CrossFit Slayer is a military affiliate who steps into our CrossFit Affiliate Snapshot:
- Affiliate Since: 6th of June 2009.
- Location: Camp Slayer, VBC, Baghdad, Iraq
- Sq Ft: Close to 1500 sq feet and a cul de sac we train in sometimes.
- Number of Members: Our numbers have fluctuated with incoming and outgoing units and personnel shifts.
- How many times have you moved your affiliate location? About 3. We started originally in the Fishbowl Gym which is the worst gym ever and quickly were asked to leave because we took over the yoga room and had a barbell sleeve break on us within the first week. By October, we moved to our present location behind Building 21-B on Camp Deutsch. We have since fixed up our flooring; built an awesome pull-up/ gymnastic ring set-up, and landscaped the entire back yard for our use.
- Greatest joy as a CrossFit affiliate: Nearly every one of our members who has been a part of this have had no prior CrossFit experience. It is a true pleasure to work with them, regardless of their athletic backgrounds and see them grown beyond anything they had thought possible prior. When we can actually help out service members' morale in ways they never thought possible from a gym it is an amazing feeling. Training under the coaches back home at CrossFit Old Town in Alexandria, VA taught me two main concepts that have formed what we stand for here. The community we have formed here is very much like back home. When our members return to the states and continue training and using CF to improve their lives even more professionally and personally, I know we have made a difference.
Wait, there's more . . .
- Biggest worry as a CrossFit affiliate: Not having a Cert for our guys out here before they leave and being kicked out of our spot.
- Do you Facebook? Yes I do. It is the most effective way for us to put up workout pictures from the night before for our families, past members, and other friends to see our WODs. The bandwidth here sucks, and FB is the most stable way of getting the pictures out.
- Do you Twitter? I do, but I don't really use it at all.
- If you had Coach Greg Glassman's ear, what would you ask him? Can we please get a certification out here to the guys on Victory Base Complex (VBC)? In terms of morale, CrossFit is providing more long term benefit than any second-rate country singer and it is something our guys can take back to the states and train more troops and spread support across the military. We have hundreds of people on VBC and surround FOBS who would love to attend a Cert -- any Cert, even specialty Certs.
- If you could give new CrossFit affiliates one piece of advice, what would it be? There is a terrible trend I have seen at many affiliates which I have worked out at as a guest and that is a lack of enforcement of standards. DO NOT EVER LET YOUR MEMBER'S RANGE OF MOTION STANDARDS SLIP. Even if their times are longer, the standards must be set. Don't be afraid to piss people off by not counting reps for crappy form. They will thank you for it later for the quicker adaptations and take pride in the fact that they are holding themselves to a higher standard. Reinforce that sense of pride and community amongst your guys and they will push harder to meet the standards and work to improve their times.
- What does your gym need more of? Rowers: haven't used one of those in months. I would love to set up two or three rowers in the back area near where we have our squat rack set up. Oh, and we need some help lobbying higher echelons for support to spread the Kool-Aid around more and get more assistance. And we need some athletic tape/pre-wrap. We had some sent to us, but we are burning through it.
- What does your gym need less of? Dust and a lack of command support. Dust can't be avoided, I guess it adds to the fun of it all (not so much), but we have had a considerable amount of hurdles to jump over because people at various levels of command here on Slayer just don't get it.
- Chalk? Or no chalk? Chalk! But we have had guys use the dust in lieu of chalk. Thankfully, we now have a few pounds which should last a good amount of time and we can make whatever mess we want.

CrossFit Slayer rocks. Keep up the great work!
Darn proud of the impact you've made Mike and CrossFit Slayer!!
Get yourself home SAFE and really freakin' STRONG!
Rock on, you guys. It's really inspirational to hear what you're doing over there, and I hope you're able to get all the support you deserve!
Thanks for the good words Freddy.
Just want to give a shout out to Mike and the guys at CF Slayer. The workouts break up the long hours we work here, and Mike is good at challening us and holding us to a higher standard. It has been a pleasure to train with Mike, I've come a long way in the month I've been here so far and I've no doubt it's due to Mike's leadership. Already I'm sure my tour would have been very different without the club.
CrossFit is a Godsend. I came over here fat and outta shape. I'm still fat and outta shape, but Mike and the folks over at CF Slayer are keeping me accountable. I've done "weight training" in the past, but that was child's play compared to CF! Mike has given me a lot of great instruction, especially to those of us new to CF. He is hard, but fair and overall patient with newcomers. I feel stronger and healthier after a couple of weeks with the club.
So Proud of you Mike (and everyone at CF Slayer)!!
Way to go Mike! Leave em better than you found em.
Thank you Mike. CF Slayer meant the world to me during my tour. Every WOD helped to keep me sane. I don't miss Iraq! but I do miss our team. Stay safe.
I've had to threaten peoples lives in order to keep my schedule so that I could keep going to CF Slayer. So to say it means a lot to me is an understatement. Thanks for everything Mike. It's gonna be real hard to see you go.
Amanda took the words right out of my mouth. I really miss training with you guys. Thanks for everything and the rest of my teammates at CF Slayer.
Mike, can we get an address for that tape? We do have the biggest AAFES here at Ramstein and I am sure we can get you guys some tape.
CrossFit Slayer brought me from Zero to Hero in less than 6 weeks! Now nobody kicks sand in my face! Thanks CrossFit Slayer!!!
Dude,
Shoot me am email. I'll be in IZ in about a day as part of incoming USF-I personnel. I am bringing some 3 GHDs, 5 bars and 3 squat / press racks. We have good command support at III Corps and I might be able to help you out some. We are also working on getting Coach (and possibly a cert over).
Don
Snyder,
A someone who had grown complacent and squishy prior to this deployment, I am incredibly grateful for all the work you put in to offering Crossfit to those of us mobilizing with you. It and was undoubtedly one of the more rewarding aspects of this tour!
Pullups prior to Snyder Crossfit- 0
Pullups post-Snyder Crossfit- 18
Thanks Snyder!
Don, that will be great to connect once you get here in country. Shoot me an email at crossfitslayer@gmail.com so we can coordinate some stuff. My unit is returning home in about 2/3 weeks. But we have plenty of guys looking to connect and they are going to keep the joy alive down on slayer. Catch you later. Thanks.
And thank you everyone for the support and good words. Check us out on Facebook too. the link is off of our page at www.crossfitslayer.com . Take care.
I go to Crossfit Slayer just to see SSG Snyder in shirts that don't fit him! *purr*
Watch it Justin - I happen to think he looks vrey nice in those shirts
Slayer, what's your mailing address and what other small things do you need? E.G. Athletic tape, chalk, things of that nature. Either post it up here or send me an email and I will do what I can to get it to you.
I don't want to post it up directly on here for security reasons. Could you send us a contact email via our webpage at www.crossfitslayer.com and I will send it back to you. Thanks.
Is there any thought of opening an affiliate location in the IZ? Currently there and wanting to get started.
Can anyone please tell me the timings/requirements for the CF meets at Slayer.....i have been searching for this place for 6 weeks.... im so close i can sniff the puke....ha ha.....any help will do
