October's CrossFit Journal, "Team Workouts: 6 Weeks of CrossFit for 10," lends PT instructors in the military/law enforcement and sports teams/clubs a hand in implementing CrossFit. Here Greg Amundson and Loyd Lewis demonstrate an effective spotting technique for the "two man pull-up," a staple of our group workouts.

Not a good day here.
I managed to "tweak" the left ankle yesterday. This morning it is difficult to walk with out trying double unders or substitutes, cleans, step ups, squats, or anything else requiring movement and pressure.
I settled for practicing L sits - well, the sit part is okay - on my new parallettes. I also managed 165 ab crunches in the 5 minute time allotment for situps.
Tomorrow will be a better day.
Kelly, set a nice high target for the rest of the gang.
Have a good day all.
Well Gary, I definitely set a high target this morning. If laughter was part of today's WOD, I bet I win. I haven't jumped a rope since grade school and that was forever ago. I spent most of the time untangling myself from the rope - it even ended up around my ears once. I am such a klutz!
I think I did some double unders, but I'm not sure. I do know I'm really uncoordinated...How do boxers make it look so easy? I was pleased to count 71 singles in a row!
Abmat situps: 57-42-27-16.
I was glad for a less intense WOD (largely because I can barely jump a rope, much less double-unders); my traps are toast and my lower back and butt aren't much better after yesterday's effort.
On double unders I'm curious are people doing consecutive double unders? I find that I need a single turn after each double.
Mike,
I think the goal is to be able to do consecutive double-unders, non-stop. I usually string together a few double-unders in a row, then miss one (i.e., attach the rope to my chin, shin, etc.), start up again with a few singles, and then do some more double-unders.
If you look at the video, that guy is doing double-unders without pausing at all or going into singles.
I actually think it's easier to go for consecutive double-unders than a single-double-single-double type of routine because the rhythm's more constant. There was a guy on my team back in college that could do consecutive double-unders 'til the cows came home. He'd always say it was just a rhythm thing.
Mike (another Mike)
Had to do a different workout today, because I left earlier for the gym and the WOD hadn't posted. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise. With my tailbone still hamburger from the WOD with the 5 rounds of 40 situps, I don't think I would have done very well. So I did the 3 rounds of 400m run, 21 50lbs. DB swing (no kettlebell), and 12 pullups. I ended up getting :09::44. I had to break up the pullups; that is what killed my time. Still, I think with a more concentrated effort on my pullups over the next few weeks, I can get this time down significantly. See you all tomorrow.
I'm assuming that the WOD is one big round today, with technically no resting between any segments (minimizing transition time between movements and the time it takes us to record our numbers). All we need to do is post the total number of double unders and total number of situps for the whole thing. Is that right? Or is it better to report the numbers by segment (e.g. 2 min segment, 90 sec, etc.) like what Kelly did?
It's my first month, I've been doing 50% of load so far, but today I might try 100%.
Didn't have a jump rope (I lost it! ;_;) so I made up my own trampoline workout. Did 4 sets of backflips (20-15-10-5) for a total of 50 flips. Got me breathing pretty hard, and didn't take long at all.
I reeeeeally really really really miss not being able to do the WOD, though, and it's only been 1 day! It's an addiction, I tell you!
Well, you never know you can do something until you try it. I can do double unders! It was a little difficult at the start but by the time the 30 second round came I was able to do it nonstop for about 20+ seconds. Situps were as follows 52, 31, 26, 18.
I failed to do even a single double-under! After much frustration, I just jumped single-unders, jumping as high as I could. That will take some dedicated practice.
Sit-ups I alternated with roman chairs to save my still-sore tail: 35, 27, 22, 11
Me and a friend did this today-his first WOD. Wasn't as intense for me because most of the time was spent learning technique and struggling with fumbles. Friend did well cuz he had more jump rope experience.
Me:
double unders: 12-9-9-7
situps: 56-36-16-14
Friend:
double unders: 28-29-16-15
situps: 40-28-18-10
I cant do double unders so i just did singles.
Jump rope:2min/204
90sec./147
1min/125
30sec./70
sit-ups: 2min/90
90sec./61
1min./51
30sec./27
Falling behind again. I felt like crap the day this was posted so I took a sick day. This is one of those that looks easy on paper, at least to me it did. However, it got me breathing extremely hard, extremely quick. Still can't do consecutive double-unders yet so I alternated with singles, counting the doubles only (still got tied up pretty often). Rounds went as follows
1st round 71 double unders, 86 sit ups
2nd round 47, 56
3rd round 31, 39
4th round 17, 24
A day behind...
Yup, double-unders are definitely a skill I have yet to master.
Round 1: 22/48
Round 2: 14/28
Round 3: 10/23
Round 4: 12/14
Mike
It took a while for them to come back to me but towards the end they were flowing together pretty well.
Round 1: 55/48
Round 2: 46/37
Round 3: 32/25
Round 4: 32/12
Sprinted as hard as possible on the schwinn airdyne in replacement of the rope.
Situps:Rd #1 75
Rd #2 63
Rd #3 44
Rd #4 22
Did something a little different.
For those, like me, who can't quite get the double-unders yet, I found single-unders to be a good compromise till I can get doubles. When doing single-unders, I speed up the rope and jump singles without the little stutter skip. Leaves me pretty breathless in about 30 secs.
Did the rope work alone cause it was fixin to rain. Rope 2:00-rest 2:00; rope 90-rest 90; etc.
Finished in time before it started raining.
Went inside and started over with the WOD protocol using push-ups & sit-ups.
Forgot to count. Bad habit of mine, but felt good and got some push-up practice in there.
First round 80 doubles , 50 situps. Second round 56 doubles, 33 situps. Third 58 doubles, 20 situps. Fourth 31 doubles, 12 situps. 225 doubles 115 situps total.
Forgot to add that doing double jumps is just like anything else practice. When you miss just start over. If you think doing double jumps are hard try doing double crosses , this will help your coordination and make regular double jumps seem easy. Of course start off doing regular crosses after you master them go to double crosses.
1st Round (2:00): 58 double-unders, 54 situps
2nd Round (1:30): 48 double-unders, 46 situps
3rd Round (1:00): 36 double-unders, 28 situps
4th Round (0:30): 25 double-unders, 18 situps
Not a true killer WOD (of course, I'm not exactly posting the best numbers up here, either).
Like Ryan, I favor the "alternating" pattern for doing double-unders (one single, one double . . . you only count the doubles). I find I can get more in that way than just blasting away at consecutive double-unders . . . doing consecutives, I get exhausted pretty damn quick and miss. I did try to do consecutives for the last 30 seconds though . . . figured I could last that long. (I was wrong.)
George, I can't even imagine what double-under crosses would look like. I can do single crosses (sometimes). Do you cross and then un-cross for the second rotation of the double? Or do you (somehow) do both rotations with arms crossed?
Tweaked my back (a genuine glass back, it is) Sunday digging boulders out of the driveway, so this WOD was a blessing.
1: 92/36 (of Pitts Patented 1 jump forward/1 jump backward double unders)
2: 37/70 (more coordinated PPj's)
3: 22/45
4: 16/26
Soon, consecutive dub-unders will be mine!
