The progression from bar-dip to ring dip is analogous to the progression from handstand on parallettes or p-bars to handstand on rings. We're working towards handstand presses on the rings.
The payoff for this work is greatly improved balance and uncanny strength. Here's a piece from USA Gymnastics on Still Ring Handstands:
