CrossFit South Cobb (GA), doing what we all dream about doing with the Big Tire.

Brains and brawn: always a nice combo. Read about Antigone ("Tig") at CrossFit Alberta (Canada): "Lots of Hard Work On the 'Brains' Side of Things."

Affiliate Scenario: You walk into your affiliate one morning and it's apparent that the coaches did not clean the mats after last night's class. The first members of the 6am class are starting to pull into the parking lot, but you're embarrassed by the condition of the gym. What do you do? A quick mop while the members are warming up? Ignore the nasty chalk and dried sweat by making everyone use the other (cleaner) end of the mats? Greet every member at the door with a kettlebell and tell them you have a great outdoor WOD planned for the parking lot?

Thanks for putting that up Lis.

Outside! And try not to be distracted by your desire to 'mop the floor' with the evening staff. Sorry, bad one.

I know Miles over there at CFSouthCobb. Great affiliate and a special group of fire breathers over there!

As a business owner the decision needs to be based on what is best for the members (customer). Crossfit is a community and given the chance the always pull together. With their help they would have the place looking great in no time.

In the gym I train in, I have come to understand that its going to be dirty... There is usually chalk everywhere... Sometimes we have animals and we have kids classes... but we train anyway, regardless. When we are finished, then we shower!!! Its all good :)

Who mops the floor every night... that takes about 3 hours at our box! We do it once a week.

what about an affiliate that never cleans the floors, and runs 50-80 people through every day? I used to go to one, it was disgustingly filthy. Its as if the grosser they get the more hardcore they are. I think its why they have very few female members and a very low retention rate after their on ramp. They claim mopping is hard work and 'expensive'. They dont even have fundementals like a first aid kit or difibulaor, so of course cleaning is not thought of. I grew up mopping and doing manual labor, this would take minutes. When given the suggestion to simply run a mop over an area after each class, they said that that just wouldnt work, and offered the suggestion of handing every one in the class wipes and asking them to clean the area they worked out in, really? Being lucky enough to have been to the original HQ, things were cleaned and put away and well maintained, call me old fashioned but to me this is the way a box should be run. I have been to several affiliates who mop immediately as a class ends, even asking clients to mop their area. This works fine and takes little time.

I see a couple of things here:
First, if it your policy for the last trainers or someone mop daily and they did not, that would need to be dealt with.
If they knew they were not going to be able to do the mopping they should have let you know or made other arrangements. This shows lack of RESPECT and is unprofessional.

As for the morning members: Unless you do a full mop of the floors between every class, there should be little difference from them working out and the last class working out in the evening.

If you have the ability to go outside and you feel it is necessary, than do it. As the owner, you will need to make the judgment of what your members expect and what they feel is acceptable conditions of the gym.

just as an aside, we tend to mop once a day in the afternoon.

45 seconds into the next class, it looks as if its never been cleaned. Its so unfair.

mind you Bill, i like the idea of getting the class more involved.

as always, very useful thoughts and info.

Thanks for the very useful scenario today, Lisbeth. We do our best to mop wall to wall once per week(under every kb, db and bumper plate), keep dirt and dust down by vacuuming every day or two (ropes shed worse than the hairiest dog, btw) and spot mop up sweat after each class.
In this particular case I would just modify the warm up, sending the class outside for a easy DIY run while tidying up, and then get on with the day.
Cleaning Sucks, but is a definite necessity.
