Correction on the distance, it was a sprint distance not the half Ironman.

Comment #1 - Posted by: PFEIFER at August 8, 2005 7:08 PM

Still pretty impressive!! Congrats!!

Comment #2 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at August 8, 2005 7:20 PM

Damn impressive! Keep up the good work.

Comment #3 - Posted by: brian_g at August 8, 2005 7:30 PM

Congrats Pfeifer.

Comment #4 - Posted by: Tim J. at August 8, 2005 8:30 PM

Phil...how long have you been doing only the WOD? What kind of training did you do prior to that?

Comment #5 - Posted by: Suzanne at August 8, 2005 9:11 PM

Wow, way to go.

Comment #6 - Posted by: eva t. at August 8, 2005 9:12 PM

I have been doing the crossfit WOD for about a year, before that I mostly used freeweights in a bodybuilding split. Triathlon is a new challange that I am going to have to find time to train for so that I can complete the longer distance races.

Comment #7 - Posted by: PFEIFER at August 8, 2005 9:24 PM

Thumbs up.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Matthew Townsend at August 8, 2005 10:01 PM

nice work Pheifer!

Comment #9 - Posted by: Murph at August 8, 2005 10:10 PM

Awesome!

Comment #10 - Posted by: Andrea at August 8, 2005 10:43 PM

I don't think I can do a rest day tomorrow. I rested for two days in a row when I was at the Grand Canyon.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Kris at August 8, 2005 10:43 PM

Phillip,
That's awsome! It's great to see that this stuff is so effective! Did you do any running or swimming w/the WOD? Iwant to get the same results, but I dont have the weight lifting background that you do and find my self starting out slow.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Jay at August 8, 2005 11:10 PM

In another endurance event that maybe of interest to the crossfit community, a friend is hiking the entire 2650 miles Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. He is documenting his trip on the web with updates 2-3 times a week via satphone and laptop...a great adventure and interesting read... www.pct2005.com

Thats my boy. Crossfit Spokane is now on the map.I tell everyone here this guy is off the chain.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Dan Silver at August 9, 2005 2:20 AM

No rest for the wicked...you can sleep when you die.

0630 morning PT on pier (warm-up mostly), followed by a modified circuit consiting of elbow-to-knee (with a squat in the middle) four count(x15), boot-camp abs routine, and push-ups (shoulder width, wide, narrow) 20,5,1. Felt really good, need to push myself more. I was leading a group of limited duty folks. Does anyone have any ideas on some good workouts that a mostly low impact for someone with knee or back injuries?

Does the sprint Tri have a .5mi swim, 25mibike and 6.2mi run?

Comment #17 - Posted by: mooremi at August 9, 2005 5:03 AM

Congrats Pfeifer. My brother-in-law is a triathlete and has been introduced to CF by me. He uses some of the concepts and your results may get him doing more.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Will Hunter at August 9, 2005 5:04 AM

Hey Jeftyg, I plan on hiking the Appalachian Trail in April. I was all ready to go hike the AT this April, but a cute little latina threw a wrench in that plan. She's gone now, so it's back on! :P

I'll definitely be keeping up with your friends adventure. Thanks for posting the link.

Comment #19 - Posted by: Neil Eldridge at August 9, 2005 5:35 AM

Great work Phillip!

105# OH squats: 4/7/7/15! Finally made a solid 15 reps with this weight. The first sets felt terrible; balance was off and I couldn't get my shoulders positioned.

Still working on Crossfit Challenge #3. Only a few more pounds to go to match my current bodyweight. I will get it!

Comment #20 - Posted by: kelly moore at August 9, 2005 6:01 AM

Fantastic effort Phillip Pfeifer! Say that fast three times.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Steve HB at August 9, 2005 6:51 AM

I was surfing the CF site a few weeks ago and happened upon a picture of a girl with a lower leg cast climbing a rope. Can anybody direct to that picture again?

Comment #24 - Posted by: wally at August 9, 2005 8:48 AM

hey jeremy. how do you carry that bag? huggin' it, on your shoulder, switching it up, or what? I'm gonna start with a 60lb. pt log i made, so any tip will help.

Comment #25 - Posted by: paul at August 9, 2005 9:14 AM

I'm so inspired by all of the comments I have been reading on the site over the past two weeks.

I'm about to start doing WOD but will likely have to scale back as I put on lots of weight and lost some muscle while recovering from a massivley heurniated disk this past winter. Hey, at least I avoided surgery.

I've heard mention about Crossfit challenges but can't find them on the site. Can someone direct me? I'd like to use them to help establish goals to work towards.

Thanks for the inspiration everyone.

Jason

Comment #26 - Posted by: Jason at August 9, 2005 9:32 AM

Are rested days posted periodically ever 4th or 5th day, or what?

Comment #27 - Posted by: Ryan at August 9, 2005 9:52 AM

Hey guys.
New to crossfit. This pic brings up a question. Does the WOD ever include swimming?

Comment #28 - Posted by: Eric at August 9, 2005 10:00 AM

I haven't stopped by the site in a few days. You've gotta wonder about the demographic for a site that's got links up for Mistress Krista and Shivworks in the same week. Funnier still that I fit this demographic. :-)

Comment #29 - Posted by: Tom at August 9, 2005 10:09 AM

The crossfit challenges can be found here:

http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/trophy/CF-challenge.html

Comment #30 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at August 9, 2005 10:17 AM

All questions answered (more or less).

Wally - I found the pic of Lani here (I don't know html):

http://www.crossfit.com/mt-archive2/2005_06.html

(Friday 050617)

Paul - I have been carrying my bag any way possible, just no straps or handles. It usually ends up on my head, shoulders (switching periodically), and back (Quasimoto style). I have not been carrying it out in front. I could not carry 100lbs or more very far at all that way.

Jason - The most current challenges can be found here:

http://www.crossfit.com/discus/messages/25/25.html

The ones that Jesse posted are still around, but a little out of date.

Ryan - every 4th day (3 workouts, then rest)

Eric - Some WODs include swimming. But this is extremely rare do to the availability of pools for most people. This month's CrossFit Journal has a good portion of it devoted to swim training and CrossFit workouts using the pool. If you get a year subscription now, you will get this month's installment right when you order.

Comment #32 - Posted by: arob at August 9, 2005 11:28 AM

what's the best source for information on the mills that kelly moore does? thanks.

Comment #33 - Posted by: kevin o at August 9, 2005 12:44 PM

"Does the sprint Tri have a .5mi swim, 25mibike and 6.2mi run?"

Usually "sprints" are 750m swim, 20k bike, and 5k run. These are roughly one-half the distances of an Olympic distance tri.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Mike at August 9, 2005 12:52 PM

Some reading that I encountered while randomly looking into the world record for push-ups. It's a good read.
A quote: The Ulysses Factor by J.R.L. Anderson. It was the author's premise that "There is some factor in man, some form of special adaptation which prompts a few individuals to exploits which, however purposeless that they may seem, are of value to the survival of the race."
And the link: http://www.recordholders.org/en/list/ulysses.html

Whoops
I guess that only adds up to 140. I'll do 10 right now for good measure.

Comment #37 - Posted by: Tim S at August 9, 2005 2:04 PM

Kevin O,

Go to www.circularstrength.com and click on Olympic Clubbell Sport. It will provide video clips of the mill and swipe.

Comment #38 - Posted by: kelly moore at August 9, 2005 2:04 PM

Going to do some 56# WFD throws and maybe a little javelin. Might even run a little. I'm going out of town tommorrow for a week, but luckily the hotel I am staying at has a gym. Hopefully they have WiFi as well so that I can see the WOD's...

Comment #39 - Posted by: Jon at August 9, 2005 2:28 PM

Paul,
I made my sand bag out of a military duffel filled with 10# ziplock bags of sand, so I can adjust. I also made a few 5# bags. Today was my first go at the mile. I carried it one shoulder, switch shoulders, then both shoulders as needed to disperse the discomfort. I'm going to go up 5#'s at a time until I can't make the 15 minutes then train with that weight until I can and go up again. I agree with J Jones though the weight is too much to hold out in front for too long. No straps or handles. Good luck

Jeremy

all pullups broken, 16 unbroken pullups in the first set.

Comment #43 - Posted by: Allen Yeh at August 9, 2005 4:24 PM

NO swimming??

Did you grow up swimming competively? As a triathlete, I can't imagine not including pool time if for nothing else than to work on stroke technique. I even take the time to find an open swim from time to time to work out the difference in head postioning, etc.

I realize that as a former swim team coach & swimmer, and now a triathlete, I'm biased. Anyway, hats off to you coming out of the water. Did the rest of the race fair well? Swimming gets me a lead, the bike renders me even, and unfortunately the run brings the backs of my fellow competitors into my line of site.

By the way, been doing the WOD thing for about 3 - 4 months. Tremendous results.

BIG thanks to all.
-Fletch

Comment #44 - Posted by: Fletcher at August 9, 2005 7:27 PM

it finally happened. a guy at the gym says with a strange look on his face, "hey, you want me to hold your feet for you on your next set of pull ups?". i say, "no i am kipping on purpose". i don't think he believed me because he said, "well you are military and all (i had on an old brown bdu t-shirt/i am not in the military anymore)" then he paused and said, "i guess you know what you are doing". i do.

-why explain?

great job phillip

Comment #45 - Posted by: dan santini at August 9, 2005 7:50 PM

Nope no swimming, that was my weak leg for sure. I will be taking some tech. classes in swimming before I try that again. thanks all for the kind words and especially to Coach and lauren thanks for Crossfit.

Comment #46 - Posted by: PFEIFER at August 9, 2005 8:10 PM

No rest for the Wicked.

-D vs J Jones

Of course I had the home field advantage. We played around my yard for a while grunting introductions (cavemen that we are), then got down to working C & J technique.

With Dan's help I was able to FINALLY C & J my bodyweight! (about a 10 lb increase, and ugly as hell). I even went for 195 and power cleaned it, but couldn't get it to jerk.

One "New Year" resolution off the list. Now if I can just do it with some kind of 'form'.

I then challenged D- to a "dirtbag" race. I think he won because I had to put him down more than once. (Pictures are floating around somewhere).

Comment #47 - Posted by: J Jones at August 9, 2005 10:07 PM

Damn right, I won. Plus I got free beer and food.
