Bob Guere, owner of CrossFit California City, steps into the CrossFit Affiliate Snapshot.

  • Affiliate Since: February 28, 2009

  • Location: California City, CA, USA

  • Sq Ft: ~350

  • Number of Members: 12 at the garage plus 1 Soccer Team of ~24.

  • How many times have you moved your affiliate location? None.

  • Greatest joy as a CrossFit affiliate: Watching my kids (teens) ENJOY fitness. We (adult CrossFitters) all say how we wish we had CrossFit when we were young. Well, these kids do, and it's my duty to make sure this remains with them as they mature into young adults. The health and fitness habits that we coach with nutrition and WODs are indispensable. This is how we'll change the world. If "CrossFit" by name were to crumble tomorrow, the seeds of a healthy level of fitness that we are sowing in our kids will reap benefits none of us can imagine. I believe this is the highest call of our profession.

  • Biggest worry as a CrossFit affiliate: My training background is in martial arts. While I'm not new to training folks, I'm new to CrossFit and Strength & Conditioning. I worry that I won't give the right advice, or I'll find myself in a situation where I am so under-educated that I can't help somebody. To try to solve this, I am persistent in my tracking of other's programming, I ask advice from other trainers, and I read whatever I can (mostly blogs) to keep the information flow going. Not doing this will lead to my BIGGEST worry, and that's coaching someone into injury. I know I'm cautious enough and try very hard to be attentive enough, but I still worry about that.
  • Do you Facebook? Only on days ending in "Y" and only about 18 hours a day. In other words, yes. More than the CF discussion board ever did for me, it keeps trainers and CrossFitters connected and networked like no other technology yet.
  • Do you Twitter? Not really, no . . . I don't see the point. I have a twitter account, but am still baffled by its lack of purpose.
  • If you had Coach Greg Glassman's ear, what would you ask him? I would ask him for a list of 50 training tips for a variety of CrossFit movements. As the CrossFit pioneer, he has seen and heard it all more than any of us, and therefore must have a solution to many still-common training faults, and straight-forward ways to implement those solutions.
  • If you could give new CrossFit affiliates one piece of advice, what would it be? An abundance of equipment does not a good affiliate make! Your success lies in your clients, whomever they happen to be. That group of folks will determine your programming, your scaling, the level of performance and the challenges you will encounter. All the planning in the world is useless if you're not planning for the right situation. Know your clients, their abilities and limitations, and build your affiliate around them.
  • What does your gym need more of? PRs!!!! Never enough PRs.
  • What does your gym need less of? Nagging, chronic injuries that come with starting CrossFit as 30-somethings. And less dirt. Dang desert.
  • Chalk? Or no chalk? Chalk.

Nice job Bob - it's not always the "biggest" or "best" gyms that do the most for their athletes. It's nice to see a small garage gym doing the best for your athletes - I can tell you really care about your athletes and want the best for them. Every CrossFit gym should (and does, as far as I know) put their clients first. Keep up the great work Bob - you'll be fine - keep learning, not only about fitness, but from your athletes.

BTW - I really enjoy these snapshots

Great Job Bob! CrossFit Solano has always been a fan of CrossFit California City, we love the "Why do I CrossFit?" articles. As a father to be I can't wait to see my daughter grow up surrounded by highly motivated, positive, CrossFitting Adults. Now if I could just get my garage as clean as yours I'd be all set!

Bob, You have been quite an example to my wife & I. We are transferring to Astoria, Orgeon and plan on setting up our garage like yours and affiliating. I have also been doing CrossFit with my kids. Nothing motivates me more during a WOD than when I have my two teenage sons watching. This is where the rubber hits the road. Thanks for sharing with us.

now that is the way a proper garage gym should look! very professional and has the look of a bigger box. nicely done.

Yes Jen,.... I am a bad @ss. Technically, I'm "ninja".... the adjective. Apparently this is a new adjective, I need to talk to my daughter to clarify.

Thanks for the kind words everybody. It's always comforting to know folks appreciate the "right" kind of box.

I'm uber-excited to be headed to the Arnold Expo next month. If you're in the Columbus area, make plans to stop by and see us, and don't forget about a little thing called "the Sectionals", also being held at the Arnold Expo.

I love meeting CrossFitters, especially since I live in the middle of nowhere, and don't get to mingle with you all as often as I would like. So get your butts to the Arnold!

Bob you are the MAN...Facebook has most definitely strengthened the connectivity aspect of the Crossfit community, now we can share ideas/stories/hang-ups with other CF'ers very quickly

Good to see Bob featured here, he is a good man and always learning about the best ways to improve his training for his members and himself. A testament that you don't have to have a large gym and a huge client base to be considered a success.

I was so excited to see this! My husband owns CrossFit Valdosta... I grew up in Cal City! My dad was stationed at Edwards AFB for 14 years. Cal City was so small when I was there! I plan on visiting my BF who lives in Boron now soon, so I will plan a trip to check out CrossFit California City!

Sweet space Bob! Starting from your garage is the best way to learn and grow the "right" way!

Wish you and your family success, health and happiness!!

I don't know Bob and had never heard of CrossFit California City until today, but I like his attitude and approach. Sweet little set-up there Bob ... keep up the good work!

I'm glad you featured Bob. I appreciate Bob's attitude, support, diligence, contributions to the CrossFit community, and most importantly his friendship.

As one of Bob's clients, it thrills me to see him featured here. CFCC is my first experience with CrossFit and after my first day with Bob, I was hooked. His attitude is awesome and he is constantly encouraging us to do our best - to reach for a PR, to always take it to the next level. The best part is that we're not working out in a cold warehouse gym environment. Bob opens up his home to his clients and its easy to feel like part of his family (probably because we all work out together). I know its a hike to the middle of the Mojave desert, but CFCC is definitely worth the detour.

Looks Great Bob!!!

Awesome affiliate profile Lisbeth! Nice to see a new, smaller gym being profiled.

Bob, my main concern when training my clients has always been their inability to get into proper position due to muscle imbalances and mobility issues. Kelly Starrett is a rock star when it comes to solving these issues.

It doesn't matter how great you are at coaching, if your athlete cannot get into position they will get injured. I spend a lot of time learning solutions for these clients so that they CAN get into proper position, do have correct form, and avoid injury under load.

Very rare in boxes to have someone knowledgeable on mobility unless they are a Physical Therapist, and probably the main concern of people in the exercise physiology industry who hate on CrossFit. They think we are a bunch of meatheads screaming to go harder avoiding the real, deeper issues of our clients.

Bob nice set up and your doing a great job with those kids. Hey when are you going to bring them back up?

Comment #19 - Posted by: dan S. at February 12, 2010 10:20 PM

Dan, at the very latest we'll be back down in the summer during my summer camp. Bigger crowd this time!

But sooner if I can swing it!

Bob, since I read a previous post of you on your website, and now with the snapshot, I know that your box is one of the CF gyms I actually would like to train in.

Comment #21 - Posted by: Jaime (Hi-May) at February 17, 2010 12:33 AM

As someone has said previously, you have been quite an example. I am very proud of you little brother! It's good to see you profiled here and to read all the wonderful comments. You know I'm inching my way to fitness. Please be patient with me.
