Rad vid. Not to criticize but I did notice that their form went a bit down hill after a while and I think it really corresponds well with this post and what Michael Rutherford had to say.

Troy,

Form degradation at maximum output is 100% certain. To expect otherwise is to misunderstand the nature of the stimulus.

Rutman's point was that this is best referred to as "two-hand anyhow" rather than "C&J".

We use "C&J" to encourage the form that is most efficient fully expecting neuromuscular collapse at max effort. This is not a small part of the value of the exercise. (BTW, "Fight gone bad" was designed in large part to induce bad tecnique.)

Comment #2 - Posted by: Coach at February 17, 2005 8:43 PM

What do you use to open this video file?

Comment #3 - Posted by: tom at February 17, 2005 10:02 PM

Wow. I was there when the three of them did that and it was still incredibly amazing to watch! And that is a great photo of Grady. I was going to write that Grady is a great athlete - which is true but not quite. Grady works his butt off so civilians like me don't have to worry about fighting in my town. I am honored to see you working like in this photo to stay strong for people like me.

Is there a vid of the guys doing Grace with 135? Annie, Chemgirl, and Nicole's effort and strength really inspired me to keep plugging away at my O-lifts.

Comment #6 - Posted by: ross greenberg at February 17, 2005 11:44 PM

Okay. Looks like nobody but me is punny enough to post it...

Grady Mac is a mighty swingin' guy.

Heh.

Awesome. Love the videos. Keep 'em coming.

Grady Mac you are the man!

Comment #10 - Posted by: Neal at February 18, 2005 2:50 AM

These videos are useful. For instance the recent one of the guys doing the thrusters and pullups also showed a lot of loss of form, many of the pull ups the chin isnt clearing the bar. Anyone trying to match these time with perfect form it would be impossible.

Comment #11 - Posted by: Steve at February 18, 2005 2:53 AM

Grady,
Are you in the military? You look like one of the SEALs I've worked with in the past.
Darryl

Comment #12 - Posted by: darryl at February 18, 2005 3:02 AM

I had been coaching G-Mac all weekend on the rules of a DB snatch. Use one arm, keep it close. How could this happen? I give him books, I give him books..and then this happens.

RUTMAN

Comment #13 - Posted by: RUTMAN at February 18, 2005 3:33 AM

Going skiing with kids for week. Any thoughts on how to maintain fitness whle away from gym and computer?

Thanks, Libby& David

Comment #14 - Posted by: Libby at February 18, 2005 4:33 AM

Very impressive effort.

Am I crazy or was the form (on the clean part) not at all what one would use for a max weight?

Comment #15 - Posted by: Paul Theodorescu at February 18, 2005 4:58 AM

First Grady gets busted on video cheating on his push presses in FGB now we've got him caught only doing half swings with the DB. Grady's posted times are forvever suspect in my mind.

Just kidding Grady :)
Please don't kill me!!

Comment #16 - Posted by: josh everett at February 18, 2005 6:35 AM

Sweet!

CrossFit Girls ROCK! (WOMEN, I mean. Annie, Nicole and Chris you are 100% genuine @ss kicking women!

Yesterday, I did 25 push presses with 65#, and 25 snatches with 25#. GRACE -- I'm coming for you, girlie!

Comment #17 - Posted by: LauraR at February 18, 2005 6:55 AM

Now that I've seen pictures of Grady, Josh and Greg I've realized something...I'm a freakin' midget compared to these guys.

Comment #18 - Posted by: Matt G. at February 18, 2005 6:56 AM

Matt G., same here. lol

Comment #19 - Posted by: brian_g at February 18, 2005 7:00 AM

im not a midget but i would consider myself slim in the muscle dept comapared to the CF monsters. and grady mac is shaq-diesel.

Paul-
to me it looks as though they did power cleans throughout w/ no squat. one is able to power clean if he...or she can pull all of the weight above the shoulders on the second pull. w/ heavier weight you just couldnt get enough second pull to get the weight all the way up to your shoulders w/o getting under it...so yes, as the weight gets heavier, youll be less able to do cleans as these fine ladies are shown doing (power).

Comment #20 - Posted by: ediddy at February 18, 2005 7:16 AM

Matt G.,

Don't go bulking up on us now. I enjoy reading all the great posted times and poundages from all the heavy hitters, but I like yours in particular because we are exactly the same height and weight. How your 3rd workout of the day is at least twice as good as my only one is a never ending source of motivation. It's hard for me to relate to these 200+lb monsters.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Will H at February 18, 2005 7:16 AM

Thanks for the news about Crossfit Live, ediddy! Sounds great!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Seth_D at February 18, 2005 7:20 AM

Don't worry Will...all of my attempts at gaining size have failed. I put on all the size I'll ever really have between HS (graduated at 140lbs.) and my sophmore year at Pep (167lbs.). Freakishly enough I actually lost bodyfat during that span.

I'm just blown away with these guys because not only are they kicking my ass performance-wise on a regular basis...they're hauling around a lot more weight while doing it. Bastards... ;)

Oh well...maybe in my next life.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Matt G. at February 18, 2005 7:22 AM

Matt, I don't think anyone's caught you when it comes down to 800m/squat combos.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Will H at February 18, 2005 7:36 AM

Maybe, but I weigh nothing. All I need is a stiff following breeze and I'm good to go.

For whatever reason my legs just don't seem to tire out. My stride during the 800s never changes even after the squats (I've read a lot of comments to the effect that people have a hard time getting back into the groove with their gait). My legs have always been pretty bullet-proof; I suspect that playing polo has a lot to do with it.

And again...I've got the advantage of having to move around 40+ fewer pounds.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Matt G. at February 18, 2005 7:47 AM

Tried opening file . . will not open in either Quicktime or WMP--so I guess it is in realplayer format? Any chance that you could post files in standard mpeg format? I don't use realplayer (at my site, anyway) because we have had significant problems with it locking up machines.

Just my $0.02--YMMV

Comment #26 - Posted by: Clay Jones at February 18, 2005 8:02 AM

I've seen Grady in action and know he is fearless when attacking the "girls!" Nice picture!
Finally done with birthday dinners and whatnot around here. Would like to get back on schedule eventually. Today will be catch-up with yesterday's WOD.
I did run my CC team through the WOD yesterday with great results. Cut the distance to 400m becuase they're Jr. High kids and got some impressive times. Afterward they cursed my name, but one kid comes up and says, "Cross country is more fun this year than last year. Last year, all we did was run!"
I think that says it all!
Strong Work!!

Comment #27 - Posted by: Ron N. at February 18, 2005 8:19 AM

It's great motivation to see these videos. Please keep posting them!

Hey, Matt G.
Will H. is right, we"ll be lucky if we can do at least half of what you are capable of.

Comment #28 - Posted by: Cesar. at February 18, 2005 8:21 AM

Just saw the video. Nicole rocks out loud!! I see a new fan club emerging!! (Just kidding Tony!)
Guys,
I always take Matt's times with a grain of salt because he's only part human!! ;)
I know Matt's gonna flame me one of these days!

Comment #29 - Posted by: Ron N. at February 18, 2005 8:27 AM

Try "real alternative" (just Google it) for the videos. It plays real media files and you don't have to install the obnoxious standard real media player.

Comment #30 - Posted by: Sam L at February 18, 2005 8:42 AM

21-15-9 reps of pull ups with 1 min rest between sets

Shoulder press:
5x45kg
4x47.5kg
3x50kg
3x52.5kg
2x55kg
1x57.5kg
3x50kg
3x47.5kg

Every minute on the minute for 7 minutes: 5 stiff leg deadlifts, 70kg

10xskin the cat and return.

Comment #31 - Posted by: Graham at February 18, 2005 9:39 AM

Another fan here for the Crossfit ladies - all kicking some serious *butt* on that video!

Meanwhile, knowing I have two rest days coming up this weekend, I did the following:

For time, 4 rounds of:
400m run
60-lb thrusters (21/28/15/12)
30-lb DB "press-flyes"[0] (21/18/15/12)
Pull-ups (21/18/15/12)
26:35, and I feel good and tired!

[0] That's a dumbbell press with a flye in the middle, so the motion is a 4-count "up, out, together, down". I've never heard an "official" name for these, but I'm sure I didn't invent it myself...

Carry on!
ND

Comment #32 - Posted by: madsox at February 18, 2005 10:26 AM

Thanks Sam, real alternative seems to be Windows only (I use OS X), I tried Mplayer for OSX, that didn't work either. Still looking for an alternative . . . .

Comment #33 - Posted by: Clay Jones at February 18, 2005 10:31 AM

Matt G., I outweigh you by about 30lbs and I still look to catch you. I always look at it the other way around. I've never needed to lift a car. I've often needed to run full out for unknown distances and also needed to haul my ass over things. The ease of mobility found in little guys has always been an envy of mine. Combine that with some real strength and you have... well, a good gymnast or Matt G.
I still hate him.
And then there's that guy in the break dance video... but we don't know if he can run.

As the saying goes, "Every day on the savanna a gazelle gets up and knows it must outrun the fastest lion. Every day a lion gets up and knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle. So no matter if you're a lion or a gazelle you better get up running."

and I add - who wants to eat a sickly gazelle. Go catch the fast ones.

I gotta get faster.

It was an Awesome seminar with exceptional athletes and coaches.

FGB was canked as Command PT today. What we did instead was laughable to what I witnessed last weekend. We'll get our day.

Miss Everett, you can oly lift but you're still a pretty boy:)

Comment #35 - Posted by: grady mac at February 18, 2005 11:26 AM

Silly question... How did Chris Matthews get the nickname "Chem Girl?"

Comment #36 - Posted by: Andy W. at February 18, 2005 11:28 AM

Jeez, guys, it's one frame of Grady in action--I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's still on the way up with that dumbbell. ;-)

Grady, I have to agree you that Josh's lifts are awfully pretty. That's what you meant, right? (Check!)

It's good to see the big boys sling some mud at each other!

Comment #38 - Posted by: Will H at February 18, 2005 11:50 AM

Is there a link somewhere with all these cool CF videos?

Comment #39 - Posted by: Jeryd at February 18, 2005 12:03 PM

Thoroughly enjoyed the vid and the mud slinging.

Comment #40 - Posted by: larry at February 18, 2005 12:06 PM

Matt G and the others thanks a ton for thinking of me as big. I've spent my whole life being the little guy (I'm 5'9" 180-185) I ran the high hurdles in track and was always the shortest guy in the race, and for football I was a munchkin.
You guys made my day.

Comment #41 - Posted by: josh everett at February 18, 2005 12:15 PM

here was PT today for anyone who is interested:somene saw me doing HSPU and Pull-ups and all manner of other "crazy" excerises, so i decide to putthe PLT through it. they called this one "this end up" tabata interval HSPU and Pull-up going from on to the other for 20 mintues

example: HSPU-10 then go to pullups- i'd curious to get some feedback on it, it hits the upper body like a ton of bricks.

Comment #42 - Posted by: Ben at February 18, 2005 12:20 PM

Couldn't just *watch* the video and not do "Grace" today...

115# clean & jerk
30reps
TOTAL TIME= 6:22 (previous Grace with 115# 10:31, a 4:09 improvement from 10/31/2004!)
A good way to end the work-week.

Comment #43 - Posted by: jdg at February 18, 2005 12:38 PM

Josh, how has your olympic lifting affected your vertical leap? Just curious. I'm thinking that since you said you ran high hurdles and we all know of your olympic lifting prowess that you could most likely dunk a basketball. Am I right?

Comment #44 - Posted by: KevinA at February 18, 2005 1:06 PM

Eva,

Nicole's and Annie's times look to be 3:15 and 3:38, respectively.

Mike

Comment #45 - Posted by: Mike Minium at February 18, 2005 1:11 PM

KevinA... My vertical leap isn't very good. It was 32" in HS. In college I had an ankle surgery and 2 knee surgeries (including an ACL repair)after that my vert was 24". While working for Ethan Reeve in grad school I learned how to clean correctly and my vert shot back up to 28" but I've been stuck there for awhile. As for dunking a basketball i set a personal goal back when I was 18 to still be able to dunk when i was 30. I'm quickly approching that age, I was 28 the last time i made a dunk, I haven't tried at 29 but you can bet your life even if I've got to drop 10 pounds I'm going to dunk sometime between may 05 and may 06.

Comment #46 - Posted by: josh everett at February 18, 2005 2:30 PM

Great video and great job, gals! Made me feel like a sissy. I did my first ever "olympic lifts" (C&J and snatch) last week and had to keep it light (95-115 lbs.) I did yesterday's WOD this morning due to yesterday's haneous schedule:

2 rounds
+800 meters
+21 squats
in 20 mins
Finished third round in 23:21

Comment #47 - Posted by: robp at February 18, 2005 2:49 PM

Oh man. Where do I get these ideas? Damn you Crossfit. I blame Matt G. in particular for this new double-WOD thing I've been doing.

So, after reading Kelly's Muscle-Up-o-rama post the other day I decided to reserve today for doing two things:

A- Making up the last two (missed) WODs (I've been slacking watching Smallville on DVD).
B- Doing the same workout Kelly did to see how I stacked up.

Started with yesterday's WOD(800m/squats/situps)
and finished that in 21:32. Used a treadmill.

Rested for ten minutes...

Then the MU-o-rama. Started with 10 singles (not that bad actually, shoulda kept going). Finished the first 30 in a PR time of 08:30. Final count at the 20 minute mark= 56.

I'm pretty stoked about that number and all the more impressed with Kelly's feat.

Happy rest day everybody... To the Tonga Room!

-D.

Comment #49 - Posted by: Murph at February 18, 2005 4:16 PM

I do had to do the workout after seeing the girls. 30 reps in 4:55 with 135#. This tells me that I could now blow the workout out of the water from last month that had you taking 135 from floor to overhead in 10 minutes. I did 42 then. Also did 10 minutes of chelsea +2. Ran 1 mile, 15 on stairmaster, 20 on elliptical, bike 15

Comment #50 - Posted by: davids at February 18, 2005 7:12 PM

Josh is 5'9" and can dunk a basketball???? Just another reason to envy the dude!
6'3" and I have a tough time touching the rim. Hell, palming the ball is a challenge!

Comment #51 - Posted by: Ron N. at February 18, 2005 9:43 PM

Unintentional "Rest" day: Work 10 hour, play pool with friends 2 hours. Back to it tomorrow.

Ron: hee! I use Josh Everett as a kind of thorn in the side of a certain crossfitter I know. It's kind of funny to hear him muttering, "josheverett..." as he walks of shaking his head. (Paybacks for him asking me if I did chelsea with REAL pullups yet.)

Josh = my hero! The "little" guys can finish first. (I'm 5" nuthin so I'm a might littler than most. 5'9" is short for a Globe Trotter, though)

Grady, LOL manly man or girly man = you all make the average man on the street look like buttercups!

Comment #52 - Posted by: laurar at February 18, 2005 10:57 PM

Ron -

Yeah, I'm 6'3" and I can't dunk either. I can get high enough on the jump, but not high enough while controlling a ball. Soccer balls and volleyballs (both palamable) go down no problem. But an actual basketball still gives me troubles. Here's hoping that an extended time with Crossfit will help boost that for me...

Comment #53 - Posted by: Chris Forbis at February 19, 2005 2:57 AM

Josh,

You're blowing it. I had them believing that you were 9 feet tall and could shoot lightning bolts out yar arse. Now they know your not so tall, but they'd still better watch out for the lightning.

Weird thing is that Stephane Rochet is only 5 feet tall but seems so much larger in photos.
