"Tabata Something Else"

Complete 32 intervals of 20 seconds of work followed by ten seconds of rest where the first 8 intervals are pull-ups, the second 8 are push-ups, the third 8 intervals are sit-ups, and finally, the last 8 intervals are squats. There is no rest between exercises.

Post total reps from all 32 intervals to comments.

Compare to 050531.

How convenient that I planned a few days rest....though I can't wait to pick this one up once I get back!

O.K. I'm totally confused on this one. Can someone explain this in english??

Comment #3 - Posted by: SethO at September 2, 2005 6:12 PM

From Lynne's excellent Crossfit FAQ:

2.1. What's a Tabata?

For twenty seconds do as many reps of the assigned exercse as you can - then rest 10 seconds.
Repeat this seven more times for a total of 8 intervals, 4 minutes total exercise.
The score is the least number of reps for any of the eight intervals.

This is the study ... "Metabolic profile of high intensity intermittent exercises" http://tinyurl.com/dhj72

Comment #4 - Posted by: Tom Needham at September 2, 2005 6:13 PM

Damon - Do as many pull-ups as you can for 20 seconds, then rest 10 seconds. Repeat until you've done this for 8 sets (intervals). Then do as many push-ups as you can for 20 seconds, rest 10 seconds. Repeat for 8 set. Continue this way with sit-ups and squats.

At the end, lay on the ground and beg for mercy, while trying to keep from puking. Next, ponder how 16 minutes can hurt so much, and why you are having a hard time catching your breath.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Matt G. at September 2, 2005 6:42 PM

I thought you do 20 sec of each exercise then rest 10 secs for total of 8 sets. It says no rest between exercises. So wouldn't you do all the exercises then rest?

Comment #9 - Posted by: kathryn at September 2, 2005 6:57 PM

Comment #10 - Posted by: kathryn at September 2, 2005 6:57 PM

no rest between exercises as in after the 10s rest for the 8th set of pullups, jump right into the first set of pushups. 10s rest between intervals but no extra rest between exercises.

Comment #11 - Posted by: ediddy at September 2, 2005 7:22 PM

I've started a new mesocycle that I will be on for the next 9 weeks to get ready for the upcoming season. Thanks CrossFit for changing my whole way of thinking about strength, power, and overall fitness! See you guys in a few months!

Comment #14 - Posted by: Jon at September 2, 2005 8:24 PM

Part of the confusion comes from folks remembering that in 'Tabata This' there's a one minute rest between exercises. In 'Tabata Something Else' there isn't, you work straight through all four exercises.

London CrossFitters, WOW! Great turnout, looks like y'all got some!

Comment #15 - Posted by: RossB at September 2, 2005 9:11 PM

Are you supposed to be squatting with a bar or just body weight? Does it matter?

Comment #16 - Posted by: A.M. at September 2, 2005 9:44 PM

A.M., bodyweight is best, and yes, if you want to live! Could use bar, but the tabata thing doesn't need it to do its work. I think.

What fun. Pull-ups killed me (3). Sub'd bench press w/ 95lb for pushups (7), sit-ups (23) and squats (12).

Decided to do calf raises Tabata style at the end. That really hurt. 18 was the lowest.

Graham, I'll give you a run for your money when it comes to scary eyes. Ye Gods! I really need to get my haircut as well (black t-shirt, second row behind Andrew and Steve). Dangerously close to bouffant.

On a more serious note the seminar conducted by Steve was nothing short of excellent. As good as the technical bits were (and they were superb), it was the combination of self discipline and FUN that made it such a pleasure to attend; of meeting like minded people who care passionately about the capacities of the human body and the expression that exercise/training/sport allows it.
I am far too rarely among people who speak my language, despite working at present in the fitness industry (of course, after some of my jokes in the bar afterwards many members of Crossfit London must wonder if there is ANYONE who speaks my language). It was such a great chance to meet and chat to people from so many different backgrounds with a shared passion for this nonsense.

Steve (Seapker) mentioned as an aside that he tends to leave Crossfit events with about ten different suggestions for books to read on all sorts of subjects. I think the point I'm making badly here is that the concept of 'community' that is bandied about, as in 'Crossfit Community' is no mere truism - it is a value that arises organically through gathering so many intelligent and engaging people together in one place - whether that place be physical as in a gym or a virtual space - and comparing notes and sharing something of themselves. It creates a total greater than the sum of it's parts. I'm proud to be a part of it, even if only on the periphery. See you all at the next one.

pretty disappointed w/ squats...lower total this time by 3. i did have a better ROM on them this time, but i reverted to a quad-centric squat despite having spent time working on engaging my posterior chain. i forsee more squat work in my future.

Didn't (couldn't) count reps. All I know is that my last few sets of pulls were all jumping, and my last few sets of pushups were on my knees (that last admission really hurts). Completed the sets of sit-ups (on an ab-mat) and squats, but not for high-reps.

Performed at 11:00am with the entire massively hung over logging crew jeering, smoking and drinking beers and chucking the empties at me. Then was upstaged by a command pilot, who with cigarette in mouth the entire time, ripped off 15 ring pullups while being fed beer by a rigger.

383... almost 200 better than before..BUT..

I went 8 consecutive 1min rounds of each xercise.
I know.....
But last time I literally shut down in the 3rd and 4th rounds in pullups, pushups an to a lesser degree sit-ups... lot's of waiting to do 1 or 2 more reps.
Ths time I could obviously do much more work in the 16min (still sht down a bit).. but at the expense of a more muscular endurance challenge.
Next time I'll try to equal 383 with 2 consecutive 2 min rounds etc...

Last time I got 488 (475 before that). I did a lot better on pullups this time, but lost some ground in the other areas. Probably because I was trying to 'sell out' everything I had in the begining. I had done some round robin grappling (Shootfighting) right before this so that might have sucked hurt me as well. . . I know, I know - I am just making excuses for not breaking 500. I probably would have tried harder if I had set the goal before starting.

Bill, Erik, Jon, you I know you are watching. . . You better get off your lazy arses.

First time ever doing a "tabata" workout.

Pullups
9,6,3,4,3,3,3,4 = 35
Pushups
24,19,12,11,10,8,9,10 = 103
Situps
8,10,12,15,11,10,12,12 = 90
Squats
15,18,18,15,16,15,15,17 = 129

Total reps: 357

My workout room is pretty small so I lost a couple of reps on the situps and squats moving my situp bench around.

That was a pretty brutal 16 minutes but since I was constantly watching the clock trying to squeeze in another rep it seemed to go really fast.

1st WOD in a bit. Been laying off for a week and a half to let my joints and muscles get to where they didn't hurt all the time.

The problem with this was that as bad as it felt during the workout, it stayed bad for about 15 minutes after I was through. Laid on the floor for a bit and my legs really started to hurt, almost cramping. THEN I met Pukie's little brother; no marshmallows came up, though. I was proud of that.

Pullups assisted after 2nd round.

I got completely smoked on this one. I wasn't feeling energetic at all. Maybe it's my diet (decided to go back to Zone today). Maybe it's the midnight shift (our new Chief is a complete nimrod and has decided we're all going back to rotating shifts even though for FIVE YEARS we were on a permanent shift).

Anyway, my score was 72. My pull-ups had to go to negatives after maybe the second go 'round.

Best score on PU:11
Score on Push-ups: 18
Sit-ups (more like crunches because I was on concrete): 23
Squats: 20

Comment #150 - Posted by: Kris at September 4, 2005 4:45 PM

Well I'm a fool, I thought your score was based off of your worst interval, ala FGB, not your total so I paced myself. In turn all I ended up doing was holding myself back and getting a crappy total.
Pull 8/8/8/6/6/6/6/6 = 54
Push 10/8/8/8/8/8/8/8 = 66
Sit 10/10/10/10/9/8/8/8 = 73
Squat 14/15/13/14/13/13/13/16 = 110
Grand Total = 303 pathetic

pullups (on 2 in. bar; kipped):
12/10/7/5/5/5/4/4 = 52
pushups (each nearly full ROM, on rings about 6 in. from ground, feet on ground):
7/7/6/5/6/5/4/4 = 44
situps (unanchored, flat back, hands crossed in front but flailing at end):
9/8/7/6/6/6/6/6 = 54

pretty bad, but there it is.
ring pushups are hard!
homemade rings are pretty cool.
finished with some supports on rings with short L-sits (still not parallel to ground, although I can do this on parallettes)/knee-tucks

Back to my half volume week, score 257 for 4 rounds of each. Pushups were rough, since I did the 150 ring dips WOD just yesterday. Then, I hopped in the car and drove 6 hr home...

Done 9/5/2005 am
Pullups score (F)
Press up score (7), 150 dips yesterday didn't help
sit up score (13)

So this was my first time doing anything off this site and I have to alter things a bit (1 cuz I'm new 2 cuz I have nowhere to do a pull up). But I did about 20 sets of 6 of everything but pull-ups. I don't know if that's good but I was pretty proud of myself.
