Do you use Google Reader (or something similar) to keep up with CrossFit blogs or the latest from the CrossFit Journal? Do you know what an RSS Feed is? Does your blog have one? Why should you care? Let's talk in Comments.

Now, let's try keeping up with Rudy from CrossFit Alexandria, as he gives us a very serious tour of their new digs: Video.

I have an entire igoogle page dedicated to crossfit blogs that I read regularly, and an additional one for other fitness sites.

i have no idea what the hell you're talking about :(

I do read a lot of blogs, sometimes on recommendations from this page.Found great blogging from the San Franciso bunch but the blog I find most enjoyable and informative is Jon Gilson's from Again Faster. He has inspired me to try to be a better writer both in use of the English language but also writing about things my athletes care about.
I don't know what an rss feed is. Explanation?

RSS rocks... although I come to the CF main site, a-blog, journal, and games sites each morning to get my fix, I do subscribe via RSS (using Google Reader) for sites like Jon Gilson's, Robb Wolf, etc.

If you don't know what RSS is, the best explanation I've ever seen is here: http://dmiracle.com/what-is-rss/ (WFS). Non-techy, non-jargony, his explanation makes it easy to understand and use, if you want. There's even a video there. Highly recommended.

I finally figured out what I'm missing - calf raises and wrist curls! Nice vid

Comment #6 - Posted by: Chris at January 8, 2009 5:51 AM

I live and die by Google Reader. I've got 30 Crossfit subscriptions and 15 Nutrition subscriptions that I try to dig through every day. High points are usually Robb Wolf and Jon's articles. Love Crossfit Balboa's Paleo info, CFSCC Eat This Blog, Modern Forager, Eat This!, Weight of the Evidence, Dr. Eades, My Paleo Kitchen. For programming: OPT and CFVB.

A nice feature too on Google Reader is to get your Google Alerts through there instead of e-mail. It's a good way to keep track of what's out there with your name on it (if you have a unique name) or that of your affiliate.

I'm curious as to whether anybody has an aggregator that they like better than GR. I'm always looking to check out some new stuff.

Oh -- and, on a related subject, I'm liking AllTop for an easy, eye-friendly way to surf blog topics quickly. (Thanks to Keith W. for pointing that one out!)

Comment #8 - Posted by: Lisbeth at January 8, 2009 7:08 AM

I use Bloglines - I have 10-15 blogs I keep up with - most of them are the affiliates in Oregon.

I love having something to keep track of the blogs I need to read, although I have a few complains with Bloglines. I'll have to try google reader.

RSS what? Not sure what it is or why I should. Enlighten me!

Comment #10 - Posted by: Neil of CrossFit of Naperville at January 8, 2009 8:06 AM

I use Google Reader, and subscribe to well over 100 different health + nutrition related blogs---even places like the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition have RSS feeds.

Funniest video ever! I love the girls doing the con. curls and tri. extensions--hilarious!

I exclusively use google reader to feed all kinds of crossfit RSS feeds, including the WOD, the CFE WOD, modern forager, virtuosity, beyers, etc, etc.

I also twit out WOD results and follow a number of "Cross-twitters" who post their WODs and also useful sites and twits throughout the day.

I would love to see Digg style up-downgrades for the daily comments, along with RSS for the daily comments. I would share-push out the good ones on other social media forms. I think this would cut to the chase on the "good comments" (Bingo's daily would rise to the top) and regular plain old result postings would drop to the bottom. It would be interesting

Neil -- if you go back and read the link that Adam so kindly provided, you'll learn what an RSS feed is. With that information, then you can figure out if you already have an RSS feed built into your site, or if you need (or want) to add one.

The upside of feeds and readers is that the user experience is enhanced in terms of speed and access -- your blog can be accessed easier and quicker with a reader. The downside is that the user may not poke around as much on your site if they only use the reader. (And that is why Jon called RSS feeds lame -- he wants the user to come directly to his site for content.)

But the answer to that issue? Have compelling content that makes the user of a reader want to go into your site to explore more. (Perhaps Jon should work on that! Ha! I'm just kidding, because Jon has great content and an RSS feed on his site.)

Think of all the blogs on the Internet as a huge pile of unorganized books just thrown all over the place. How do you find anything? RSS feeds and things like Google Reader are just tools by which you can stack up the pile of stuff you like and take a look at the cover, and then if you like what you see, open up the site and take a look around.

Hope this helps!

I'm a Google Reader dork. For CrossFit related, I'm subscribed to the Main page feed, Affiliate feed (even though I neither belong to one or own/run one), and the CrossFit Games feed.

Love Google Reader and I'll my subscriptions. Sometimes, too much.

I have a question for any affiliates that might currently be located in a globo gym. How do you manage this or what is your business plan with them? Please email me any suggestions or ideas, another trainer and myself are currently crossfitting all of our clients at a Gold's Gym, but right now we are strictly 1 on 1 sessions for the most part. My email is c_hobbs25@hotmail.com any ideas would be much appreciated thanx.

I use google reader a lot, but I hate it when only experts are put into the RSS feed. I believe that HQ works that way, you only get the first little bit of text and no images. I think if you're going to put out an RSS feed, put out the entire article. But that's my opinion.

Rudy,Casey,Christy love the new space. Behind the back wrist curls are a personal favorite of mine. A guy in Virginia Beach taught me. Love it!

My boss blocked all sites with the word "CrossFit" in it....Google Reader has been a life saver for me!

Comment #22 - Posted by: Nikki Hall at January 8, 2009 4:54 PM

Nikki - thats hilarious. The guys here laugh about being busted at work, huddled over the screen watching CF 'Porn.'

Google Reader looks awesome..not sure if its good or bad for time consumption though. Trying tomorrow!
