MaD CrossFit (Matt and Donna Dyson) steps into the CrossFit Affiliate Snapshot.
Affiliate Since: December 2008.
Location: Wellington, New Zealand.
Sq Ft: 2000.
Number of Members? 22 and growing each week.
How many times have you moved your affiliate location? Does moving all our equipment from Massachusetts to New Zealand count? Then 3.
Number of Trainers? 2
Greatest joy as a CrossFit affiliate: Most clients walking through the door have never been exposed to CrossFit. We have them sign up for a minimum of 3x per week. It's amazing to see the transformation in their body, attitude and confidence. I love going to work everyday! I feel so proud when I see someone reach a goal they have been working so hard to achieve, even if it's just getting out of a chair unassisted.
Keep reading! There's more!
Biggest worry as a CrossFit affiliate: Getting new clients. We are not great at marketing ourselves, but we're trying.
Do you Facebook? Or Twitter? FB.
Do you blog daily? Not live, but yes.
If you had Coach Greg Glassman's ear, what would you ask him? When are you coming to New Zealand for a 101?
If you could give new CrossFit affiliates one piece of advice, what would it be? Keep your overhead low, so you can build the business you WANT. There is nothing worse than pressure to pay your bills, and feeling like you have to cling to every client. That kind of pressure changes you as a coach and a person.
Complete the sentence: CrossFit is . . . addictive.
Biggest lesson you've learned as a small business owner: We have no idea how to market ourselves. We have asked our clients for their help, thank you all for that. Having your clients spread the word is better than any billboard or ad in a fitness magazine.
Using 3 words or less, describe your affiliate culture: Form before intensity.
Gym dog? Or no gym dog? Hell's yes to gym dogs! We have 2 pugs that come in each night, and well behaved dogs are always welcome.

Glad to see Matt and Donna are doing well! I saw them at one of our CFNE throwdowns before they left...come back and visit soon!
Matt and Donna rock!
Hard working & great people too :-)
Can't wait to do a WOD or two at your box -
P.S Love seeing NZ affiliates on the blog, but I am biased ;-)
Matt and Donna are great trainers and even better people - NZ is lucky to have them!
Matt and Donna are the best! Good to hear the gym is growing. Come back to CFED soon and we'll get a WOD on!
I agree with everything Matt and Donna said - form before intensity, start small and grow, market through your atheletes and save your $ for equipment. Grow slow so the growing pains aren't so big. Best of luck in NZ
I loved what Donna said about building the business that you WANT. That really hit home with me because my brother and I definitely could have done some things different at the start to not have to "cling" to every client. I think that when we started drawing a line and letting people know that there would be a wrong and a right way of gong about things in our box that there is a different feel now. Yesterday I had a guy who right in the middle of reviewing the push jerk, walked over and read a text message and then started responding. I know what he does for a living and I know that his text could wait another 20 minutes. This was not the first time. Once he walked over in the middle of the wod and started doing the same thing. So this morning I told him how good he has been doing and what progress I have seen him make. Then I told him that if it ever happened again during the 45 minutes that he is in our box, I would ask him nicely to leave. The best part is that although we would lose his money, I don't need to put up with it. We moved past the point of catering to everybody's different attitudes and personalities just to have their money, and there is definitely a change in the overall feel in our box. Now that doesn't mean that I go around telling everybody to go kick rocks, but we do have a better idea of what we want and what kind of person we don't want.
BTW I'm gonna look into moving our aff to new Zealand, wow I'm jealous.
Box looks great!!! Miss you guys, NZ is lucky to have you!!
Great Job Matt and Donna!
Traveling out here we spent time with affiliates from all over the US. It was a great learning experience. NZ affiliates have been just as welcoming. Thanks for all your support!
Don't tell my parents but you guys are the number one reason I have to come back to Lower Hutt.
Thanks for the work you've done with my entire family.
Heck yes to gym dogs
They lick up all the excess sweat
From someone who works out at MaD - this gym is awesome! Great coaches who know their stuff and know how to be sensible too. I'm loving working out there (first time I've ever actually enjoyed sweating!) and meeting everyone else. Ka pai.
Matt and Donna have done good. I have been watching crossfit for a while on youtube etc and seen it growing in Auckland and other centers in NZ except Wellington. When I got word MaD where setting up shop I was in.
I'd been use to training with my kettlebells on my own and now I get to train hard and learn proper technique with like minded people.
Form first. Rep-perfect. Go faster. Not my words, Donna's.
Cher.
You guys are awesome! I can't wait to get back to the MaD box. Well worth the flight from Darwin, Australia.
Yeah to the pugs! I am a fairly new crossfitter and my friend goes to private sessions once a week. My pug and I go with him to watch, so Billy is our unofficial gym dog.
