith machine, lay supine under bar, keep body straight and pull. alternatively could use thigh high rings attached to pull up bar or joists.

Comment #11 - Posted by: george at May 16, 2006 9:36 PM

George-

Tips to decrease callous formation and the inevitable tears:

1. Go easy on the chalk.
2. Don't use a taped bar.
3. Manage callouses with a razor blade or scalpel (go slow) if the emory board isn't doing the trick.
4. If tears do happen and you want to keep training, tape your hands up with liberal padding over the wound. Fingertip and/or dead-hang pullups cause far less friction, if you feel the skin start to go consider transitioning to them. Also, don't be afraid to switch your grips up to put stress on a different part of the hand.
5. Keep in mind that if you do so many pullups that you rip your skin off, you may have earned a few days free of pullups. They aren't going anywhere.

Hope this helps.

-D.

I've gotten fond of fine grit sandpaper as a way to smooth and shape callouses! Looks funny, works very well.

Thanks for the callous advice. I left some of myself on the bar after the last two workouts.

Comment #15 - Posted by: A.M. at May 16, 2006 11:02 PM

I had staff duty on the rest day so I made up for not doing today's workout by doing a different WOD. I did the May 22 2005 workout.

Three sets of:
Run 800m (~1/2 mile)-had to do on a treadmill, 1st set, about 3min, 2nd set, about 3:25, 3rd, 3:55

Overhead squats, 95lbs, 21 reps: This is my first time with overhead squats, and they are harder than they look, as with everything else CrossFit. I need to work on the form but they put a hurtin on me. I did get 21 reps each time, and my form actually got better the more I did.

L-Pull Ups, 30 reps: Did broken sets of 10 and fifteen. Need to work on my form, but I did get 30 each time.

Total time, 32:34, including moving between areas, as the gym on post here has everything in different spots. Had to sit down and breathe for about 10 minutes afterward. I will sleep like a baby tomorrow.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Ian at May 16, 2006 11:04 PM

Didn't feel to bad after Monday - but then found out I was doing it wrong! Today was not pleasant, I have to say. Reduced the weight to 50% - but will go heavier next time. Pull ups will be troublesome for a couple of months I guess, till I get used to doing them - managed 12, 9, 8

Comment #19 - Posted by: Nick K at May 16, 2006 11:54 PM

People are going to say I'm nuts but, hey, it works like a miracle...I use super-glue on my cuts and blisters, and it works really well. Not that liquid bandage stuff--it's not the same--i've tried it. Super Glue.

A long time ago I read an interview with Stevie Ray Vaughn and he said that he used it to treat his fingers when he ripped off his callouses. I've been using it ever since.

It works great on paper cuts and other annoying little cuts.

They've now come out with super glue with a brush and i find that this works the best--you don't have to get it all over your other fingers.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Tristram at May 17, 2006 12:22 AM

Tristram,

some interesting info:
http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/msuperglue.html

Superglue(2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate, AKA Dermabond) is used in hospitals in lieu of sutures or staples in some situations.

Similar to Krazyglue(methyl-cyanoacrylate).

Apparently the Band-Aid liquid bandage is watered down somehow, to make it "safer," and less sticky.

A guide to Dermabond: http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000301/1383.html

Fran later, still at work.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Andy Shirley at May 17, 2006 1:13 AM

For calusus, try using a thumbless grip and no chalk. Rely on finger strength instead of friction to hold you to the bar.

Not doing the WOD today... After the 100's, BJJ and Cleans, I don't think I could do a pull up with out screaming. Will substitute with a 5K and light weights.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Eric at May 17, 2006 1:45 AM

Thats weird! I did Fran yesterday ( i work off a different Program to the WOD ). It was sweet, knocked 1min 23 seconds off my PR time!

It's still taking me 9 mins 37 seconds to do, but that is a good improvement in the space of a month i feel, down from 11 mins!!!

Comment #27 - Posted by: Aaron at May 17, 2006 3:35 AM

Seems to me gloves will protect against callouses. I learned this lesson in the Air Force. They stressed using gloves lifting stretchers as a safety issue. When you're injured you cannot train as hard as when you're whole. Doing pullups is not surgery, You do not need a fine feel for a bar. And,if it keeps you in the game, it seems a small price to pay (less tactile appreciation of the bar) rather than struggling with a raw palm and having to wait weeks for the skin to heel.

every since my days as a boy scout i have used rubber glue on cuts, tears, and abrassions.

but i have a question regarding kelly's post #10. are we supposed to lock out the on the thruster? i thought you always wanted to avoid locking the joints since it could lead to injury.

looking forward to fran. also should we use db or bar for this?

Comment #41 - Posted by: THomas at May 17, 2006 5:20 AM

for Dustin. We have been experimenting with bands ie thrabands to help with pull ups they seem to work well strict, kipping, bands, jumping should be the order i stick with that.

As per callouses, I just say to hell with em. I have had them ever since i started working out in high school. For cuts and such, my wife is a nurse and she said they use dermabond. I cut my finger to the bone one day at work and instead of reporting it and going to the hospital, I said superglue will work. No scaring either. Also, superglue is sterile.

For thrusters whatever grip you do push press, push/ split jerk width. I typically push press with the width grip that I do cleans or deadlifts with.

Comment #64 - Posted by: Allen Y at May 17, 2006 7:41 AM

on callouses and blisters: if the blister pops and there's still a flap of skin, fill it with a generous amount of neosporin and bandaid it before going to bed. It'll heal a lot faster. If It bursts and you don't stop what you're doing so the flpa wears off, or you just are so motivated you keep working out until you have raw popped blisters that look like hamburger go to a CVS or like chain and buy a product called NUskin or SecondSkin. Its for burns, you apply this little pad directly to the wound again right before bed and let it dry overnight, it dramatically speeds the healing process, making the raw skin ready to be your outer skin layer. I swear by the stuff.

Tony,

Yes, you want your elbows high. A thruster is a "front squat" plus a press. Keeping your elbows high lets you rack the bar and "rest : ) " between reps.
If you keep your elbows low the bar will most likely sit a few inches away from your chest. This may pull you forward, tire you out more quickly and will most likely load your toes as opposed to your heels. Bad for your knees and bad for power.

My 2 cents.

I got 2 other buddies working with me now. They had to go down to about 65lb thrusters and assisted pullups.

Im surprised with them though, instead of being discouraged by the pull-ups they keep asking me when they'll be able to do non assisted.

R2: 0:57, 0:35; total: 1:32

Rounds broken as follows:
R1: 21, 21
R2: 10-5, 10-5
R3: 6-3, 4-3-2

Previous best was 3:45 so down by 0:13. Not terribly happy. Hoped for a new PR.

Legs weak point on thrusters. Muscle stamina just not there.

Grip definitely weak point on pull-ups. Probably ould have had them all unbroken if grip had held up.

Thrusters cleaned from ground to start.

Alternated palms facing and palms away on pull-ups.

Question for all the smart people here. I just was informed that I’ve been drafted for a 'make your own boat' race this Saturday. The price limit is for materials is fifty dollars and the boat must be put together the day of the race. The building/race will be by two person teams. I was thinking along the lines of a few car tire sized inner tubes lashed together with a piece of plywood on top. The problem is locating the tubes, they aren’t as common as they used to be. Any one here have any creative (i.e. cheap) ideas for a boat? Or, if you’ve done one of these races, what doesn’t work?

Feel free to e-mail me at nwhiteman@sao10.com

Thanks.

My wrist couldnt handle the weight so I went to 66lbs. on the last set. Haven't done thrusters a lot, and I do them alone so there is no one to examine my form.

Started to do this in the AM and suddenly got a blistering headache in the middle of thrusters (after 21) - got on pullup station (some a-hole doing curls right under the pullup bar) and proceeded to smash my damn head on the crossbrace. Did 9 more thrusters and head was going to explode -- had to stop. Am going to rest/recup and try this in the PM.

Burgener WU plus sits/good mornings. Also used that grip tight stuff that came with Tyler's rings and it's not bad. The rings, of course, are EXCELLENT!!

#168 Colleen - Tennis elbow for me meant 400-600mg of ibuprofen 3x daily for close to 2 weeks, but no help. I ultimately got rid of it by getting a cortisone injection right where it hurt. The pain immediately goes away, but the cortisone caused some temporary skin atrophy (pink blotches for ~2 weeks). I'm a keyboard jockey, not a doctor. Good luck.

Thrusters: 20lbs on EZ-curl barbell (all I had access to)
Pullups devolved into jumping PUs after first 12 or so.

Went very light for the thrusters so as to not hurt myself. Could've gone a little harder but not much. Next time: Oly barbell with 10s.

Danny. You need to push the bar so its directly above your head at least, not in front. If you can't you may need to work on shoulder flexibilty or lighten the load slightly for better form.Check out the video on it in the exercise section.

About a minute slower than my PR, but these were the best thrusters I've done: deep and good overhead extension. Pull-ups were tough because the 2x4 doorframe causes grip slip.

Followed with 5 x 2 minute tabata heavy bag rounds. Every other 10 second rest was burpees (no rest). 1 Minute rest between rounds.

by definition, as a benchmark workout, it would seem logical that fran is a measure of progress, like all "the girls". if general physical preparedness/increased overall fitness/sport specific improvement/improved quality of life are the desired results, very curious on people's thoughts of whether improvement in times of "the girls" are in fact indicative of improvements in the aforementioned metrics as well???

A painful way to start! My first day on crossfit and I was smoked! Pull-up bar at my gym (at work) is inches away from the wall, so no kipping pull ups. Struggled mightily on the pull ups - did ok on the thrusters but overall performance was low enough to not warrant timing. I'm liking this pain already!

I recommend no gloves. I describe crossfit to the uninitiated as a program that makes you fit (i.e. prepared) for whatever life might throw at you in a physical sense. Accordingly, unless you wear gloves as a matter of course, train bare-handed. That goes for straps, belts, wraps, etc. as well. Besides, chicks dig scars. Right, Mr. Norris?

Pullups, except first five, were actually negatives...I couldn't even hack assisted or jumping after Angie.

Thrusters were with dumbbells 24# total-could have used more weight but didn't have any other setup than that, or 44#, which seemed too hard. I need a bar. Awesome workout, and I can only imagine that as I am able to do pullups and use heavier weights, my time will increase for a while before I can get it down again:)

Did Fran today, Thursday, then went for a 1 1/2 ride on the coast in North County San Diego.
I have a few questions though:
Should I use a lighter weight on on the Thrusters? I had to break the sets up, very short break. Is it better to be able to do the whole set without stopping?
Doing lots of negative pull ups! I know that I will get there some day!! At 6'4", 200lbs, that is a long way to pull!!!
