Should even sets be performed at a constant weight, or should you increase the weight as usually done with descending rep sets?

Comment #1 - Posted by: Mike at May 6, 2004 7:37 PM

Slacked on this one this morning. Didn't really know where to start and I only have 300 lbs of weight. I should have upped the reps on all sets. Did 10 on the last set.

3 x 255
3 x 275
3 x 300
3 x 300
10 x 300

245-255-275-275-275

Maybe I could have gone a little bit heavier towards the end...but my form was strict and everything felt good, so I stayed right where I was.

215-235-255-275-285 beltless trap bar; no touch and go reps

Despite not feeling good yesterday and still being a bit under the weather, the deadlifts went very well. I should have added 5-10 pounds on the top set; the next time I should finally break that darn 300 mark with the trap bar.

Too nice outside to not play with the kettlebells: 20 DARC swings, 20 two hand flip catches, 20 around-the-leg uppercut tosses to head height (talk about a hamstring workout!) and 20 two hand bottoms up catches. Finished by trying some moves with the brand new 10# clubbell. I thought kettlebells could bite hard...this little beast swatted me and nearly put me down for the count. Once again my weak left side tried to get me in trouble; my grip and coordination on that side is really a problem. Oh well, another excuse to play with the club! :)

Second ever attempt at deadlifts went better than first. Used free bar instead of rack this time

Comment #8 - Posted by: Bob C. at May 7, 2004 10:17 AM

Coventional stance DL with no belt. Reset between reps. Bodyweight about 182.

225, 275, 315, 365

Tried 405 on the last set but my back and forearms were too sore from yesterday. I subbed tire flips for the run not knowing today would be deadlift day.

Deadlift 3-3-3-3-3 reps

135, 175, 185, 185, 185**

**New PR from 135. Still doing them SUMO style with grip inside the legs - not as comfortable (or stong) with grip outside the legs. Also found the weight extra heavy on the first lift, the next 2 reps are much smoother. Trying to really push the hips through on the first lift but still...
Any suggestions?

Finished the WOD with 5x 10 OHS with the empty 45# bar to Rock Bottom - working to improve form from Tues. WOD.

A new recruit here, reporting in with the first WOD.

225, 245, 265, 275, 245

I rounded my back a little on the fourth set, so I decreased the weight for the last one.

315-335-335-355-365

Warmed up by going through a few circuits of attempted muscleups on a pullup bar, situps, pushups, and 1-legged squats.

Bwt: 170

Comment #13 - Posted by: Cyrus at May 7, 2004 3:30 PM

Legs were shot from doing OH squats yesterday and then sparring last night. Still was able to go 10#'s over my last PR.

Jon I had the same problem until Coach and Robb helped me out. Give me a call Mon we'll go over it.

Comment #14 - Posted by: Jeff at May 7, 2004 3:35 PM

I'm a serious lightweight compared to most of the rest of you.

Warmed up with 95-12, 135-10

185-205-185-185-185

My weakness in DL is in core, lower back and upper back. Hardly feel legs yet. Will this just take time to develop??

Comment #15 - Posted by: Andy P at May 7, 2004 6:06 PM

275 300 300 300 315

felt okay.

Comment #16 - Posted by: Jeff W at May 7, 2004 6:07 PM

I'm in league with Andy here; my legs are not fatigued after this workout, yet I was only able to lift 175# all the way through. I can muscle out a set with 225#, but form is not what it should be. My grip is toasted after these deadlifts. Fromt what I can tell, I used proper form.

Comment #17 - Posted by: Daniel S at May 8, 2004 1:37 AM

Took Fri night off after a 35 min PT run and a cranky back, so Saturday night trap bar deads for
175x3
195x3
215x3
230x3
250x3
Pretty sad compared to my "glory days" but good for this creaky old back. Now off to do the scheduled squat/pushup WOD...

160, 170, 180, 190, 200 -- new PR.

Last time we worked up to max I did 205 for a single -- my form was a LOT better today.

Wish I did not wear my running shoes when I did these.

Comment #23 - Posted by: KEG at May 9, 2004 9:06 AM

You people in the 300 range, thats great. I assume this is just freehand, no wrist wraps? I hit about 300 and my grip is soo bad, my form is all screwed up. So, I lift at that range a couple of times so my forearms get work, then I switched and used wristwraps. I did 395-425 win about 8 sets of 3. Bw of 200. I am going to really push to increase my forearm strength. I havent DL heavy in over a year.

First time going above 225 without straps. Makes a HUGE difference. Almost seems like back and legs are not as strong without straps either, heh. Back still sore 2 days later. Tried to keep good form, sometimes hard to see.
