Just thinking of completing that has got me half way to Pukie-ville. :o)
Carrie - I was just thinking that same thing... "sheesh - that would take me a while."
Did this with a couple of subs - burpees for pullups and 500m rows for the runs. Did it in just over 40mins
Aiming to do it again in under 40
CF Marina is in. We didn't get to do the last one. Thanks in advance for another b---buster!
What is the point of doing this workout? I'm not trying to criticize it in anyway, but I question what is to be obtained, on a fitness level by performing this WOD. To me it almost appears that it follows along the lines of, "If you double your training volume, you get twice as fit." (neilfit 02/27/07). The whole WOD seems rather anti-Crossfit and a lot of what Crossfit preaches. Sure there are a couple grinders out there but they're few and far between.
OR is the main goal of this WOD simply pain (hence painstorm) and the sadistic pleasure obtained from 40 min of a hard as hell WOD?
Again, no criticism, just simple curiosity.
As you mentioned Troy, the fitness benefits of these things are questionable but the mental toughness you need to finish will carry over into shorter WODS - and life in general. Jeff Martin covered this more eloquently somewhere alse and I will try and dig his comments up for you.
Cheers, kempie
The History:
The first Painstorm was a gathering of some of the UK Crossfitters. Given that some of them traveled up 6 hours (by bus) for the meeting, no one felt like doing Fran and calling it a day. So the first Painstorm was something like warm up one round of Helen, followed by a typical CF WOD, followed by the Secret Service Snatch test, and of course partying afterwards.
The Painstorm soon evolved into a monthly competition between CrossFit London (represented by Kempie and Karl Steadman), CrossFit Central Scotland (represented by Davie and his crew) some displaced US military (Gordon Limb and some marine flyers in London, Brian White and his group called team Fallujah) and the group from Brand X. Dan Colson from CrossFit Rockford has "happily" joined in for the last three or four.
Karl, Davie and Jeff take turns creating the Painstorms. They tend to be long efforts, in keeping with the original tradition. Weights and reps are scaled of course, so everyone can join in.

Troy,
Believe it or not some of them have gotten out to an hour or longer in length. One very memorable month, no one complete the Painstorm. To speak to the training effect. We do the Painstorm once a month. Possibly during the month another long effort such as Murph shows up, but for the most part these long efforts are singular events. From the CrossFit point of view I believe that by completing these events we are pushing the edges of our experience and training at our extremems.
To speak to the training effect, when we first started these I would be sore and depleted for a week. Now I find I am rarely sore and able to turn around the next day and produce good efforts on the standard WOD's.
I also know I can produce when others won't and continue when other can't. That's worth knowing.
Just so I am clear on this RX, is that 21 15 9 of the 400 M Run? That is NUTTY! If that is the case we are talking about 11.25 miles of sprints...it would take me 4 or 5 hours to finish this painstorm...I guess, Saturday is going to be a long day for me.
Jeff,
Do not give Karl any openings to make this worse. My guess is its a single 400 between rounds.
Oh, that makes me feel a little better. I think Indy CrossFit is in on Saturday then. We should have 3-6 people who will jump on this.
Jeff,
What Jeff said...
Troy,
What Jeff said...

should be a kicker.
I did Painstorm XXI in January, and I now I see XXIII - somehow I missed XXII!! Can someone direct to where it is listed?
Thanks!
That is a great thread, Kempie. That one sucked. I kinda like the looks of this one. That means it will KILL me.
Thanks, Karl. grrrr! I'm going to kick ass on this one just to spite you. ;)

Though I was going to have to pull out due to injury earlier this week. Manged to get through but every rep of Cleans and Deadlift were singles with a reset to make sure nothing unexpected happened.

Some balance issues with first set of HSPU's made them take over 5 mins, all others were better. Think time would have been much better with some like-minded nutcases about - lots of time staring at bars and things. Still and all a cracking painstorm. Nice one Karl.
