Ah...40lbs. of Sparkletts jug. Reminds me of goalie drills at Pepperdine.

Gotta be easier ways to get water to HQ guys.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Jeff at March 5, 2005 4:03 PM

Who could ever be that thirsty?? You've been reading a lot of Dan John's articles haven't you?

Comment #3 - Posted by: Ron N. at March 5, 2005 4:45 PM

I remember doing those with the 5 gallon water cans. That smarts.

Comment #4 - Posted by: CPT H at March 5, 2005 4:47 PM

Is HQ cold? I thought Cali was warm.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Jason C. Brown at March 5, 2005 5:06 PM

California's climate is as varied as its landscape. From near tropical (San Diego in the Summer) to really cold (Lake Tahoe in December) and everywhere in between. So, in short, it is a total pain in the ass to pack for traveling here... Unless you are coming to the Bay Area in which case you can just expect to always be dressed inapropriately.

"The coldest Winter I ever spent was Summer in San Francisco." -Mark Twain.

Comment #6 - Posted by: Dan S. at March 5, 2005 5:37 PM

i have heard santa cruz to get quite cold, and the water (ocean) i hear is cold year round. my bro lives in SD and man is the weather shaweeeeeeeet there...compared to NJ w/all these snow storms, dark winters, stressed out joisey residents and angry drivers, I know where I'd rather be! ha ha

Comment #7 - Posted by: zach at March 5, 2005 6:27 PM

Come up to Canada where we get -40 celcius and 7 hours of light.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Troy Archie at March 5, 2005 6:57 PM

Troy - it is a psychological thing here. In Canada, I would expect to be cold in winter. But all my East Coast relatives think I live in "Sunny California" yet my little town of Boulder Creek (outside Santa Cruz) has hit 50 inches of rain this year. And that is average!

Comment #9 - Posted by: beth at March 5, 2005 7:36 PM

I just read some of the comments made on friday and I know I'm a day late but I want to speak too. Matt your not a machine Your more than a machine becuase even machines run out of power sometime your are in very respect truely great and awe inspiring. I have certain people I look for every day, mainly Everett and Amudsun, but thats only because I'm more of a lifter, but none the less you are also one that I look for. I don't care what anyone elsse has to say I have talked to and heard from people I trust that you are for real, and that is enough for your times to be on my achievement list. You keep on posting those outstanding times and I'll be right behind you ---Way behind you-----

Comment #10 - Posted by: R at March 5, 2005 8:57 PM

Hey, MattG: Do you live in Memphis?

T.Rain, I built my Kbells just like the ones from treetrunks link and they work pretty good, probably a little less forgiving of poor form, but they're great for starting out light and then adding weight when you're ready.

Wade, try specialtactics.com. They've got some really good info in the forum about swimming and rucking. The forums link is on the far left side of the page and the rucking a running sections are at the bottom of the forum list.

Comment #11 - Posted by: robp at March 5, 2005 9:21 PM

hey... just seconding R's comments - although i don't know anyone that knows you. i just have no reason or inclination to doubt you.

and i'd love to get the Meeting of the Machine on tape and posted. if tonyd comes out there the ensuing work out has to be taped. that will be enjoyable. no offense, tonyd. i don't think anyone has beef with you. i just want to see what Matt G does utilizing a little pissed off impetus.

Comment #12 - Posted by: kevin gp at March 5, 2005 9:42 PM

holy crap, we know what Matt does on a regular basis...now see what he can achieve pissed off. gym rats and muscle-heads beware.

Comment #13 - Posted by: ediddy at March 5, 2005 10:43 PM

Early morning workout
1 mile repeats on the treadmill. 1@7:30, 7:00, 6:30, 6:00, and then a cool down at 6:45.
About 50 minutes total

CrossFit UK has just had it's first unofficial meet for a "suffer on sunday"!

Barbara for 5 rounds straight, no rest!

Graham 24:35
Karl 27:34
Gally 31:04

It was awesome to meet some like minded guys, cooled down watching the CrossFit DVD and threw about some training ideas. First of many meetings for me and the guys hopefully.... So anyway just wanted to share the day we had and look out for Davie and his beasting later on today! Good luck big man!

ps.....well played to Gally for introducing himself personally to Pukie....wait for the photos to follow!!!

Comment #15 - Posted by: karl at March 6, 2005 6:02 AM

I know this should have gone in yesterday's post, but I was busy celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Hoboken, NJ yesterday and didn't get a chance to do the WOD (and yes, I know St. Patrick's Day isn't for like two weeks, but there was a parade and the festivities got started very very early. First drink at 10am in the true Irish spirit). Back to the question:

Is it cheating to do Hand Stand Pushups with your feet on the wall as long as you are at a complete vertical angle? Or are they supposed to be free standing Hand Stand Pushups?

I know that you can do what you need to in order to get them done, but I just want to know what the ultimate goal really is and what I should work on, if necessary. Thank you in advance for helping me out. Later.

Comment #16 - Posted by: JaredE at March 6, 2005 6:50 AM

Karl, Graham,Gally...well done brothers!

Comment #17 - Posted by: DavidE at March 6, 2005 7:26 AM

JaredE,
The ability to do high rep freestanding HSPUs is a tremendous feat that very few can do. Almost all of us do them against the wall. You can add depth and difficulty by doing them on paralletes and lowering until your ears are at hand level. That being said, high rep freestanding HSPUs is an awesome goal. On a personal note, one of my New Year's resolutions is to get one fully legitimate free standing HSPU by the end of the year. High reps? Maybe next year.

Go CrossFit UK!!

WOW/WOD!

Thursday did the 135lbs x 150 WOD and ran 5 miles, Friday did the WOD speed squat 400 thing, yesterday skinned/climbed 5000 feet of elevation at Mt. Rainier and then skied down 5000 feet of trap crust in skinny skis (all on a bag of Cheetos, a Balance Bar and some Gatorade).

Amazingly, no soreness today which would NOT have been typical for me considering I've hardly skied/climbed at all this winter.

So, these are my props (from my somewhat less ambitious mountain world) to what Mr. Mark Twight (mountain hardman/Crossfit moderator) said about using Crossfit as a foundational fitness program.

Thank You Crossfit

Comment #19 - Posted by: Mark at March 6, 2005 12:09 PM

Did Friday's WOD as a change to a normal leg routine. 17:10 as prescribed. It was worse than I expected but not by much, as I have not performed a full run in almost ten months.

I have to give the utmost respect to MattG for being able to do this one in 7.

This one made me realize that I need to start working on cardio again and that I need help with my squat form.

Comment #20 - Posted by: Mike S. at March 6, 2005 12:10 PM

Crossfit U.K

Just finished the unofficial S.O.S

25:07. Had my wife with me as official timekeeper, photographer, water boy(girl) and all round coach.

had a really great workout, almost met pukie and just going to see if any of the photos are good enough to show you guys

Comment #21 - Posted by: DavidE at March 6, 2005 1:22 PM

Good show Crossfit UK!! You're brothers in spirit to those of us who share ties to the UK (grandpa from Glasgow and Grandma from Newcastle, but we loved her nonetheless!!) Cna't wait to se the pics!
Got to go back and read the comments from Fri. Was Matt G. getting flamed?? I have said all along, he is one of the elite. A true stud. And he speaks his mind, no sugarcoating on that dude!! His times speak volumes!
Finally, look at that video of Josh E. C&Jing 155kilos, over 300lbs!!! (I'm metric challenged, so if it's off, sue me. I'm an attorney, I'll rep myself cheap!)
Josh is a marvel and he's short! Oooh, I'll pay for that!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Ron N. at March 6, 2005 1:49 PM

Jeez!! Can't wait to see the pics! What a bad typist!
Also, rest day? 2 hour of 2-on-2 basketball.
Missing: Outside jumper. Last seen being used by big, tall, white guy. If seen return to R. Nelson, Anaheim, CA where it's 75 and sunny!!

Comment #23 - Posted by: Ron N. at March 6, 2005 1:51 PM

WOW - that is some video. That is AWSOME Josh! Congratulations - I know it happened a while ago, but for me, it just happened 2 minutes ago. That is Fing fantastic!

Comment #24 - Posted by: Andy P at March 6, 2005 1:57 PM

Incredible lift. I look forward to pulling that kind of weight some day.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Ross Hunt at March 6, 2005 2:44 PM

just a quick comment that the previous WOD triplet to me is the perfect example of Crossfit's minimalist brilliance.
A total of 6 exercises and for me about40 min in 3 days in which I was totally tapped out each time from a whole body muscle, metabolic and hormonal standpoint.
It transcends all the pseudo complex training systems and to me distills training down to the experiences mandated by our genome's history.
Brilliant.

Comment #26 - Posted by: timM at March 6, 2005 2:45 PM

Ron N. Im about 20mins drive from Glasgow

Comment #27 - Posted by: DavidE at March 6, 2005 2:46 PM

Ron N,

155 kilos is almost 342 lbs! (341.7 to be more exact. The multiplier is 2.2046)

Amazing lift. Congratulations Josh!

Comment #28 - Posted by: jorgen at March 6, 2005 2:49 PM

Did a leisurely 12 minute "Grace" for some active rest and movement. I think she'll go at 6 -7 minutes at full speed (for me at least).

Comment #29 - Posted by: Alex M. at March 6, 2005 3:00 PM

I remember a great video of someone performing freestanding HSPU from when I first started frequenting crossfit. Is that still floating around? i'm going to check out Josh's C&J now.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Robb at March 6, 2005 4:04 PM

Took the last 2 days off, so today I decided to do the last 2 WODs back to back (first time I've ever done more than 1 WOD in a day). I'm glad they worked completely different parts of the body!

Friday's WOD - as rx - 11:59
Sat's WOD - as rx - 5:02

Comment #32 - Posted by: andy P at March 6, 2005 4:29 PM

great pix of josh cln and jerk.....what most of you do not know is that the very next week josh entered a meet in las vegas and he duplicated the 155!!! plus he snatched 120....that is a 275 total...the dude is moving up!!!

hey, i've always just done my own thing but i've been wondering what the CF workout is.

i can't find it by searching on the forum.

Comment #35 - Posted by: kevin gp at March 6, 2005 4:42 PM

Sweet, Josh!

Brandt, this must be the video you're looking for: http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/HSPUx11.mov. Impressive indeed!

Comment #36 - Posted by: Carrie at March 6, 2005 4:45 PM

HSPU Modified + Paralletes

In attempting yesterdays WOD today I did the handstand pushups like this(necessity does breed invention). I put my feet in a chair in a squatting position and put my hands on the floor about a foot 1/2 in front. This had my upper body totally perpendicular to the floor and I could get reps in a handstand position.

Also, I built my own paralletes courtesy of the plans in CFJ #8 and they came out great. Cost me about $15 and an hour of time. Hope everyone had a good weekend...

Comment #37 - Posted by: Rob M. at March 6, 2005 4:51 PM

Coach Mike, thanks for the update on Josh's other awesome lifts.

He never toots his own horn, so I hope you will let us know how he does in the nationals!

I think I'll watch that video another 50 times or so. That little victory gesture at the end is the best part.

Comment #38 - Posted by: Laurar at March 6, 2005 6:15 PM

Re-did the (alt.)Tabata workoput from 02/20/05. After a few days of illness (one with no food/water) I dropped from 335 to 317.

Michael Williams muscled his way through to a 344 on his first ever WOD. Then he waved hello to pukie, but kept him at a distance.

Comment #39 - Posted by: rosceaux at March 6, 2005 7:34 PM

i know youve heard it a million times but nice work, Josh. the thing that amazed me most is the quickness of the moves. also, the split clean kind of surprised me, too. well done.

Comment #40 - Posted by: ediddy at March 6, 2005 7:49 PM

Every time I watch that video I get pumped.

Comment #41 - Posted by: Josh Hillis at March 6, 2005 10:58 PM

After a quick look at the IWF rankings, a total of 275 in the 85 KG weight class (which I'm presuming Josh is in - I may of course be wrong) is good enough to be ranked joint 129th in the world - strong work indeed!

Comment #42 - Posted by: Gally at March 6, 2005 11:26 PM

Ron N...neither Im afraid, I support my home team, Motherwell Football Club

Comment #43 - Posted by: DavidE at March 7, 2005 4:26 AM

Josh,

WOW, and congratulations on the strong work in Vegas!

Comment #44 - Posted by: RossB at March 7, 2005 9:20 AM

active rest day:
+/- 50 muscleups, cross progressions, ring handstands, basket kips, and a few back levers.
can't get the front lever yet...
did some HSW and static holds in between muscleup sets (every 5 or so).
my shoulders are really looking forward to the thrusters tomorrow.

amazing video! it must take a lot of huevos to stay under that bar and see it through.
