Happy Thanksgiving! Great workout to do between cooking and watching football. I'm out.

Comment #1 - Posted by: Chris Brown at November 23, 2005 7:41 PM

So you do a clean, then while the bar is on your chest, do the press and 2 jerks, then return the bar to the floor, and that's one rep? Repeat till you get to 10 reps?

Comment #2 - Posted by: John B at November 23, 2005 7:42 PM

Best wishes to all for a happy Thanksgiving. Thanks to everyone...Coach, Lauren, CF Staff and gods...and all the daily posters for constant inspiration. You're all on my "thankful for" list. I hope everyone has a nice cheat day...

Right on Matt G. My thoughts exactly. I'm not a 'regular' poster, but this community is important to me. Thanks everyone.

Comment #6 - Posted by: jimbutts at November 23, 2005 7:51 PM

Sorry to have been the only post to date just asking questions and not mentioning Thanksgiving. No disrespect intended, but I'm not American and didn't realise what the day was. Glad Chris got in with the first post while I was typing mine! Enjoy the day.

Comment #7 - Posted by: John B at November 23, 2005 8:04 PM

Happy Thanksgiving all! Hope you enjoy the people you're with, where you are, and the food on your table. And thanks to the CrossFit community.

Nice picture..

John B.

It is o.k. -- I don't think we are the sensitive type.

Anyhow I had the same questions.....

Comment #10 - Posted by: Sue A. at November 23, 2005 8:31 PM

Is John B right with the whole all in one thing?
Anybody?

Comment #11 - Posted by: jimmy at November 23, 2005 8:41 PM

I am also confused about this workout.

10 sets of the compound movement "Clean-Push Press-Push Jerk-Split Jerk" ???

That seems to make more sense than 40 singles, 10 of each lift.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Andy Shirley at November 23, 2005 8:45 PM

I'm confused as well.

And Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!!! We miss you folks over seas and are thinking of you.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Brad Wilson at November 23, 2005 9:10 PM

Oh CANT WAIT. IF I figure it out rgihgt clean, then push press, then jerk, then split jerk. Back down. One rep. Whooah... lets do it again!@$@ Anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but I beleive thi is the waqy to execute.

Comment #14 - Posted by: REGY at November 23, 2005 9:27 PM

I can't quite get the technique for the Push Jerk and the Split Jerk, so all i did was the clean, then three Push Presses in a row, then lowered.
Lift weights:
77-77-99-99-110-110-115-115-115-115 (not bad for a 176 pound 18 year old newbie). Then i did about 5 more at 99 to demonstrate some things to my brother to get him started, but he is so tall that he busted a light and put a plate through the roof.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Henry at November 23, 2005 9:28 PM

Oh , sorry about the misspels. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I am thankfull for DAN JOHN enlightenig us on the O lift.

I'm so thankful I found the CF site and this community a little over a year ago. Coach Glassman - thanks for all you've done and all you continue to do with the Journal and this site. Lynne Pitts - thanks for moderating the board. To all CF'ers new and old - thanks for making this online community what it is... the best resource for the pursuit of elite fitness in the world.

Comment #18 - Posted by: B_White at November 23, 2005 9:35 PM

DAN S!

When did you grow a pony tail?!

Comment #19 - Posted by: J Jones at November 23, 2005 9:41 PM

Happy Turkey Day all - from Afghanistan! I'm new to this community, but while away from home, I love coming to this board and seeing the posts, getting some motivation, and having a few laughs. So, many thx to all who come here and push themselves in pursuit of excellence.
Henry, that's some funny sh*t. Try and get your brother hooked - and get him some coordination. Don't feel bad, though. We don't get any smarter as we get older. I bought some golf clubs a few years back and was just "feeling 'em out" - just lifting up on a backswing - when I smashed a light in the basement in front of a friend who had just said - "you're going to bust a light." "No, I'm not." But yes I did.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Sean G. at November 23, 2005 9:51 PM

Hey, I think I figured this out. I just looked at all of the clips again, and another one I had called push-jerk-drill.

I think the idea is to -
(a) clean the weight, then (b) push press and come back to clean position, (c) push-jerk and come back to clean position, and then (d) spilt-jerk and then down.

I suppose you could rack it after the clean and just pick it up and do each one, but that seems like cheating and would diminish the shoulder burn. After looking at this carefully, I have decided that this is going to be an ass-kicker, despite how benign it looks when written down.

Sorry if this sounds obvious to anyone.
(insert standard newbie disclaimer here)

Today is a rest day for me. This is much needed, I can tell you. Happy Thanksgiving.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Mike Joyce at November 23, 2005 10:49 PM

Seriously, when is Crossfit going to start its own dating service?

Comment #23 - Posted by: Ryan N at November 23, 2005 10:55 PM

I'm on holiday without my gym, but near a pool so I'm going to do Russ Greene's swimming WoD:

Max rounds in 20 minutes
35 squats
25 pushups
100 metres swim.

I'm not sure what thanksgiving is, but anyway, thanks too to Coach and Lauren and all my buddies here on Crossfit. At the tender age of 38 I am stronger, fitter and leaner now than ever have been in my life. Learning how to walk on my hands is just a bonus. :)

Comment #24 - Posted by: Matt Townsend at November 23, 2005 11:21 PM

Seriously, someone please shed som definitive light on this WOD please.

I'm hella confused.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Chris C` at November 23, 2005 11:57 PM

happy thanksgiving to everyone involved and who made a commitment to doing the WOD..

Comment #26 - Posted by: dennyy at November 24, 2005 12:16 AM

my understanding is you're basically doing 9 reps of each lift. so, 1 clean, rest, 1 clean...total of 9.

then push press, jerk, split.

all in all, you should do 36 reps.

someone tell me if that's wrong, but that's my understanding.

happy turkey day to all!

Comment #27 - Posted by: rob at November 24, 2005 12:22 AM

Sean G. is right.

Comment #28 - Posted by: AMT at November 24, 2005 2:04 AM

I did it as I noted above. Practiced with a light bar a few minutes to get the motions down, but form still not great on cleans. Have a tendency to spread legs out wider to get under the weight.

1 CFWU
75-95-95-105-105-115-115-125-135-135

Push press was weakest by far. Push jerk strongest. Really able to drive wt up and get under it. Is this usual?

Comment #29 - Posted by: Sean G. at November 24, 2005 3:19 AM

I went with Sean G.'s recommendation...it looked right to me.

10k race this a.m.
95/105/115/135/145f/140/145/150/140/115

First time ever doing these exercises, I ended day with form practice, which I need.

I would like to echo all the Happy Thanksgiving wishes to everybody and say I am proud to be part of this awesome program. I am spreading the Crossfit word like a Crusader OD'ing on Red Bull! Everyday I look forward to the WOD, and enjoy the comments (especially the plate through the roof).

A safe Holiday to all the Troops oversea's...You make us all proud, GOD BLESS THE U.S.

Comment #30 - Posted by: buster at November 24, 2005 3:23 AM

My guess on today's WOD

Clean the weight;
do the PP, lower bar to shoulders;
do power jerk, lower bar to shoulders;
do split jerk. The end.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Jonathan Jensen at November 24, 2005 3:53 AM

Of course, do the aforementioned ten times.

Comment #32 - Posted by: Jonathan Jensen at November 24, 2005 3:55 AM

Thanksgiving marks 1 full year of crossfit for me. Not going to reiterate what everyone else has already said, so one big THANK YOU to everyone already mentioned!!

Comment #33 - Posted by: kls at November 24, 2005 3:56 AM

I like Jensen's plan...I think I will go with that. It sounds a lot more pleasant. Also more in line with what we normally have been doing. I don't have the motivation after yesterday to do 4 rounds. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks to all of our Troops overseas! Be safe!

Comment #34 - Posted by: Ed at November 24, 2005 4:01 AM

Mr. Townsend,
During the fall of 1642, their second year in Plymoth, and after having barely survived the previous winter, a small and very humbled group of pilgrims prepaired a feast of the bounty from their first harvest in the 'new world'.
This rag-tag group invited as guests, those who had made that harvest- and their continued survival possible; the natives who had taught them farming, gathering, and hunting practices compatible with this new land. Canadians celebrate this day six weeks earlier than the U.S., and can claim a date for their first harvest in the New World 46 years earlier (I believe- any of you Northern(est) Americans jump in here & correct me).
This first Thanksgiving was not, as we celebrate, a reunion of extended families; whom they had for the most part left behind. Rather it was a celebration of thanks to a new family, for a gift of knowledge given freely in trust. A gift that empowered them to not only survive, but to thrive & enjoy their new world to an extent not previously possible.

So thanks, Coach & Lauren, and all the others who work so diligently that this new family of ours can thrive as well. You represent the very best of what I am so proud to defend.

Comment #35 - Posted by: Cates at November 24, 2005 4:26 AM

May all of you and those you love have a Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for your example, generosity, expertice, and encouragement. For those of you who are spending your Thanksgiving away from family standing on a wall, patrolling a street, or responding to those in dire need, my famliy and I thank you. Take care of yourself.

Finally, thank you to the Glassman family. Your service is appreciated.

With respect,

Gus Sonnenberg

As I am not at home with my blood family this year (only the second time for me), but look forward to enjoying the day with some of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms who could not make it home, I take Cates' words to heart - very well said. I am thankful to spend this holiday with some of my new family.

I am also selling Crossfit to anyone and everyone that'll give me a minute. I love this site, the community and the incredible benefits it has lead me to in fitness. Coach, Lauren, staff - you guys have got something increbible here and I thank you so much for that. Keep up the amazing work.

Comment #48 - Posted by: Paul at November 24, 2005 7:08 AM

Modified the WOD as follows:
Front Squat ME: finished with 275 PR, 265 prior best. Failed on 295. Twice. Got it up both times, but didn't go low enough.

Clean-PP-PJ-SJ 1-1-1-1-1/1
135, 155, 175, 195, 215/215(PC-PP-PJ)/(PC-SJ)

Cleans were of the Power variety. Everything over 175 is a PR in the Split jerk.

Also BW today was 232. Down 10 or so since starting a pseudo-zone, mostly paleo diet. I'm ramping my way into it. What I'm doing is working though, so not too much tweaking yet.

Comment #49 - Posted by: Andy Shirley at November 24, 2005 7:09 AM

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL CROSSFITERS WHERE EVER YOU ARE.....@ HOME & OVERSEAS ,,,Thanks for all you @ HQ have done & will do.

Kempie,
I was hoping for a break in my schedule to let me hop over to your seminar tonight- wasn't to be. I'm sorry to have missed it as I know it will be awsome! Be sure to post some photos for us!

WOD: 135,140,145,150,155,160,165- starting to strain on the split-jerks, 170- missed first then got it, 175, then went up to 185 PR for C&J, don't even have a clue how that happened.
Thanks again CF!

I need more practice with the split jerk. I did pretty well on the last one.

I still haven't figured out how to rest the bar on my shoulders instead of my wrists. I think I'm holding the bar too tight, but I don't want to release the bar unless it's really resting on my shoulders. I may have some flexibility issues. I couldn't seem to point my elbows forward without releasing the bar. Suggestions please?

Thank you Coach, Lauren, and to this great, great community. Each year with Crossfit gets better and the community grows not only in numbers but also in strength, quality, commitment, and love. While I don't post very frequently, I usually start and end my day on this website and check it a few times during the day. Mike-h,

Re: Renegage Man Maker

Check out the gym jones website under schedule for the best explaination. Believe the instructions are posted under the last posted workout.

Sorta like a burpee that has been possessed by Satan. Using 25 lb DB's start in an extended push press position, then drop down to a burpee position with the dumbells as your anchor. Do a pushup, then a single arm row while still in the pushup position with each arm. Transition to the position you would use to begin the jump on the burpee and clean the DB's. Once you do that push press or jerk em to the starting position and repeat.
Who ever invented above is one sick bastard. They made me met Pukie this morning.

Hope this helps.

Happy Thanksgiving to all; thanks to the Glassmans; the superstars like Kelly and Matt G and Eva T and all the others who inspire me; thanks to all of our servicemen and women and other first responders for putting it on the line for us.

Taking it easy on the shoulder tonight, so some light weight work:
1/2 pood kb snatches: 25 l/r-20 l/r-15 l/r-10 l/r-5 l/r (no breaks). 5 min rest, then

3/4 pood kb snatches: nonstop reps in 10 min: 100 l/100r. Done in sets of 10s and 5s.

This was the first time going over 135 for me b/c I have been trying to work on form since I started two months ago. It was heavy for me, but I am glad I spent some time on form. I think I would have blown a gasket if I had tried this earlier.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that.

Finally developing a quick split-jerk. Finished up with some back-squat singles.

very impressive numbers Dan!
bwt=155

really suck getting under the push jerk so most looked more like push presses.
I think the numbers would have been higher if i had been in a place where I could drop the weight. The gym I was at today doesn't have a platform or bumper plates.

Well done Dan S.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American brothers and sisters. Thanks to everyone in getting Crossfit out there and making it available.

WOD
135-145-155-165-175-185-195-200-205-185

Kept things relatively light. Could have started heavier, and finished a little heavier. Surprised how snappy the weights went up, given the kind of day I had.

Good Eating all!

Haven't quite got these movements yet. Knocked hell out of my chin on one of the push jerks. Spent the rest of the day seriously falling off the Zone wagon.

Thanks for my family, CrossFit, our servicemen & women in harm's way, this great country, and for all that we behold on this green earth.

As RXed.

65-85-105-115-125-135-140-145-150-150(F on PP)-150

Did a few C&Js after, too:
160-170F-170(PR)-175F-175(PR)

i think my form on the press and jerks was sound, as were the cleans. In fact, today i actually did proper squat cleans for all the lifts instead of slacking with power cleans.

New PR on push press (up from 130#). Not lifting giant weights yet, but happy to see some progress.

Never did push jerk before. Caused me a little trouble towards the end.

1. 95lbs as rx'd
2. 100lbs as rx'd
3. 105lbs as rx'd
4. 110lbs as rx'd
5. 115lbs as rx'd
6. 120lbs as rx'd
7. 125lbs as rx'd
8. 130lbs as rx'd
9. 135lbs as rx'd (form a bit sloppy on the Push Jerk and Split Jerk)
10. 140lbs failed on the Push Jerk and had to ground the weight.
11. 140lbs just a clean and split jerk
12. 145lbs just a squat clean
13. 150lbs not quite a squat clean so I decided to stop there.

Then max effort pullups: 16. They were kipping but the kipping was limited. My pullup bar is so low that my knees are only a couple inches off the floor at dead hang. I'm not 100% certain but I think 16 is a PR for me. I'll have to check.

Then max effort ring dips: 10. I still suck at these.

Then a couple l-sits to finish.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the US crossfitters and their families. I'm Canadian and we have Turkey Day in October so it's already over and done with for us.

Comment #106 - Posted by: DaNewf at November 24, 2005 7:58 PM

Couldn't get near a gym today, so ran 5k home with gradual hills to keep it nice and hard. Tomorrow I will do this WOD, as Sat and Sun will be all day seminars followed by sparring; those will be my 'rest' days.

Comment #107 - Posted by: pwoodruff at November 24, 2005 8:25 PM

GM, Thanks! Can't wait to try that one.

As RX'd: 95, 95, 115, 115, 115, 125, 125, 125, 135, 135.

At first I thought I'd have to do something else as my right shoulder really hurt and felt weaker than normal on the first push press. I ended up doing a bunch of cleans, steadily increasing weight from 95 to 145. At the end my shoulder started to feel fine so I decided to do the WOD as RX'd.

I'm glad I did as I found it to be very instructive. I haven't done many of these lifts yet, so I've been a little apprehensive about trying anything more complex than a clean or dead lift. Today was the first time I really felt that I was getting the clean done properly. The first time I hit it correctly I startled myself with how fast the bar came up (I thought it was going to hit me in the chin).

Anyone else find the pushpress harder than either of the jerks? I found both jerks to be much easier as I only had to get the bar weightless and then push myself down underneath and catch it as opposed to having to actually push the bar higher using my arms.

How do you all deal with lowering the bar. Is it ok to just drop it, or is this considered to be bad gym manners?? On the last few lifts I had a hard time lowering in a controlled manner after the final jerk. I ended up catching it at the juncture of my thigh and hip, but that kind of hurt.

Hope you enjoyed your turkey. Had mine last month as I'm Canadian. Cheers.

My back is real cranky from sitting so many hours at work, so it was high rep kb swings in place of the WOD:

1000 36# kb swings, 500 per hand. As per Steve Cotter's 07-27-05 idea on the Dragondoor forum.

200 in 4:38 with 2 minute rest
200 in 4:55 with 2 minute rest
200 in 4:44 with 1 minute rest
300 in 7:41 with 1 minute rest
100 in 2:23

All done in groups of 25 reps per hand, no chalk .

Total time including rests = 30:21

Need to work the 52# bell the next time.

Behind in posting.

All with kettlebells. 1 clean, push press, push jerk, split jerk.
3 sets w/ 2 24kgs (1.5 pood)
3 sets w/ 2 28kgs (1.75 pood)
3 sets w/ 2 32kgs (2 pood)
1 set on each side w/ 1 40kg

Lowering the weight to the clean position adds something over the BB but limits the weight. I could get the 40 up there but bringing it down was tough.

Later in the day did 3x10 ring pushups and 6 20 second static holds on rings.
