Locked out of your gym? You can still box jump and figure out a WOD, like CrossFit Canberra (Australia) did recently. (That's Steve F., going for max height.)

Name your best, most insane, or most useful "I'll use what's in front of me" workout. Describe where, what, and why in Comments . . .

One week, two military newspapers: CrossFit Black Diamond (CA) makes it into the Navy Times, while CrossFit Ramstein (Germany) gets written up also.

loaded work van push sprints - they suck the life from your legs

Tabata what ever you have around you.

It was the Navy, Marine, Army and Air force Times that CrossFit Black Diamond was in. Those are all a part of the Military Times Newspaper. militarytimes.com is the website. There will be a new column monthly about CrossFit.

This past week I was in Italy, 2 tabata sets, pushups, situps, burpees, squats.
2 WODS with running, 1) 5 min run out, get back to the start in less then 5 minutes then 21-15-9 on a city bench, bench jumps, burpees, pushups, 5 minute run out and faster back.
2) Around a plaza, 7 rounds, 7 pushups, lap around plaza, 7 pushups

at the Coloseum, 4 rounds 30 seconds work each station:
jumping jacks, pushups, mountain climbers, burpees....this one was awesome to workout at.

When I first started training dudes from my parents home, the garage was so low one of my athletes couldn't even stand up straight.

I was limited on EVERYTHING except in the backyard, there musta been a row of 50 stones or so!

I had my 2 clients use them extensively as if they were barbells:

clean and press

carry

squat

lunge

row

push press

overhead walk

I will ALWAYS remember those times and yes, I even miss those days!

Sammy and I were vacationing at Snowbird in Utah. We had a blizzard, a heated outdoor pool, and 8000' of elevation. 10 minute AMRAP, swim a lap, 10 pushups, 10 squats on the deck.

The kiddie chairlift was going directly overhead throughout.

Take that, margins of experience!

Best,

Jon

Sam -- true, they are all part of the same paper system. Good point. (Although it's the Air Force Times, not the Air force Times. I'm old blue and we were always picky about getting that second capital letter.)

And that's great news about the monthly column on CrossFit -- thanks for letting us know.

Double Unders & Plyo push-ups using a paint can (for the push-ups... not the double-unders)

2 5 gallon buckets full of water. Slide pole under handles and deadlift while standing on landscape timber for elevation. Landscape timber for thrusters and swingset for pullups. Add in a run and it's all good.

Last summer, Phil and I were at his parent's NJ beach house. We had a 95# sandbag, and knew of a soccer field down the road, probably about 10 blocks away. For a warm-up, we carried the bag to the park, and the workout was:
6 sandbag power cleans (3 to each shoulder)
Drop the bag and sprint 120 yds
walk back
8 rounds (no time, just sprint as fast as humanly possible each round)

What we didn't really appreciate was the fact that we had to then CARRY the 95# beast back to the house. One of us shouldered it up, and we kept passing it back and forth about every half block or so until the deathmarch was over. It ended up being far more (mentally, at least) difficult than the workout.

I couldn't get out of the office on a hspu/squat/dip day. I shut the door, and used my L-desk for dips, a little rough on the wrists, but effective.

I was camping in Hinton Alberta and started with a run down an old dirt road for about 10 minutes. Once I found boulders and logs, I smashed a max rep in 20 min of 10 boulder dead lift, 10 clean, 10 press and 100m log toss then ran back to the tent site. There were plenty of people driving by me as I was tossing the rock and log around in the brush. The run back to the site was very slow! Good times.

At the beach for vacation, with no gym in sight. I ended up doing several "What's in front of me" workouts, including:

7 Rounds for time - Bear Crawl 7 yards, stand up and sprint back to start. I ended up looking like a sugar cookie.

Driftwood Log Lift and Carry-8 Rounds- Log weighed about 90#. Each round started with the log on the ground, so you have tp pick it up and run about 40' for the carry. Drop and do it again.

10x100yard beach sprints - just don't do this the day before you plan to drive/fly home. Sitting the next day will KILL your legs.

My favorite was a driftwood throw and sprint. I found a large-ish piece of driftwood (12-15#) and threw it, then sprinted to it, picked it up and threw it back the way I came with the opposite arm. 10 rounds (down and back equals 1 round).

This is just a few of the workouts I did during the 10 day vacation. BTW, sand makes everything harder.

HA! I like these comments. Our good buddy Zach, we call him the Mayor of CrossFit Fire, was supposed to teach a 5:30AM class, but left his keys at home. The workout ended up being a combination of Spartans, OHS's with different lengths of 4 x 4's, and burpees. I don't even know if our class was aware that it was a substitute WOD!

Long night at work, stuck sitting in the middle of nowhere, grabbed the loaded medical backpack and did weighted squats, lunges, pushups and used the spineboard for OHS. My partner thought I was nuts but after a few rounds he even jumped in to try it out because I looked like I was having fun
