Alright! An easy day!

Comment #3 - Posted by: Mark at April 12, 2006 8:51 PM

Thank god... finally a chance to redeem myself from the last 10K.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Kevin at April 12, 2006 8:55 PM

Well at least I only have to get through a 5k by its self this time.Feet don't fail me now!!!

Comment #5 - Posted by: gale at April 12, 2006 8:59 PM

YES! I wanted to run tommorow cause I missed the 10k. I think I'll make it a 10k...possibly in boots!

Comment #6 - Posted by: John at April 12, 2006 9:29 PM

sweeeeet!

Comment #7 - Posted by: steve hb at April 12, 2006 9:45 PM

Well, my crappy feet killed my 5K run from the other day (No way I can to 10K) after 1 mile. So, perhaps I'll do my homebrewed KB workout....

Comment #8 - Posted by: TimW at April 12, 2006 9:57 PM

Isn't Camp Slayer the one next to Camp Motorhead?

Nice pic. Stay safe guys.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Dan Silver at April 12, 2006 10:01 PM

After the 10K this is going to be nothing!!

Comment #10 - Posted by: tenacious "D" at April 12, 2006 10:01 PM

Was anyone else alittle slow today? I think there was some risidual "Linda" hanging around for the 5k, my time was a dismal 25:52. Oh well I guess you can't win them all. Have a good day.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Todd at April 12, 2006 10:36 PM

What's the deal out there in Santa Cruz? It's bad enough that we have to fear for our safety in Iraq, BUT THE USA?!?!?!

Come ON! If those protestors were doing CrossFit they wouldn't have enough time or energy for violent protest!!! CrossFit can change the world, one WOD at a time! :)

Did Linda at a lower weight than Rx'd. Yet, I finished it in 45 minutes.

Will try to work the run in sometime today.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Stuart R at April 13, 2006 2:22 AM

5k in 23:02. 1:50 better than last one, but I was still slower than I'm capable. That 10k and Linda had my legs sore from the start.
Rest day tomorrow. Mmmmmmmmmmmm. Tasty.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Sean G at April 13, 2006 3:05 AM

ran 20 min hard on treadmill @ 9.5 miles/hour @ level 2 incline

Comment #18 - Posted by: opt at April 13, 2006 3:50 AM

I cant believe that I got beat to the Slayer reference, although I should have known Dan would be awake and jump on that. Speaking of Sepultura, the singer is an old friend of mine, need to get him into CrossFit.

Question. Are you suppose to do abs with every WOD? I haven't seen abs in the WOD. Would you do a CF Warm Up with the 5K?

Comment #25 - Posted by: JM at April 13, 2006 5:27 AM

19:08.24
A bit slow this AM. Pool later.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Matt G. at April 13, 2006 5:34 AM

23:54

Quite a bit slower than the last one but then again it wasn't preceded by "Linda". My back tightened up several times requiring me to stop and stretch. The tight back is due from inflexibility and not from the WODs.

Comment #27 - Posted by: anthony at April 13, 2006 5:48 AM

WOD @ 271.5 BWT

I subbed a 5 K time trial run for Grace a couple of days ago so I rowed a 5K today in 19:43, 14 seconds better than the last time I rowed a 5K and my AHR was lower. I converted my old MB to a single speeder and road it to the club for a warm up. All I did was remove the rear derailer(sp?) and shorten the chain.

I'm always trying to guess what tomorrow's WOD will be when I retire for the night. I'm almost always wrong and sometimes not even close. CF, like life, is unpredictable. You gotta be ready for anything; no easy grooves here!

Comment #33 - Posted by: tedw at April 13, 2006 7:06 AM

Comment #34 - Posted by: hooksy at April 13, 2006 7:15 AM

JM # 25 - ABS are always in the CFWU and there are occasions when we are required to do knees to elbows which is a ab blaster as are the L sits and L pull-ups. You get a lot of core training though due to the fact that most of our exercises are ground based and you are balancing a bar on your shoulders or doing a full body movement like a clean or snatch. These activities activate the abs mush better than any standard crunch or sit-up ever would.

3 mile training run ~28 mins

Followed by:
3 sets
10 reps BP at 65, 85, 95lbs.
10 reps dumbells curls ~20lbs
20 reps sit ups.

Go get 'em crossfitters!

Comment #45 - Posted by: Kels at April 13, 2006 8:21 AM

Lets say 30 minutes. Forgot to time it until started to run. Legs . . . pain . . . need help

Comment #46 - Posted by: Suavdaddy at April 13, 2006 8:23 AM

3 rounds/15 reps of the Crossfit warm-up. I held the Samson stretch for 30 seconds each side, each time. The sit-ups were anchored, 70 lbs. on the Chin Assist and 50-60 lbs. on the Dip Assist.

I ran 5K on the treadmill in 24:50. Since I did Tuesday's WOD yesterday, I opted not to run it at my race pace...more like a semi-tempo run. After the run, I did 30 minutes on the upright Precor bike at a light intensity to cool down.

I look forward to the day that I overcome my psychological and physical aversion to running. Didn't even consider trying the 10K the other day. Plodded thru today's 5K but finally had a morning with no rain, so had a beautiful sunrise jog along the shoreline. Plantar fasciatis is now rearing its ugly head!

#49 Sharon.

Feet hurt in the morning on first step out of bed, or after run? How old are your running sneaks? You should try getting a shoe that is right for your foot/arch/walking/running style. Check roadrunner.com and use shoe dog to help find choices for you. I have found that getting a new shoe really helps with foot/shin problems.

Cindy, 10k, Linda,5k, Jim slow today. 23:04. My out time in the 10k was 23:20. I feel pathetic.

Well, I guess my runs will improve. 12 years ago I was doing 6:00 miles for 5k's, now I can't even get a descent stride.

#50 Geoff,

Feet (foot) hurt after run today but not when I got out of bed this morning. Although I've had enough episodes of PF (including the classic pain on awakening) to recognize the symptoms. Since I'm not a hard core runner and when I do run I tend to overwhelmingly be on a treadmill, I hadn't considered investing in a specialized running shoe. Generally I do my (non-tennis) workouts, including treadmill runs, in a good cross training shoe, but wear specialized shoes for tennis as I play competitively. I'll definitely go to a specialty store and look into something that will be more suitable for running. Thanks for the feedback!!!

Comment #55 - Posted by: Sharon Smith-Mauney at April 13, 2006 8:57 AM

Oy! The agony of de feet! And the calves! And the lower back! And the....

Comment #60 - Posted by: JeffT at April 13, 2006 9:17 AM

The WOD feature of crossfit is just great, keeps me on my toes and saves my mental energy for the books/classwork. Cause of my knees I did the 5k on a track and field "soft" track: ~17:45. Need to work on my handstands.

Comment #61 - Posted by: Y. Zhou at April 13, 2006 9:19 AM

#57 Tommy,
Search the message board, Nutrition Heading, I remember reading about a couple people that went on the Zone and that helped with Type II. I am trying Zone since Feb. 1, with the Paleo Foods: Lean Meats, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, and some nuts, exclude dairy, Legumes, Grains, add fish oils, I feel great and recovery time for muscles is down after hard workouts.

Hello Rest Day!

Comment #71 - Posted by: Chris Jordan at April 13, 2006 10:29 AM

Tommy#57,

I agree that the Zone, paleo approach would work well for the type2. Word of caution, the kidney problem could add another whole aspect to the thing, requiring a renal/diabetic diet, depending upon how bad the kidney test numbers are. Might be good to encourage him to speak to a dietician, with blood test results in hand.

Good luck.

I reserve running for when I'm being chased

Comment #74 - Posted by: Matt Roodzant at April 13, 2006 11:34 AM

I'm running 2 days behind right now on the routine. That is, I started Satuday's Nancy on Monday, thus I'm doing Tuesday's 10k tonight. My pecs are just about to burst out of my chest right now from Cindy, and I'm due for 3 bars of death tomorrow. I really don't see completing the BP portion of the circuit.

Can I substitute HSPU's instead?

rowed the 10K this week, so I actually ran the 5K (measured with that gmap pedometer posted the other day... neat!)

5K run= 24:19 (finished 2.5K in 12:00)
route was a there and back, finishing with a 3/4 mile hill.

I haven't run a 5K since 5/12/2005 (22:45) and don't run for the WODs, I always do a C2 row substitution, so pretty happy with the time today...

Wasn't sure of the distance so I decided to play it safe and do more than less.

The muscles in the front on my shins were cramping again today and caused to to stop for numerous stretch and walk breaks. Hopefully it is just my legs readjusting to the demands of running after being C2 bound over the winter.

3rd crossfit day for me. Yikes! 30min.

Ran 11 laps around a baseball field. However, I pulled up hurt after the first lap, it felt as if I tore something in my right calf. It hurts to straighten my foot, walk on it and my calf is really tight.

With so much pro-police sentiment flooding the nation lately, I knew that throwing cold water on the positive mood woould not be greeted favorably by most. But the fact is, there are any number of problems with the resurrection of the "heroic cop" image in the public imagination.

First, if we define heroism by the extent to which one puts his life on the line in the course of his work -- and apparently that's the operative definition nowadays -- then there is nothing all that heroic about policing. According to the Department of Labor, the on-the-job fatality rate for police is lower than that for gardeners, electricians, truck drivers, garbage collectors, construction workers, airline pilots, timber cutters, and commercial fisherman. In fact, fishermen have an occupational fatality rate that is fifteen times higher than that for cops, but rarely do we hear those who provide us with an endless supply of mahi-mahi described as heroes.

An average of 66 police officers per year were killed feloniously during the 1990s, with the number falling to only 42 in 1999. As Marie De Santis, Director of the Women's Justice Center explains, the flawed presentation of cops as embattled heroes is not only inaccurate, but also dangerous: "By cultivating a hyper-inflated myth of heroes sacrificing their lives for you, police have created a shield of public veneration to defend against criticism of any misdeed. Who then can blame police for building arsenals against the citizens, for firing at first blink, for medieval codes of silence?"

De Santis further notes that the notion of police as constantly endangered has other deleterious effects. It reinforces macho attitudes and behavior on the force, thereby limiting the presence of women in policing. And studies have determined that the male dominance of policing limits the effectiveness of law enforcement in dealing with domestic violence and general violence against women, which accounts for roughly a third of all police calls.

Secondly, there is nothing inherently noble about police work. After all, would most Americans think highly of law enforcement officers in North Korea? Or Iraq? Of course not. What makes policing noble is always and only the validity of the system for which officers are working. And while I am hardly analogizing the U.S. justice system to that of North Korea, Iraq, or any other authoritarian nation, the point is still valid. If the system is rife with inequality and injustice, then those whose job it is to uphold that system are part of the problem, just as much as they may be part of the "solution" to something like crime. By presenting police officers as inherently special and vital bulwarks against chaos, pro-cop ideologues paper over ongoing injustices in the system, making it more difficult to see and ultimately fix those problems.

Tim

People have different definitions of what a hero is and being in law enforcement is not yours. Okay, we get it your not a fan. I'm a cop and yes not everything i do is heroic or for that matter corrupt like you say. did you happen to write the articles you referenced in both of your comments? Were you wronged by a policeman in some way and now you feel you must write articles degrading police officers? If so get over it.

I would agree that not everybody in law enforcement deserves to be there. there will always be the bad apple(s). but i think that holds true in every profession. even in the journalistic world.

i serve people on a daily basis and sometimes do things that other people may consider heroic and other people consider what is expected me. again its all on how you look at it and what your definition is. some people see the Minister Louis Farakahn or Malcom X as racist and other peple see them as heros. Agian, it's all about perception.

Try not paint the law enforcment field with such a broad brush. It just makes you sound stupid.

Jeff W#189 From the article (degrading article???) written by Tim Wise, not me.

"Despite the public's enhanced veneration of police in the wake of 9/11, the evidence indicates that there is plenty reason to withhold effusive praise and commendation.

Policing is still not carried out in a fair and equitable manner. There are still far too many innocent and/or unarmed people being killed in questionable circumstances by law enforcement officers, and the culture of policing is still one that lends itself to a militaristic, good guy/bad guy mentality that almost inherently perpetuates not only brutality and misconduct, but also the wall of silence that protects both.

Police don't deserve hero treatment based on the risks they take, which aren't nearly as severe as they might like us to think. Rather, they will be deserving of such support only when they root out profiling, testosterone-soaked machismo, and the God complexes which allow so many of them to conclude that they are the law, instead of public servants and employees, whose employers are, ultimately, the very citizens they seek to control."

Tim,

Yes, I felt Tim Wise's (not you) articles were "degrading". My perception of what he wrote about law enforcment in America is that we are racist, thugs prone to misconduct. Not true. Not everyone is going to be a fan. Especially people that are prone to breaking the laws or their family members who benifit from the criminals deeds(money).

You can look at every facet of society and career field and see nuckelheads that will give it a bad rep. Everything in life is not going to carried out in a fair or equal manner. That's just life.

Police officers are often involved in tense evolving situations that require a decision to made with limited facts. Will mistakes be made? Yes and there are going to be the monday morning quarterback that will have a better way to solve the problem only after all the facts are known and they can sift through them in a controlled enviroment. Thats the nature of the beast.

I have read the two articles you keep referencing so you don't need to keep writing them over in you posts so I like them better. That's your perception of things.

If you feel so strongly about police corruption I'm sure you could go through the police academy, become a police officer and try to be a positive role model for the rest of us. Keep us posted on how that works out.

Especially people that are prone to breaking the laws or their family members who benifit from the criminals deeds(money).>I have read the two articles you keep referencing so you don't need to keep writing them over in you posts so I like them better.>If you feel so strongly about police corruption I'm sure you could go through the police academy, become a police officer and try to be a positive role model for the rest of us. Keep us posted on how that works out.<<

Ah yes,the ole 'why don't you join the force and try to change it from the inside out' argument. This is like suggesting that instead of invading Iraq, the U.S. should have tried to get one man inside Saddam's government and "try to be a positive role model for the rest of them." I think we know how that would have worked out.

We need civilian oversight practitioners and supporters working to promote fair, firm and consistent law enforcement in the United States through the practice of civilian oversight. If not,the problems will continue to increase.

Tim,
Ah, the old I could not really handle the job of a police officer or I have been arrested and now have an agenda so I want to be on a civilian oversight board argument. Good one. If you got all of the concerned people togther who support the web sites you reference it would not be just one. That's like not voting and saying my one vote is really not going to count. I'm sure you could lead by example.

Jeff W >> the old I could not really handle the job of a police officer or I have been arrested and now have an agenda<<

Spoken like a true 'us against them' mentality having officer, you actually believe that this is what most or all people on civilian oversight boards are there for, because they have been arrested or can't handle being a policeman? Let me educate you a bit, civilian oversight is based on the belief that law enforcement derives its authority from the community, and requires a two-way dialog between the community and those charged with the duty to enforce laws.

From the
National Association for Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement site:

"NACOLE recognizes that the majority of law enforcement officers strive, often under dangerous and demanding circumstances, to carry out their duties in a restrained, lawful and professional manner. Despite this, the United States has a growing crisis of police misconduct. Citizens want to feel secure that police officers are in the community to serve and protect all citizens of that community. We believe that citizens have a right to assurance that adequate mechanisms are available to review and investigate questionable or unacceptable actions of law enforcement officers."

By the way Jeff W #205

In closing, the man who insists that justice can only be maintained by the rule of law is the same one who appears on the witness stand at the war crime tribunal swearing that he was only following orders.
