"From time immemorial, mankind has struggled for existence against the hazards of the elements, wild animals, pestilence, and a common enemy, fellow man. The determining factor in his agility to cope with the environment has rested largely up on the individual's own physical prowess, mental alertness, and general well being, for history records the story of a survival of the fit."
- From Mass Exercise, chapter 1, The Need for Physical Education, United States Naval Institute, 1943

Saw the posting about who is fit and who is not. Yes I would say I can't run a 5k very fast, Oly lift and powerlift yes. Do I have some work to do to become a 75% Fit person in all areas that the coach has talked about Yes I do. Am I doing WOD yes, not maybe to the degree some of you can, but am doing them. I may suprise you with how fit I am at 280lbs. I have posted a few times on some of the WOD. I don't judge those who do better then me because they may weigh less when doing pull-ups or that I can do more lbs. in a WOD with a clena it it. We are all at different phases in life and training. What one can do another may not, that is where Coach talks about trying to be 75% in all areas to be fit.
Thanks for those who supported me and didn't pass judgement.
To all. keep training and CrossFit is where it is at.
I feel a lot less than 75 percent today. Did Saturday's WOD, 8 rounds, several L-pullup rounds broken. Still feeling a litle bit of the max pullups plus 10K.
New to the site. John Baumann introduced me to it. John has been a great friend and valuable source of information for years. I first of all have to express utter disappointment in all that took one look at a photo and judged John for his appearance. Did anyone think to ask-how was his posture AT THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT? Could he have been slouching or just tired.
Secondly, about John's fitness-I have run a sub 3:00 marathon, can do Olympics (that John taught me how to do), perform a number of the workouts on this website, and yet in certain areas-John kicks my tail time and time again. Thus, do not judge a book by it's cover.
Lastly, I have a number of friends who coach many of the world's top athletes. They are not the "picture" of health. Yet, they are the some of the greatest "training" minds in the world.
I want to close with one last thought. Look at Steven Hawking-the greatest scientific mind of this era. The man is physically feable and confined to a wheel chair. He has to communicate his thoughts to the world through computers. Yet, we he "speaks" it makes international news. If I were to post his image on this website without any introduction what would people say about his abilities?
I did Saturday's workout today. I am now two days behind. Anyways, in 20 minutes I did 6 full rounds plus the 5 box jumps, and 6 pullups.
Hey John B,
I'm confident that the cowardly loser who took a pot-shot at you is not a real CrossFitter. I know I'm in the majority when I say that those of us who have been around a while, and especially those of us who have benefitted from your incredibly generous support of CrossFit, know the scoop. Anyone who has been at this for a while, and has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to post under their real name, has too much common sense to pass such ridiculous superficial judgements.
You are 1000x the gentleman than "anony-loser" can ever hope for.
John is one of the best people I have ever come across in the field of strength and, well, everything.
I didn't see this crap until a friend of John's sent me the link. I am completely against the tone of the anon post. First, I am not a fan of judging people by looks (see "The Swan" television show for the antithesis of everything I believe in). Second, the judging of others is a problem. Anyone who was at the Colorado Crossfit gathering would agree that crossfitters come in every shape and size.
Compared to most crossfitters, I am huge. But, John and I are both throwers. I carry 260 pounds so I can compete...but I still give up at least 60 pounds in most Highland Games.
Aw, enough from me: John is a friend and this whole thing has to hurt his feelings. Hey, it hurt me. John offered our crossfit team a great bargain on stuff and we respond with this?
At the O lift site at "goheavy," they constantly attack "BiggerFasterStrongers" attempts to include O lifts. So, the O lift community bites anybody who wants to develop O lifts. It is stupid.
I'm Dan John. I go to track meets, HGs, O lift meets. I use my name. Mark Twight has trained with me. John B is my my friend. I don't hide behind some goofy ass internet name or other crap.
Dan John and John Baumann,
I think Dan is right that this discussion may have hurt John B's feelings. I expect Anonymouse is feeling misunderstood but more than that wishes they could take back the post. What they said was posed as a question with the tone of a rumination, one I expect would never have been asked to John B's face.
I made a post when Dan John made one of his typically self-deprecating remarks that as I wrote, I saw as playing around with him in just the way I had over beers at dinner with him face to face. Sitting in the comments in stark black and white, it wasn't funny and I have wished and wished I could take it back. I was spared any replies at all.
The lesson for me is don't write it if context or knowing the person is a requirement for the comment to be understood. The lesson for Anonymouse was don't say it if you wouldn't say it to the person directly.
My comment made me feel unworthy of being here and that was no fun.

All I can say about this flap and about CrossFitters in general is this: I would rather be with one in a dark alley than be on the opposite side of one in a dark alley!
Hope that made sense. Fighting a cold recently and all the vitimin C and tempering seem to be helping!
Oh yeah, if Dan John says it, I probably believe it!!
I'm Ron Nelson and I approve my message; cryptic as it may be! See you at Mike's HS in January!
John Baumann,
Thanks for all your contributions to the CrossFit community. We all appreciate it big-time.
Anonymouse was an anomaly and not the norm, I assure you.
Mike
Didn't rest today.
6 Sets Pushups/Situps/Pullups
50,50,15/45,45,15/40,40,13/40,40,12/35,35,12/30,30,10
Ran for 44:38 in boots on soft sand. Not sure what the distance was but I think it is close to 10K.
8 sets rope climb, 4 all upper body.
3x8 ring pullups
I think the name says it all...
Anonymouse:
Anon - someone trying to hide
Mouse - something rather small, weak and insignificant
Ya know, I wouldn't feel too bad for the guy...he got one bad comment and like a hundred good ones :-) I'd take that kind of ratio any day!
my normal, pre-cross fit lifting partner called today to see if i wanted to workout. i have been doing nothing but crossfit workouts and some swimming for about the past month. today we did chest and bi's in standard workout fashion, but as a bit of a litmus test we started with a crossfit style 3-2-2-2-1-1-1 bench press. i warmed up with a set of about 15 at 95 lbs. then started at 115 for 3 and went up in 5# increments. i got 135 clean, all me, no help on the first 1 rep set. and then got a couple 140's for the last two 1 reps. partner had to bump me through the sticking point on those, but still...
i am way psyched!!! thank you cross fit!!!
I.m a fat guy too.I do all the crossfit I can, work out as much as I can,go till I puke.It.s easy to look at someone from a distance and prejudge them ,harder to walk in their shoes.100% is 100% large or small, short or tall. Most of the guys that look really fit(you know-lean ) do crossfit with me don't come back they say that the workouts too hard. So what it maybe is more about heart then belly.
John,
Count me as another vote in support of you. I respect your achievements and appreciate your contributions to this community. Thank you
I read the negative opinion about Mr. Baumann and immediately dismissed it as most likely out-of-line, prejudiced and wrong. I also made an immediate judgement, though I may be wrong, that if someone rates a portrait on this site, he or she probably is way above letting an un-called-for peep from a pissant get more than a micro-second of notice. Let it go people. Even a moron is entitled to its opinion (myself included). Usually if you ignore the troll, it will go find some other bridge to live under. Hey, if nothing else Mr. Baumann got to hear some heart-felt compliments he wouldn't otherwise have heard.
Skied all day today (9 am to 4 pm) @ Lake Tahoe w/o getting tired at all, 1st time in a couple years, how much you wanna bet discovering this web site 6 months ago has anything to do wit dat?
