Comment #3 - Posted by: Jeremy_b at May 14, 2006 8:10 PM

quick question, are you supposed to partition these or do one set at a time

Comment #4 - Posted by: gena at May 14, 2006 8:10 PM

Can we do 25 pu, 25 su, 25 pu etc.?
Or do we need to do all of one excersize first?

Comment #5 - Posted by: JeffD at May 14, 2006 8:16 PM

It's (obviously) permissible to break up the individual exercises into sets (i.e. you don't have to do 1 set of 100 pullups...you can do 5 sets of 20 for example)

BUT

All the reps of a given exercise are meant to be completed before moving on to the next exercise in order to truly be an "official" or "as Rx'd" Angie.

IIRC

First ever day with Crossfit!
100 pull ups - joking, right? So - not as Rx, but chins 4X10, press ups/sits/squats 10X10, 12 minutes

Comment #14 - Posted by: Nick K at May 15, 2006 12:07 AM

Ah, Nick, Nick, Nick (#14)

No joke I'm afraid. Not too many people could do the 100 pull-ups in one go without stopping, but yes the intention is you do 100 pullups (10 x 10 or whatever break-up you can manage) THEN do 100 pushups (broken as required) THEN 100 sits THEN 100 squats. Kills the time compared to doing say 10 pulls, pushes, sits and squats, followed by 10 more of each and so on to 100.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jeff w at May 15, 2006 3:38 AM

#19 Jeff,
If you're looking on the exercise link, Do the Air Squats

Comment #20 - Posted by: Justin D at May 15, 2006 3:44 AM

Second Question :):

I'm looking at these times, and I think it'll take me as long to do the pullup portion as it did for you guys to do the whole thing! I can do 10 pullups at once. Any tips? 20sets x 5? Or should I decrease it to something more managable--say 50.

What kind of pullups, too? Overhand or palms facing towards you?

Comment #21 - Posted by: Jeff W at May 15, 2006 3:44 AM

I moved some heavy lockers around this morning before tackling "Angie". She's a bitch. 21.48, not bad considering. I think the 100 pull ups really slowed down my push ups. I felt wasted!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Steve at May 15, 2006 3:45 AM

Jeff,
There are many ways to do the pullups.
I find kipping is the best, but if you try that and cant do anymore you can do jumping pullups (jump up as ur pulling yourself up) or negatives. I prefer overhand, but you can switch the grip thorought the 100. 100 seems like a lot, but I'm sure you can get them all done.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Justin D at May 15, 2006 3:50 AM

Last time I broke Angie into sets of 25. Today I think I'm gonna complete all 100 of each before moving on. Expect it to take much longer but really want to make it to the "as rx'd" club even if I have ridiculous times

100 pullups are always a challenge. They take about 25 minutes and then the rest of the workout takes about six minutes. Does that seem right to you?

Anyway, the elbow's still giving me fits. I had to lose one of my grips (palms out) after the first thirty. That slowed me down considerably.

New to Crossfit, and I have a quick question (with myriad more to come I'm sure): What is the logic behind a "Kip" pull-up, and using moment to get above the bar? Isn't that a "cheat rep" compared to a strict, traditional pull-up? Thanks....looking forward to a daily beating.

Hey-

Jump rope 5min warmup

WOD Angie 25:16

HSPU, Jump rope-10min, Heavy bag work, another jump rope-10min, 4 x 250m rower, L-pullups.

I had one of those interesting moments at Gold's today. While on my 3rd set of 10 pullups. Two lumpy dudes came over to tell me that I was going to hurt myself doing pullups that way. So I stopped my watch and let them demonstrate how to do strict dead-hang pullups. I told them that I was going for 100 pullups and I'd take em any way I could get em. I showed em kipping PU and I showed em L-Pullups. They though I was wrong about the kipping, but I gained their respect with 5 real nice L-pullups with my legs straight, feet high, my head and shoulders above the bar.

Anyway, its fun to be the new guy at a gym when things are going your way.

Good luck in your training,

-K

060515 33:34 (060220 29:35; 051103 = 38:35; previous- 35:58]

100 pullups (11:41; 17:58; 15:36): 25/8/7/5/10/7/6/5/7/5/5/5/5
100 pushups (6:02; 6:32; 6:46): 30/20/15/15/13/7
100 situps (7:12; 8:56; 7:27): 25/25/25/15/10
100 squats (8:39; 5:08; 6:19): 15/15/15/15/10/10/10/10

pullups kipped; situps anchored; squats to 20 lb Dynamax ball and focusing on form - rehab of knee. Everything faster except squats - so, progress of sorts!

Unbelievable!!! Time=42:17 Age: 52
The pullups took 22 minutes.
Ripped a big piece of skin off my hand.
Need to learn how do kipping pullups I guess.
Wow! am I weak at pullups or what!

Comment #116 - Posted by: JACKC at May 15, 2006 12:21 PM

1st Angie

100 Pullups 14:42------Palms away and neutral
100 Pushups 9:42 / 24:24 ------ Wide and narrow hands
100 Situps 9:27 / 33:51------- Heels hooked over bar
100 Squats 4:41 / 38:32 ------- A to H

The pullups killed my pushups. Situps are always kinda weak.
I think, because I have to break down my sets in the first three, that I break the squats down too much. I set a goal of 25 in my head and completed it but I could probably have done double. Realized this at the end of my third 25 and fought all to way to the finish at 100 total. Blew me out. I'm sure it would have not been as effective if I had finished with two broken sets of 25.
An underated aspect (by me at least) of Crossfit is the mental toughness it develops.

CF family, need help, advice, guidance, etc.

Have laid off pull-ups for over 3 wks due to pain in upper forearm/elbow area. Decided to try them again today w/ Angie (intended on doing about half pull-ups/half pulldowns) Got to about 5 and had to quit because of pain! Do I need a longer lay off, go to doc, etc???

b/w is about 200

Finished Angie w/pulldowns for pullups
100 pulldowns- 6:04
100 push-ups- 12:15
100 sit-ups- 16:45
100 squats- 20:43

Was much harder than last time when I broke it into alternating sets of 25. Feel like I'm really missing out not being able to do pull-ups. Would appreciate any wisdom. Thanks

#118 Nick - I'm also not a doctor, but I do have experience with pain in the elbow/forearm area, and thought I'd share my experience.

Doing some insane house remodeling jobs caused me to get pain in my elbow towards the crook of my arm (about an inch up from the pointy part of my elbow). It got so bad that I couldn't turn a doorknob or shake hands without pain. I tried icing it and taking loads of ibuprofen (400-600mg 3x daily), but in the end I went to the doctor and he diagnosed it as simple tendonitis, or "tennis elbow", and gave me a cortisone injection at the site of the pain. The pain immediately went away but I continued to rest it for a couple of weeks anyway to allow it to properly heal. I ended up with a couple of pink spots on my arm at the injection site, but they went away after a few weeks. So for me, rest and ibuprofen simply weren't enough to allow the tendonitis to heal. My advice - go see your doctor. I can almost guarantee that he'll put you on an anti-inflammatory medicine. Good luck.

No "Angie" today. Long weekend and have been wanting to do some DL's. So I chose to dance w/Diane. Very slow, but good w/form on the DL's.

Get some, GO again!

21:43 as Rxed, which is about a 2:15 improvement from last time (November 2005). Pullups were the weak link today. First set was 25, which is not quite PR land.

training board used for pull ups- stuck with juggy holds that ripped up my hands.

pretty sure that was faster than the last but have not checked my records yet. also a little tired

today i had another trainer at my gym try to come up with a workout to break me. i call it the "jeff-ina." takes two bars to set up, one for squats, and one for clean&press and bent over rows. total of ten rounds 25 second rest between each round.

rounds 1-3

40 jumping jacks
16 pushups w/extension of one hand towards the celing
20 squats 135lbs
20 squats body weight
8 clean&press 95lbs
10 bent over rows 95 lbs
10 pull ups

4th round is in reverse
10 pull ups
10 bent over rows
8 clean&press
20 squats
20 squats 135lbs
16 push ups w/ extension
40 jumping jacks

rounds 5-8
12 dumbbell thrusters
10 curl and press 35lb

rounds 9-10
1 min of mountain climbers
10 bodybuilders (similar to a burpee)
25ft of wheelbarrels

all in all it took me about 22 minutes to complete the jeff-ina. it is pretty fun. i am going to keep working at it, probably refine it a little and add some sprinting to the mix.

get some, go again

35 pull ups, kipping, 10,10,5,5,5
75 pushups, 15,15,15,10,10,10
75 sit-ups, 20,20,20,15
50 squats, 20,20,10 tried really hard to maintain form on squats, slow and a-to-a.
i didn't even bother with time, just wanted to see how far I could go. BW 234# why did i ever let myself get old and soft

First time with Angie. Only a couple of times in my life have I ever felt like my triceps were going to fall off. The famous 'horse shoe' began to burn around push-up #30. Needless to say the pull ups took just about all my upper body to complete.

Angie kicked my ass! Gotta love it.

I have done it quicker before but I did more pullups w/o jumping or assistance this time. I do good till about 50 and after that I start slowing way down.

Comment #219 - Posted by: Glen at May 15, 2006 6:43 PM

Hmm... not too good.

6'4" tall, bw 210 lbs

50 pull-ups, heavily partitioned
50 push-ups, likewise
50 sit-ups, 5x10 (full sit ups on incline board, straight back, hands at temples, elbows out)
100 air squats

27:30

pull-ups are definitely my weakest area, but push-ups aren't great either. But it looks like it's not uncommon not to do the full 100, so I don't feel too bad ... have only been doing crossfit for a couple of weeks, and then not with perfect attendance. Can feel myself getting better, though.

First time with Angie, saw it in the morning but wasn't able to get to it until tonight. I actually looked forward to it all day... it's been a stressful week and these WODs have really helped.

Since I'm new to this and taking it slow, I scaled it to 50%:

50 pull-ups, assisted with theraband
50 push-ups, inclined (the easier kind)
50 sit-ups, full range, unanchored
50 squats, just past parallel (slowly working toward better depth, knee is fine with it so far)

All sets broken, something close to 10-10-10-10-5-5 for each.

21:27. The pull-ups and push-ups really nailed me, but I could have done more sit-ups and squats. Next time!

Push-ups: 7 mins., all strict, about 40, then 10's
Sit-ups: 10 mins., unanchored on mat, about 25, then 8-10's

Angie...one word. OUCH!

This is definitely one to give a newbie a reading on how far you have to go! You sub 20 minute folks are amazing!

Pull ups: (kipping, jumping, scratching, clawing, and ultimately...gravitron assisted) 12:13
Push ups: (were those really sets of 6 I was doing at the end?) 24:30
Sit ups: 34:21
Squats: 39:50 (it might have been 39:45 but it hurt too much to squeeze the stop button on my watch!)

Holy cow, this was a muhtha! Lots of breaks, rests, huffing and puffing, etc. Can't wait until the next time!

23:30- 10 seconds faster than last time. Pullups on rings, feet unanchored. Wife cranked out 200 situps and 200 squats.

Comment #275 - Posted by: AndrewB at May 16, 2006 5:33 AM

Was looking at the pull-up bar for a while trying to stare it into submission. Didn't work...ggrrrr....
50 Pull ups (broken into 10 reps then five. After second set all were negative pullups)
50 Sit ups (broken into groups of 10)
50 Push ups (groups of 10 for first two sets, 5 after and modified)
50 Squats (groups of 10 love some squats. Truthfully, could have done more squats)

19:30

Could have pushed myself harder I guess but push-ups and pull-ups are already modified almost to exhaustion.

Time 30:26 - not a PR, should've looked at previous time (29:15) before doing this, to help motivate a quicker pace.
Pull-ups: sets of 5 unassisted (six sets), sets of 5 jumping (four sets), sets of 10 on machine (five sets)
Pushups: 10 sets of 10
situps: 10 sets of 10 (unanchored)

Hampton-

There was nothing wrong with my clock. I have done Angie a few times as well as the The Seal Quest version of Angie plus the HSPU's and Flutter Kicks. I believe that my time would have been slightly extended if I was able to use the sit up bench but not by too much.

Comment #299 - Posted by: tom diehl at May 16, 2006 10:22 AM

After doing a lovely 2hr exam about e-business (not fun) I went to gym. By mistake I did it out of sync, so it was pull-ups (on Gravitron 15kg assist), sit-ups, squats then push-ups.

I completed all except the last 50 of push-ups, I was simply DEAD! I was at around the 40min mark when I stopped. First date with a lady, I think I’ll stay a bachelor. First time I’ve done that many pull-ups which should help me get my first none assisted pull-up!

34:57. Subbed 50 Reverse Hyper situps for the 100 regular situps. I'm going to get an Abmat. I didn't have a towel, and I've found I get a burn on my tailbone if I just do regular situps on the floor.

Dan, good meeting you. Everyone else as well. I'll be sending out some message.
