It's funny how a rest day feels like when you got grounded as a kid

Comment #1 - Posted by: Allan at May 15, 2006 9:11 PM

yea i know i think we have to many rest days and i feel like i have to punish myself. I need the WOD to feel good about myself it rechanges me. please give me w work out please.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Laramee at May 15, 2006 9:19 PM

The supply side miracle is the huge budget deficit with China buying our bonds to devalue their currency. That leads to a prosperous Chinese economy as they pump cheap exports into our country and creates demand for oil. Cheap chinese goods but we pay through the nose for gas now.

Thanks Reagan for your wonderful economic model!!

Great picture! Sorry I couldn't be there, but I had a great day at Rainier CrossFit on Saturday.

Looks like over 130 people in the picture! I'm sure everybody had a great time, learned alot, saw old friends and made new ones.

Congrats to Greg, Lauren and the CFHQ Staff for another great cert!

You do realize that the Washington times is a rag owned by a politico that artificially inflates it circulation numbers in order to appear more relevant than the neocon family newsletter that it is, right?

Taking its op/ed section seriously is like reading the weekly world news as a science journal.

If you're going to bother mixing politics with an exercise blog, at least use a better source.

Comment #9 - Posted by: some guy at May 15, 2006 10:06 PM

Sad that anybody believes this supply side stuff. Very scary stuff. Complete BS. The reason that the deficit and debt are at record highs, there the government cannot provide services that it is supposed to.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Brian Sullivan at May 15, 2006 10:12 PM

welcome to rest day; off go the gloves, out come the know-it-alls. This is better than watching that guy you knew was a turd quit on Sunday before you even hit the surf.

Thanks again to everyone at HQ for another great cert. Coach and Lauren and all the hard working regulars make it an awesome experience. We had a fantastic time and the best part was being there with the wife. Coach watching when I finally hit my first Muscle Up was a kick in the ass too. Thanks Tony D.!

Comment #12 - Posted by: steve hb at May 15, 2006 10:26 PM

Some boys at Cato may have finally put the last nails in the joyous episode (ha!) that was supply-side Reagonomics. Turns out that a little work with the numbers and a bit of time in behavioral econ labs seem to suggest that tax cuts that put gathered revenues beneath a certain equilibrium level (17% of GDP) makes the apparent cost of government go down, since less money is acually being gathered for the same government, and thus it appears that government is being offered at a rebate. Thus, suprise, legislators buy more of it, which is of course paid for in reality by debt held by the American public, which thus has less cash to stimulate growth. Hence, spending cuts and higher taxes under Clinton and George the Elder caused economic growth and government shrinkage, while Reagan and GW pursued the opposing policy, with predicatbly opposed results.

Not that tax and spend is the way to live, beyond a point (17 percent anyone) it becomes repressive, but it seems to breed better results than "don't tax and thus spend more!"

Comment #13 - Posted by: Kalen M. at May 15, 2006 10:47 PM

#10 Supply side is very scary? No, a government which believes it can spend my money more appropriately than I can is scary.

CrossPit workout @ Brand X:

Pack:
4 rounds
21 x push press - pack women's weight 15# dbs (Pack Men and Big dogs Women 25#)
28 x box jumps/stepups 20" box
93 hard straight punches (Big dogs 136 punches)

Also skill work with double-leg take downs and hook. This Crosspit Class is one of the hardest training classes I have had.

Absolutely Awesome! Jason is doing a great job.

Steve (Comment #12)

Totally agree with you...what a great weekend!! CONGRATS on the muscle up, you couldn't have picked a better time, place or group of people to do it around. It was a pleasure to have met you and "the wife". You both are part of the reason we consider ourselves blessed to be a part of this community. We owe you dinner.....and we will be up soon to visit!

Comment #19 - Posted by: Eddie & Lisa Lugo at May 15, 2006 11:28 PM

Man, theres a lot of people at the Cert. Hope everyone learnt something new!

Comment #20 - Posted by: Gareth H at May 16, 2006 3:51 AM

wow, I want to say that i am so completely impressed with Crossfit, ya the WOD's are great of course, weve all said that, but I just cant believe how its brought so many people together in such a positive atmosephere. Unfortunately in todays world I find that positive energy is alot more difficult to come by, but in the crossfit comunity it seems abundant. When I see the positive support coments to one another on the site, people helping people, it makes me also feel that positivity and thats something I bring out on the road with me as a paramedic. So allthough all of this may have sounded a bit "wonky", to everyone who took the time to read this, have an awesome day, get some...and go again.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Monty at May 16, 2006 4:03 AM

Wow - what an amazing group of people! It was an awesome weekend. Thanks to Coach, Lauren, and all the trainers that made it possible!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Murph at May 16, 2006 5:02 AM

In the 1980's the U.S. ran up a major deficit because of a new Saving and Loan law passed increasing the savings account guarantee of the government from $10,000 to $100,000. Loan companies quickly extended the extra credit and the country's dept increased by almost 1/2 TRILLION dollars!!! At that time it was forecast that "our children will be paying this dept" or "We'll have to raise taxes to pay for it." In the Late 1990's we, our children, had a supplus. What did "our children" do with that money? Did they pay off the debt from 15 years earlier? No. Will "our children" EVER pay it or any of the of the debt? Past history suggests we (our children) never will.

It seems to me the real question is the debt-holder's response to the U.S debt. Increasing, it is less important what the U.S. does with taxes, but what Japan, China, Saudia Arabia and other creditors countries decide for the U.S.

Right now those countries do dictate U.S. monetary policies to the degree that they demand higher interests rates for the money they lend us. If we did not have the high debt and deficit they could not do that to the U.S. Those who approve the tax breaks and deficit spending are also supporting high interest rates.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Ken_Davis at May 16, 2006 5:42 AM

There's a reason most economists are conservative. Everyone should at least read a few books on the subject such as "Capitalism and Freedom" by Milton Friedman and "The Road to Serfdom" by F.A. Hayek.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Mark G. at May 16, 2006 5:50 AM

Sorry, in #24, make that "conservative/libertarian."

Comment #25 - Posted by: Mark G. at May 16, 2006 6:00 AM

In other news - check out the front page of www.nytimes.com for an interesting article on lactic acid metabolization. Seems a good summary of the more complex article that was posted here a couple of weeks ago - the last paragraph seems pure Crossfit (essentially, that coaches have known for years what scientists haven't).

Comment #26 - Posted by: Tommy A. at May 16, 2006 7:04 AM

Just a reminder. Jackasses who don't post a real email or username automatically have their comments disallowed. Also, having posted a few WOD scores wouldn't hurt your credibility.

Comment #28 - Posted by: nathan at May 16, 2006 7:29 AM

Mark #24-5,

"Most economists are conservative/libertarian." Is that really true? On what evidence are you basing that? And do you mean fiscally so, or overall?

Comment #29 - Posted by: Brooke at May 16, 2006 7:55 AM

Fantastic time at at the cert. So many great people in one place made this past weekend one to remember. The trainers are top notch. Thanks to the Glassmans. Also thanks to Annie & Nicole for the very impressive job coordinating all the groups.

Stupid question.. what does "rx'd" mean?

Comment #32 - Posted by: No Doubt at May 16, 2006 8:06 AM

Wow, the cert looks and sounds like it was great. Hopefully I can make one someday!

I'm assuming this article isn't meant to be a joke, but I'm having trouble taking it seriously. I probably support many of the same measures Mr. Tyrrell does, but this is a poorly-written piece that relies on laughable accounting.

Also, Mark (#24 and 25), I'm not sure that "most economists are conservative/libertarian" and also wonder what the "reason" you refer to might be. I agree that both the works you cite are must-reads by great thinkers. But there are lots of economists who don't agree with them.

And "No Doubt"--rx'ed means "as prescribed", meaning you did the WOD exactly as it was posted, without changing anything.

Comment #33 - Posted by: bcf at May 16, 2006 8:28 AM

If those statistics are correct it appears there is more money than ever before!

However, Government expansion and spending are at all time highs, thus we have a deficit. Lower the overhead and stop the spending and the tax cuts will show a positive result.

The U.S. is bleeding heavily and raising taxes won't solve the problem....

Comment #34 - Posted by: Phil Sarris at May 16, 2006 8:43 AM

remember that we are still in wartime, even though nobody feels the effects like they used to in the past.

our nominal deficit may be at an all time high, but our real deficit is still below that of the WWII period.

Just a word on taxes:
The top 1% of taxpayers by income pay 33% of all individual income taxes, and 22.7% of all federal taxes.
The top 5% of taxpayers pay 54.5% of all individual income taxes, and 38.5% of all federal taxes.
The top 10% of taxpayers pay 67.4% of all individual income taxes, and 50% of all federal taxes.
The top quintile (20%) pays 82.5% of all individual income taxes, and 65.3% of all federal taxes.

Top 10% earn 245K avg income per year
Top 5% earn 351K
Top 1% earn 938K

Tax revenue is at a high levelbut spending is much higher. The federal and state governments spend like druken sailors! There is no difference between Democrats and Republicans any more.

Where'd you get that, schapm #27? All kinds of jackasses who don't provide bona fides post comments each and every day. I'll give you the point on the credibility though.

I can understand why one's WOD scores might add some weight to one's comments about exercise- or fitness-related topics, but exactly why would they add credibility to one's opinion of supply side economics?

It is instructive to review the German economic miracle of the 1950's when West Germany cut taxes and had enormous real economic growth due to money put into the economy by private sector investors, while East Germany under communism did the opposite and had the opposite result.

#41 Lewis

Posting WOD times does not, in and of itself, confer any special credibility with regard to any particular topic. However, posting your WOD results establishes your "credibility" as a member of this community, a community which is at its core still a fitness community. There don't appear to be any rules, per se. It's a "feel thing"; it just seems to feel better reading a strongly held opinion (agreeing or disagreeing) from someone who posts 3 WOD results for every rest day post.

I'm fairly new here (1/1/06) and may some day offer some thoughts as I exercise my "brain muscle" on rest days. But for now I'll simply post my WOD and add to my "credibility bank" here in the community.

Just my respectful .02...

Darrell

In response to #29 and #33,
Yes, I meant fiscally.
I probably let some hyperbole slip in, but I do believe what I wrote is true. Virtually all of the _cogent_ arguments I've read about economics and economic policy have supported fiscal conservatism. Maybe I've just avoided the good liberal texts out there and haven't realized it. I'd love for people to recommend some that are worth reading. The Communist Manifesto doesn't count (sorry, I couldn't resist).

Actually, "rx'd" means "prescribed."

When you do a workout "as rx'd," it means "as prescribed" (i.e. no modifications to weight, time, rep scheme, exercise, etc.)

Tax dollars in America are so wasted it's ridiculous. I just got word on How much a A certain Mayor of a certain major city is spending to have his office upgraded. Over $300.00 per yard for his fabric. HIs sofa is gonna be somewhere in the $5-7000 dollar range, this is just one city, one office. Ridiculous. That's just the sofa and fabric, I'll give you the total bill later. Call me crazy, I wouldn't mind paying taxes in the least if i saw some real improvements.. If you've been to Sweden then you know why taxes are good.

Comment #55 - Posted by: NickC at May 16, 2006 12:37 PM

Kalen, #13

Where did you find the study you referenced? I'd be interested in reading it. Everything I found from CATO concerning supply-side dated after about 1982 was highly favorable. Also, gathered revenue is up, not down. The facts of gathered revenue aside, IMO legislators' impressions of governmental bargains and their subsequent behaviors do not truly reflect the efficacy of economic policy. To be frank, I don't believe that, Republican or Democrat, their impressions of governmental bargains matter at all. I think they'll just keep spending as much as they think they can get away with until the taxpayer makes them stop.

bcf, #33
"this is a poorly-written piece that relies on laughable accounting."
Can you be more specific? The U.S. Treasury has in fact reported record tax receipts. Are you saying that tax receipts are not an important indicator?

Great job everyone!

#57 Greg - I'm in about my third week of Crossfit, and when I first saw the comments on the rest day I really wondered if I wanted to be a part of this group. I read comments from/about the following:
racist/religious-freaks/You're-a-liberal/No-I'm-not/Ford-sucks/Chevy-rules/etc.
I almost took a pass on crossfit, but I've decided to simply ignore the wacked out views that some of the folks here have, and take advantage of the great parts I find here. I've found that most of the stuff that almost drove me away is confined to the rest days, so if it really bothers you, just don't read the comments on the rest days.

For those in the "this is a fitness site" camp who come on rest days and do not want to see non-fitness stuff. This is VERY, VERY old ground. The arguments on both sides have already been hashed out -- repeatedly and heatedly.
Let me summarize:
Someone else pays for this website/bandwidth/server. Whatever you may think about it, it's THEIR site (from which you are welcome to take the fitness info FREEly). They provide said FREE fitness content to elicit intense physical/metabolic responses 3 days in a row AND, every 4th day, an article meant to elicit some "thoughtful" responses from the masses, as well.
If you no likey day 4, don't clickie the link or readie the posts.

Have a good one.

Comment #65 - Posted by: Dale Saran at May 16, 2006 4:04 PM

I don't claim to know a lot about "supply side" economics. Like most labels, it can mean almost whatever you want it to mean, but I do notice that the critics of Reagan's tax cuts and Bush's tax cuts all make the argument/assumption that cutting the tax RATE necessarily means a drop in tax REVENUES. However, experience has shown in both instances that cutting the rate resulted in increased revenues.

The exact same thing happened when John F. Kennedy cut tax rates, but since he was a Democrat he did not get accused of stealing from the poor to feed the rich.

The fallacy at the root of the ideas that cuts in tax rates will result in lower tax revenues and that tax rate increases will result in tax revenue increases is that it wrongly assumes people will not change their behavior in response to changes in the tax laws.

As for the article, hey I think the $100 gas tax rebate was a great idea. Only problem is it didn't go far enough. Instead of a one time thing, it should be bigger and permanent. And gas taxes should go up! What a way to reduce dependence on mideast oil and improve air quality. What a progressive idea. I can't believe this was dreamed up by Republicans.

Did ring practice...Got my year goal of multiple muscleups without touching down (one set of 3, one of 2...about 15-20 on the day- previous max in one day was 2). Also did my first routine a few times- muscleup to L-sit, straddle sit, forward roll, skin the cat to back lever, pullout, skin the cat dismount.

Almost forgot the famous quote from Ben Stein in "Ferris Bueler's Day Off:"
George Bush called this something economics. . .
Anyone?
"Voodoo Economics?"
Anyone?
Anyone?

Loved the Mc Sweeney's link. I give it a roundhouse kick and two chops to the back.

Forgot to add that this article is a classic example of facts presented in a misleading manner in order to suggest a relationship of cause and effect. So tax rates went down and tax revenues went up. Where is the evidence that the one led to the other? Who's to say that if tax rates had gone up, tax revenues wouldn't have been even higher?

When reading any sort of journalism these days I think the first thought should be "in whose interest is it to make these assertions?"

However, labeling this article as journalism is in itself a disgrace. It is not journalism but propaganda of the worst sort, propaganda of the fascism under which our now nation suffers.
