wow, this looks fun :-D

Comment #1 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at August 3, 2005 7:03 PM

So doubleunders are basically jump rope with two passes per jump, which would mean 35 jumps(+the times I hit my feet with the rope) right?

Comment #2 - Posted by: Justin L at August 3, 2005 7:06 PM

Great idea to link the exercise directly to the video in the WoD. I was going to suggest this before. Now all I have to do is to get you to write "Workout of the Day" at the top of the WoD, level with Pacific Time.

It would make it easier for the noobs.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Matthew Townsend at August 3, 2005 7:16 PM

Coach, that article is great. I want more!

Comment #4 - Posted by: russ greene at August 3, 2005 7:26 PM

Wonderful article!

Nothing had shown me in the past how true this is as well as martial arts training...that is until I found Olympic lifts.

The last of the article is saddening, and a bit maddening. Between work, school, WODs, family & martial arts...who can make time for the all important play? :)

Comment #5 - Posted by: kas at August 3, 2005 7:35 PM

The article first appeared in the CFJ (one of four articles this month). It is indeed a great piece of writing. It applies to trainers and trainees alike, in my opinion.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Mike Minium at August 3, 2005 8:06 PM

Ooooo, looks like fun...

BTW, I had a quick question. Is there anything on the site regarding benchmarks? i.e. what a "good" time is for a particular WOD, a "great" time, a "poor" time? Was just curious if there was any info on that stuff. Thanks!

Comment #7 - Posted by: Jon at August 3, 2005 8:07 PM

I read that article in the CFJ and thought it was great. Being a crossfit soloist and new to so much that we do, I am in the position, as I am sure others are, of being both the trainer and the novice. For us especially, that is an important piece of readin'. Thank you Coach.

Comment #8 - Posted by: JW at August 3, 2005 8:08 PM

Jon: the benchmarks are in the comments, every day. Pick the guy (or gal) you want to match. Go.

Justin: it doesn't *have* to be 35 jumps. I find I can get there (to 35) faster by alternating "regular" jumps (one pass) with "double-unders" (two passes). But yeah, you need at least 35 jumps per round.

Comment #9 - Posted by: davidjwood at August 3, 2005 8:12 PM

Wow, that was a great article. I coac beginners level gymnastics, and he could not have said it better. Basics and fundamentals are so important, and they will seperate the good from the great. Sadly, the sport of gymnastics has moved away from the ROV scoring system of the past. Today in gymnastics, the athlete can have a 10.0 "start value" for a routine. The skills and combinations of skills required to achieve that 10.0 start value are so complex, that we often see poor form and overall poor execution of skills. The rules have only gotten harder for the current year, and starting in 2006, an open ended scoring system will be put into effect. There will be no more "Perfect 10", which is the hallmark of our sport. This new system of scoring has such complex rules, that it will make even the die hardest fans confused, along with the athletes, their coaches and probably the judges.

Needless to say, these are sad times within the gym community right now. We hope and pray that the president of the International Federation of Gymnastique (FIG) knows what he is doing. Dozens of coaches and athletes and thousands of fans have spoken out in protest to the changes, but have not prevailed. Just thought i'd share.

Comment #10 - Posted by: jeff at August 3, 2005 8:14 PM

What would be a good sub for the 35 double unders? I don't have a jumping rope.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Mikael at August 3, 2005 9:10 PM

Matt G. = virtuosity. Look it up.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Ron N. at August 3, 2005 9:12 PM

Mikeal

put a bit of string between 2 chairs and jump over back and forth.

Comment #13 - Posted by: Stephen r at August 3, 2005 9:54 PM

Quick question for those that can do double-unders ... What would better approximate the physical demands of a double under, box jumps or burpees or maybe something else.

I know others have previously subbed an increased number of turns of single unders but I can't skip at all. Sigh - another skill to add to the warm-up.

Many thanks, kempie

Comment #14 - Posted by: kempie at August 3, 2005 9:59 PM

Taking the next two days off for a 30K bike race on Saturday. Wish me luck......

Comment #15 - Posted by: that guy at August 3, 2005 10:38 PM

Kempie

Skipping is mostly about timming. Try this, get a rope hold both ends in one hand, jump high & spin it twice at your side until you get a feal for it. Take heart, it doesn't take long to learn.

Comment #16 - Posted by: dru at August 4, 2005 1:45 AM

As always, good words Coach.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Dan Silver at August 4, 2005 1:57 AM

Thanks Dru, will give that a go for today's WOD.

Cheers, kempie

Comment #18 - Posted by: kempie at August 4, 2005 2:28 AM

Question: with the skipping how long is a round of double ups? 30 sec,1 min, 2 min? or is it the amount of double ups that consitutes a round?

Comment #19 - Posted by: JoeB at August 4, 2005 3:20 AM

Forced to take a couple days off. Poor sleep caught up with me and hit hard.

Steveo

Comment #20 - Posted by: steven stackpole at August 4, 2005 4:13 AM

JoeB, each round should last for long as it takes to get 35 double-unders. Under 30 secs for some, till the cows come home for others.

However to preserve the anaerobic nature of the WOD, my thoughts would be call it a day after 90 secs or 2 mins if you are still going, and get stuck into the next 200m sprint.

JMO

cheers, kempie

Comment #21 - Posted by: kempie at August 4, 2005 4:19 AM

20 k in to work last night (bike ride)
20k back in this morning
WOD 22:10

did 70 single per set

Comment #22 - Posted by: Hooger at August 4, 2005 4:55 AM

29:17. Did all 175 double-unders but never got more than 12 consecutive (every 3rd or 4th turn). Loafed on the middle 200 meter runs.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Ted Zink at August 4, 2005 5:29 AM

15:45; I was able to get into a rhythm and do a double under every other jump. Unfortunately this doubled my time with the rope and the longest string I could put together was 15. I chose not to count the single jumps or misses on the DU's.

Comment #24 - Posted by: David B. at August 4, 2005 6:12 AM

13:27 as RX'D.

The jump rope at my gym that is perfect for my height has seemed to disappear. I had to use one a little shorter, which meant I had to do tuck jumps for my double unders. I was bringing my knees up to hip height while having to bend over a little to clear the rope. 1st round I made all 35, the next 4 rounds i'd make it to about 25 and then lose rhythym. After that i'd make 2 or 3 in a row, but at that point I was having a tough time finding my flow. Had the treadmill at 8.0 mph, but I think I could have gone faster. This was fun, and i'm goign to find a better jump rope and shoot for 12 minutes next time.

Comment #25 - Posted by: jeff at August 4, 2005 6:29 AM

Kempie,
As with most other excercises, the physical demands for double unders depend on your form. For me, it was helpful to concentrate more on hand speed with the rope rather then jumping higher. You'll find as you get more comfortable with the rope you can maintain the same "jump pace" with double unders. Hope this helps.

Justin

Comment #26 - Posted by: Justin at August 4, 2005 6:58 AM

Thanks for your suggestions Justin. Will definitely try that out but first I have to get the whole "single-unders" thing sorted!!

Was going to hit the WOD with Dru's suggestion of a rope in one hand but felt silly when I started. Instead, I spent 30 mins practicing proper rope skipping and have progressed from tying myself up in knots to maybe 10 - 12 jumps in a row. Still felt silly but this is much better than any other time I have tried it and given up after 30 secs. Will keep this in my warm-up until I crack it. Even getting 5 or 6 in a row then starting again got a good sweat going after a little while.

Going to do the WOD later this afternoon with a burpee sub.

Once again thanks Dru and Justin.

Cheers, kempie

Comment #27 - Posted by: kempie at August 4, 2005 7:28 AM

7:42 - 5 rounds of 35 "single unders" and 200 meter runs. I acquired a slew of welts on my calves from all the misses. Finished with 35 double unders in 5:16, done one at a painful time. Now I have really spectacular welts on the back of my calves. At least I was able to do double under singles; a first for me. Thank you Lynne for the rope jumping lessons. I'll be making jumping rope a garage special this winter.

Comment #28 - Posted by: kelly moore at August 4, 2005 8:00 AM

Coach,
Great article. Putting it up at the gym with a note: Another reason to buy the Journal.
Jesse, first post, this does not look like fun. How bad am I at double unders that I am thinking of taking the burpee substitute?

Comment #29 - Posted by: Jeff at August 4, 2005 8:05 AM

Hi all,
That Guy, peddle hard and smart.
Workout as follows

Lisa {200m run, 100 regular jumps}x5. Duration 20:00.
Jon {snatch 60 kilosx2, db pp 50#'sx5, skip (~60 meters, push-upx10, skip ~60 meters}x9. Duration 19:44. Most intense workout to date (average HR above 165bpm). Weather= sultry. Drip, drip, drip...

That's a very sneaky way to get us to do 175 double-unders.

Wife:
11:24 w/ 3x single-unders (105) for each round
Not coordinated enough at 0430 to do double-unders, considering it was hard enough just to get the singles…

WU - 5k jog

WOD could not do double-unders to save life, but I gave it shot today.
Subbed DUs - with 60 skips w/every 5th a DU.
11:38

Next DU WO 3-4/ to 1

Gina
subbed DUs with skips X 2

Comment #33 - Posted by: Wayne at August 4, 2005 9:12 AM

I didn't do any double-unders because the higher jump seemed to annoy the neightbors (live in appartement), so I replaced double-unders by 30 burpees... As usual I subbed runs for jump rope (regular turns, smaller jumps, less noise)
Finished in 14:24 mins

5 rds
35 double unders
200m run

I did 15 single double unders each round. In the 4th rd I managed 4 double unders in a row and 3 in a row.
This took a while to get the rythem going but I am progressing a little at this.
For the run I sub'd spin bike 2 minutes each round. time=26:00

Could you sub two singles for every double under so as to keep continuity of the exercise???? so inside of 35 doule unders you do 70 singles????

5 Rounds
35 single unders

wu: 3 rounds of: 5 pu, 20 dips, 25 goodmornings, 20 hanging knee lifts, 25 air squats.

wod: as rx'd.

I've been praying for 200 meter runs since I first started Crossfitting a year ago. My sprints were more like labored lopes. Doubleunders went well but they do take it out of you. I'm used to doing 25 in a row. 35 x 5 rounds was a nice surprise! Was able to complete all 35 in the last round in one go.

More 200's please, my chest hurts more than my hammy's & glutes.

200's on TM.

Comment #45 - Posted by: Rick Ihrie at August 4, 2005 10:43 AM

Earl,

Your math is right, but single skips of a rope do not exactly match the intensity of double unders.

This is a skill that many CFers are working on!

I suggest giving D-Us a go for at least two minutes each round. Jump high. Swing fast. Have some intense fun. And get some rope welts.

Comment #47 - Posted by: Jonathan Jensen at August 4, 2005 11:04 AM

I have been missing my kettlebell and wanting to add a calf program to my routine, today seemed like the day to do it.

Warm-Up: 2x5 one arm press each arm, mainly to warm up my elbows.

My WOD: 5x10 Snatch's each arm 10:21

Finished with a light version of Steve Maxwell's calf program; he posted it on Dragondoor a while ago.

15 deep calf raises, 10 second stretch, 40 one leg hops as high as possible, 10 deep calf raises, 10 sec. stretch, 20 hops, 30 sec stretch.

Repeat with other leg. Feel the burn and massage.

Comment #50 - Posted by: Sam L at August 4, 2005 11:23 AM

Story time,

Two days ago my octogenarian neighbor Sal asked me if I wanted his basketball pole and board. I, who have trying to find a 12' piece of galvanized steel pipe, said "Sure!" Yesterday, after having performed the WOD, I began to extirpate the pole. I got down to the concrete foundation and dug partially around its perimeter. I then pulled on the pole. Expecting some movement, you should have seen my dismay when the pole did not BUDGE!
My next move was to visit the local ACE hardware store and buy a reciprocating saw with demolition blades (I forgot to mention the girth of the pole is 3 1/2"). After having spent a tad more than a 100 bucks on a Makita w/blades, I went home and showed my wife, Lisa, a new tool to add to her arsenal of power tools. Her reply, "great!"
I cut away at the pole, cut it to length, cut away some of the stump, and buried the area (replacing the carefully cut sod for Sal). The entire time I did this task, our three chidren (almost 3, 4 1/2, and 6 year olds were busy reenacting what I had been doing).
Today, I mounted end plates in the garage, worked with Lisa to pull the nearly hundred # bar into position (using ropes and the power rack as an anchor), jammed it into its slot, affixed to vertical studs (cutting each one w/dado cuts; placing one at each end, directly below the pole) to lend support to the end plates, and mounted a rope ladder I made for the children.
Soon after more cutting with Lisa (she's making cold frames for two of our raised beds), I went and mounted our recently acquired rings. Following an ingestion of "belly furniture", (for those who are interested, read Frank and Ernest by Alexandra Day; a children's book). We then had our family nap time, Ahhh, I do cherish nap time. Now, once my proximal elbow tendon is healed, I intend to attempt a MU.

The End

500 "single unders"
5x200 m sprints

Max: 7:00

I was surprised to find I could not do even ONE double-under, esp. as I have been skipping for years and have done as many as 1000 single unders without a miss. I seem to remember being able to do this in the past so it was disconcerting! Can someone PLEASE tell me how to do this!

Comment #55 - Posted by: Maximus at August 4, 2005 12:36 PM

Comment #56 - Posted by: John Walsh at August 4, 2005 12:54 PM

Well, that just gave me all the incentive I will ever need to learn to jump rope! Burpees are a nasty sub for "double-unders" and pretty much destroyed my sprints but I did 'em all and off tomorrow for 4 days in Amsterdam. Sure by the time I get back I will think fondly of this workout, but right now I am just glad it is over!!

WOD as modded 15:00.3

Ugh.. those double unders kill.. I can't do them nearly as 'smoothly' as the guy in the video, I ended up jumping all over the place.

Anyhow, finished the WoD as per in 19:46.

As Rx'd 13:28
Warmed up with Some exercises from Steve Maxwell's Grapplers Series DVD: KB slingshot, 35lb plate half moons, KB swings, and KB cossack stretch. After WOD did pistols, KB bent press then KB overhead carries down the alley adjacent to my garage gym then farmer's walk back. Thanks Ryan A for sharing the calf routine. I am so over wanting to train as a bodybuilder but have been looking for something to add on every few WOD's for more calf explosive power.

Comment #60 - Posted by: OPT at August 4, 2005 1:24 PM

As rx'd 6:04. This was the first time I was able to an entire WOD without pause.

I also wanted to comment on the article. Like kas mentioned earlier, nothing has brought out the need and importance of focusing and practicing the basics like martial arts training. All those advanced moves are based on the moves you learn the first couple of weeks of class...

Comment #61 - Posted by: EliC at August 4, 2005 2:01 PM

Executed the Jackie WoD today at ~ 30:30. Done at a slower pace to assist a new CrossFit enthusiast and my own general fatigue.

- L-sit practice.

WOD: Time = 10:50 (Subbed 3 x singles for 105 per round) Treadmill @ 1%.

Worked for 30 mins before WOD to try to get double unders with negative results. I was pressed for time so I decided to triple the number to 105 singles per round. Must learn to do the double unders.

Single DU's with a lot of SU's instead. I did twenty DU's on the last set with a couple SU'd in between... just something that I havent quite got the hang of yet.

Actually, i think the key is to do single double-unders and keep the rope going. thats probably the hardest part, keeping the rope moving after completing a single DU

200m runs killed towards the end. I did mine 100m up a hill, 100m down. suck

Comment #66 - Posted by: Sandy S (GK) at August 4, 2005 3:13 PM

RE: My previous post about not being able to do even ONE double-under.

OK - nevermind. I figured it out, which is good because I thought I was losing my mind. Turns out I was using one of those weighted thick jumpropes. I went back and used a plastic one, double-unders no problem now. Hope this workout comes up again soon!

PS - if you are really great at double-unders and want a challenge, try using the weighted rope! While it may not be impossible, in certainly is stunningly difficult!

Comment #67 - Posted by: Maximus at August 4, 2005 3:26 PM

This was quite-possibly the hardest I can EVER remember pushing myself in a workout. EXCELLENT!!

Took a minute or two to get the rythm down on the double-unders..by the third set I was able to get around 15-20 in a row before outright exhaustion became the deciding factor. I'm watching the kids tonight, so I subbed a 30sec row, all-out (this is following the run downstairs to the basement) for the run. After the 3rd set, I rowed for 45sec to compensate for my slower pace.

Total time (albeit quite broken) was 15:39. AWESOME!! :D

Comment #68 - Posted by: Jesse Woody at August 4, 2005 3:34 PM

Subbed 70 single jumpropes for the double unders. 13:20.

Comment #69 - Posted by: Craig at August 4, 2005 3:37 PM

Subbed singles for doubles even up (I was dragging and I can't jump rope to save my life) each 10 I tried a Double and failed. Round 5 I managed 6 doubles ( 1 at a time) at the end. I'll work up from there.

did this one outside. temp at St Joe's field in Philadelphia : 94 degrees. with the Heat Index 157. so friggin humid. no ocean breeze. no fruity drinks with minature umbrellas.

completed 5 round of WOD without incident. about 20 minutes. recovery was without incident.

16:00 doing 70 single-unders.

Best time on 200m= 1:03. Going for under a minute next time.

Comment #77 - Posted by: Ana Crespo at August 4, 2005 5:54 PM

Today was a learning experience in that I learned two things:

1. Double-unders = hard. All 5 sets I did 35 regular jumps, sneaking in a double whenever I could.

2. The treadmills at the health club only go up to 10 MPH for some reason, so the 200m "runs" were more like jogs for me. Did .13 miles on treadmill for each round.

After the WOD, I did some squats then worked on my double-unders. Afetr a strongly worded conversation with the rope, I was finally able to get the technique down. Can't wait until school starts again and I can get back into my regular gym!

Paul: As rx'd, time 19:44. The advice of mixing double unders with singles worked the best for me, but I could only get a few in a row during each set of 35. Mostly it was a single, double under, fail(count 1), single, double under, fail(count 2)...etc etc. Frustrating, but in a good way.

Lisa: Time 8:09. FIRST WOD! Subbed 50 single unders instead of double unders.

Comment #80 - Posted by: pwoodruff at August 4, 2005 6:42 PM

Best run of double unders was 8 in a row, but there were a lot of singles also.

Rarely, rarely, rarely have I jumped rope at all much less doing double-unders. Practiced with the jump rope before my conditioning class and figured that if I didn't mod I would be spending all week on this.

Mod - side jumps - aerobic step raised by an inch, a jump from both sides constitutes one rep and 70 reps = 1 set

5 rnds - 1 set of side jumps + 100 steps on an elliptical trainer at lvl 3 (for me, speed averaged about 65 steps a minute over the workout)

29:57

Much harder than I thought it was going to be.

Finished up with some DL and bar dips. I do believe Pukie was blowing sparkles in my eyes because I was seeing stars at the end this workout!

Being yet another in the long and undistinguishing line of those with no rhythm- and not a prayer of being able to do a double-under, I (we) subed single unders X2 & I added another 30 to make an even 100. Gretchen wisely stuck with 70. Otherwise, as Rx'd.

double unders were a killer, I occasionally got in a rhythm and did a doubleunder every other jump, singles in between. Doing this I could string about 10 together.

Double-unders every other jump, so 18 double-unders 17 single-unders. Time to add them to my warm-up till I get them licked.

Comment #99 - Posted by: Scott D. at August 4, 2005 10:04 PM

As RX'd with a weighted jumprope (at the handles). Didn't count any missed reps. DU's done every other pass of the rope (only counted those passes). Blah, blah, blah...

It has began,

Did WOD with the owner of the gym today, i got a sucky rope so i just skipped while he did double unders than ran with him. After he finished WOD one of the girls who i introdueced to a modified "Jackie" yesterday was wondering if she should try out todays WOD, she had checked it online already.
We found a second good rope and did it at the same time.

Total times
Colin 19:49min as rx 1st ever WOD
Fiona 16:42min as rx
Este 16:23min 3 rounds 2nd ever WOD

Double unders where the downfall of us all.

Dare i say it?? CrossFit Townsville has been born.

9:11. Sub'd 70 single jumps for double unders. All runs at 8.6 mph at 1% incline. I need to work on my jump rope skills. I feel like I could go faster. Started with CF warmup and finished with some work on double unders followed by hollow rocks.

11:38, had to sub regular skips puncuated with double-under every 3rd to 5th jump, increased reps of 2x-unders to make up (50, 70, 70, 70, 70), runs on treadmill @ 12mph w/1.0 incline

It's been quite a while since I jumped the 'ol rope and had difficulty (i.e. serious lack of coordination) getting the double-unders on the first set. Switched to twice the number of regular jumps for the remainder. At completion realized that doing 4x regular jumps would have probably been a more accurate sub.

Like many have already said....another skill to work on.

Note to self: do this with the run last . . . it was very frustrating to be trying to do a "skill" event (double-unders) in a state of near-exhaustion . . . kept missing and watching the seconds tick away . . .

Took quite a beating on the double unders as I managed 2 per about 4 jumps, with at least 1 whipping per round. Got alot of whelps and managed to loose about 3/4 of the skin from my right big toe. Dont know what that is about. All in all a very painful workout for me
