Oh dear, and I just did "Tabata Something Else tonight. So much for trying to get in the flow of the WODs. I think my quads would leap off my bones and run away if I even mentioned the squats to them. Grr...

Only did 3 very slow rounds
I would have gone faster but my arms just refused to do more than 4-5 pushups or chinups in a row.
Sqauts and situps were relatively easy and I didn't feel gassed at all.
What's the exact technique for squats here? With how much weight?

Todd, those are awesome times. Congratulations. My own strained effort was 3.16, 3.21, 4.08, 4.05, 4.18, breaking four of the situp sets and the last pullups. Still, the kind of WOD I like and am comfortable with.

Compared to my last barbara times(5:06/6:15/7:04/6:55/6:52) I was smoking. I will do my weighted pull-ups and dips later.
Pull-ups only broken to improve grip (using door frame...no bar). Sit-ups unanchored...tough! Found a groove for unbroken squats, but it looks like it may have slowed me down.
Enjoyed the 3 minute rest between rounds, but my legs are still shaking and I finished 10 minutes ago.
Ran some trails in the park, then warmed up with 5 rounds of: samson, supermans, ring dips, HSPU.

1st go-around with "Babs." She was not kind to me.
On wednesday I finally hit a squat of 320 a pr I have been trying for about a year (I hadn't trained the back squat until Josh started posting them in his workouts, thanks again for that Josh)
but now I have a serious pain in my lower back(not muscle sorness but more like a pull), but only when I arch it or twist just wrong. any ideas on how to fix it or what it is.

this is my first workout ala crossfit. started off w/ just what I needed. Took about an hour to feel normal again. averaged 3 and half min. per exercise. took 3 min rest between.. hit the wall on the 4th cycle but finished. will continue WOD for now on.

Pull-ups were briefly broken after round 3. Actually most of the exercises except for squats had deteriorated around that point. My 1st round time was faster and my 5th round time slower than my previous encounter with this one, but the average time was pretty consistent (.08 seconds slower, to be exact).

Hey R you can never go wrong with ice, and rest. I've been a massage therapist for 8 years so you may try a good rub down.

Question I have only been doing Crossfit for this week. Stumbled on the website on Saturday 03-12-04. Started Monday 3-14-05.
Does anyone out there do other workouts or does everyone do only the WOD.

I started crossfit in July 2004. I typically only do the WODs. There are others who do extra workouts on top of the WOD.
Wow! everything was broken but not assisted. The first 3 min rest was way too long but it soon became way too short. My first Barbara.
waqrmed up with KB swings and Turkish getups. Knee and ankle still a little swollen.
All pullups from round 3 and on were broken. Knee and ankle felt fine during workout. Hoping for a fast recovery. Lets see what tomorrow brings.

My conditioning is lacking to say the least.
Situps were full range with feet anchored - is this the best glute-ham situp sub? Pullups assisted at 28# (bw=126). Felt like I was lacking energy today which is likely attributable to non-Zone meals out with drinks the last two nights.
Ugh. After all the EXACT SAME EXERCISES I did for Chelsea yesterday (wish I could have taken a rest day, but this weekend will be workout-free, as most are 8-( ), I wasn't even sure I could finish with Babs.
As it was, I was assisted on all the pullups, and they were all broken sets. So were most of the pushups (broken). And the last two sets of squats. I am *dyin'* here!
But I finished everything - yay, me!

This workout was right up my alley!! Working on keeping the heart rate up and not stopping. Kipping pullups are still inconsistent, tough to keep from swinging. Squats felt great until I got out of the shower!! I may have to start using an exercise ball for situps. Hip flexors are being overtaxed and taking away from the lower abs. What about janda situps? Anyone else doing them?
Usually I am humbled by the WOD somewhat. Today, I was crushed like a little schoolgirl and laughed at. This workout exploited my weaknesses. But I loved it! Pullups were dead-hang, no-kip with a jumpstretch band for assist. Decided not to do the jump assist and I think that made it harder, but great fun. Situps were flat on the floor, no feet anchor, with homemade ab mat.
Finished with 4.2 miles up and down a big hill. The marathon is 6 weeks from Sunday!
I only had gas for 3 rounds,
I almost met pukie on the last reps of squats,after that I was nauseous for about 30min.

pullups need a little work. sit ups were not as good as hoping for. descent times though. good workout, happy.

Negative split on last set most likely due to more efficient push-up interval management. Push-ups continue to be my limiting factor (GTG time!).

The morning's workout (as best I can describe it)
1. Warm up run
2. As a group of 4, pick up a log.
3. Do group exercises (presses, situps, etc) with said log.
4. Go for a run with the log.
5. Bagwork - thai kicks and elbows, interspersed with Burpees, jump squats, bear crawls and crab crawls (up and down stairs).
Log and I are one.
All pullups assisted.

Bob Cornute - there isn't anything wrong with abs exercises that primarily work your hip flexors instead of the lower abs. But people do lots of different types of sit ups. If you want to isolate, try the ab mat!

Oooof! I got crushed!
Why does 3 minutes take so long at work, yet fly by today as if I never caught my breath? The situps really slowed me down. After about 100 days of Crossfit, I've identified weakness # 100.
Made the same mistake as Madsox and did Chelsea on my rest day.
Best for last? Not really, Possum Kingdom by the Toadies came on during the last set with the chorus "DO YOU WANNA DIE" blaring over and over. Suddenly I was squatting like a jackhammer yelling "NO! I WANNA BE DONE WITH THIS CRAP!"
Now that the adrenalin has worn off I want to curl up in the fetal position...with a beer.

i know i wont be able to do much at the gym tomorrow so im saving this one until then. instead, i did this:
distance: a little less than 1/8mi short of 1.5mi (so ~1.4mi)...didnt feel outstanding on the run, especially the middle half mile, but im satisfied w/ my distance.
i think i might dig back a little for a WOD i missed and head to the gym later or at least do some ring work (including iron cross work, of course)

Managed two rounds before I was feeling that "about to upchuck" feeling in my stomach and mouth the room started spinning and the gremlin in my chest was trying to pound his way out. Coming back to this stuff after a month off for a back injury is tough.

I just started with the CrossFit workouts a few weeks ago and I really enjoy the variety and overall training that they give me. I do have one question. When is the WOD for the next day posted? I have checked the website in the evening before going to bed and observed that it is not posted yet. I get up at 4am and it is sometimes inconvenient to fire up the computer that early. Other than that, great job.

This has been touched on many, many times. First of all...great job PERIOD by the CF staff, Coach and Lauren. "Other than that"? I don't think so.
If you look at the main page, you'll see that each WOD indicates the time at which it was posted. Typically it's around 7:30pm PST.
one suggestion ive heard for people across the lake is to just be one day behind, ie, each day do the WOD from the previous day. this way youll always know the WOD before you go to bed and youll even be able to mentally prepare all day for the next day's WOD.

5th set-so tired i forgot to start my stop watch
-had to break up everything eventually except squats. my arms felt like 2 useless pieces of rubber by the end.
Subbed sit-ups with Swiss Ball Crunches w/50# plate extended to ceiling (faster than sit-ups but more difficult exercise for me).
All sets unbroken accept the Crunches (last two rounds done in 2x20) and last set of push-ups done in 1x20 and 1x10.
Will go back to sit-ups next time because I at times found myself going so fast that I was bouncing off the swiss ball facilitating my work against resistance. Slowed down reps but had to concentrate to keep correct.

I've been doing handstands against walls pretty regularly for a few weeks, but I hadn't tried any freestanding handstands yet. After BJJ class I tried handstand walking after class. I walked about five feet each time, and I was really stoked I could actually balance like that for five feet! 100 step challenge here I come!
When I got home from BJJ class did some quick kettlebell practice:
3 towel pullups
5 knee raises supporting from rings
kettlebell snatch form practice with 36lb kb alternating arms for about five minutes.
Practiced cleaning my 62lb kettlebell, first with two hands, then with one.
Jerked the 62lb kb and walked around with it overhead. About 20 seconds each arm. Limiting factor was forearm pressure.
52lb kb one arm swings, practicing full hip snap and the wedge.
Wanted to see which was harder, hanging knee raises or knees to elbows, did 5 of each. K2Es harder.
Static holds like the top position of a one arm one leg pushup, 30 second holds each side.
when I 1st saw this one I thought, "this isn't so bad"... Famous last words??
I've been lowering the weight with all the other WOD and should've dropped the reps on this.

4:45 - The "Will to Die" kicked in.
Broke down the pull ups to 10 regular grip, 5 deadlift grip, & 5 switch of deadlift grip. Tried staying away from doing chin up grip and focused on developing the regular grip.
First time for Barbara felt really good, but looking at some of the other times a lot of room for improvement. As per normal the chin ups were my downfall, I thought I was fairly strong untill I started the WOD!! Its is amazing how lifting your own bodyweight for reps is so hard.
My wife and I did Barbara together and what a threesome it was! My wife really impressed me, as this was her first WOD and the only mod she did was modified pull ups and she was really pushing me. I almost met pukie! Deb is a personal trainer with a 2nd degree black belt in TKD and a cardio kickbox instructor. I knew she was in great shape, but last night I was very suprised!
Don't have exact times for rounds but it totalled 22:27 of work time so we averaged just under 4:30 per round. I know the middle 3 rounds were faster than the first and the last.

Disturbing sequence decay led to mission abort after round three. Besides, I had to get to work. A lot of jumping pullups just to stay somewhat on track.

Three cups of coffee and a green apple doesn't make for a good pre-workout breakfast.
Got the kids to do "Barbie" from the BrandX Kids WOD and I followed w/"Barbara." Funny how they didn't lie down and gasp for breath after each round.
Pullups seemed to be the limiting factor; they just kept getting slower and slower. Hung strong on the pushups and squats. Situps were broken but were pretty consistent from round to round.
Didn't get to do the WOD because of time constraints. I did make up a new exercise - it is called the "Apartment Walk"
Start at your car 100 yards from your destination, carry plates of weight any way you can with as much weight as you can, inbetween the car and your destination, you must have at least 8 doors (not including your car doors), at least 4 of the doors must require a key to open and there must be a glass sliding door, there also must be at least 2 flights of stairs, of course this is all one way.
Each trip I carried anywhere from 45 lbs to 60 lbs upstairs and on my way back I carried 25 lbs to 50lbs. Usually I was just griping the plates. Basically this whole thing started because I got my super cool BFS bumper plates and Oly bar (and I had to carry out my old weights). After my "Apartment Walk" warm up, I didn't have time to do this WOD so I practiced my OHS and did a lot of Snatches with just the bar.

I did this one a day late due to being on airplane most of yesterday. I'm now in lovely western North Carolina, and very glad to have a work out I can do with minimal equipment. I'm also probably going to take it very easy with weights for a while, as my back is messed up from too many deadlifts. Anyway, my times were:
all squats unbroken, most situps & pushups unbroken
Only did 10 pullups per round everything else as RXed

Faster than the last effort.
Did 4 rounds due to time constraints. The last one would have been worse than ugly, however.
Pulls were almost unbroken the first round, but the major limiting factor afterwards, so that explains the huge drop in times. Recovering from a real slack week due to the PFT I had Thursday (cut 40s off the 1.5 mile run time, maxed the push-ups and sit-ups. All with about 7 runs more than a mile this year. Thanks Crossfit!), and I think I'm getting round dos of the Dorm Plague that's been going around.
3) 2:38 paused for 5 second (thought I saw Pukie)
4) 3:36 paused for a minute (saw Pukie coming again)
5) Got severe pec and upper arm cramps and could not continue.
Obviously I started too slowly, and I definately need to work on my pull-ups!
Did "Barbara Lite" because I'm a doofus and forgot that it was 5 rounds, not 3. Probably for the best as I was painfully slowwwwww in all rounds.

Pushups only exercise to be unbroken all the way through. Pullups as usual slowed me way down
ouch, I'm not sure which was my toughest event. Brutal.
Trying to play catch-up, so did the 5x5 db c&j wod sets in between sets of Barbara. Bad idea. Several NPM's in this workout.

squats were most definitely the limiting factor (finished situps by 2:00-2:25 for every round). also, i used the foot of my bed for balance on the squats in an attempt to maintain good form (its still The Month of Perfect Squat Form!!). fun-ness.

Had to quit at this point as I could barely breath - probably not a good idea to do an anaerobic workout like this when still sick with the flu and lungs were working at ~50% capacity - ah, my combination of stupidity and ego is a terrible thing (but probably amusing to watch).

preceeded with 4 hours climbing at the gym, worked this Barbara slow and deliberate with good quality over speed, 3 rounds with janda sit-ups, and 2 sets with elevated leg pushups... I'm still nauseated 30 minutes later.

Pullups broken all over the place, mostly 8/7/5.
Pushups unbroken till 4th round, then 20/10.
Situps and squats all unbroken.

Been doing Crossfit for around a month and a half now. Always able to push myself hard. I'm not sure what I did wrong today. I warmed up for 5 minutes on the treadmill at 5 mph.
Round 1) 7 minutes, 30 seconds
Round 2) 10 minutes, 24 seconds
I was then visited by Pukie. I took a 9 minute break, but I could not shake the pukie feeling. I attempted Round 3, did 13 pullups, 10 pushups, and 10 squats, but then had to quit because of extreme nausea and feelings of impending pukie.
This was the first time this has happened to me, ever.

Sit-ups were the bottleneck.

what do sit-ups actually do?? burn fat or create muscles on the stomach?
