Getting warmed up at CrossFit South Brooklyn.
Let's take all this CrossFit Risk Retention Group talk and break it down simply: The RRG is our shield and our sword against those who would want to harm CrossFit. Without it, we are all like the young lady in the photo above: A bit out of synch with her peers and about to draw some unwanted attention and correction. (And, no, your regular insurance is not likely to cover you the same way.)
Do you need to hear any more about the RRG? Have you seen the videos on the main page? Heard the CrossFit Radio shows? What's holding you back from joining? Why are we not at our $500,000 goal yet?
Young Emily and the (short but great!) story of her muscle-up, as told by CrossFit Ocean City and CrossFit Kids: [wmv] [mov]

Wow! Awesome muscle up Emily! Congratulations!
Way to cool!!
Way to be Emily and CrossFit Ocean City!!
Emily,
Great job! I was told the same thing in school about not doing the rings. Now at 39 the rings are my strongest skill as a Crossfitter! Keep it up and don't listen to the it's a boy's event crap!
Jen
Wow Emily- you have such a graceful muscle up and you make it look so easy! way to go!
J
Emily,
Attagirl! Wonderful! And on behalf of the gymnastic coaches of the world, to heck with those old school coaches who say no to kids!
Keep it up Emily.

Can Canadian Affiliates purchase into the RRG?
Congratulations Emily!! You rock girl!
Auty,
Unfortunately, affiliates outside of the US can't participate yet, but it's my understanding that it is in the works. But, we need to get this off the ground in the States first. This is so worthwhile we need to do this as a community to protect ourselves. Get to it people. I even put it on credit which is breaking one of my cardinal rules of fiscal responsibility. I really think it's that important.
When Steve sent me the video of Emily it brought tears to my eyes. This is what we want for our kids a world of opportunities. Emily took a "boys" event and made it simply an event. Cool. Good for you Ocean City crossfit kids and Congrats Emily.
Emily is a wonderful addition to our program. She's incredibly shy and quiet, yet she's determined to "do it right" no matter what. Whether it's overhead squats, pushups, pullups, running, she always gives 100%. She's so coachable and just a dream athlete in every way. She works hard on her competitive gymnastics program and has to leave early to get to CrossFit on time. Her gymnastics coaches were not happy at first, but now they're expressing interest in getting more of their kids involved in our program. We're lucky to have her!
Way to go Emily! What a huge accomplishment. You are an inspiration to some very excited kids here in Kansas.
Hi Lisbeth,
I'm definitely wishing I had more information about what the premiums will be. Perhaps that information is already out there and I just missed it? I haven't seen the video yet, but I'll watch it after my classes tonight. Thanks for all the info!
RRG - DO IT NOW! We personally had to wait until the first of the month to jump in due to bills, but once we paid out and had capital back in pocket, we were on it. Seriously, folks, just do it.
Many of us won't hesitate to drop coin on impulse purchases or things that are not a huge necessity right at the moment (want vs need), but then balk at $1000 to protect your livelihood and personal stakes. We need this to protect our brand of training and the gyms we own and work at. Pull out a card, and enter the info. The clock is ticking and if we don't get this up and running in the US, then the rest of the International Affiliates get a big nothing. It's for the good of all of us! The cost may seem like something to worry about, but come any future legal issues and even next tax season, it will all come out good.
In the scheme of "want vs need", think about where this may fall instead of something else that will have no worth if it's taken away due to a bad lawsuit.
OK, I'm off my soapbox!
Jennie -- the premiums are not set yet, but will vary according to the membership size of your affiliate and your gross revenue, as I understand it.
Here's my advice though -- don't worry about the potential premium cost, worry about having a CrossFit affiliate in 2 or 3 years. Because if we don't fund this RRG and get it up and running, it's only a matter of time before more insurers drops us all and the vultures/lawsuits set out to pick apart the bones of the affiliates that remain.
And I'm not joking.
Think about how Coach Glassman has steered us so far. Pretty good, huh? Now, more than ever, we need to pay attention to him and fund this RRG. We have absolutely nothing to lose in funding it (it's a $1,000 investment in the very survival of your business) and absolutely everything to lose if we do not fund it.
You're a good trainer, Jennie, and you bring a lot of enthusiasm to this community. Read the RRG articles, watch the video, and see what I'm talking about -- then bring that same enthusiasm to the RRG battle. We need you. We need everyone.
Well done Emily! You have set the bar high for girls your age and up - congrats!
Greg - who said CrossFit was "so safe"? You obviously haven't read anything Coach Glassman has said over the years on the subject.
It's safe if done properly with correct movement, scaled appropriately for the athlete, and the athlete is properly rested, hydrated, etc.
In other words, CF (done well) almost implies acts of responsibility on both the coach and athlete. As far as tort lawyers go, have you heard about the Mimms case and the $300K verdict against a former Affiliate (Ruthless Training) in VA?
They had waivers and all of that stuff and appear to have offered a reasonable Newb workout. And they still got sued and lost (and I'll say it again - their attorneys were not great. They did not contest the "dangerousness" of CF and instead focused solely on the duty to warn. Blech. And denied our offers of help.)
And what do you mean it sounds political? I don't care if the lawyers were democrats, republicans, or whigs! It's got nothing to do with politics (except to you). And I'm a lawyer, by trade.
And an RRG isn't some creature like the Loch Ness monster; other professions have been doing this for years, like doctors to control malpractice claims and premiums, and even police officers.
And if it turns out in 3 years there are no suits forthcoming, guess what? The Affiliate owners can decide to fold it up, get their capital plus dividends back, and go back to the old way of doing business.
