First time doing low rep deadlifts in a long time. Also the first time I've been able to do crossfit for 2 months. Made a nice change from desert calisthenics! Going to hurt tomorrow

Not good today

315x3
335x2
295x2
225x2
225x2

felt pain in lower back, decided to stop there. 225 actually felt heavy and that's when i knew i had a problem. I felt the back pain initially when I was loading up the bar, but figured it might go away after the first set. Nope.

Just a comment, after about a mounth of doing this stuff, my DL max went up by 30 lbs. Partly this was the assistance with form from the information on the site/Journals, but also from all the damn leg work.

What's a good starting weight for deadlifts? I weigh 185 pounds, and I'm just starting the crossfit program.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Ben at May 19, 2004 11:17 AM

First of all; mega congratulations to Kelly for lifting 15 +% of a TON on the DLs today & thanks for the inspiration. I maxed out @ 275 with the 2 inch thick adelmans axle so 300 would be a great goal sometime in the future for me .

Matt, Bob, Jim and Dave - thank you! I'm working toward a beltless triple body deadlift as a year end goal. Crossfit is amazing as my max keeps moving up despite not formerly training to do so.

Dave, lifting 275# with a 2" diameter grip is outstanding. Very nice work.

Comment #18 - Posted by: kelly at May 19, 2004 1:28 PM

Played water polo with my sons team yesterday. Woke up stiff and sore today, as I haven't been in a pool in 20 years. Even so this week marks my 6 month anniversary with CrossFit. When I started 135# deadlifts were a trial due to a back injury several years ago. Today:
Bdywt 165
235 X 3
275 X 3
295 X 2
315 X 2 (PR)
315 X 2
325 X 1 (PR)

340 X 1 (PR)
345 X 0 Failed
Thanks Coach! 2X bdywt + 10

Comment #19 - Posted by: Jeff at May 19, 2004 1:52 PM

I just wanted to add something. I don't post very often at all, but I am really stoked! Prior to starting Crossfit about 2 months ago, I was running 4-5X week and working out. Since starting Crossfit, I have backed off my runs to 1-2X week. I just finished a flat 5K that felt like about a 25:30-26:00 pace which is a slow cruising pace for me. I looked at my watch and was amazed to find a 23:36. I was shocked. When I was finished I didn't feel at all winded or really maxed by the run. I am totally, totally sold on Crossfit!!! Thanks for letting me share my excitement!

Beltless. I went lighter for the first sets to set myself up for a PR attempt, so I was happy to hit it. Congrats to everyone on the impressive PRs. Kelly-- my goal is also a triple BW beltless lift, but I have a LOT farther to go than you (I weigh 170)!!

Comment #25 - Posted by: Cyrus at May 19, 2004 3:42 PM

It's my second workout with Crossfit. Yesterday was a rest day. I found that to be much easier than today's WOD. I fell slightly short of the recommeded 322211111 reps. I stopped at 12. Very tired.

Comment #26 - Posted by: Hedgehog at May 19, 2004 4:07 PM

Did something a little different today since I'm getting ready to move. Did farmer's walks with dumbbells (12 sets of dbs, 1220# total, avg db weight a little over 50#). Carried them about 45' from the db rack, up the stairs and about another 20' to stage them in the kitchen. Total time was 7:32.

Continued moving stuff (at a slower pace) for about 10 minutes before doing the deadlift workout:

3 x 155#
2 x 165#
2 x 175#
2 x 185#
1 x 195#
1 x 205#
1 x 215#
1 x 225#
1 x 235#

Holy PR city!! Congratulations people.

For those of you here for awhile probably know that I have been chasing the 400 lbs dl for a long, long time. Today it finally went. I didn't know whether I was going to be pulled over, or pull it up. I have a long way to go before 3 x bw ( I am 180 lbs), but this was certainly the first milestone. Thanks to Crossfit.

was using kilo plates (thus the odd numbers). Felt good but I had nothing to take the weight higher (tried but couldn't keep my back locked).

Comment #30 - Posted by: Rajesh at May 19, 2004 7:56 PM

All the weights I had access totaled 168#.

So, did some modifications to the reps:

6-4-4-4-2-2-2-2-2

Then,

6-4

All reps done at 168#.

Good work guys!

Can't do dead lifts don't have the equipment so I did the following instead. 1/2 mile run with a 1.5 mile walk, counting down from 21, 18 etc.. we did the exercise where you use a heavy weight and squat then put the weight over your head and we did crunches to match. Used a 15 pound weight, need to up that next time.
