It's the same everywhere -- and yet it's different. CrossFit Sport in Iceland.
Does the cheering really matter? In that moment of doubt and pain, do you even hear anyone? And what could they say to make you work harder and forge through the pain? Name the best thing you ever heard anyone yell in a CrossFit competition.
Well, you just have to see the "Chuck Norris Rope Climb" by

While training some fire fighters / friends I heard one encourage the other by screaming "Man Down" it seems to have the same affect on police officers and military personnel.
They dig deep and drive on, it's amazing. It's something that we all dread hearing and it spikes the adrenaline....
That is a sweet rope climb. The best thing someone can yell is, "Only 30 seconds left!" at the end of an AMRAP.
At the Socal Regionals recently, I was suffering on the OHS workout, with 5 reps to go...all my friends were yelling at me, "Pick up the bar!", "Go Mike go!", "C'mon Coach!"
I then heard my girlfriend's voice through the crowd say, "C'mon Mike, GET IT OVER WITH!"
That made so much sense to me, much more sense than anything else I was hearing at the time, haha. And so I did, I got it over with.

I sprained my ankkle during the last chance qualifier wod "jackie" coming down from pullups that I had yet to complete and my friend said, "you don't need it for pullups, get back up there". It made me laugh and it worked.:)

Impressive rope climb. I don't think I've seen any girls in any of the gyms I've been ( gymnastics ) climb 2 ropes at a time without feet. At my last gym, we had it set up like that but I don't think we had any who could ( or would besides the boys ). We may have 1 or 2 that could right now at my gym, but they rarely try.
The screaming and cheering defiantely help..you always work harder when someone or many people are encouraging you. think of what it must be like to play football on superbowl sunday or fighting in a boxing match at madison square garden. definately gets more out of the athlete
Depends on whats kind of cheering, I like ques when I get sloppy, correct my form. Yelling in my face 'you got this' over and over again dosen't really work for me. It just makes me want to yell back. Just tell me what to do, and I'll do my best.
In my beginning weeks of crossfit, I was doing a wod with running and bench press. When I came in from the first run to get under the bar, the trainer told me, "Alright, you've chased him down, now you have to fight him!" I took on a whole new mentallity after that.
Looking at starting a garage affiliate...was wondering what GHD is good? ProMaxima seems to be the cheapest but if i have to replace it in the long run I don't want to get it. Anybody have any personal recommendations?
Also, if anyone could offer me any general guidance (LLC vs Inc., how to write off start up costs, etc.) I would GREATLY appreciate it. You can leave comments or write me directly if you want to send me advice offline.
Thanks,
Nathan
we like: "Taliban on your 6"
translation: if you wouldn't slow down when Taliban are behind you, then don't do it now.
Great job on the rope climb - impressive to say the least.
Lis,
Is there anyway we could get HQ to change how a person finds an affiliate. Most people don't even know what an affiliate is. I asked some people I knew to try and find our place giving them the main site to navigate. All were disgruntled at how hard it was to find.
Can we maybe have a search option on the main page that says "Find a CrossFit Facility Near You" and have it navigate to the affiliate page or right to the person's state for all the gyms?
I know I'm not the only one who has concern for this. We want to make it as easy as possible for people to find our gym's so as to help spread the CrossFit word.
Nick -- great idea. But it's not that easy -- and I know because this is my ongoing personal project since joining CFHQ last year. Since then, I get this request at least 5x a week from affiliates and affiliate members in general.
Without getting into all the details of data and data management, let me just say that it's in our project list and that we're taking steps towards getting it done. It won't be as quick as you or I would hope for it to happen, but it will happen. Part of the problem of being a successful company is your own success. So many projects and only so much time. We'll get there; bear with us.
Thank you Lis! I appreciate the response and am looking forward to all of the new projects. Sounds like you need more people on staff to keep up..lol
The line that always gets me...
"Just put the bar down and go home"
That always gets me going again!
This one came from my trainer during the Mid Atlantic Qualifier. The WOD was 21,15,9 95lb snatch and chest to bar pullups. I was just about done with my round of 15 on the pullup bar and i came down and tore my hand open and it started to bleed. Playing college football the crowd was never a factor for me and I never heard what anyone said. The same was true for me during the qualifiers up until that point when I looked at my hand that was bleeding and I heard my trainer yell "It's only blood get back on the bar!!!" Sure enough I did and finished the WOD and had the time to beat for a couple heats!
I usually don't hear anything when I workout. I did the video qualifier workouts on Saturday and everyone was asking what music I wanted playing... my response was "I don't care because I usually don't hear it but nothing that will sound stupid on the video".
During our LatAm regional qualifier event, emerged two motivating phrases, the authors (Carlos Andrade and Jonathan Dowling) were competitors themselves, chearing another competitors:
Camina hacia la luz!! (Go to the light!)
Puedes o no puedes?!! (You can or you can not?!!)
Nobody answers "No". Everybody says "Puedo" (I can) and continue going on.
Does cheering matter? At least as much as home field advantage in sports matters - even the most unflappable multi-million dollar elite athletes perform better when they've got the home crowd cheering for them.
"Spawl"
At the Australasain Qualifiers, during the Pullups burpee row workout, was dead on the burpees and from the crowded I heard "spawl", I have a back ground in MMA so droped to the ground straight away, that little voice continued every burpee after that one. Turns out it was one of the guys i had been chatting to earlier in the day about the similarities between spawling dropping down for burpees, Yes it was a conditioned response for another sport, but it worked
Thanks Mich
I dunno, but I prefer to just block it all out and focus. Any blathering is just fodder noise unless I'm missing something technique wise.
However, I still cheer on when others do it...for some reason.
at the NW qualifiers one of our folks was laying on top of the wall ball trying to get his breath, and one of our others yelled out "stop humping the ball and throw it!", and he got up laughing just a little bit.
For me, it's very motivational to know how little work I have left. =D
Since I workout on my own alot, I typically repeat to myself, "5 more to go" or "You're halfway through the workout." For AMRAPs*, I don't even look at the clock, I just keep telling myself, "This will all be over soon."
*As Many Rounds As Possible in...
