Is there any time component (other than the obvious "all in one gym session") to this workout?

Comment #1 - Posted by: Matt G. at December 5, 2004 5:29 PM

I'll say it again: Awesome website, Ryan!

Matt,

I don't think there's a time component, although I'm happy to be corrected. I'll wait 60 seconds between efforts (do pull-ups, wait 60 seconds, do bench press, wait 60 seconds, do pull-ups, wait 60 seconds, etc.). I'm certainly not putting that out as the standard, though--just my personal preference.

Comment #2 - Posted by: Mike Minium at December 5, 2004 5:44 PM

Mike...I was already thinking along those lines (I was going with no break between Bench and PUs, then 1-2 min. between rounds), but just thought I'd go ahead and ask.

Comment #3 - Posted by: Matt G. at December 5, 2004 6:08 PM

Is this an 'endurance' or 'power' day? What if body weight bench presses are too light and I can do 25-reps? What if it's too heavy? What if I can't do but 5 pull-ups? Any suggestions/answers, guy? Thanks...

Comment #4 - Posted by: Allen Lunn at December 5, 2004 6:12 PM

Allen...it's pretty straightforward; do the workout as written. Take as little rest as possible. I suspect your example of 25+ bodyweight BPs will quickly fall when rest is eliminated. As for a sub-standard ability to do pullups...just do the workout, and perhaps add some extra pullups when finished.

Comment #5 - Posted by: Matt G. at December 5, 2004 6:19 PM

I did this without rests. I can't do BW bench presses so I picked a weight I could do for reps: 65 # (I tried 70# but it was a little too heavy).

rd 1: 18 bp, 23 row pullups (inclined with feet up - pull like a row up to bar)
rd 2: 15 bp, 25 row pullups
rd 3: 11 bp, 16 row pullups
rd 4: 9 bp, 15 row pullups
rd 5: 11 bp, 17 row pullups (pushed out a couple extra since it was last round)

I have been trying to work in a warmup (which has been difficult)

I did three rounds of
sampson stretch
situps
boomstick o/h squats
5 burpees

Comment #6 - Posted by: laurar at December 5, 2004 8:36 PM

I've been wondering what Sampson stretches are. I can't find them anywhere on here, and I've heard they were a good warmup for Crossfit. What are they?

Comment #7 - Posted by: Dan M. at December 5, 2004 9:08 PM

Dan, this is from Keith Wittersteon on a thread in the message forum:

"Samson stretch is a lunge with the back knee on the floor and the fingers interlace and the palms pushing up toward the sky. The longer your stance, the deeper the stretch. You want to let your hips move forward and down. You press up through the palms and stretch the sides of the body and the quads and hipflexors of the back leg. Hold about 30 seconds and switch. "

Comment #8 - Posted by: Laurar at December 5, 2004 10:13 PM

BW 175 Pounds.

BW Bench Press:

5,4,4,4,3

Pull-ups

15,10,10,9,7

I did this with very little rest. It took less than 10 minutes.

I am very happy with this because I have not done bench press in a long time.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Ahmik at December 5, 2004 11:33 PM

Ryan,

Congratulations! Your website is easy to navigate and looking really good. Best of luck with it in Racine, I can't wait to check it out in person!

Comment #10 - Posted by: RossB at December 5, 2004 11:45 PM

Time - 13:38.22
Bodyweight - 167lbs., so I did 170lb. Bench Press. Pullups were dead-hang. All reps "clean".

Round Bench Pullup
1 17 21
2 14 19
3 12 17
4 11 16
5 11 16

Did a 1 mile swim afterwards. That was entertaining.

On a side note...

What happens when you're doing a nasty WOD and listening to Nine Inch Nails at the same time? You begin to think that Trent Reznor must have been channeling CrossFit when he wrote Pretty Hate Machine. I offer you these excerpts from the song Sanctified as proof. When he refers to she/her, just substitute in "CrossFit":

...if she says give it all i'll give everything to her...

...Heaven's just a rumor she'll dispel.
as she walks me through the nicest parts of hell...

...i'm still caught up in another of her spells.
well she's turning me into someone else.
everyday i hope and pray this will end.
but when i can i do it all again...

Have a good day.

Any chance on getting the dimensions on your monkey bars....I am thinking of something similar....only using 4X6s and 4X4s to minimize the amount of welding I would have to do......your pull-up bars are awesome!!!

Bwt=116

115# bench/center point suspended bar pullups with 2 minute rest between the bench/pullup efforts

20-25 (PRs on both bench and CPSB pullups)
13-18
13-16
12-15
12-15

3 reps more on the bench and 2 more for CPSB pullups than last scored on 040422.

Grip and shoulders whipped, no hold work today.

Two hand 15# clubbell:
3x5/5 three second head casts, full choke

One hand 15# clubbell:
1x5/5 one legged swing to order pistols. No choke for right hand, full choke for left. Very hard variation of pistols - balancing and stabilizing while swinging the club to order on one leg really challenges the grip, midsection, hips, and ankles. Sure didn't need to do more than one set to feel these...my new favorite type of pistol!

Comment #21 - Posted by: kelly moore at December 6, 2004 7:22 AM

Benched 65 lbs (just over half my body weight) for each round. Pull-ups assisted with about half my body weight supported. 1 min rest between rounds. No rest between bench and pull-ups.

Bench 15 15 12 11 10
Pull up 15 12 11 10 10

Looking at the other posts, guess I could have gone heavier for less reps on both.

Comment #22 - Posted by: Norma at December 6, 2004 7:22 AM

and sub'd pulldowns for pullups 90# 5, 110# 5, 120# 4, 4, 3

we took enough rest to spot each other on bench and then a bit more between rounds. did not keep close track of time.
i saw kelly benched her bwt for reps. good work!! are there any other women here who can do that?

Dims. 20ft long 8ft high by 4 ft wide the verticals go in the ground 24 inches. the rungs are 24” on center. there are 11 rungs on this ladder.I have 4 more in the works with varying rung diameters and spacings. this unit will hold 11 people doing pull ups as well.

Great work out there. There are some fantastic efforts!

HQ today. Did a warm-up loop, and jumped into DB push-press for reps and weight progressions. Each DB push-press set was followed by 25 sit ups.
35lb DBs--30 reps
40lb DBs--25 reps
45lb DBs--20 reps
50lb DBs--16 reps
60lb DBs--10 reps
70lb DBs--5 reps
finished with 70lb DB DLs--got 20 reps before I couldn't hold onto the DBs any more.

Great win for Navy this past Sat. Beat Army!

Well, I tried for bodyweight on the bench (120) but couldn't lift the bar off my chest at 115. maybe next time. So I went down to 105 which I had lifted easily but now had tired myself out and needed to go down further to 95lbs for the workout.

bp - 4, 5, 7,7,8

Back and grip were really sore today thanks to my oly workout yesterday. pull-ups were greatly deminished from normal ability, but hey that just means yesterday was a good workout. only enough rest to shake the blood out of my arms, about 30- 45 seconds. bw is 185.

1) bp=8 reps, pu=10 ( 5 dead hang, 5 extra wide grip)

2) bp=6 reps, pu=10 ( worked on speed for pu's here so these weren't dead hangs, stopped when shattered grip gave out and dropped like a rock)

3) bp=5 reps, pu=8 ( all dead hang)

4) bp=4 reps, pu=10 ( 5 dead hang, 5 extra wide)

5) bp=5 reps, pu=10 ( switched to regular grip and no dead hangs.)

I had complete intention on doing this WOD but after I pulled a nerve in my right arm yesterday, making it very numb, I figured it would be best to just skip the bench part.
Pulls were deadhand with no Kip.
10/9/7/6/6

It doesn't seem like my pull-up max has gone up any but my total and ability to post higher numbers over many sets has...

Comment #69 - Posted by: Troy at December 6, 2004 6:06 PM

Bodyweight is 205, I did BP with 145.
Used 100 lbs counterweight on chins.

36 benches and 42 chins total. Less than 45 seconds rest between all sets.

This really nails the upper body hard. Last two BP sets were awesome.

Comment #70 - Posted by: Mark L at December 6, 2004 6:11 PM

Did what Matt G recommended; put 195-lbs on the bench (I weigh 228-lbs) and walked back and forth to the pull-up station from the bench. That's when I rested (the commute). This was an ass kicker, too.

Bench with 195-lbs: 8, 7, 7, 6, 5, 3
Pull-ups: 9, 9, 6, 6, 4, 3

Yes, I did 6-sets instead of 5. I got paranoid that my rest periods were too long.

Warmed up with a 2-mile run on the treadmill.

I just had a question I just got my rings last week and was having trouble gripping so i taped them and chaulked up and did a muscle-up. I need to know what i need to do to become part of the muscle-up club. i.e. video, picture, how many i need to do is one good enough. If anyone knows let me know.

Missed "Fight Gone Bad" last week. I'm in LA this week so I did it at Petranek Fitness. Thanks again Andy!

Previous best score 139
Today's score 161
All weights were as written.

Modified the clock though. I didn't want to be watching the clock so the plan was to just do 10 reps of everything (which would be a personal record) and as fast as possible. First set was ok, but was clear I wouldn't have been able to 10 push presses next time, and also that 10 wall balls, box jumps and calories on the rower was too easy. SO it eneded up looking like this:

10wb, 10sdlhp, 10bj, 10pp, 10cal row
12wb, 10sdlhp, 12bj, 7pp, 12 cal row
14wb, 10sdlhp, 14bj, 0pp, 20cal row

All sets were unbroken and fast. Last set I couldn't even clean the 95lbs to push press it. Was really stoked, finally got the who sumo deadlift high pull feel down.

Comment #80 - Posted by: Josh Hillis at December 6, 2004 9:20 PM

I was travelling yesterday, so I skipped out. Decided to combine both "Nancy" and "Lynne" today. I'm also working in the warm-up.

Started with 3 rounds of:
Sampson
Situps
Glute-ham raises from the ground (feet hooked under bar)
Pushups
Chair dips
Handstand drills

Then moved on to "Lynncy":

5 rounds for time of:
Max reps BW bench (140lb)
Max reps pullups
400 meter run
75lb overhead squats x15 (these are new for me, so working lower weight)

My benches went: 5,5,5,4,4 (sad...)
My pullups went: 11 (fingertip-ledge grip), 21,16,20,15 (ledge grip on all these)

Time = 40:36 (lost the time on first round, so this is approximate)

I met Pukie on the road, but had to swallow him. Now it's time to go meet Dookie, and I might visit Faintie after that... I'm retarded...

Got this one in last night. Pretty bummed about the numbers. Hopefully it will be bother me enough to get me back on track. Pull-ups were done w/underhand grip (one of my weaknesses). Weighed in at 216, used 215# for bench. I can do HSPUs and I'm decent at ring dips. Why does bodyweight benching continue to elude me? Followed Matt's and Grady's (nice numbers, gents) work/rest scheme using 1 minute between rounds.

Tried to catch up with the deadlifts before tackling Lynne (although in real life, I doubt I would try to tackle her!!). Big mistake as grip failure limited pull up numbers!! Only got to 245 in the deadlift before giving up and moving on (failed at 275# and my PR is 280#).
Anyway, the results: BW 215 bp done at 70%
R1 bp 165 8 pu 6
R2 bp 165 7 pu 4
R3 bp 165 8 pu 6
R3 bp 165 8 pu 5
R4 bp 165 7 pu 5
R5 bp 165 8 pu 6
Actually got a little stronger as I went. Tendonitis in left elbow limited pu. No more than 1 min break between sets.

I had shoulder surgery (supra spinatus tore completely off the scapula as a result of a traumatic dislocation) in ’94 and have stayed away from bench presses. Without a spotter, I was a bit anxious and did not know what to expect.

I warmed up with a 10 minute C2 row @ 2:15/500m and then a prep set of 10 BP’s @ 135 lbs.

Body Weight = 178 lbs
Round 1: BP 185 lbs x 2 / Pull-ups x 15 – Shoulder pain suggested less weight on the BP.
Round 2: BP 145 lbs x 10 / Pull-ups x 12 – less pain; too light.
Round 3: BP 155 lbs x 7 / Pull-ups x 12 – BP felt better.
Round 4: BP 165 lbs x 5 / Pull-ups x 12
Round 5: BP 165 lbs x 6 / Pull-ups x 11

Finished up with some clean and snatch practice with a 30lb bar and a 85% Tabata C2 Row.

Looking back, it become apparent I was fudging and not really maxing on each one, but pacing myself a bit.

Close enough. Need to bring my BP up though (the #s make sense though... at 6'3", 165 PU should be easier than BP...) I probably rested for a bit too long between things.

And don't tell me "Lynne" is replacing "Linda"! I get masochistic pleasure from the three bars of death.

But then my pullup numbers aren't great either. Lots of extra work to do, I think.

okay well...
Bench-245lbs

Bench/Pull ups: 18/10, 12/10, 12/10, 15/10, 10/10

During first 2 rounds I thought I was almsot finished with one more round to go. But I look up at the white board and see I had 5 total to complete. Messed around with different grips on the bench press. Best grip seemed to be half-inch from the smooth, middle area. Worst grip was 2 inches away or more from that middle area. Was still inside the power rings, but wider was my worst.

Pull ups have gone to neutral grip for the past week. But have been trying an idea I read about called the Russian no-rest stop method where I hang for 5-10seconds in between reps. Supposed to help improve grip endurance when going for higher rep pull ups in other WODs. Pretty neat, but I usually don't last more than 10 reps (notice above numbers).
