Pitiful I know, but the pullups continue to kill me. To make matters worse, I was doing them off a dirty 2x4 beam on the porch since I couldn't get to the gym (which also explains why I did this WOD today). Also, the walking lunges had to zigzag along the only flat walkway on the property. Once I thought I saw Pukie hiding behind a tree, but it was just an illusion. I keep thinking about all the room for improvement.

A day early, with scheduling problems. 10.34, breaks in some of the situps. A perfect weekend workout.

Comment #3 - Posted by: adam at June 12, 2004 7:00 AM

About how many lunges/reps equals 100 Ft?

Comment #4 - Posted by: Mike at June 12, 2004 10:53 AM

Mike,
Depends on your stride, but I was calculating 26 full-stride lunges (13 out and 13 back), as my stride was just under 4 feet.

One day early...

WOD as specified

10:45 - ring pullups, glute/ham situps

Walking lunges felt great with long strides and knee grazing floor.

I was going to do TSC style pullups, but my left bicep feels strained from yesterdays's weighted workout. Rings seem to aggravate the problem less. While not deadhang, there was no kipping and minimal "bounce" at the bottom of the reps.

Glute/ham situps done to just below parallel to the floor.

Comment #7 - Posted by: kelly at June 13, 2004 5:59 AM

21:30.

Lunges were pretty easy.
Pull-ups, done with a supinated grip on a bar, were the sticking point; the first set was 15. Sit-ups were done sitting backwards on a back hyperextension apparatus and more or less met the Jim Baker Standard for Sit-Up Excellence.
Warmed up by jumping rope; finished with an extra set (Lunge 100 feet, 3 pull-ups, 3 sit-ups) for the heck of it, jumping rope, extra pull-ups, Janda sit-ups, and a few pistols.

I enjoyed this workout. The lunges are a nice change.

All sets of pullups broken except 1st and last. Ordered Power Rings last night; I want to start trying the muscle-up. Yesterday I found my 1RM on pullups and bench: 90 lbs w/pullups and 215 on bench. I'm not really impressed with my bench, but the single pullup made up for it.

Kelly, you're times give us all something to shoot for, good work!

Kelly:

What's a TSC pullup?

Thanks,
Dustin

Comment #11 - Posted by: Dustin at June 13, 2004 8:38 AM

Hi, I'm new to posting. I've been trying the WOD for a while now. Loving it so far.

Ran 3 miles. Then the first set was 12 and completed as specified from there in 11 min.

Comment #12 - Posted by: nico at June 13, 2004 8:42 AM

A TSC pull-up is a thumbless, supinated-grip bar pull-up without kipping or swinging of the body, and with a pause at dead hang for a minmum of one second.

Thanks Ross, I'll have to check out that link.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Dustin at June 13, 2004 8:45 AM

I subbed tuck-ups for the sit-ups. Pull-ups on bar. Broke pull-up sets briefly on the 18 and 15 rep rounds. Time was 10:03.

Comment #15 - Posted by: Ryan Atkins at June 13, 2004 10:16 AM

19:03 Time also includes running upstairs and getting my daughter, who woke up mid workout, bringing her down and getting a snack to occupy her while I finished. She did clap for me though. Got the first set of pullups but the rest, except the last set, were broken.

Nice time, Kelly! I thought I was moving until I saw your time! I measured the 100' and for me it came out to 34 lunges (17 ea leg). Really enjoyed the lunges - nice change-up. Didn't bother my numerous aches and pains - shoulders are sore from the jerks and my right hamstring behind my knee is sore from the Tabata workout a few days ago.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Andy P. at June 13, 2004 12:36 PM

17m 35 s
A bit slow at the lunges part could have done it a lot faster faster

Finished with Tabata pull ups, lungees, Db Swings, and some L Holds. Pull ups still my weak link.

13:30 just started WODs. . .ran around a pool and up two flights of stairs in betwn lunges and pullups (only 3 each time with 10 lbs help). should I be doing anything else besides practicing pull ups to get better?

Caly, if you want to get better at doing pull-ups... just do more pull-ups. It has been working well for me. I try to do at least 100 a day (over the course of the day, not all at once).

Comment #23 - Posted by: Rajesh at June 13, 2004 2:17 PM

17:58 Hot day. Thought I did okay until I saw everyone elses time. Did not partition the pullups though.

From reps 15 and on, I did hanging knee to chest in lieu of situps to make things a little harder.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Cyrus at June 13, 2004 2:30 PM

Tony B - that's a tough pullup variation; I bet your hands are sore.

Dustin and Andy - thank you. And Dustin, you will love those rings. They are a great investment and a lot of fun.

Ryan - No way I could touch your great time. I was at full throttle on this one.

Comment #26 - Posted by: kelly at June 13, 2004 2:47 PM

24 min...1 pod KB each hand for lunges

Lunges are a staple of the "rest" of my workouts (non-CF stuff), and 100ft. of standard lunges wouldn't have been interesting...so I modified. Every complete cycle of L/R steps, I added 1 "bounce"...so the first step to each foot is 1 "bounce" (up/down movement), the next step to each foot is 2 "bounces", the cycle after that is 3 and so on. I went out-and-back...so I ended up working up to 8 "bounces" per leg, turned and then went down from 8 to 1 on the way back.

I fell twice on the last set had to crawl (no sh**) to the pullup bar. My legs completely gave out.

This workout was the final of 3 today...an hour of weighlifting this morning, plus an hour at the track this afternoon working sprints and plyometric drills.

Oops...fat-fingered the keyboard. It was actually 16:02.48.

Comment #29 - Posted by: Matt G. at June 13, 2004 4:01 PM

After 4 hrs of cutting down, cutting up, and splitting trees, I couldn't face any more mosquitos, so for the lunges, I alternated 36 back and forth across the garage with 36 striders. And since I didn't look at the WOD before doing it, I did sets of 3 and 1 as well, instead of ending at 6. Oh well... 16:19

Good WOD! Managed a very winded 17:30 Managed 12 complete dead hand unassisted pull ups on first set which is a big improvement over the past couple of months for me before finishing with 5 second negative pull ups for balance (12/9,7/11,6/9,5/7,4/5,3/3). No problem with lunges. Next time I'll carry DB's. No trouble w/situps either. I guess (hope?) a few more months and I might be able to manage a few unbroken pull up sets.

Did yesterday's WOD today after a few minutes rest. 185x3,205x2,205(failed),185x2,185x2,185x1 by four sets. First time doing jerks in years so tried to keep weight managable.

Finished with 4 sets of max dips with 1m rest between: 27,17,12,14

Pullups were assisted after first 8. Lunges started well, but last set required a short rest before completing last 25 feet.

Did yesterday's WOD this morning, and had to do today's just before dinner. Needless to say, I didn't eat very much....

Comment #36 - Posted by: doug at June 13, 2004 7:41 PM

Kelly,

If I had been required to do my pull-ups TSC style I'm fairly certain my time would have doubled (at least). I think it's safe to say you smoked me on this one considering your modifications - nice work!

Comment #37 - Posted by: Ryan Atkins at June 13, 2004 9:34 PM

Today's WOD was the toughest and funniest yet.

The grassy area we were doing the lunges is somewhat sloped, and we were doing our lunges perpendicular to the hill. This resulted in our crossing ourselved up a few times as we tried to prevent falling completely down the hill.

Coach Felicia forgot about the 12-rep round, and made exausted Richard go back and do it before moving on to 9. Richard was unable to argue, as he was using his open mouth for breathing.

Richard managed to whack his head pretty good on the kiddie pullup bar as he tried a clever shortcut back to big-boy pullup bar after some lunges... That resulted in him hugging the support post for balance, and a 10sec penalty.

Felicia performed well on the lunges, but tried to skip the 15-rep round... Coach Richard (having regained some control over his body by this point) would have none of it.

Richard - 24:46
Felicia - 17:24

The definition of a pullup became increasingly more liberal after the first 5.

Pukie stoped by and visited us both.

Richard & Felicia :)

Well I got a bit over excited and did lunges for 100 meters. Miss read the 100 feet. And thank God for my rubber band assist on the pull-up other wise I would be there till next week. Very sure I will be very sore tomorrow.

Around 17 min. Not sure of exact time as the kids kept interrupting. Did this at home so no pull ups; subbed in push ups as I am working on upping my count on those as well. Glutes and thighs feel it today.
First full week of doing the WOD and feeling fine. I'm better at 42 than I was at 21!
