Any suggestions for a sub to the double unders??

Comment #1 - Posted by: mp at September 6, 2005 7:01 PM

I'd say perhaps squat jumps would be decent enough...this looks killer, I can't wait! :D

Comment #2 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at September 6, 2005 7:03 PM

What is a suitable sub for Double-unders?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Adrian D at September 6, 2005 7:27 PM

Disregard the questions in the comments for yesterday, I posted it on the wrong day. Sorry.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Adrian D at September 6, 2005 7:28 PM

Never meet "Annie" before ,this looks like fun.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Fi at September 6, 2005 8:02 PM

24" box jumps are an alright sub for double unders. I have also heard about 3x regular jump rope skips (2x is just too easy).

Comment #6 - Posted by: J Jones at September 6, 2005 8:39 PM

I see Burpees are a sub for Double-unders. Tomorrow is going to be really interesting.

Comment #7 - Posted by: Adrian D at September 6, 2005 8:40 PM

i think it would be worth it to pain through learning how to do double unders (if that's the case above). a friend and i went out earlier this fall and just went at it until we were capable of doing 20 consecutive double unders. we couldn't walk the next day, but we now have the coordination to do them. just a suggestion.

Comment #8 - Posted by: TommyT at September 6, 2005 8:52 PM

I own the computer from he** and I am unable to view the videos. I am able to see the slide shows, but the 'double under' only has a video. Can someone describe a double under, please?

Comment #9 - Posted by: Skip at September 6, 2005 9:02 PM

Skip,

DU is like a regular jump rope but take the roupe around twice per jump. Rumor has it the height of the jump is not the key, rather speed of the rope. I have yet to get more than 3 in a row (newbie) so check for other answers.

Thanks for the link to the sit-up technique article, just the very day I was wondering about it !

Comment #13 - Posted by: Stephen R at September 7, 2005 12:37 AM

as rxed
13 minutes ish based on clock on the wall. DU were easy as I skip well. The trick is rope speed and hand/eye conordiantion. I can usually get 20 plus in a row. I find a good rhythn is a DU, regualr skip DU. That what I did today. Next time I'll go for the faster tougher option of straight DU Situps are still a struggle but getting better. I do them unanchored.

double unders and situps unbroken
forgot to start the timer so unsure of time.
estimated that it would be around the 8 minute mark.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Stephen R at September 7, 2005 3:01 AM

13:06 just DU's...all single reps (still working on rope coordination)

I guess I was using my "selective reading" trait since I mis read and didnt see sit-ups. Guess I'll be back in gym tonight

12:13. Double unders are funny, sometimes I could get 20 in a row sometimes I could only get 10 sets of 2 in a row.

Had rugby last night until 9, then workout at 6 this morning. Legs were tired, but tried to do continuous DU's. I have the rhythm just not the energy in my legs today to keep up with it. Good workout though, could be better. I'm just getting bcak into the swing of things and getting up at 5:15 isn't easy for me yet. Another shout out to the Macklroy for showing up bright and early before work with me. Getting large and in charge. Smoke you like cheap crack.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Chris Forbis at September 7, 2005 5:14 AM

~14min. Did double number of single unders plus ten double unders per set. Working on it!

Instead of straight situps, did the following:

50 crunches
50 oblique crunches - 25 per side
30 leg lifts
20 crunch/leg lifts
10 lef lifts

Comment #23 - Posted by: John W. at September 7, 2005 5:32 AM

As RXed.

Total time: 15:44

R1: 2:55, 1:58; total: 4:53
R2: 2:41, 1:46; total: 4:27
R3: 1:51, 1:23; total: 3:14
R4: 1:10, 0:55; total: 2:05
R5: 0:40, 0:26; total: 1:06

Added 400m run aftewards: 2:15

Felt about as coordinated as a 2-year old on the DUs. Most of them were 2s and 3s, sometimes 1s. Managed 4 - 8 in a row a few times, but rarely.

SUs all unbroken, but not pretty, to say the least.

A bit disappointed with the time. Hoped to do this a bit faster.

Was in a bit of a masochistic mood, so after resting for a minute went for a 400m run. That was not fun. Glad i did it, though. Hoped for sub-2 minutes. Perhaps next time.

wu: mod cfwu (squat, sit-up, back extension, pushup, 10 reps all; 100xsingle under) x 2
wod: time 9:46
after first set of attempted double-unders turned into an abortion, subbed 4xsingle-unders per double under-still not exactly the same, sit-ups all unbroken on gradually increasing incline, tried to maintain 1/second
finished with double-under practice, could only get sets of 2, will continue to work
wall-walking x 10 sets, L-sit practice 4x10 second sets

3X jumps instead of double-unders

Comment #27 - Posted by: preacher at September 7, 2005 6:13 AM

I can't perform more that a single double under without getting all mangled up in the rope. I need practice (which I will be doing). I therefore thought of doing a 'short rope' version of the single jump (using a rope that is as long as I am high).

Can't do double unders so subbed DU's and did squats and pushups.

18:50 - can't find any of my jumpropes; must be packed away in a box somewhere. Did 52# kb snatches until I tore off a callous (rep 8 of the 30 rep round), finished with 52# kb swings to forehead height. Anchored situps.

Comment #33 - Posted by: kelly moore at September 7, 2005 7:07 AM

13:08 as rx'd. Got a better rhythm with the jump-rope this time.

Comment #34 - Posted by: David B. at September 7, 2005 7:09 AM

I tried this workout this morning when I got up, but soon realized my body wasn't awake enough to do something that required that much coordination. I tried again after work with more success. It was my first attempt at double unders and I have red welts up and down my arms to prove it. I finally got the alternating rhythm down as was able to make it through ten in a row

Comment #35 - Posted by: Hilary at September 7, 2005 7:11 AM

First WOD.

19:36
Too long away from the rope, clumsy on DUs so I mixed Singles and DUs, and did twice as many.
100/80/60/40/20

Situps - counting error on the 40 set, added a set of 20. 50-30-20-20-20-10

cfwu x3

WOD: 16:15

double unders were almost all singles, and i didnt count misses (although i started cursing like a sailor when it hit the back of my head). situps were on an improvised abmat...good stuff. id actually been adding a posterior chain extension to my situps during the warmup but i like this a lot more...i look like less of a freak.

Comment #43 - Posted by: ediddy at September 7, 2005 8:13 AM

7:47. Spent 20 minute warmup trying to get coordination for DUs. Workout went pretty quick once I had those down to some extent.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Mel Jenkins at September 7, 2005 8:22 AM

13:02...I think this is the about the first WOD I"ve ever done as rx'd unbroken. double unders to about 35 then skipped a beat every time, 30 and under was no problem; but fineshed the sets with no rest except to walk to the sit up bench.

started by practicing DU's. Think I got one or two after multiple attempts
subbed singles 2x- I think you're right about it being too easy- need to do 3x singles if still can't do DU's next time
Thanks for the ab article- it answered a lot of questions I had.

My complete inability to do double-unders has always driven me away from Angie, but today I took her on, sub'd 3 regular rope jumps/DU for a total time of 7:40.

Then spent another 10 minutes trying to get DUs again - still can't do 'em, although more of my failures were landing on the rope than last time (as opposed to whacking myself in the shins, which was still most of my attempts).

Aw well, maybe next time...

As Rx'd 11:14
Warmed up with Russian situps using 35lb dumbell, 5lb DB swimmers, boot strappers, and KB rotating deadlifts. Then performed a 1.5pood KB snatch ladder for 5-10-15-20-25. Last set was broken as I felt the callouses beginning to rip from my hands. Getting ready for the upcoming RKC cert which requires me to snatch the 1.5pood 32x each arm nonstop. i am there but I want a little insurance. Snatches drained me so the double-unders were sloppy. Wanted to try the WOD with burpees but too fatigued. Felt great though. Can't wait for tomorrow's WOD.

Did the sit-ups unanchored on the floor.
Used a BOA jump rope for DU.

Coordination was a problem; all du's completed but had to interpose a single between each du to keep a rhythm. Could only max at 12 before tripping then started again.

Sit ups unbroken.

cfwu x 3, no sit-ups. Back extensions done using perpendicular bench at hips and weight bar on smith rack to hold legs. WOD Sit ups were done on BOSU half ball instead of my abmat (see earlier post) First set of DU's was broken at 20. Second set of sit-ups were broken at 25. All other sets were continuous. Subbed crunches for sit-ups (wuss!). After trying the 1st 15 "ab-mat" style with a rolled up towel, I knew I would not be able to sustain any kind of intensity. It looks like ab-mat sit-ups will go in my warm-up until I can crank them out at a decent rate.

Wife:

w/ 3x singles, anchored sit-ups, & 25 box jumps at the end to make up for a portion of the singles instead of doubles...Made several ugly attempts at doubles and will continue to work on them.

Corey,
Check out the CFJournal article from May 2005 entitled, "Working Wounded" and keep up with the Zone. The article describes a situation with a "disabled right leg." Even though your situation is with your arms, this still might give you some good ideas for redesigning workouts. Then, no reason to stop the Zone...

Heal well and quickly!

All double-unders were unfortunately single rep's.. On the last ten i think i caught sight of what it will take to do multiple double-unders. In any case, it was still a good workout. I fear something dreadfully hardcore tomorrow

12:23 was the total time...but as i was posting this i realized i only did 50,40,30,20

I did plenty of singles in addition to the double unders but I didn't count them. Its been a while since I've done any skipping but towards the end I was able to string together 5-7 double unders in a row.

I did regular floor situps. I anchored my feet by gripping a medicine ball with my ankles.

Comment #98 - Posted by: DaNewf at September 7, 2005 4:15 PM

Still looking for a decent rope that is long enough for me (6'4")...so sub'd 20" BJ. Situps were AbMat style with rolled up towel.

First workout after a long (1.5 week) vacation, during which time I did not work out and ate more or less continuously. Felt it. 12:21, including an utterly embarrassing first set of double-unders during which I strung no more than two together. Subsequent sets were much better. Met Pukie's little brother, BileBurpie. Closest I've come to meeting the green-faced clown in months.

Plus still totally stymied at the bar muscle-up. Argh!!

50-40-30-20 and10 rep rounds of:
Double-unders - all sets broken
Sit-ups (Glute-Ham Sit-ups) - 50, 20/10/10, 30, 20, 10

TIME: 20:02

I have a "Love-Hate" relationship with Double-unders. Mostly I suck at 'em, but when, in that rare moment of jump-rope grace, I string together a bunch, I feel like freakin' Rocky :)

Suddenly from 30 on I just started hitting them perfect. If i hadn't of this would have taken me at least 30 minutes. I think next time I could cut this by 3/4 and finish in
around 6 or 7 min.

GH situps are situps using a Glute Ham machine, which is a sort of back extension on steroids, but if you turn over, your legs are locked in, straight, and butt supported, but you get greater ROM because your back can flex towards the deck more, a bit harder than regular situps. I believe there is a video in the exercises page.

Comment #153 - Posted by: Lino at September 8, 2005 5:40 AM

I took about two weeks off because of the start of grad school, and man oh man do I ever regret it.
My attempts at double unders were painful (lots of welts, using a speed rope)and I think I may have done it once? I doubled the jumps and did the situps on the ancient decaying wood platform in the park (it has a bar to anchor the feet).

That being said, ~18 min, used my cell to time since forgot my watch (but I actually did the CF WU 3x, which usually smokes me. My bands for the pullups should be here today)

Thanks for keeping me humble

My HR monitor says I got up to 220BPM during a string of ten DU's at the end of the "40" set, but I think it was just a gadget glitch with the HR monitor.
