9 rounds - 65# push jerks/air squats + 1 round of 15 push jerks (not enough time remaining for the squats)

I tried using 80# for the push jerks but discovered during the warmup that they were turning into thrusters to move the weight. I never did find that perfect combination of push and balance; they took more effort than usual this morning.

Squats were done at an even pace until the final agonizing tabata-speed round. If I had picked up the squat pace a little sooner I could have had 10 full rounds...

7 Rounds - 95# push jerks
Broken set on the 5th push jerk. Came back and got the other two. First time for push jerks and form needs a lot of improvement. Did squats like Kelly, even until the last round. Probably should have pushed the squats harder but the push jerks were killing me.

Is a push Jerk a half squat into a shoulder press? Or do you drop into a squat and simultaniously push the weight up into shoulder press and stand?

6 rounds with less than a minute left so I did squats until time. Lat set had 64 squats.

Can someone describe a "Push Jerk"? I searched the site but could not find a description. Any help would be much appreciated!

Comment #5 - Posted by: KEG at February 29, 2004 8:00 AM

7 Rounds using the prescribed 95# push-jerk and air squats.

Comment #6 - Posted by: chad stclair at February 29, 2004 8:06 AM

6 rounds - 95lbs. Plus made 7 of the 15 push jerks for the seventh set. Really struggled on the push jerks, with broken set all the way through. Made 10 on the first set then barely made 5-6 on the first go for following sets. Air squats, also broken with me making 15-20 before breaking them down. Perhaps I should have went lighter on the weight for the push jerk?
Really nice when i was in a whole world of pain and there was 12 minutes left on the watch! Didnt get any better for the rest of the time either, and now my legs dont seem to work!
A nice WOD!!

Keg and Kris,

Look in the exercises link on the CF website. Click the presses video link. The push jerk is demonstrated there. I think it is the last one in the video.

Comment #8 - Posted by: Tony at February 29, 2004 8:12 AM

Only managed 6 rounds today. The push jerk is another one of those exercises that I can't seem to do very fast. When I do, it quickly becomes a push press. So, I just kept a moderate pace to do the correct form.

Comment #9 - Posted by: Tony at February 29, 2004 8:15 AM

The video wont come up on my computer, can someone please explain the push jerk? Thanks.

Comment #10 - Posted by: Mike at February 29, 2004 8:31 AM

Video link doesn't work on mine either.

I really miss Crossfit workouts. I've been in finnish army for the past 2 months and I've never been so sick in my entire life. Endless fever and flu. Oh well, here is my score:

load: 44lb and 9 rounds

Kris, Mike, KEG

There are brief descriptions of the O-lifts/variations at http://www.sunzeri.com/Exercises.htm

The description for the Push Jerk is in the lower half of the page.

Hope this helps.

Been fighting a cold/fever/body aches all week.

Scaled back to 65# x 10 reps, and 20 air squats.

7 rounds.

Still don't feel up to par. Lots of coughing and hacking. Icky!

Off to help with 4th grade math homework.

Never found out what push jerk was before I went to the gym.
Made up the squat power wod I didn't get to do because of group PT. All squats done below parallel as far as flexability would allow.

Warmed up with usual warmup plus front squats
Squat Pullups (10 for warmup)
5 85 5
5 85 5
3 95 5
3 95 5
2 115 5
2 115 5
1 125 5 (lost nerve to do more for squats, didn't want to risk injury or sacrifice form).

Comment #15 - Posted by: Kris F. at February 29, 2004 10:30 AM

6 rounds

90 LBs on push-jerks. Got 9 push-jerks on the 7th round before running out of time.

Comment #16 - Posted by: MikeY at February 29, 2004 10:58 AM

Opps. just watched the video, guess I did clean and presses every time! not to worry

Comment #17 - Posted by: Fish at February 29, 2004 11:06 AM

5 rounds @ 95#. Broken sets for push jerks: 10-5, 8-7, then 5-5-5 for last 3 rounds. Technique iffy to start with but improved in later rounds. Completed 5th round with less than 10" remaining.

Comment #18 - Posted by: steve h at February 29, 2004 11:10 AM

8 rounds with 95 pounds. Had to start breaking the push jerks at 10 on the 5 th round. Squats were slow , low steady and painful. Bwt 148 lbs

Comment #19 - Posted by: Ed Velasco at February 29, 2004 11:10 AM

Didn't have access to a bar this morning so I used 45 pound dumbells. 7 rounds

Comment #20 - Posted by: Jeff at February 29, 2004 11:30 AM

6 rounds with 75#. Collapsed in a heap afterwards. Tough workout.

Comment #21 - Posted by: ALeX at February 29, 2004 12:20 PM

6 rounds with all but the first push jerks broken into 9/6 or 8/7 then finished last 30 seconds with air squats. Thought about dropping the poundage but toughed it out.

Comment #22 - Posted by: dru at February 29, 2004 1:02 PM

First WOD for me.
Ran earlier and did some overhead squats afterwords so my legs were a little tired but I still managed 8 round with 80#.

Comment #23 - Posted by: Josh at February 29, 2004 2:09 PM

5 rounds @ 95, no broken rounds. Had a little time left over, but not enough to get another round out.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Matt G. at February 29, 2004 3:30 PM

9 rounds with 65# and one whack under the chin, a la Kelly. Took a bye on the squat workout; my back won't take squats - it barely handles getting up out of a chair these days!

Comment #25 - Posted by: Lynne Pitts at February 29, 2004 3:31 PM

This was my second WOD. 7 rounds 60#. Broken set on last three sets. My upper body strength needs work. 120 pulls, 120 dips?!

Comment #26 - Posted by: Michael B at February 29, 2004 5:22 PM

65#, 3 unbroken and 4 broken rounds, but the time was a little over -- 21:40 -- just couldn't let that last round go unfinished...

Comment #27 - Posted by: mark at February 29, 2004 5:34 PM

5 rounds with 40kg (about 88 lbs).

Comment #28 - Posted by: Joseph at February 29, 2004 11:08 PM

13 rounds. Broken sets throughout the first five. Oddly enough, picked up pace BIG TIME throughout the rest of the sets. 5 minutes of being spread out on the floor hyperventilating afterward ;)

Comment #29 - Posted by: Jay at March 1, 2004 3:08 AM

6 full rounds with 70 lbs and one extra round of push jerks. Just didn't have it today. Sucking wind the whole time....damn my legs are weak!

Comment #30 - Posted by: Todd at March 1, 2004 6:15 AM

5 rounds with 1" left over

80lb push jerks
30 air squats

not sure I had the correct technique for the push jerks .. a tough WOD

Comment #31 - Posted by: larry at March 1, 2004 10:32 AM

80 pounds, 6 rounds, breathing harder than I should. After a speech I gave once, containing some references to the Founders, a reporter asked was I comparing myself to them. I said that no one could fill their shoes, but we could all try to follow in their footsteps. That's how I feel about you, Kelly. Just great work. I'm still recovering from my first time, the other day, squatting with weight all the way to the floor (never had the right form before). Needless to say you blew me away on that one too. Just know I'm chasing.

Comment #32 - Posted by: adam at March 1, 2004 5:40 PM

6 rounds at 60#

Comment #33 - Posted by: trey at March 1, 2004 6:04 PM

65#, 5 rounds (5-5-5) plus 5 extra jerks. Squats even but slower and slower. Agonizing at the end.

Comment #34 - Posted by: Chris K at March 1, 2004 8:34 PM

7 rounds in 15 minutes (oops!)
Used 65 pound weight only cause I knew I wouldn't get more than 2 sets of 15 reps using 95. I'll work my way up in weight.

I have been training the cal poly SLO rugby team over the last 2 months on rugby skills with bits and pieces of crossfit training mixed in(tabata, wallball, kettlebell, trackwork) we have one more league match to finish up league play( undefeated thus far). The boys are starting to get ready for the playoff tourney. They will be training at the Crossfit SLO facility over the Next 6 weeks. I have run a couple of groups through fight gone bad and a couple through this workout as a precursor to the tourney.
Today 2 boys approx 22 years old went through 8 full rounds with 95LBs. I believe there will be several with this capability. However, there are some that will meet pukie on a regular basis.

1st posting, and been following crossfit on and off for two years. I am committing myself to the crossfit method. I will post my meager results and plan to join the the ranks of great crossfitters like greg " the beast" Amundson, & and Robb "the Jackal" Wolfe, By the end of this year. Aiming high cause anything less would be uncivilized.

Keep up the awesome work coach. and everyone keep the support coming

8 Rounds.
75#'s
Nice and warm in Jax!

P.M. Run

Comment #39 - Posted by: Weathington at March 4, 2004 8:05 AM

8 rounds w/95 lbs.
All sets after the first one broken either as 5-5-5 or 8-7
Got 8 with 45 seconds left, so, like Gunnar, I ground out as many squats as possible up to 20 minute mark (60 in last round).

A great WOD.
