CrossFit Rochester steps into the CrossFit Affiliate Snapshot.

Affiliate Name: CrossFit Rochester.

Affiliate Owner: Joe Celso.

Affiliate Since: December 2006.

Location: Right now we're in Fairport, NY (suburb of Rochester) . . . might be moving soon.

Square Footage: 1700.

Number of Members? A little over 100.

Number of Trainers? 1 full-time, 4 part-time (2 male / 3 female).

Describe your gym culture in one word: Supportive.

Most used piece of gear in your gym? We spread the love pretty well, but I think the barbells get used the most.

Advice you wish you had been given: Let people or get people to help you. Tips on finding space and dealing with towns would be helpful too.

What question you would love to ask other affiliate owners: How do you clone yourself?

Workout or movement that elicits the most groans in your affiliate: My favorite B.C. (Before CrossFit) workout was something I call the dumbbell moto (my attempt to re-create a motocross race with dumbells). We use it as a warm-up once in a while and it seems to be the one thing that's unanimously hated. There's always at least one person that doesn't mind burpees or thinks that Turkish get-ups are cool.

Coolest WOD: Toss up between Fight Gone Bad and the 12 Days of Christmas . . . seems EVERYONE gets rev'd up for those two.

Favorite CrossFit saying: "The ass is mightier than the elbow."

Complete the sentence: CrossFit should . . . keep doing what it's doing. This movement is a monster and I think HQ is doing a great job of letting it develop and keeping it pure.

Great gym and a quality coach. You can trace almost all the affiliates in the Rochester area back to Joe. Still waiting for that Rochester Crossfit Series!

Joe nice to see this buddy!

Joe runs a great gym. The word to describe the culture: "Supportive" is DEFINITELY spot on.

He gives just enough push to get you out of your comfort zone, but within the safety zone.

I wish him great succcess.

Joe is a great coach and the gym has come a long way even since I became addicted in 2008. There are some new affiliates located closer to me, but CrossFit Rochester is worth the drive! Joe knows his stuff.

Dumbell Moto? Never heard of it...(I wish). Best coach and best gym by a mile.

How 'bout those Rochester Games Joe??? Let's get a little affiliate competition going.

Nice gym, Joe's a good guy. Kinda sick of seeing that VAN EVERYWHERE I go though. haha.

That singlet is awful.

Thank-you all for the kind words.

The games are coming... dealing with space issues and the real CF Games first.

Comment #12 - Posted by: Joe Celso at March 28, 2011 11:36 AM

Joe is a great guy, part of what keeps me going is the way he trains, he knows what he is talking about and you can tell

Comment #13 - Posted by: Alyssa S at March 28, 2011 11:40 AM

CF Rochester rocks! Joe's a great guy and knows his stuff. He's created a great gym with great people. He should get commission on all the "spin off" gyms in town. Keep up the great work!

Comment #14 - Posted by: AlliO at March 28, 2011 1:26 PM

Awesome gym. Inspiring people. Joe brings a super high level of knowledge and expertise that is critical to making progress -- safely. That and the occasional kick in the rear has done wonders for me!

Comment #15 - Posted by: Erin D at March 28, 2011 2:26 PM

Whoa! I dunno about spin-offs and commissions...

I'd say knowing that I've inspired some folks to follow my lead and earned the respect of my peers is payment enough.

Thanks again, everyone!

I am one of he old ladies of the gym.. Joe understands how to train and motivate the youngest member to the oldest . The culture breeds SUPPORT from the most awesome long time cross fitter to the newest of our CF family . It all begins with JOE..

Comment #18 - Posted by: Lisa Fitzgerald at March 28, 2011 7:40 PM

My favorite quote is, "You can rest all day!"
Crossfit changed my life and how I view fitness and Joe encouraged and supported that. He knew it wasn't easy for me, but knew to push me - while correcting my form. It was all new to me and I love our supportive xfit family! Way to go, Joe!!

Comment #19 - Posted by: Janel Kratky at March 29, 2011 10:23 AM

I have totally transformed myself in the three years I have been going to CrossFit Rochester. As one of the "elder" members, I can say that no matter how old you are, you can still get in shape! Thanks to Joe for pushing me and making me believe in myself...if you commit to it, he will commit to you!
(Burpees still suck!)

Comment #20 - Posted by: Tom C at March 29, 2011 10:35 AM

i am in paris, france, where there is a lot of wine, cheese, bread, butter and no crossfit...wtf?? i'd give anything for a kick in the ass (which is stronger than the elbow) from the best coach i've ever had. way to go, joe!

Comment #21 - Posted by: sonnick at March 29, 2011 2:34 PM

I agree! Joe is great & this is a gym I am proud to be a member of!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Sarah N at March 29, 2011 4:09 PM

As Joe says crossfit is the fountain of youth. Thanks to Joe's encouragement and training I was able to participate in the crossfit Masters 2010 games. I truly am a junky. BTW I like dumbbell Moto

Comment #23 - Posted by: mary at March 29, 2011 5:00 PM

Got my start at CF Rochester and let me tell you, Joe knows technique better than anyone, IMO. Respect of your peere, Joe? If I count as maybe a peer you've certainly got it from me.

Comment #24 - Posted by: Bill at March 30, 2011 10:58 AM

There are a lot of CF gyms in the area but none compare and it's all because of Joe. Joe's intensity, knowledge and challenging workouts make it fun to show up every morning at 5am! Keep up the great work Joe.

Comment #25 - Posted by: Darren at March 31, 2011 6:32 PM

Joe helped me get to the very first crossfit games-masters level 2010. thanks Joe
