Oh sweet agony. Painstorm was awesome. Can't wait to do it again!

Comment #2 - Posted by: Ronnie at August 10, 2005 8:05 PM

Strange, I'm always the 3rd poster...

Comment #3 - Posted by: Eric '07 at August 10, 2005 8:21 PM

I never lifted weights before. Not even for football. Always believed that all you needed was push-ups, dips and running. I must admit, I find myself getting more and more into Olypmic Lifting. I seriously need to work on my form, but I get excited about the workouts and the gains they provide! If anybody knows of some classes or workshops around the L.A., Ventura area please let me know. Thanks and keep it up!

Comment #4 - Posted by: DJ at August 10, 2005 8:24 PM

anyone know of any olympic weightlifting classes/trainers/coaches in the Bay Area--Oakland or SF???

Was looking at the picture.... It clearly worth a thousand words "were still in the fight brother, but we think about you every minutes you may rest in peace soldier for we shall see each other again"

WARRIOR CODE
Honor,Courage, loyalty, dedication and self sacrifice....those are things that can't be thought let alone be replace,

For those who doubted you or are complaining for having a bad day at the office... I say, you may remain silent forever or bow down and say thank you with tears in your eyes.

P.S. As it is impossible for you to stay safe, I'll say stay together...

All numbers in kg. BWT is 70kg. The last one I had one inch from full extension, can I count it as good?

Also went to mixed grip at 120kg, before that all sets were pronated grip.

Comment #12 - Posted by: adrian at August 11, 2005 3:46 AM

What is target weight? if any? should i be maxing each set?

Comment #13 - Posted by: David at August 11, 2005 4:42 AM

Ididn't feel like DLs today so I did 5MUs each followed by a "Farmer" with 80# DBS.. Picking up the DBs is a DL anyway ON the last set of MUs I was able to do a Double or 2 consecutive MUs so I was happy with that effort. I had pulled a calf muscle last week so I didnt want to do the heavy DLs today

Comment #14 - Posted by: dave k at August 11, 2005 5:02 AM

regarding yesterday's posts, what is a pistol?

Comment #23 - Posted by: paul at August 11, 2005 6:19 AM

Unable to do WOD. Just popped the cartilage in my ribs last night buring BJJ. Going to let it rest for a couple of days then ease back into the WOD. Hope it doesn't take too long. Still have the RKC cert at the end of Sept.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Ben E. at August 11, 2005 6:38 AM

David-
This is an ME day. Each set should be the highest weight you can do. I usually start with one I know I can do 3 reps of, then based on performance on that set, adjust for the next set. Then repeat the process.

I'm on Coach Rut's ME program and today was back squat day. Did the 3-2-2-2-1-1-1-1-1 protocol, topping out at 180lbs, which is just over BW and I believe a PR.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Chris Forbis at August 11, 2005 7:07 AM

Beltless trap bar deadlifts:

185x3
205x2
225x2
245x2
265x1
285x1
295x1
315x1
330xmiss - moved about an inch off the floor; I was definitely not in the right position to finish the pull.

While I duplicated my efforts from 050719 (right down to the 330 miss), I'm still pleased with today's results. My lower back, lats, hands, grip and the outside of knees are very sore from dancing with both Mary and Cindy yesterday, and I am just plain tired.

I am finding the trap bar to be easier to deadlift for reps and much harder to deadlift for max singles than a straight bar. At least now I'm consistently breaking 300 with the trap bar.

Comment #26 - Posted by: kelly moore at August 11, 2005 7:14 AM

Paul,

Pistol is just another word for one-legged squat.

Curious what everyone's rest times are between sets? I have been doing 1-2 minute rests. Looking forward to it this afternoon.

Comment #27 - Posted by: allen yeh at August 11, 2005 7:15 AM

Paul,

A pistol is a one legged squat.

Comment #28 - Posted by: kelly moore at August 11, 2005 7:16 AM

So last night I had a dream that I was doing an ungodly number of pullups... is this a good sign or a bad sign? Any dream interpreters here?

Have to get a photo of this bar, looks like a backpackers rucksack with all the extra's hanging off it. Will find a better equipped gym next time this comes up.

Then did PushPress ME WOD

All good today,

I really need to get a belt, I can handle this weight but I know my back will be sore tomorrow. I have good form (I have been doind olympic style lifting for 11yrs) so it is not that. I think I just need some extra support.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Manny P at August 11, 2005 7:37 AM

horrible performance

45 X 3
95 X 2
135 X 2
225 X 2
315
405
475 (miss)
475 (miss)
455 (miss)

So disgusted by performance that I finished with 425 for five sets of singles.

Back in the day, I competed in powerlifting...so I know I can put a belt on or do assistance work and immediately have much higher deadlifts....but that would take me down the road to being a powerlifter instead of a crossfiter....damn ego.

Comment #32 - Posted by: paulw at August 11, 2005 8:01 AM

Personal best for me: a max single of 335lbs. It's been so long since I deadlifted that I've forgotten how to grind. I've no doubt that if I practised Power to the People for a month that'd jump up to 350lbs, easily. Previous personal best was 315lbs.

All weights in kg.

Bodyweight=70kg

3x94 (used hook grip here)
2x104 (switched to mixed grip)
2x114
2x124 PR
1x130 (Fail, my grip was weak and I rested on my thighs)
1x126 PR (beat my previous PR by 6kg or 13 pounds !!!)
1x124
1x124
1x124

Since my grip was weak, I decided to add grip specific work into my 'specification program' (which currently consists of broomstick overhead squats and L-sits) that I will be doing before/after my workout, depending on the type of workout and how grip-specific it is.

I believe that if I improve my grip 300lbs is going to fly up, garantueed. Well, on to the next deadlift workout ;-)

Comment #42 - Posted by: David at August 11, 2005 9:26 AM

I don't have heavy weights at my home, I do have access to a gym normally at my university but the gym there is closed for a few weeks so I can't go there, so instead, I did one of the CrossPit workouts.

Today I doubled up, with Cindy as a "warmup", so after recovering (kinda) from her, I did a modified deadlift day. Instead of going for max weight, I worked on form. (After all those squats, my deadlifts were not exactly the strongest today!)

Started at BW (175) x7, worked up by 10-pound increments to a max of 3 singles at 245. Trying to keep my back straight, get the legs driving and not lift with my back, all that good stuff. Didn't feel too bad, looked better in the mirror.

I need to get me to a seminar some time and really get some good coaching on form for these things...

Anyway, that's all.

pretty sore from Cindy but i finally got three big wheels on each side up. not too happy with my form, though...when the weight gets heavy, i raise my hips too early and then kind of good morning the weight up. i need to get that under control before i start my work towards 4 wheels/2xBWT. squat work later.

Something I noticed (again) is how much mindset plays in these lifts. Right before my two fails, my son called me and needed something. Nothing important but it was a distraction. I also caught myself thinking the word "can't" right then too. I CAN do this stuff. It is my mental games that get in the way and needs the most work - even more than my grip.

Comment #54 - Posted by: beth at August 11, 2005 11:18 AM

I've been a month behind but the workout finally coincided, so maybe I'll try to jump back on schedule! I stayed below my max because of some recent back pain- didn't want to exacerbate it.

345-2
355-1

370-1 (fail)
370-1

Beat max effort on previous WOD by 5#. Started heavier and made fewer misses so the total volume went up a lot.

The fail was hard. Barely budged it and had some kind of adrenal rush right after I let go of the bar that had me buzzing head to toe for about five seconds. Thought I was going to fall over. Waited about four minutes and completed the lift. Have to say it's much easier on you physically to succeed than to fail. So, piece of advice for everyone out there: Don't miss!

Does anyone have any advice, either here or in the forums about the logistics of installing a 6 ft Thai banana bag in a garage (with the standard weak 2x4 beams). Should I install additional beams? Not even try? Buy a free-standing thing for the bag? Am I going to ruin the garage? Kill myself? Any suggestions?

Looking forward to (hopefully) beating my deadlift pr (230lbs; bw: 170lbs) today!

Would you all do today's WOD if you had a first degree strain of the semitenidosus muscle? Its the inner hamstring thats stretched when you are doing squats with a wider than shoulder width stance. it happened on monday and is still store yet i was still about to complete (and improve my score) on yesterdays WOD. Mainly by keeping my knees/legs parallel.

May need to get comfortable with the hook grip. These failures were not grip limited this time, but I definitely see that as an issue.

Beth, I can appreciate your comments about keeping a focus while lifting. I have seen how kids and various other distraction get in the way of performing well. The importance is that we stay safe and know when to stop a lift because we're not focused. Thanks for the reminder.

Eray,

I'd be reluctant to put a very heavy bag into 2x4s, but hey, I am no expert in the matter. I have hung heavy bags into floor joyces, which are 2x8. When I still have reservations about their strength to support the bag, I have screwed a 2x10 board flat against the ends of two floor joyces, and mounted the bag into the middle of the 2x10. This evened the load between two joyces.

I have a friend who has a VERY heavy sand bag that is about 6 ft long(weighs a ton). He shoots in on it and clinches it low and stands up with it. Great for explosive strength, but with the heavy weight he had to mount it to a free standing bracket, anchored to the floor. That might be your best bet.

Cheers!

I've been watching the CF site for a few weeks, building form and courage. I've even built myself a pull-up station/torture device in the backyard. I was all prepared to do the WOD yesterday, but I got sick last night. I was unwilling to let Cindy go without a fight so took her out today...first WOD ever...12 rounds as RX'd. Cindy brought her little brother Pukie along too. My neighbor came over a about the 10 minute mark to ask if something was wrong...I just smiled and turned up the Godsmack. Tomorrow morning I'll go to the gym and punish myself with todays WOD.

Had a serious talk with the lower back about deadlifts. It said to wait until tomorrow and a good hamstring/glut stretch, then maybe.
So, I did farmer's walks after Cindy instead.

Hot, nasty, humid day, hard work all day, no energy..but what the hell, I thought.

I actually started with some good energy, perked right up (must be my love of the deadlift). Dropped pretty quick, though:

185#-3
235#-2
285#-2
305#-2
315#-1
325#-1
330#-1 (new PR..form a bit shaky)
after that, I decided to drop down, I'd rather not get hurt..but then my form fell apart on 320#, so I dropped to 305# for my final rep, and called it quit at four singles....I probably increased too fast in the first few sets, but all in all, it was still fun!!

Eray, To hang your bag

Use something to cross about 4 of the 2x4s and mount the bag on that. If the 2x4s are exposed you can just put a 2x6 across 4 of them and hang your bag with a chain or rope over that. If the 2x4s have drywall covering you can pre drill and use washers and 3.5"x1/4" lag bolts to mount a metal braket that will cross several joists. I have a 100lb heavy bag mounted in my garage, I have 2x6 joists but used a metal braket I made out of 2 pieces of angle iron for mounting, drilled holes crossed 4 of the joists. I can hang on the bag and I weigh 188lbs

johnmcc-- yeah, the machine is cheating, because it limits useable, real world strength gains

DJ-- belts, straps and wraps while allowing you to lift more weight easier actually retard usable strength and leave you more prone to injury during real life strength needs

A 1 rep PR isn't really the main goal here, it is the improved work capacity that you are building through this lift.
IMHO, just as Chris Forbes suggested, after a warm up, it is good to start heavy for 3 and go heavier.. you may not hit your one rep max, but you will have lifted an impressive amount of total weight by starting heavy. and an improved work capacity is very usable "out there"

Jim-Thanks, It makes more since now. I started light and worked my way up looking to warm more and see how far I could go. I know now I was doing it wrong and what you said about usable weight makes more since! Tyanks again.

Crapped out after this--couldn't pull the bar off the floor for 350, even though I can SLDL 300x5. My inital drive is really weak, but once I get it to my knee I can basically pull from there using my hams and back...any advice on that initial drive? I'm thinking it's a form problem more than anything else.

I also got VERY lightheaded after the last pull...this has never happened to me before, at least not like this. I felt like I was about to pass out.

Decided to give deadlifting a try with free weights now that I've started CF. Used to do them on the Smith Machine because it gave me more stability with my knees. Left weight at 225 to get form down (easier to do with good form on the Smith!)

225 for 4 sets. Kind of felt a little twing on the last one, so discretion being the better part of valor, I stopped these for now (see, getting older does make you somewhat smarter).

Switched to shrugs superset with hyperextentions. Went up from 265 up to 335 for my 1 rep sets.

It's been about 5 hours since lifting (sleep? who needs sleep?), and my back already feels like it was hit hard.
