Defense

There are two CrossFit Defense courses:

Athlete Course Overview

"The ability to protect yourself or a loved one is the most important skill you hope you'll never need to use."

CrossFitters train for the unknown and unknowable, but elite fitness does not guarantee personal safety. If CrossFit is the study of human movement, CrossFit Defense is the study of human movement as it relates to violence, fear and aggression. Coach Tony Blauer created a physiology and instinct-based system (the SPEAR System) that is the seamless interface between the high-intensity CrossFit protocol and the ingrained human self-defense system. It is the only personal-defense system in the world based on the body’s physiological response to danger. Athletes are taught close-quarters skills (no fighting drills) and learn fun, dynamic and effective drills that are extremely effective for anyone of any age who may have to defend himself or herself.

Learning Objectives v

The Defense Athlete Course teaches participants to:

  1. Improve awareness – learn how to detect and avoid danger by improving awareness and make practical tactical choices regarding personal safety.
  2. Defuse and deescalate – learn simple strategies to resolve common conflicts and position oneself in a morally and legally tactical position.
  3. Manage fear and aggression – learn to identify and manage fear using Coach Blauer’s Cycle of Behavior. Learn how to “flip the switch” to generate aggression and intensity to protect oneself or a loved one.
  4. SPEAR System tools and tactics – learn physiology-based skills and drills for self-protection.
  5. The CrossFit Connection – learn to apply CrossFit’s core-to-extremity principles for self-protection.
  6. CrossFit’s hidden arsenal – learn how to use CrossFit movements to mirror simple and effective personal-defense movements.
  7. Target and accuracy – learn to use common CrossFit equipment, such as the medicine-ball, to develop dynamic speed and accuracy for personal-defense skills.
  8. Defense Conditioning ("D-WOD") – learn how to put realistic combinations together with a training partner in a safe, educational and challenging format that also incorporates accuracy, agility, balance and speed into a scenario-based self-defense workout.

Trainer Course Overview

"The ability to protect yourself or a loved one is the most important skill you hope you'll never need to use."

Coach Tony Blauer created CrossFit Defense – the study of human movement as it relates to fear and aggression. It is based on the body’s natural response to danger. The Trainer Course focuses on the SPEAR System’s drills to develop mental and physical strength and endurance, as well as how to teach these skills to members using CrossFit movements, terminology, and teaching methods. In addition, attendees learn the fear-management techniques that underpin the SPEAR System. The Trainer Course adds diversity to one’s programming and, more importantly, enhances the safety of one’s athletes.

Each day includes breakout sessions for demonstration and drilling of the SPEAR System. The lectures, demonstrations, presentations and breakouts all serve to expose the participants to CrossFit Defense’s foundational movements. The scenario-inspired drill sessions reinforce the practical application of the course content. Events rotate hourly (approximately) making for two dynamic and intensive training days.

Football

Overview

This course is an introduction to the concepts, movements and level of intensity needed to be successful in training for sport. In the course, participants are provided with a foundation for training athletes. They are taught the fundamentals of sport-specific training, including sprinting, basic movements, warm-ups and cool downs, change-of-direction and agility drills, jumping and weightlifting. Participants are given information on programming, nutrition and diet, and film study. Film study demonstrates the practical application of the CrossFit movements to football and other power sports. Anyone who trains groups that are required to be strong, agile and powerful can benefit from this course, no matter the level of athletes.

Learning Objectives v

The Football Course teaches participants to:

  1. Understand the most effective way to utilize CrossFit for sport-specific athletes.
  2. Learn how to effectively implement the CrossFit Football program’s “plug and play” strength-and-conditioning template in a gym and/or team environment.
  3. Build competency when implementing CrossFit Football’s warm-up progressions, which can also be used as diagnostic tools for identifying an athlete’s limiting factors.
  4. Develop competency in the major multi-jointed barbell movements: the squat, deadlift, bench press and power clean, including the ability to teach, see and correct proper mechanics.
  5. Utilize recovery as a necessary part of training. This extends to, but is not limited to, intelligent training, nutrition, stretching, identifying limiting factors and mobility.

Prerequisites

All registered athletes need to be able to sprint and change direction.

Advanced Trainer Course Overview

This is an extension of the CrossFit Gymnastics Trainer Course and bridges the gap from training to sport. It is grounded in prerequisite strength, safe coaching and technique to produce powerful movement and efficiency in skill work. Attendees are given an overall understanding of human movement based on the advanced application of gymnastics training, not only in other areas of CrossFit training but also in sport and life.

The seminar facilities feature an array of equipment and the required safety nets for training the advanced movements requested by the CrossFit community: in-ground trampolines, overhead suspension gear, ring trainers, matting, ropes, spring floors, rod floors, a tumbling pit, an air track, and indoor and outdoor CrossFit training facilities. The coaching ratio is 5:1, which allows for lots of personal instruction. The skills covered include acrobatics, strap work, balances, mushroom work, tumbling, trampoline skills, and bar and ring variations. Novice and accomplished CrossFit athletes alike will acquire a more comprehensive gymnastics skill set for use in their own athletic development or that of their clients.

Overview

This one-day seminar is a hands-on, movement-theory-based workshop in which coaches and athletes are exposed to the principles of Kelly Starrett's movement and mobility method of resolving pain, preventing injury, and optimizing athletic performance.

Performance can be brought to an abrupt halt by dysfunctional movement patters and underlying restrictions in mobility. Oftentimes, the factors that impede performance are invisible to not only the untrained eye, but also to the majority of athletes and coaches. This course exposes attendees to a systematic approach to making these factors visible. This course illuminates common movement errors that can cause injury and reduce an athlete’s speed, power, endurance and strength. This course teaches anyone – be it a weekend warrior, professional athlete, or someone wanting to be free from current restrictions – how to best maintain natural function and harness genetic potential.

Learning Objectives v

The Mobility Trainer Course teaches participants to:

  1. Prevent and rehabilitate common athletic injuries.
  2. Overhaul movement habits efficiently to use the body's most effective physiology.
  3. Quickly identify, diagnose and fix inefficient movement patterns.
  4. Problem solve for pain and dysfunction.
  5. Fix poor mechanics that rob power, bleed force and dump torque.
  6. Unlock athletic capacity previously unused.
  7. Identify and fix poor movement patterns in children.
  8. Develop strategies that restore function to joints and tissues.
  9. Develop effective individual and group mobility programming.

Prerequisites

None.

Price: US$349

Language: This course is only available in English.

Powerlift

Overview

This course is for the athlete and trainer interested in learning and incorporating the methods used by Louie Simmons of Westside Barbell. A large focus of the course is on the three major lifts: back squat, deadlift and bench press, although instruction is applicable to all strength training. The course also includes numerous assistance exercises (box squat, bands for lifts, sleds, ropes, etc.). Participants also learn about the Conjugate system: how to vary exercises, volume and loadings to develop top-end strength. All presented methods can be used with CrossFit to help increase one’s overall fitness.

Learning Objectives v

The Powerlifting Course teaches participants to:

  1. Understand how to develop special strength from explosive strength, speed strength and strength speed, as well as to understand at what velocities they are trained.
  2. Use the power lifts with proper technique and select the correct special exercises to enhance the CrossFit athlete.
  3. Increase loads on the Olympic lifts by special means and accommodating resistance.
  4. Apply the concepts of the Conjugate system by revolving large and small exercises, as well as to understand proper loading of volume and how to change the intensity zones.
  5. Know how to apply a circa-max wave and use the delayed-transformation phase leading into competition.

Striking

Overview

The Striking Trainer Course teaches participants how to increase overall fitness, core strength, and rotational speed and power by incorporating striking drills into CrossFit workouts. Striking movements are some of the most functional core movements because punching and kicking with true power, speed and accuracy require people to utilize their entire body. This is why fighters are some of the most well conditioned and powerful athletes in the world.

With this in mind, the Striking Trainer Course is designed to give participants the ability to teach athletes the basic striking concepts of mixed martial arts, boxing and self-protection. The course also teaches ways to incorporate these skills into workouts for greater variance. All this is done in a non-contact format that focuses on proper technique by using shadow boxing, focus mitts, kick shields and a heavy bag.

Learning Objectives v

The CrossFit Striking Trainer Course teaches participants to:

  1. Achieve a fighter's fitness level.
  2. Add variety to CrossFit workouts.
  3. Throw proper strikes and combinations.
  4. Understand the role of the kinetic chain and the posterior chain in supporting athletic performance and fighting.
  5. Increase the speed and power of strikes, regardless of experience.
  6. Teach proper striking mechanics to clients.
  7. Safely run a training session involving striking skills and drills.
  8. Teach essential self-protection skills to athletes.
  9. Effectively use shadow boxing, focus mitts and a heavy bag.

Strongman

Overview

This one-day course is for athletes and coaches who want become more proficient with strongman movements. The typical strongman competition consists of five events in one day, and each event is less than 60 seconds. This is a perfect – and fun – way for CrossFitters to increase strength without using a barbell. Because of the often-awkward size, shape and consistency of the objects in strongman, the lifts tend to have less efficiency than those done with a barbell. These loads challenges the neuromuscular system in a way a barbell cannot and better mimic challenges found outside the gym. Participants learn to lift Atlas stones, carry a yoke and farmers handles, flip tires, and clean and press odd objects such as a log, keg, anvil or stone at their relative level of strength. Additional topics discussed include how to incorporate these movements into CrossFit workouts.

Learning Objectives v

The Strongman Trainer Course teaches participants:

  1. Safe, proper and efficient movement using strongman objects.
  2. How to coach strongman movements.
  3. How to incorporate CrossFit Strongman training methodology and programming.

Prerequisites

None.

Price: US$395

Language: This course is only available in English.
